I was thinking of finally pulling the trigger and taking Sandler for movies, but I've pretty much decided on my last two picks already (as long as they don't get taken). I think it's a good pick.

I had considered Sandler for movies, as well.

O'Hara is a tremendous pick. She was on my board, but I was afraid I had gone beyond the norm too many times already, and once I decided on Christopher Guest I felt that going back to one of his most frequent co-stars disrupted my team balance.

I am somewhat suprised Sandler last this long. He's a hit-and-miss guy. There's not telling who will like which if any of his movies. I liked The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore, but I'd rather get kicked in the nuts a few hundred times than watch The Waterboy or most of his other flicks. Conversely, there are people who like The Waterboy who hate his romantic comedy fluff.

Still, the guy is box office gold and I consider him strongly throughout the draft.

However, if we can agree on how to do it, I think that it would be neat if all of the team owners had to vote, but had to vote for a team other than their own.

We are as invested in this draft as anyone, and it is kind of a shame that (I assume) all of our votes are just going to go for our own teams. Kind of a waste of good knowledge there.
I'm with albion if anybody else is. I might vote for somebody's else team anyway if I think they did a better job than me, but I think it would a nice gesture if we all didn't vote for ourselves.

OK - I have two standup slots left to fill, and am actually surprised that this person is still around. Although he hasn't been on tv in the past couple years, he had a very successful show (and a very successful stand up career prior to that)...

Tim Allen, standup

Roger Roger, What's your vector Victor?

I know it's a different movie, but anytime I see Leslie Nielsen - I immediately think of Airplane and how much I love that movie

Very solid pick. I actually planned on taking him as my sitcom pick next round -- I figured that since I was the only one left without a sitcom pick I could wait, but he's a great standup pick too.

kcchief sent in a pick... unfortunately, it was for someone who was taken 60 picks ago. So he's still on the clock.

Well, I have one more standup pick, so maybe we are both safe from stealing each others picks.

As I chided Sean privately -- and now publicly -- if the guy's name had been spelled correctly on the front page I wouldn't have tried to draft him again.

Leslie Nielsen was a great pick. I probably should have taken him instead of Goldie Hawn and gone with Catherine O'Hara as another female pick.

For my final selection, since I don't have a 10th round pick, I'm going with Albert Brooks (standup). The younger kids probably don't remember him as a standup that much, but his work on movies and The Simpsons has almost always been gold to me.

Buddy Hackett-standup.

A young couple go into a cemetary to have sex. A couple days later the young lady goes to the doctor complaining of lower back pain. The doctor sits and listens for a few minutes before asking her to disrobe. She disrobes. As he examines her backside, he asks her how old she is.

"Why I'm 26." She says.

"That's funny, it says on your ass that you died in 1776."

I'm confused, how do you not have a 10th round pick?

This has been a lot of fun to watch. I wanted to paticipate, but I am working on a show right now and am mostly away from my computer.

I think I have a pretty good team of undrafted free-agents shaping up that I'll post when the draft is over.

I get the feeling that this is one of those picks that only I will like, but I'll do my best to explain why I like it:

Tom Smothers (Talk Show/Variety)

Along with his brother Dick, Tom lead a show whose subversive nature was belied by the clean cut appearance of its hosts:

Quote:
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, starring the folk singing, comedy duo Tom and Dick Smothers, premiered on CBS in February 1967. A variety show scheduled opposite the top rated NBC programme, Bonanza, the Comedy Hour attracted a younger, hipper, and more politically engaged audience than most other video offerings of the 1960s. The show's content featured irreverent digs at many dominant institutions such as organized religion and the presidency. It also included sketches celebrating the hippie drug culture and material opposing the war in Vietnam. These elements made The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour one of the most controversial television shows in the medium's history.
Also, Pete Townshend almost blew himself up on their show when some pyrotechnics misfired--which was pretty cool and has to count for something

D'oh. I should have read the board. Smothers would have still been there after Swaggs picked. While my final stand-up choice may not be.

It's been my experience that Swaggs has always prefered his women to be standups, if you know what I mean.

Sorry for the delay and that everyone else had to listen to the running commentary by ML and kcchief...

With pick 9.10, I take Wanda Sykes. One of the funnier recent standups to emerge onto the scene.

Interesting. I'm stuck between two female standups for my next pick, and figured Swaggs would make it easy on me by taking one. He didn't.

Finalizing my team with pick 10.1, I pick Ray Romano.

His long running sitcom, "Everbody Loves Raymond," was based on his standup.

There's nobody left who has a standup spot and needs a woman, so I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying this (and if I am, good, because I hope she gets picked): I really wanted to take Rita Rudner here. I think she's hilarious, and she's the only woman to have her own permanent standup show in Vegas. That has to count for something.

But in the end, I can't pass up the chance to take an all-time standup legend who happens to be female. I'm surprised she's still on the board.

10.4 - Phyllis Diller (standup)

For what it is worth, my female standup pick was between Diller and Sykes. I picked Sykes with the thought that she is more current and more of the folks on this board are probably familiar with her.

Female sketch comedy...

This is probably just a personal pick. I really liked her on SNL. With my final pick, I take Mary Catherine Gallagher, Superstar!

For my final pick, I select a man known for his one liners, many of which still hold up in jokes told today.

Henny Youngman, stand up

I didn't bother with my sitcom pick last round because I was the only one without one, and figured that I'd have my choice of Tim Allen or Ray Romano in the tenth. That worked out well.

It may be a good thing, though, since it forces me to think outside the box a bit. I seriously considered Kelsey Grammar here -- a record twenty years playing the same sitcom character, not to mention a recurring role on the Simpsons. I also scouted Jackie Gleason as an old school pick, as well as Kevin James because I like his standup.

But in the end I went with a guy who created two of the funniest TV characters of all time -- which is impressive, considered they're almost completely different types of humor.

10.7 - Rowan Atkinson, sitcom

Solid. I wanted him for my last pick, but I looked it up and he didn't really do stand-up. (Well, he apparently did one show in Boston, but that was basically a bunch of sketch skits on stage, so it was not really stand-up).

I'm glad that he made the final cut on someone's team in one of the two areas in which he actually performed.

I came really close to taking Jackie Gleason for my sitcom pick...I honestly don't think it gets any better than that. The other one I was considering was Carroll O'Conner for Archie Bunker, but even today that show is pretty controversial and has some ugliness to it...plus I needed a female so I went with the ageless Mary Tyler Moore.

Yes, he's done some one-man shows as well as some live sketch work with a straight man. They're really good -- have a look at this one. But they're probably closer to "sketch" than "standup".

My final pick has been the toughest for me. Not because I can't find anyone, but because I have too many personal favorites to choose from: 3 to be exact. I think I could pick a more famous person (for the judges), but I'm going to have to continue picking my personal favorites:

Eugene Levy - Sketch (SCTV).

The man is hilarious. He doesn't even have to say anything, and I bust out laughing. He just exudes this good-natured humor, no matter what movie/show he's in (even the bad ones). His role (along with Catherine O'Hara) in "Best In Show" is one of my all-time favorites.
