*Disclaimer: I was listening on the radio at the time, so I didn't see it. The 49ers radio play-by-play guys were exclaiming about how the refs let Rodgers get away with one loudly...then the 49ers got the ball. In fairness, they then proceeded to repeat (a lot) that the 49ers got really lucky that the refs let the play go off.

My wife decided she wants a Victor Cruz jersey this year. I told her a stipulation is every TD Cruz scores she has to do a salsa dance, so I am enjoying that at least.

3) Even when he is chasing after him, it is clear that Smith is going out of bounds before he even picks up his left leg. He's on his way out, there is nowhere else for him to go. He's not cutting back in, it's filled with Bucs.

4) Again, this is a late hit if it's a RB, WR or QB. This same play happens about 5 or 6 times a game and about once in every 4 or 5 games some moron decides to take the shot and gets called for it 90% of the time.

5) I'll ask again, what does he have to gain here by putting his hands on the QB and shoving him? He had nothing to gain there and everything to lose. . . he lost. Hopefully he learns from it and becomes a better player. If he doesn't, that's on him.

It's one of those plays that 20 years ago would not be called because he was not yet out of bounds (foot not down) but everyone knows that is called now. There is nothing to gain by that shove, just trying to get a shot on QB. It's a boneheaded play and it cost his team the game.

It's not quite the punk move like Matthews though.

Not liking the new direction of the league.

Every player from the Buddy-ball years would have been kicked out of the league today (Bears defense and then Eagles defense).

It has, but the Giants defense is so gassed I think the only way they get a stop is if we get a Romo screw up.

Giants have no one to blame but themselves

Let's see if this works the other way ...

Cowboys defense is so gassed I think the only way they keep G-Men out of end zone is if Eli falls down and hurts himself.

Wasn't really asking for injury - more like taking a "Favre-into-Strahan" soft sack or three.

Nice dive, Giants punter. So weak.

Is it just me or are the Giants not exactly moving quickly to the line in this drive, kind of like they already have assumed loss. They could have saved about 25 seconds more if they played that right.

I was very impressed by Eric Reid in that Niners-Packers game. He looked like a bullet coming out of the secondary on run support/short routes.

A lot of LSU fans were down on Eric Reid because he didn't have as good a Jr year as Soph yr. Of course he also didn't Mo Claiborne, Honey Badger or his other safety returning. He's an incredibly smart player to go with his physical talent and I think he'll be a stud in the NFL.

FWIW...this is what most 49ers fans have been saying since the league initially responded with "oh, sorry, you got an extra down!" It's nice to get some actual validation from the league. Completely bogus penalty on Staley, and Mathews should be suspended for 1 game for throwing punches.

NFL now says Packers, not 49ers, benefitted from officials’ mistake | ProFootballTalk

It would have been 4th and 2 - not 4th and 1 so I doubt they go for it there.

I'm surprised this didn't come up - the play clock was clearly at 0 for a full second before Rodgers snapped it. Just like the above play, though, the accountability ultimately rests on McCarthy. He should have challenged or contested both plays and didn't.

That's kind of BS. You can't go back and say "well, I guuesss that wasn't REEALLY a personal foul against Staley - so the fact that we didn't know the rule on post-play offsetting penalties shouldn't matter."

There were a ton of plays where if you could go back, look at the tape and re-call the play it would benefit the Packers - from the letting the playclock expire before the Lacy fumble to the pushoff by Boldin. The play was called at the time two post-play personal fouls. They offset and it should have been 4th and 2 for SF (and a probable field goal). If the league's defense is "well, after reviewing the tape it looks like one personal foul wasn't quite as big of a foul - so just forget we didn't know the rules" - I'd say that's pretty weak.

In the end, though, McCarthy and his stuff deserve the blame for this game. They let two incorrect missed rule calls go (not challenging the play clock expiring and this personal foul botch) and ran a terrible zone defense all day against a QB who only threw to two players (Boldin and Davis).

I watched the play and the aftermath 5 or 6 times this morning. I think it should have been:

1) Personal foul on Mathews
2) Personal foul on Packer DB who shoved a 49er
3) Personal foul and ejection on Mathews for throwing a punch
4) Nothing on the Niners.

I didn't see anything more than a slight shove from any 49er that ran into the scrum, including Staley.

That said, Arles is right, the play may have been called incorrectly, but the rules interpretation was off and that benefited the 49ers.

From a "karma" perspective, I think the 49ers deserved it and won it all the way around. But the rules were not interpreted correctly on the field.

Yup, I doubt that extra yard would have changed the philosophy at all. If anything, the 49ers would have been more motivated to go for it, under the theory that they were "fired up" by the late hit and would have no issue getting the yard or two needed for the first.

Yeah Sun isn't speaking for me personally as a Niner fan with that comment. The one thing that the refs should always be able to get right is the application of the rules.

The NFL also gave an interpretation of the Bucs late hit play that showed the refs got it right.

It will be an interesting week on the NFL discipline front.

Mathews should get a MASSIVE fine and be put on probation.
Suh should get a full blown suspension.

Then if they don't get it - you have a 7 point swing instead of just the 4 pointer for hitting the FG. It was a key decision that should not have been made incorrectly.

All that said, it happened in the second quarter and the Packers had plenty of chances to win that game even with that call going against them. McCarthy, Capers and the entire GB coaching staff did not come off well in this game. Still, GB was still winning on the road in the 4th quarter when Cobb, Nelson and Rodgers hadn't played one snap together in the preseason and 2 defensive back starters were out with injuries. The team will get better and there's no shame in losing a close one in SF.
