I've gotta say that I wish I hadn't picked MacInnis when I did. It's not because he wasn't great on offense. It's because he played for St. Louis, and as I was trying to pick later on, it seemed like everyone I really wanted played for the Blues at some point. That just drove me up a wall. I can think of a couple of former Blues I'd rather have had than MacInnis (especially with Rob Blake still on the board at the time). Oh well.

I've gotta say that this draft is getting more fun and strategic for me now. It's at the point where you can look at somebody's board and decide that a guy can wait because nobody else can pick him. I'm pretty sure that Lathum and I are thinking of the same guy, and Lathum knows that he's gotta pick him next. This is great.

Frankly, I was shocked that LaFleur stayed on the board for so long. I had a hard time picking between him and Sundin when I was burning Quebec. LaFleur is good value for the 5th round.

It's so frustrating when you have a guy in mind, then look up his stats and realise he played like 25 games at the end of his career with some other team like Detroit or St. Louis.

Chief's pick officially eliminates arguably the second best defenceman in NHL history, and The Hockey News' #6 best player of all time: Doug Harvey.

What I'm learning from this draft: every NHL player in history played one season for the Red Wings.

In a way, yes. I'm mostly surprised that one particular person in this draft didn't take him, but I do understand his pick that eliminated the guy. It is hard to believe that so many people apparently overlooked this player. As I said before, I just didn't want him earlier on, but I do think that some people just forgot about him until it was too late.

I am still in awe that no one picked him. Ya, he played for a lot of teams, but he's Doug Freakin' Harvey!!

It's interesting to look at the rest of the teams. A few wound up eliminating your pick by taking a guy that was clearly better. A few others took a better player in this guy's best category, but could have squeezed him in somewhere else. And a few just screwed up royally by passing him over in favor of lesser players.

The two game stint with the Red Wings just killed him.

I was going to take Harvey really early on but my Gordie Howe pick killed that off.

I would be in this category, particularly with the Rob Ray pick.

As for Doug Harvey, I've got to admit that I'd never heard of him.

The Patrick Roy pick for me eliminated Montreal, which eliminates many of the great players in the 60's and 70's.

I still can't believe I drafted Roy. I haven't felt "right" since.

I know you had Lidstrom, but seeing Rob Ray picked ahead of Bob Probert was the "head asplode" moment of the draft for me so far.

Steve Yzerman ahead of Mario Lemieux was the "head asplode" moment for me. And then I inherited it

Yeah, Ray really could've waited a round or twelve, but uh... I'm from Louisiana? Yeeeeah, that's it.

Oh and Modano going in the second round hurts my head too, but I have a hunch that Modano is regarded more highly by our American friends than he is up here, so that might explain it.

I don't think you can underestimat the one team for his career aspect. It makes a player like Modano more valuable then a Brett Hull, who was much better.

The thing is I'm not sure whoever votes can have an appreciation for how big a hurdle that is.

Yeah, especially since EVERYBODY PLAYED FOR DETROIT AND ST. LOUIS (and I burned both teams with my first two picks).

But in the second round? And high up too, like 3rd pick of the round (EDIT: Actually it was low down in the round, I'm an idiot)... I don't know, maybe I just don't appreciate Modano as much as I should, but he strikes me as being a 2nd-tier kind of guy in his own generation, and that just seemed too soon to be digging into the second tier...

He was a big part of the Olympics in Nagano where the US team got the shit kicked out of them...then took it out on their rooms.

Hold on Lathum.

You have Scott Stevens listed as playing for the Devils, but he also played for the Blues and Capitals.

That may... um... alter your strategy.

What I ought to do is hold this pick for the final round. That way, the voters might look at it and say "Huh? Why did that guy go so late? Are these people stupid?!"

That's what I'm afraid of. Logically, there's no reason for me to pick him before that, but I would need to be extra careful with all of my picks for exactly the reason you stated. Ugh. How much do I trust my memory?
