Gene Wilder is one of those major DUH picks. Great pick, for some reason I never even thought about him, but he's done some great stuff.

Man...tough call on this one. But at the end of the day, I always find her performances to be pretty darned great.

I select, for Actress (Comedy), the three time Academy-Award nominated: Renee Zellweger.

I'll take two-time Academy Award winner...

Denzel Washington

...to fill my Dramatic Actor slot. I figured to hold off on this category until we got to the end-- figuring that it's the category with the most depth.

It seems that I planned correctly, since two of my three choices are still available.

The talented Mr. Washington has starred in such films as:

A Soldier's Story (for which he was jobbed of not only a BSA award, but even the nomination )
Glory (for which he won the BSA Oscar)
Training Day (for which he won the Best Actor Oscar)
Malcolm X (for which he was nominated for the Best Actor award)
Antione Fisher
John Q.
etc.

Well time to fill that action slot, and who better to do that with than Rambo himself?

Sylvester Stallone
Actor/Action

Doesn't quite fit in with the caliber of actors I've been picking, but he's frigging Rocky.

There were two guys in the action category I was really surprised are still here, and I had a tough time picking between the two. Be interesting to see when the other guy goes.

In the 9th round, the team is proud to select, from Pozzuoli, Italy:

Actress (Romance): Sophia Loren

~~~~
Sloan is up with 2 picks, followed by Shorty with 3 - if they're still interested...
Otherwise, Barkeep is up.
In the Actress (Comedy) category I will take the legendary Claudette Colbert best known for her work in "It Happened One Night" but with numerous other comedies to her credit.
I am still amazed that this man has not been taken. 9 times nominated for Best Actor. He won the award twice. In 1937 for his role in Captain Courageous, and again the following year for Boy's Town. he was also in such classics as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Adam's Rib, Judgement at Nuremberg, Inherit the Wind, Father of the Bride (1950), and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World among others. I present to you the FINAL member of team Deacon
Actor(drama):Spencer Tracy
Personally, I don't see the big deal about overall length of time. So it's been a month, so what? As long as things flowed along, no problem.
What is disappointing is when people join something (like a draft) that involves others and then fail to participate, thus leaving the rest of us in limbo. That I do not understand...
I'm glad to have this guy on my team. I waited to pick in this category last, because it is by far the deepest to choose from. His films are Road to Perdition, Cast Away, The Green Mile, You've Got Mail, Saving Private Ryan, Apollo 13, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Sleepless in Seattle and A League of Their Own. He has also produced the critically acclaimed TV series "From the Earth to the Moon" and "Band of Brothers". He has five Oscar nominations and two consecutive wins for Best Actor. My last pick, in the category Actor(drama) is
Tom Hanks
NoMyths is up.
3ric, we think alike. I felt the same way about he Actor/Drama category. That's why I waited all the way until last round to take Denzel. In hindsight, it looks like those of us who picked heavy-hitters in the other categories early came out ahead.
Incidentally, I felt that director was the Actress/Drama and director were the next deepest categories.
Given his run of films in the past decade+, I am amazed that Tom Hanks lasted as long as he did.
Just a matter of personal taste, oykib, but I would have kept Jane Fonda in the supporting actress slot.
Yeah, I thought of that. But she really doesn't have any outstanding Supporting Role Performances. Her seven Academy Nominations and all the movies I listed were all starring roles. Also, she has a lot more sex appeal than de Havilland. De Havilland also has Melanie Hamilton on her resume to show her versatility.
Actually, I believe that supporting actors need more range than starring charcters as they are called on to play a greater variety of roles. Starring roles tend to be archetypical. You're either the struggling hero or plucky heroine 60% of the time. The 'friend' character might be just about anything.
I think that de Havilland is the better actress and her resume includes a greater variety of roles-- although Fonda is no slouch. The truth is that I wasn't bowled over by the supporting actress choices left. There aren't that many good ones. There's one I considered. But the truth is that unless you're an amazing actress that is also amazingly unattractive, you're eventually going to either graduate to starring roles or fall out of the business altogether.
I'm wondering if anyone will take the amazing, amazingly unattractive great supporting actress that's still on the board.
Basically, I approached this as if I were bulding a studio that had to be able to make a movie for every audience since we're drafting all-time. I wanted to get the most versatile group that I could. If we're using the studio system, everytime I want to get one of your stars for my movie I've got to lend you one of mine for your competing film. I want to do as little of that as possible to maximize my profits and to increase the likelihood that the movies that I want to make get made.
So, that's why I tried to get an action star who can actually act, and is a good director as well.
My musical star can do comedy and drama. My comedian can do musicals, as can my Romantic and Comedic Actresses. My director has won awards for a variety of film genres. And both of my supporting actors are really lead actors without the glamour.
I'm sure most of us had our own reasoning (although, for the life of me I can't figure out what the hell Shorty was thinking). Actually, I'd like to hear from everyone what they thought about when drafting. After it's over, I'd really like to hear whom you passed up, and who you wanted that was taken ahead of where you thought they'd be. Also, who were the big suprises of the draft.
For Actress (Romance), I'm going far off the beaten path...to one of the most beaten paths of all. In a surprise selection...
...for Actress (Romance), I select: Asia Carrera
I considered Traci Lords, but the bulk of her, um, "romantic" work was done before she was street legal. I wanted to choose someone who could take on the most challenging romantic work, without worrying about their image being tarnished. Brilliant (a Mensa member), beautiful, and butt-kicking, Asia Carrera is not as scary (looking or personality-wise) as some of the other women in her field, and will do a fine job of rounding off Team NoMyths.
You forgot prolific. I bet she's made more movies than John Wayne and Spencer Tracy combined. I'd venture that she's made almost as many as Chaplin.
Yup.
As for the Ford pick, I kept sliding my selection of a Director because he was sitting there untouched, until finally I knew I had the final Director pick and could wait until the 10th round. Very happy to have him.
And the Miss Irrelevant Award goes to....
Caryn Elaine Johnson
Who is that? You might know her better as Whoopi Goldberg.
"Burglar" and "Jumping Jack Flash" are not great movies by any wild stretch of the imagination. BUT. Whoopi is quite funny in them and turns the mediocre films into something watchable.
Her comedic performance in the incredible sappy movie "Ghost" saved the film for me. Also, her role in Lion King as one of the hyenas was good as well.
Whoopi also does a bit of dramatic acting as well. She was very good in both “The Color Purple” and ”Clara’s Heart”
