January 2, 1958
Arizona (5-4) at Washington (4-5) We begin the league schedule on the road in a very unfriendly place for us, and drop this game, 62-57. Baptiste led us with 21 points while Alcantar had a dozen. Code:
January 4, 1958 Arizona (5-5) at Washington State (3-5) We steal a 1 point victory over Washington State in their house, 71-70. It is a miracle! Baptsite willed us to a win with a season high 29 points. Quach added 15 and Lindsey added 10 points off the bench. Code:
January 9, 1958 Oregon State (6-4) at Arizona (6-5) Our conference home opener is a disaster, and we lose 75-61. Baptiste scored 21 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Alcantar added 12 points. Code:
January 11, 1958 Oregon (6-6) at Arizona (6-6) We get back to 2-2 in league play with a 73-65 victory. We tried slowing down the pace of the game, but putting on more of a press to create turnovers. Our scoring defense has not been up to par, and this seemed to help a bit. Baptiste scored 18 points to lead all scorers. Quach and Alcantar each scored in double figures as well. Code:
January 16, 1958 Washington State (4-7) at Arizona (7-6) Just an ugly, depressing, unacceptable loss today. We get killed, 88-67 at home to a team we just beat on the road a couple weeks ago. Baptiste scored 20 points and Quach had a dozen. Code:

February 1, 1958
Arizona State (8-10) at Arizona (8-9) I call for a fast paced style of play, since our defense is not responding to anything else, and we win. But not as expected. We won a defensive battle, 61-60. Still, we will take any win we can get to get this team back on track. Quach led us with 14 points and Baptiste added 13. Code:
February 4, 1958 #18 Northern Arizona (14-5) at Arizona (9-9) We overscheduled just a bit here, but played a tough game before falling 70-60. Baptiste put up 13 points and 11 boards against a top 25 team. Quach added 11 points. Code:
February 8, 1958 Arizona (9-10) at Arizona State (8-11) We lose a shootout on the road today and end up splitting the season series with our northern friends. The final was 91-86. Baptiste had a massive game with 37 points and Quach set a career high with 26. Code:
February 13, 1958 Arizona (9-11) at Oregon (10-11) We get blown out today, 102-85. The season is slowly becoming unsalvageable. Baptiste had 21 points tonight. Alcantar, Quach and Andres all scored in double figures. Code:
February 15, 1958 Arizona (9-12) at Oregon State (13-8) Another blowout loss on the road as the final score ends up as 86-60. Quach led the way with 16 while Alcantar and Baptiste each had 14. Code:
February 20, 1958 Arizona (9-13) at UCLA (13-9) Another road game, another loss. We drop to 4-9 in league play, which ties us for last place. Also, it means we need to win out in order to just finish at 500. The final score here was 85-71. Code:
February 22, 1958 Arizona (9-14) at Southern California (13-10) We try to slow the game down to a crawling pace, and we succeed. Still, we lose. 56-49 was the final score. Code:
February 27, 1958 California (10-14) at Arizona (9-15) The good news is that the rest of our games are at home. The bad news is we lose the first of them, 57-56. Code:

March 8, 1958 Southern California (15-12) at Arizona (9-18) The season finally comes to an end, and at least we are able to win our 10th game of the season. Wet ake this one 84-73 and the season is officially over, as we did not qualify for the PAC 10 tournament. We finished dead last at 5-13. Code:

I am right back on the hot seat this year, and rightly so. We keep our coaching staff in tact this year. Scheduling. We have 10 games OOC, the 6 road games will be against bad teams. The 4 home games will be split up between bad teams and a couple decent teams. Code:
Recruiting. We have 3 scholarships to offer this year. The guard positions are the biggest need this year. We landed one recruit in the early signing period. PG Clinton McCrary is from Apache Junction, AZ. He is a 3 star recruit, but ranked #44 overall in the Nation! Easily the best recruit I even contacted since coming to Arizona. I just hope I am around to see him play for us. Code:
We are also after 2 shooting guards with nice talent.

Arizona Wildcats Roster
Centers 15 John Lindsey C Sr 6'10" 213 Lac St. Pierre, Canada John gets the start at Center this year. This is his first year as a starter. He is our best interior defender. He can get it done on the boards, but he might be a bit inconsistent there. His offense is poor. 34 Ali Fink C Fr 6'10" 225 Tucson, AZ Ali gets a red shirt this year. 50 Joel Davenport C Fr 6' 8" 224 Scottsdale, AZ As a true freshman, Joel will be our only backup for the two post positions. He plays decent defense and will help out on the boards as well. Power Forwards 53 Grant Weber PF So 6'10" 264 Eloy, AZ Grant is the starting PF this year. This is his first year as a starter. He will be providing all of the low post scoring for us. His defense is average, and his rebounding is not all that great. 2 Andrew Collier PF Fr 6'10" 261 Millbrae, CA Andrew gets a red shirt this year. Small Forwards 44 Eberhard Kreckel SF So 6' 7" 240 Weimar, Germany Kreckel will get the start at SF this year thanks to his superior defense. He doesn’t have much of an offensive game, so he will be rotating in and out with Millsaps. 30 James Millsaps SF Fr 6' 7" 234 San Diego, CA James has a pretty good inside outside offensive game, and will split time with Kreckel. Millsaps’ defense leaves a bit to be desired in the post, but his perimeter defense is OK. 52 Romeo Knight SF Fr 6' 7" 219 Ennis, MT Romeo gets a red shirt this year. Shooting Guards 45 Charles Shelly SG Jr 6' 4" 212 Canby, OR Shelly has a nice looking jumper and can also play some point guard, so he will back up both positions. His defense is not all that great though. 20 Alex Quach SG Jr 6' 3" 179 Eagar, AZ Alex becomes a 3 year starter this season. His career average is 10.4 points per game, but we are going to need him to do much better than that this year. His defense is very, very good as well. Point Guards 35 Paul Lin PG Sr 5' 7" 190 Las Vegas, NV Lin will see the bulk of the backup time at both guard spots. He is average everywhere, but probably an above average defender. 12 Tony Alcantar PG Sr 6' 1" 186 Cambria, CA Tony will now be a 4 year starter at the point. His defense is extremely strong. Possibly the best I have had at the point. He also has a nice enough shot and good passing skills. 5 John Bates PG So 6' 0" 173 Bayard, NM Bates has a deadly jumper but is buried in the depth chart. He will get his chance next year I think. I need him to work on the defense. We will do things pretty much the same as every other year to open the season. Medium paced flow to the game. Man to man defense. No doubling, no pressing, no trapping this year. Quach, Weber and Shelly will be our designated go to guys.

#23 Arizona (0-0) at Kansas State (0-0) Our opening game is not a good sign of things to come at all. We get chewed up and spit out to the tune of 70-52 against a very weak team. Weber played fine. He scored 14 and grabbed 11 boards. Lindsey and Quach each scored in double figures as well. Code:
November 20, 1958 Arizona (0-1) at Ball State (0-0) We rebound with a very nice 20 point road win today. The final was 71-51. Quach was 1 point from matching a career high. He had 25 points to lead all scorers. Alcantar added 14 and Lindsey added 10. Code:
November 25, 1958 Arizona (1-1) at Charlotte (1-1) Our offense played the worst game in my tenure with this team and we get hammered, 62-38. Weber scored 16 for us, but nobody else bothered to show up. Code:
November 29, 1958 Tennessee (0-1) at Arizona (1-2) Our first home game of the year is a major success and we get the easy 76-53 victory. Quach led the way with 22 points today. We need a consistant 15-20 from him every night. Weber added 19 points. Lin and Kreckel (off the bench) each chipped in with 10. But even when things go right, we get bad news. Alcantar, our starting PG will miss the next 6 weeks with an injury. Code:
November Recruiting. We did not sign anyone, but we are still in the hunt for both of the Shooting Guards I am after.

December 4, 1958
Arizona (2-2) at Florida (0-1) We get back on the road and give up way too many points in a 77-65 loss. Quach did score 21 points for us. Lin added 14 in his first start at the point, replacing the injured Tony Alcantar. Of course, we lose another player for 6 weeks. Our starting PF, Grant Weber is gone. We have no backups at the post positions now. Code:
December 9, 1958 Arizona (2-3) at Boston College (2-2) So we move Millsaps to the start SF spot. That means Kreckel goes to the bench and he will be backing up the low post positions, as well as SF. Joel Davenport takes over the starting PF spot. All that results in a 62-54 loss, but this team will need a few games to adjust to all the changes. Millsaps led the team in scoring in his new starting role with 17. Quach added 16. Code:
December 14, 1958 Arizona (2-4) at Bowling Green (2-3) We were competitive in this game, but a loss is a loss. The final score was 60-55. Quach led our team with 16 points. Lin scored 13 and Lindsey added 10. Davenport grabbed 11 boards in only his second start. Code:
December 19, 2958 Georgia Tech (4-3) at Arizona (2-5) We drop a home game against a decent team here, 61-54. At least our defense has been playing very good, even in the losses. That gives me a bit of hope for the PAC 10 schedule. Code:
December 24, 1958 Baylor (1-7) at Arizona (2-6) At least we will have a happy Christmas this year. We pick up a much needed win, 76-58. Lin scored a game high 20 points. Millsaps added 18 and Quach had 14. Code:
December 27, 1958 Prairie View (2-6) at Arizona (3-6) We pull off a 1 point upset of Prairie View today, 66-65. Despite Prairie View being down this year, this is the single biggest win in terms of knocking off a higher prestige team I think I have had yet. Lindsey had a great game in the blocks with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Lin, Quach and Millsaps all scored in double figures as well. Code:
December Recruiting. We picked up our second recruit of the year. SG David Kieffer is from Broadus, MT. He is ranked as the #44 SG in the Nation. Code:

January 1, 1959
Washington (2-6) at Arizona (4-6) We have a great start to the PAC 10 portion of our schedule, which is by far the most important thing. We win at home, 81-76 in Overtime. Quach set a new career high with 27 points today. Millsaps had a double double with 12 points and 10 boards. Shelly was forced to play at PF and Center in this game due to foul problems and came up with a miraculous effort: 10 points and 13 rebounds. Shelly is naturally a SG! Lin also chipped in with 10 points. Code:
January 3, 1959 Washington State (4-6) at Arizona (5-6) We lose what momentum we had after that exhilarating win, with a setback at home today, 71-68. This game also went to overtime, but we were not able to pull it out again. Quach was our leading scorer with 17 points. Millsaps and Davenpost both scored in double figures as well. Code:
January 8, 1959 Oregon State (4-6) at Arizona (5-7) With 3 home games to open our conference schedule, it is almost a must win here so we don’t start out 1-2. But of course, we have nothing at all in this game positive. We get blown out, 84-49. Lindsey had 16 points and 13 rebounds, but there was little else to talk about. Quach did score a dozen, which is still below his average. Code:
January 10, 1959 Oregon (5-8) at Arizona (5-8) We drop another home game with a 74-66 final. To open up the conferecne schedule 1-3, all at home means we are a very long shot to even come close to finishing at 500. That also means I am pretty much a lame duck coach this year. Code:
January 15, 1959 Arizona (5-9) at Oregon (6-8) The good news is that Alcantar is back from his injury and back in the starting lineup. Lin moves to the bench, but will see increased playing time. Weber is also getting better and will be active, but not starting yet. Still, that gives us some much needed depth. It does not, however, mean we are going to start winning games, as evidenced by a 72-65 defeat. Quach scored 26 points tonight and Alcantar put up a dozen in his return. I think this lineup has 1 more game to do something, and then we revamp it. Code:
January 17, 1959 Arizona (5-1) at Oregon State (7-6) Our defense played fine, but the offense was horrendous. We lose once again, 56-45. There will be some whole sale changes to the lineup for the next game. Code:
January 22, 1959 Arizona State (5-10) at Arizona (5-11) Our new starting lineup for this game looks like this: C Lindsey PF Weber SF Millsaps SG Quach PG Lin And what do you know? It worked! We pick up a 65-60 home win today and our league record is now 2-5. Weber is back in the lineup after his injury and comes back with a 21 point, 10 rebound game. Kreckel, now permanently on the bench, responded with 10 points. Code:
January 29, 1959 Arizona (6-11) at Stanford (6-11) We get back on the road, and the results should be familiar by now. We get smacked, 77-52. Weber scored 19, and the rest of the team is in hibernation. Code:
January 31, 1959 Arizona (6-12) at California (6-11) We close out the month exactly how we started it…by losing. 88-72 was the final score. Code:

Final Four
NIT Results: Arkansas Little Rock beats Brigham Young. The Match Ups #2 Wichita State vs. #1 Santa Clara #1 Oakland vs. #4 Portland In game 1, Santa Clara went to Senior Center James Arciniega for 20 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. James was the #5 overall recruit (5*) back in 1954. He was a 4 year starter as well. Wichita State had a very nicely balanced attack though and we able to outscore Santa Clara, 82-68. They were led by Junior PG (playing SG) Wilbert Riddell. Riddell was ranked 138 overall in 1954 and scored a team high 17 points. Riddell will be returning next year, no matter what the outcome of the finals is. In Game 2, Portland had a pair of 20 point games to lead them. Senior Center Arthur Voight, ranked #140 overall in 1953 and Senior SF Carl Cloyd, ranked #198 in 1953 both put up 20 points. It was not quite enough to get Portland over the top though. Oakland also had a 20 point game from Senior SF Clyde Hall, ranked #17 overall in 1953. Oakland also had more scoring depth and took this one 86-75. In the Finals, Oakland is going for their third title, Wichita for their first. The story of the game was the Wichita defense. They shut down all the big scorers for Oakland. They held them to just 52 points. Wichita’s offense was led by SG Tad Meraz, a senior ranked #106 overall in 1953. He scored 19 tonight. Senior PF James Shears added 17 and Wichita State wins the title, 67-52!

By the grace of my Athletic Director, I have kept my job for another season! I can hardly believe it, but I don’t even know if I have the kind of team that can get to 500 this season. I am on borrowed time. I need a miracle.
Here is the email from the AD: Code:
I keep my assistant coaching staff for another year. Scheduling. The motto this year is nobody who won ten games last year. Code:
Recruiting. We have 2 scholarships to offer up this year. A PF and a SG would be my preference this season. With some luck on our side this year, we sign the top two guys on our list in the early signing period. PG Alex Landis, from Ogden, UT has committed to Arizona. He is ranked #82 in the West Region. Code:
PF Eric McIntyre is from Plain City, UT. He is ranked as the #38 PF in the nation. Code:

Arizona Roster
Centers 50 Joel Davenport C So 6' 9" 229 Scottsdale, AZ Joel started 10 games last year at Center, but is our full time guy this year. He plays solid post defense and also can get after the rebounds. His offense is poor, and he will not give us much help there at all. 34 Ali Fink C Fr 6'10" 233 Tucson, AZ Ali will need another couple of years before he is ready to contribute on a regular basis. He is the second backup at the post positions this year. 55 Brian Shuster C Fr 6' 9" 234 Weaverville, CA Brian gets a red shirt this year. Power Forwards 53 Grant Weber PF Jr 6'10" 265 Eloy, AZ Grant will get the start at PF this year, and it will be his second year as the starter. He will be a great scoring threat down low. His defense is only average though. 2 Andrew Collier PF Fr 6'10" 265 Millbrae, CA Andrew is not great at anything, but he can do a little of everything. He will be our workhorse off the bench, backing up the C, PF and SF spots. Small Forwards 44 Eberhard Kreckel SF Jr 6' 7" 240 Weimar, Germany I decide to give Kreckel a red shirt this year. 30 James Millsaps SF So 6' 8" 237 San Diego, CA James gets the start at SF. He plays very good perimeter defense, but his interior defense needs some work. He is a duel scoring threat though, able to hit the jumper and bang down low. 52 Romeo Knight SF Fr 6' 7" 220 Ennis, MT Romeo looks like a SG to me, and a very good one at that. He will back up both the SF and SG spots this year. Shooting Guards 45 Charles Shelly SG Sr 6' 5" 212 Canby, OR Shelly has a fine jumper, but his defense is not there yet, so he will have to settle for a backup spot on the bench. 20 Alex Quach SG Sr 6' 3" 180 Eagar, AZ Alex gets the start at SG again this year. It will be his 4th year as a starter. He plays awesome defense, and can score as we already know. 51 David Kieffer SG Fr 6' 1" 176 Broadus, MT David gets a red shirt this year. Point Guards 5 John Bates PG Jr 6' 0" 174 Bayard, NM Bates will have to be lumped in with the other backup guards because of his weak defense. 24 Clinton McCrary PG Fr 6' 0" 195 Apache Junction, AZ Clint get the start at the point as a true freshman. He plays excellent defense, has a nice jumper that is still developing and is very, very quick.

There is no way I will survive this season, and if for some reason I don’t get fired, I will resign from Arizona after this season. It is just not working here and a change of scenary is much needed.

Final Four
NIT Finals: Duke beats Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Match Ups #7 Yale vs. #4 Clemson #1 Wichita State vs. #1 Duquesne Game 1 was considered the runner-up game, because the second game is getting all of the hype, and rightly so. Yale put on quite a show for the fans though and will prove tough to beat on Monday night. First, worth mentioning is the sensational performance by Clemson’s Senior Center John Nash. Nash was ranked #131 overall in 1955 and tonight he was the leading scorer with 29 points. But Yale just ran them up and down the court, taking a 102-88 victory. Junior SG Jose Litton, ranked #48 overall in 1956, led the Yale team with 20 points. Litton has declared for the draft already. Yale’s backup SG, Senior Raleigh Myers also had a fine game, scoring 18 points. Game 2 was everything we thought it would be. Defense was the name of the game, but we still saw a great offensive performance from Wichita State’s sophomore backup SF, Emory Fahey. Fahey scored a game high 17 points. Duquesne had a pair of double digit scorers in Stuart Fernandes and Chuck Enoch (a 5 star recruit). Duquesne takes this one, 67-65. They knock off the defending Champs and get to play for the title. In the Finals, the Yale offensive showcase had the brakes put on them. They had three players score 10 points and that was a team high. On the other hand, Duquesne had a 22 point performance from Junior SG Stuart Fernandes. Stu has already declared for the draft, and topped off his collegiate career with a 22 point night and a National Championship with a 77-65 victory! This is now Duquesne’s third title in 5 years and 5th title overall!
