:uts on debate nerd hat:: The problem with power-matching is that it's really useful for separating the wheat from the chaff, but it's flawed is essentially the good teams end up with a tough SOS and the bad teams are able to backdoor their way into the bracket. Also the first two rounds of any debate tournament are randomized, so the idea is that if a team feasts on Illinois and Rutgers in back to back weeks, that a game against Michigan should set them straight. But I've seen good teams get borked because of a tough draw early in a tournament and then go down to bad judging and when you're down to 0-3, it can be difficult even with 3 straight wins to get yourself into playoff position. Sports is similar, but in college football, you can't really afford to lose a game and certainly not two. Power-matching would really accelerate how good teams beat up on each other in evenly matched leagues. But it's a cute article, since the overlap between people who do college football stats and have run a debate tab room is pretty small. |

See, I think good teams beating up on each other = good football.

While true, that is not even the biggest hurdle. In a debate team you just walk down the hall to a different room/table. In college football where you have to charter flights and buses, arrange stadium workers, traffic control etc. You simply can't do that with 2 weeks notice. Sounds great on a computer video game. Impossible in real life. |

Not to mention not all teams play in stadiums used strictly for football. Good luck getting the multi-purpose facilities to block off all Saturdays in November because there might be a game. |

Under that plan you would know which week you would be home and away, just not the opponent. So that wouldn't be an issue, the away team would know they were traveling but not the destination. I would imagine the conference could handle things like accommodation; it would be a change sure but I don't see why it wouldn't be workable. |

Fans manage to travel to championship games and they dont know if they are going.
This way they know when they are away. Its not hard to arrange travel in 6 days.

Sure. But my motivation to go to a bowl game or conference championship is quite a bit higher than a normal mid-season conference game.

Just book a place for a team. Again, we know which teams have home games. I doubt Hampton Inn cares if they are hosting Michigan vs. Michigan State.

Yeah, the Hampton Inn was mostly for comedic effect. I know they travel a little more upscale.

The article specifically says you would know who was home in each week, and then you would be matched up with a team with the same record where possible. As for the hotel issue, they would still know a football team would need somewhere to stay that weekend. Would it really matter which one? Just say that during the flex weeks the home team are responsible for booking the accommodation |

I'll read read the article, because I'm missing something there.
My hotel point was major college teams are paid by hotel chains to be the official hotel of XYZ university. Clemson stays in Hyatt properties, FSU stays in Hilton properties. They ain't staying in the other...not without some coin changing hands |

Here's the relevant part:

As for the hotel thing, that may be the case. Hard to believe they wouldn't get over it if they were told to. Can't believe that's the case in college football but not in the NFL, but the NFL has no issue flexing games on a couple weeks notice for ratings. |

Really, though, what does it matter? If an Alabama player gets ejected, you bring in the next stud. Their depth allows them to play dirty.
Which is why I dont like Alabama or Saban.

What doubts? I didn't say a thing about them not being good. They are supremely talented and the scum bag of a coach is the single best coach in the college game and one of the top 2 coaches in ALL of football. It doesn't change how dirty that drive was. It doesn't change the fact he's a douche bag. (remember when he lobbied against the hurry up because it was dangerous to the players? That same guy doesn't think it's too dangerous to his players, because he runs it now) Bama can win by 75 points. It doesn't change how dirty that drive was. They have been better after that drive. But I have zero doubt they'll start up again in the second half if they want to make a point. |

Really? I didn't have a reply in the new years day final four games that I remember. I commented on exactly one NFL game this week about the dirty hits from the Steelers. In both cases, I replied to others posts before I jumped in and agreed. (so I wasn't exactly alone in feeling the way I did) My hatred of all things Nick Saban is pretty well documented. I think he's an horrific person and have for years. Hell, I've only had one or two really good rants about the refs this year. I'm good, but thanks for your worrying about me. Appreciate it. |

The Bama defense is just too good. They make it so that staying on schedule means nothing. 9 yards on first down, so you are going to go for that deep ball on 2nd and 1? Well, you miss the deep ball, you are going to miss the 3rd and 1 70% of the time, so you should probably try to run it there.
FWIW, the Clemson player should have been ejected for that hit. Dropped his helmet, drove it into the head of a Bama player. Clear targeting IMHO. He should be gone and Bama should get 15 yards and a first down. |

Ben Boulware is the reason I don't feel sorry for Clemson taking all the dirty hits from Bama.

See, part of me wishes this would happen, but I can't wish it on the players. I'd love to see Saban lose a game 75 to 0. I might cry. But watching those kids get carted off the field when NFL players destroy them wouldn't be all that fun. I'd give Hurd about a 5% chance of making it out of the game with a future in football. |

Took Clemson at +200 tonight with the hope that they would at least be close enough for me to pay attention. If they don't blow a coverage like that again, I might even make a few bucks.

The ncaa needs to start calling those pick plays because there's nothing a defense can do when they're run well.
Stop giving the benefit of the doubt and call them. |

Never mind the impact on tempo ... the number of replays is getting ridiculous.
