I decide to go with a favorite here, but I have objective reasons for it, so let me explain:

10.4 Show, Drama - Babylon 5

Besides "I really, really love it,"here are some reasons why I think it belongs:

1). Several major authorities in the field of science fiction have siad that there are three seminal scifi shows - The Twilight Zone, Star Trek (The original), and Bab 5.

2). Bab 5 was concieved as a five year show with a beginning, middle and end. The entire plot was written before the first scene was shot. Not only was this ver yunusual, but nobody thought it could be done.

3). Season 3 was the first, and so far only time, that one writer has wrriten every episode in an entire, full-length series in America television. Not only was this an amazing feat in and of itself, but it also gave a highly complex show a unity of vision.

4). Babylon 5 was the first TV show not named Star Trek to receive a Hugo award for best visual scifi (An award which includes TV and movie).

5). The serial nature of the plot in Bab 5 was the first time it had been done in American television outside of the soap opera genre. Babylon 5's success, despite being a cable and alternate network fixture, has led to other concept shows.

6). In fact, both 24 and Lost (taken earlier), both have creative input that says that they derived a great deal of inspiration from Bab 5 for their show. (Lost would take it a step farther and cast two ex Bab 5 actors in roles for the show).

I figure that's good enough to warrant a 10th round pick, despite that fact that its damn good television.

you know, I've never seen Babylon 5 - always skipped over it on TV, assuming it was a cheesy Star Trek rip off. I'll give it a shot.

There are two shows in my DVD collection that are on virtually constant loan to people, and they always love them. Bab 5, and another show which is brillant but I won't mention it because it hasn't been chosen. I don't think it will be, because it hasn't gotten enough exposure here in the states, but you never know...

I've never seen it either, since I assumed the same things about it as Crapshoot did. Is it still on TV in re-runs? If so, I'll have to Tivo it.

If it is, then it's on scifi.

My final eclectic pick:

Show-Performer: John C. McGinley (Scrubs)

Zach Braff's the heart, but McGinley is the fire-breathing scene stealer. The man is just a comic genius. The best supporting actor on television right now in my book.

It's kind of funny. The truth is more likely that DS9 was a rip-off of B5. The Apocryphal story is that Straczynski went to Paramount with his B5 idea first. But they never got back to him. And then DS9 was announced. There was a strong implication that htey took some off his concepts and "Star Trekked" them up enough that they could get away with stealing them.

Most of the B% fan sites have the story in more detail.

I considered this *very strongly*. I ultimately decided to pass because I was afraid it might be considered a grey area since The Simpsons were selected as a show. I think it's a great pick and should stand, I just didn't want to go through the hassle and paperwork if anybody objected.

I believe Herd's pick brings it around to me, so in order to keep things moving ...
Show, Other -- Wild Kingdom

It made Mutual of Omaha a household name and really established a whole genre that continues today.

10.9 - Drama - Performer - Hugh Laurie in House

Its a newer show, but the title character is probably my favorite character from a TV show in the last 10 years. I think the show itself is extremely entertaining(though with anything relatively new I know there will be a ton of varying opinions on this), and I think its a very good hospital drama, but has enough of a unique feel that its not just another in the long line of ER clones.

Agreed. He makes a marvelous bastard, doesn't he? Although my son is heavily into Stuart Little 2 right now, and Hugh Laurie is the geeky dad in it, which is a tough contrast for me.

Seriously, a good sleeper pick - hopefully the voters will pick up on it.

There were several shows that I was a bit suprised didn't go:

Doctor Who
Cold Feet
Coupling
Brady Bunch
Guiding Light
Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which revived the game show genre
Night Court
Twin Peaks (which I almost took in the tenth round)
Northern Exposure
Thirtysomething
The West Wing (which I considered taking since it started the political drama)

The West Wing was on my short list, but I skipped past it to avoid unalienating half the voters. Tony Shaloub and/or Monk would have been a great pick.

Brady Bunch ... Anxiety, you're killing me!

Brady Bunch is a show that had a lot of impact on family sitcoms, is ubiquitous, and honest. It may have been smarmy, and it's not my cup of tea, but is was a well designed show.

I looked in teh list of shows that had been taken, because it took too long to search the lists, and I didn't see it there.
