Crazy Heart - 7.5/10
I felt the last half, maybe third, of this movie was really strong. It took me a while to really get into it, and one roadblock I kept running into was believing the romance on screen. There was something about that just didn't feel.. true? Real? Maybe if it wasn't Maggie Gyllenhaal playing the role it would have worked better. I may be slightly biased as I am not a fan of hers, at all. I just kept asking myself why somebody in her position would chase this man. I did find that as the movie progressed it got much better, and by the end I would say I enjoyed the movie. EDIT: Just wanted to add, Jeff Bridges was fucking great. That is all. Yup, I felt the same way. Fun movie for sure. It was funny sitting next to a guy that was thoroughly enjoying it while his date/wife just sat there with a wtf look on her face. Nicholas Cage was great, the girl was fantastic.

Agreed. Just saw QoS and give it a 6/10. Also agree with scoobz on Maggie Gyllenhaal. Right after the Joker said "and you are beautiful" in Dark Knight, that fully confirmed he was batshit crazy.

Kick-Ass - 8/10: Funny flick about the non-superpowered superhero. I agree with others that it turns into a regular superhero type flick at the end (though they still don't have superpowers), but it is incredibly, incredibly fun and awesome in the final few action sequences. Before that, the life of Dave had many amusing bits, as well as Nick Cage's Big Daddy story arc. And Chloe Moretz absolutely stole the movie as "Hit Girl".
Oh, if you really want a WTF moment, look at how the original comic ends on wikipedia. Let's just say it's... different.

Battle for Terra 8/10: I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would.
This animated movie is about humans who are drifting through space looking for a planet to terraform and begin anew. However the planet they find is inhabited by aliens who can't breathe oxygen. The CG is beautiful at times but looks dated at other times. I found the story to be emotionally engrossing though it uses some tired cliches. I also wish the movie was longer. The runtime is only 85 minutes and the plot could've used some fleshing out. Last edited by Greyroofoo : 04-25-2010 at 11:29 PM. |

Lets see-
W(7/10). Brolin owned this one. I thought that Condelezza was a bit weak, but Cheney v. Powell really made the movie. I'd have figured that the election theft and 9/11 would have made a better movie. But the scope of the story seemed to be more about the war. Zombieland(8/10)-Thought it was very funny. I don't normally do zombie stuff because of the gore, etc. Bill Murray was awesome in his cameo. Up in the Air(8.5/10). I was familiar with the major twist. However it was even better than I expected. Clooney was excellent. The World is not Enough(2/10)-After Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace, I forgot how Bond movies usually suck. This was pretty awful even by Bond standards. Twilight:New Moon(5/10). Not as awful as I figured. But my daughter wanted to watch it, and I screened it first. The whole middle part where Edward appears in visions was absolutely horrific. Like bad SNL type comedy. I'll admit to being somewhat obsessed with the chick who plays Alice though. Enemy at the Gates(6.5/10) Somewhat banal sniper battle set in one of the most interesting battles in WW2. Anyways, I got more out of reading about the actual battle of Stalingrad than the movie. But I wouldn't have done that if not for the movie. In a side note, someone really needs to make a movie based on this Last edited by stevew : 04-27-2010 at 01:48 AM. |

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (8.5/10) It was just great. Jim Carrey was fine, not amazing, but fine and good. Kate Winslet was astounding from the first frame to the end. Mostly because she WAS that character. I never saw it the first time around, so it was all new to me. The more I got into it, the more I enjoyed the somewhat bizarre subplots.
Man on Wire (9.5/10): A documentary about the only person to tight rope walk across the World Trade Center buildings. It was produced like a caper film, which makes it even more suspensful even though you know the eventual outcome. It was just a fun flick, well done and far deeper than I would've anticipated. Paul Blart: Mall Cop (5/10) I was bored on a rainy day and wanted to life. It was a lot better than I expected. Fluff and dorky, but totally fun and worth watching at home. I can't imagine having paid to see it in a movie theatre, though. Beeswax: (3/10) A mumblecore flick that I just couldn't get into. Just too much stuff happening on the periphery, it moved too slowly and just didn't work for me. |

Cocaine Cowboys - 10/10
This was a great documentary about the injection of cocaine into the U.S. via the Cubans and Columbians. The movie focuses on a few of the primary players, two of which are Americans that coordinated the transport from Columbia to Miami. The other big contributor to the documentary info is the main hitman for the Columbian female accredited with driving the violence in Miami during the early 80's. You can stream it on Netflix. Kick-Ass - 8.5/10. Just so many things I liked about it. Hit-Girl was great. Nic Cage was actually enjoyable. The fight scenes were excellently grotesque and not too over the top- I was enjoying myself without having to simultaneously roll my eyes. Everyone already knows the good things people have had to say about it. My two critiques- I might have enjoyed the movie more if it was called "Hit-Girl" and her story arc was the base of the movie. Secondly, I hated that it went from

Easier With Practice 6.9/10: It was a strange movie about a dude who gets a random call from a woman at his hotel and begins a phone sex relationship with her. Absolutely odd and the ending is wacky. Based off a real-life GQ article. It was filmed well though, the music is very good and the actors did their work pretty well, too.
A bit rough around the edges and a few decisions I wouldn't have made with the screenplay, but all in all, well done I thought. |

I also noticed the nitpick others pointed out, but I didn't really care and nor did I care about the shift. I loved this movie. Chloe Grace Moretz stole (500) Days of Summer and she does the same thing in this movie. Hilarious, gory, and just all-around fun. 9.5

Just finished this. Agreed 100% on Miss Mulligan. What a performance. In one movie she shot up the charts of my "favorite actress" list. I can't wait to see what she releases in the years to come. I felt the ending felt rushed though, and I felt kind of robbed. The whole movie was very well done and the ending just felt amateurish. I would still give it an 8/10 though. |

Story of a Three-day Pass (1968)
It's actually a French film by Melvin Van Peebles, it was his first movie and what put him on Hollywood's radar at a time there were no black directors in Hollywood. It's based on the French novel he wrote La permission, which qualified him for a filmmakers grant in France, which is how he made it. They alternate between English and French without subtitles. It's clearly his first film, quaint and hokey and obviously made in the sixties. But cute for it's time and groundbreaking given what it did for him after that. The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans - 7.5/10
Directed by Werner Herzog, this is a movie I had heard nothing about. I saw it while cruising netflix and thought, what the hell. Nicholas Cage seems like he's jumped the shark but maybe this will surprise me. It did. Maybe because I had no preconceptions but I really think this is the best Nicholas Cage I have seen in years. This is the role that he is made for. |

Good movie. I don't know if it's just me or if it didn't really surpass the first... but it was a fun, fun movie. Good blend of action with nice comedic moments and one-liners.

Party Down (8/10) -- Not a movie but a Starz series. Directed by Fred Savage, you'll see some faces you might recognize from other stuff and my wife and I are finding it quite funny. About a party company and each episode they are doing a party at a different location for a different group.

The Hurt Locker - 8/10: Very good movie on what bomb squads during wars have to go through and the stress it can put on people (and how some thrive on that stress). The acting was very well done and the cinematography was wonderful. I still think Inglourious Basterds deserved the Best Picture Oscar, though.

Please Vote For Me: I watched this via Netflix today. It's the story of a 3rd grade election for class monitor in China. Such an election had never been done before. It's hilarious and quite a look at childhood politics, as well as insight into daily life in China. It's a must watch.

A Horror Comedy flick. It gets four stars based on the eye candy, halfway decent storyline and some funny if cheesy one liners. Otherwise it is pretty lame. I was able to sit through the whole thing without turning it off. |

It's a movie about two teachers in New York. Orthodox Jewish girl and a Muslim girl, daughter of an Imam. They find common ground in the fact that both are going to get arranged marriages. It's a good story, well acted and pretty realistic on the whole. |

Ira & Abby
A pair meet at a gym, it's instant love and they decide to get married on the spot. Then the story starts. It's a bit ridiculous, but cute and as many of the reviewers said about it when it was in the movies for a few minutes that it's the sort of movie Woody Allen used to make. Breezy and sort of almost feels more like a series of sitcom episodes rather than a long movie (run time is 1 hr 45 min..ish), but it's well acted and has a supporting case that includes Jason Alexander, Judith Light and a bunch of other people who I recognize but can't name off the top of my head. Good date movie, if you want one of those for video and it's on demand via Netflix.

Date Night - Saw it with my best friend (a dude) on Cinco de Mayo. We go up to the line and he asks for two tix for Date Night (he got free tickets from work), and I nudge him and say "you shoulda said two tix for the new Steve Carrell comedy". It just looked overwhelmingly gay due to the fact it's called date night.
ANYWAY, back to the movie. It was just what I expected, Carrell was funny in his Carrell sort of way, Tina Fey looked cougarishly sexy and there were some good laughs all around. Worth the time, don't know if I would have dropped the $10 on it to see it though. 6/10 |

The Butterfly Effect - 9/10 or 7/10
Watched it this afternoon. I can't say much without spoilers, but this movie really grabbed me and the twists kept it interesting. Right after watching I rated it a 9, but over time I might tone down. Reading about the alternate ending, it seems like the theatre cut wouldn't be as special and I'd probably rated it lower.

Lots of funny one-liners. The story didn't go like I thought, but it was still fun. Scarlett Johansson kicking ass was super hot... she's got some really nice curves. Her hair looked pretty too.

Could've done without the expected "breakdown" in the movie, but I always like movies about tomboys getting to be tomboys. The music was pretty good throughout the movie, too, which always is a bonus. /tk

The Hangover (8/10) -- Watched this for the 2nd time as we saw it in the theater originally. I was curious if I would enjoy it as much and I did. I might have even enjoyed it a bit more for some reason. Caught some stuff I definitely missed the first go around. I have to try and find my original rating and see what it was.
