Oh my...

Brian Rafalski is a Wing.

(Maybe).

No. He is. 5 years, $30 million.

I need to think about this.

I'm not the biggest Rafalski fan in the world, but, from Detroit's standpoint, it sure looks good to upgrade from Schneider to Rafalski.

No problem at all. I didn't have time to post all the info, wife just go back from a trip while I was posting it.

That is a lot for Rafalski. Long term too. I know he's good with puck and a local guy, but I haven't watched enough Devils' games to know just how good he is and if he's worth that kind of long term money.

Psyer? Pumpy? Others?

He's small, but other than that is pretty great at everything. I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger deal when it became clear that he wouldn't re-sign with the Devils. For equal money, I'd take Rafa over Schneider without a doubt. He doesn't get hurt and never squawks.

so far, the 9 UFA's we know salary for have averaged a 46% raise ($1,212,500) ranging from Zednik's 14% pay cut to McLean's 133% raise

Gee, the lockout did wonders to keeping salaries down.

I love Briere but I wouldn't have wanted the Sabres to pay $10 mil for him this season.

The lockout wasn't intended to keep salaries down, per se. It was intended to ensure that they don't grow more than revenues. So the lockout is working exactly like it was supposed to.

This comes from the forum on hockeybuzz.com, but seems plausible enough...

Quote:
No, a no movement clause means McCabe can't be traded or demoted or moved to any other team without McCabe's permission. He cannot be put on waivers because no one would be allowed to claim him, thus causing him to move.

The only thing the Leafs can do without McCabe's permission is buy him out.

Penguins re-sign Ryan Whitney to a 6 year, $24M extension.

Seems a little high now, but they have cap space. And in years 5 and 6 of that deal, $4M will be a steal.

well, he's healthy, for one. he plays 82 games a year. and for his size, he's quite a good defender. he can handle most forwards who outweigh him by a lot. he is a fairly good skater. and his shot, mostly on the pp, is very deflectable, which is where he gets a good amount of his points from. and he can kill penalties.

his downside, though, is his turnovers. he doesnt have a great breakout pass (many go for icing), or are just intercepted up the middle. he handled the puck pretty horribly against the sens in the playoffs.

all in all, it's probably a nice upgrade for detroit, and rafalski should be very excited to be playing at home. but $6m when he's 38 could be a problem...

Just got back and saw this. I guess we needed an offensive defenseman, but there has got to be cheaper out there. Now if Selanne retires, we really could have used the space under the cap for a scorer.

Semi-speculative stuff ...

Oilers have apparently traded Jason Smith to the Flyers. One rumor had Smith and Lupul for Pitkanen and Geoff Sanderson. No confirmation other than the fact that Smith has been traded.

From a Ducks press release earlier ... take it for what it's worth.

Quote:
“Scott Niedermayer has informed me that he is leaning toward retirement,” said Burke. “Typical of his character and leadership, he made the call this morning in order to allow us to make alternative plans in the event he does not return. Although he has not retired and would be welcomed back, we felt adding another top NHL defenseman was critical to defending our championship. Mathieu Schneider fits into that category and will be a great addition to our team.”

Other substantive (ie, non-Eklund) rumors ... Blake to Toronto, Ryan Smyth to the Avs. Supposedly both are very close.

Gomez leaves behind a half empty arena, the prospect of playing his whole career in near anonymity and a team on the downswing (aging Brodeur) for a resurgent Ranger team that people actually give a shit about. Win-Win.

To be fair, that could be one sick line/PP with Ovechkin-Kozlov-Semin.

Hannan to the Avs.
I'm probably one of the few Avs fan not to be all that hot for Hannan; I'm just not sure he's the best fit for the existing squad. Still, $4.5 million seems lower than he could have gotten.

AND the better news is that it doesn't leave any room for Sheldon Souray...heavily rumored to be coming here.

I had him pegged around 5.5 million - compared to the Rafalski and especially the Schneider contract, 4.5 seems pretty nice.

Smyth has been rumored to be coming to Colorado since well before the trade deadline. Wherever he's going, I wish he'd hurry up and get there.

it's been floating around for about 2 weeks now. the pic is supposedly legit, in that it was taken somewhere inside the Wang Center in mid-May (obviously, before they decided to axe Mr Yashin). Whether it depicts the new jersey, a rejected prototype, or something else, no one really knows. it's not like the Islanders aren't known for putting gaudy jerseys on the ice.

Too bad...the early 80s jerseys were gorgeous.
