Gable just got a short swing pass and made his defender look silly with a great spin move and then he ran through a few defenders for the TD. USC is up 14-0 and the O-Line looks very good. Also, Havili, our FB, is showing some athleticism and is going to add an element to the offense that we didn't have last year. On the downside, Cushing was illegally chop blocked and it wasn't called and he is hurt. Hopefully, it isn't serious.

Bah, the passer was called down negating the interception. It was a good call.

Oklahoma pasted UNT 79-10. Freshamn quarterback Sam Bradford went 21-23 for 363 yards (school record for a debuting quarterback) and three touchdowns. Plus, he broke the scholl record for consecutive completed passes with 19 straight completions. He threw for 350 yards in the first half which is also a school record. Another freshman, DeMarco Murray, scored a record five touchdowns.

Kansas State/Auburn has been very entertaining. Auburn goes up 16-13 with 2 minutes left. Both qbs are very beat up.

Florida may score 100 against this Tennessee 11 that plays when the offense isn't on the field. I really can't use the word "defense" to describe them.

I was at the game where Washington safety Curtis Williams was paralyzed...it's scary when a guy stops moving, even for a few seconds, much less minutes.

USC with a disapppointing 2nd quarter. Idaho's QB has made some impressive plays and he looks like he could have a good career. USC is up 21-3 at the half.

New Mexico-UTEP is tied 3-3 midway through the 3rd quarter. Not the wide open shootout I was expecting.

So, here's a question:
Assume that App. State wins out, and wins their tournament. Now assume that Michigan recovers from this loss, and wins the rest of their games. Now, pretend that there are no undefeated teams in 1A land, and Michigan gets matched up with, say, West Virginia in a national championship game. Let's say Michigan then WINS that game. So you would have the Michigan Wolverines, the National Champions, with a record of 12-1, the 1 loss being to the UNDEFEATED Appalachian State. How cool would that be? |

UTEP escapes with a 10-6 win. New Mexico had the ball on the 35 with 11 seconds left and no timeouts. The QB had a brain fart and scrambled up field with no one open instead of throwing the ball away, and the clock ran out.

Despite flat play after a very good 1st quarter, USC is up 38-3 going into the 4th and they have mostly backups in now. Nice to see them dominate despite the subpar play after the 1st quarter.

They also had no timeouts left, and 30 seconds on the clock. If they go for 7 on first down and have it picked off, they'd catch shit for not kicking the 3 and trying to keep Michigan from scoring for 30 seconds. If they try to run it and fumble it away, same thing. I am surprised they didn't try to run it to the right side to get a better angle on the kick. Like, just a run, a spike, and a kick, but that's the only fault I find with that call. |

Just got back from the game, damn nice way to open the season. the back ups played like crap tho, final was 63-6 and Brennan only played the first half.

Without timeouts left, I think the coach said he didn't want to have to rush the kicking unit on the field.

I like the unis that UTEP wore last night... Quote:
Tell me about it. We knew coming in that UNM wasn't going to be throwing the ball a ton, but UTEP's defense didn't show that they could stop anyone, especially Rodney Ferguson, against the run last year. And all we heard all camp long was how amazing our WRs were and how they were going to help out young QB Trevor Vittatoe. And none of what we "knew" turned out to be true. It's true that Ferguson got his yards, but the Miners played some good old bend but don't break defense. I don't think Ferguson had a rush for over ten yards, and giving up big runs was a big problem for us. And the defense really became stout in the red zone, keeping the Lobos from scoring any TDs and made they rely on their kicker, who missed a 32 and a 37 yarder. RS freshman QB Trevor Vittatoe looked pretty danged solid, but his numbers look pretty damn lousy because he had so many passes dropped on him. Seriously, the Miners must have dropped at least ten passes last night. I certainly give the Lobos some credit for that...they laid a couple nasty hits on receivers early in the game and our guys were probably hearing footsteps the rest of the night. But if we want to have a good season, we need to start catching the damn ball. Fred Rouse, by the way, needs to learn how to carry the damn ball. He had at least three fumbles on punt returns, and he scared the crap out of me every time he caught a pass. He reminded me of Deion Sanders returning a punt or INT...carrying it like a damn loaf of bread. A win is a win, though. However, I don't have a ton of hope for our trip to Lubbock next week to face Texas Blech. Still, I'll be in the stands cheering our boys in orange on...

Yeah, that's all they needed. QB keeper to the middle of the field. Michigan would burn their last timeout there. Now you can repeat the QB keeper, line up, run the clock down to maybe 10-15 seconds, spike it. Plenty of time to get the FG team out there without "rushing them." Or they could have just kicked the FG off the timeout...but at least in this scenario, if there's still 25 seconds left, Michigan is out of TOs. |

I they lost the game at that point, sure, they would have gotten crap for whatever decision they made, but- The odds of something horribly going wrong on a run then spike, or rushing the kicking team onto the field, or even throwing and going for 7 are FAR less than the odds of Michigan being able to get a FG in 30 seconds (which they almost did) |

I don't feel like searching through 9 pages for this- but does it agravate anyone else off when ESPN cuts away from football to show some pitcher throw a pitch every few minutes and get a something or another. If I wanted to watch that game, I would watch it- I want to watch football so leave it alone. They did this friday night, and saturday night. I wasn't even a big fan of the teams playing when this happened- but if I was I'd be pissed.
Now to football talk- I was somewhat impressed with my UL-Lafayette Cajuns. They kept it close against South Carolina, 28-14 was the final- but in the 4th quarter UL was able to drive inside the 5 yard line twice, but went for it on 4th down both times and missed. Our team can run the ball like crazy, but the kid at QB can't throw the ball to save his life. |

It depends on the what's going in both games, but on an all-sports network like ESPN, cutting away from the 3rd quarter in a Kansas State/Auburn game to go to the LAST OUT of a no-hitter is absolutely the right call (I think they could have pulled away for the entire last half-inning). Now if ESPN was carrying the Michigan game yesterday, then cutting away from the last few minutes of that to show a no-hitter would be a completely different story. I guess it is my complete ignorance in baseball and the fact that it pains me to watch it... Luckily last night I was able to just flip to another game for a few plays while that was going on. Friday night they cut away during the 8th inning, and again for the entire 9th. Now that was a perfect game, and I know enough to know that hardly ever happens so I guess it's alright, but maybe a split screen or something... Put the football game in the little screen baseball on the main one.

Cutting away to the no-hitter was the right thing to do. Football is not the only thing going on in sports, and "if I wanted to watch the game I would have it on" doesn't apply when it's not being carried by any other national broadcast.

Some quick thoughts on the games Thursday/Saturday:
Biggest Upset: Ummm. . . Most impressive team: Cal. Those WR have some scary moves. I was really impressed by that team. Not sure if they can beat USC, but they have some serious talent on that roster. Most dissapointing team (non Michigan category) - Texas and Notre Dame. OK, I knew ND would be bad this year, but 33-3 on your home field? And Teaxas usually pounds the teams they should pound. It's stunning for me to see that score. The Big 12 has some damned good young QB's - Cody Hawkins and the kid from OU have some talent. Cody kind of reminds me of Applewhite. He's not winning a national title and I don't think he's big enough to be a great pro, but he knows how to play the game and has some major guts. CU will be a better team with him at the helm for four years. Auburn looks horrible on offense. I mean, really, really bad. I can't believe they won that game. Impressed with Georgia. Good game guys. |
