Congrats to the Saints. There was no way I was going to pick against Manning who I despise and respect an equal amount. The fact that it was a pick 6 is even more shocking. Vikings fans have to be kicking themselves right now considering how badly the Vikings outplayed the Saints outside of the TOs.

One of the bigger "What ifs" is what if the Chargers kept Brees instead...

Vikings cant win on grass and the Colts would won. Saints earned it tonight and played much better than I thought they could. The Saints proved they were the best team in the league tonight which makes up for that questionable NFC Championship game performance.

Oh, and my vote was Hartley for MVP for keeping them in it until the offense really got rolling (and even then they mostly settled for FGs). Brees is a decent choice, but kicking 3 long FGs to keep them within shouting distance was huge.

This was a very interesting game.

The Colts dominated the first quarter and lost the momentum after the dropped pass from Garcon.

From then on it seemed like the Colts could never get the ball back consistently.

I will never for the life of me understand why the Colts dont play an aggressive style defense to try and get Peyton more possessions. They basically play a defense designed for a team with a shitty offense.

Thing is, I'd imagine there are more people aged 35+ watching the game than under 35. And if you're older than 35, you probably know The Who.* Going forward (as these guys die off), what bands are going to have that kind of cross-generational pull? The timeframe the bands covered will eventually shift, but who comes out of the 80s? 90s? 00s?

I wonder (and this is probably a question for Jon, once he gets past his NO rage), who should they go for here demographically? Are young kids even watching? If they are, are they sticking around for half-time anyway? Is there even a genre of music that could connect with enough of the audience? Seems like musical interests are more diverse (segmented) these days.

I think there are some big names out there that would be much better draws and much more entertaining than a band like The Who, but who knows if everyone they ask says yes? Anyways, some obvious ones in my mind:

Madonna (this is the biggie)
Jay-Z/Beyonce/Kanye triple threat
KISS
AC/DC
Pearl Jam
Green Day
Neil Young


You might have to combine 2 or 3 of the ones at the end, like a PJ + Neil Young or throw Green Day in there too.

I'm really happy that N.O. won, being a Dolphin fan with a deep-seated hatred of The Colts and Peyton Manning, but watching his post-game news conference - goddamn he's on hell of a professional. Taking responsibility, being humble, respectful - basically impossible to hate now.

Saints D showed again that they are underrated. They feed off the strength of the offense, no doubt. But even when they get gashed for yards (and occationally points) they fight and hit hard on every play, and they can make big plays themselves. Any D that can hold Warner and Manning to 17 points in the post season, while beating three future HOF QBs, they must be pretty good. Greg Williams said this week that he thought his big strength was motivating players above coaching a certain scheme, I think he is absolutely right.

The city is sick right now. Only reason I am back home now is to rest up for the activity of the coming week.

Heh. KISS had occurred to me, in a "oh no - I hope they don't try asking KISS" kinda way. Neil Young isn't a whole lot younger than The Who, and I'm not sure his best songs really get crowds fired up (do they? Seems...mellower to me).

Madonna would be obvious, but I doubt she'd do it. AC/DC I could see. Pearl Jam and Green Day would be a couple of bands from the 90s who have done a good job of hanging around. Jay-Z/Beyonce/Kanye...that really starts to skew younger I guess - I know I'd be too curmudgeonly for it.

Didn't read this thread at all during the game, but a very enjoyable game and great effort from the Saints in quarters 2 through 4.

If I had to throw a wild guess out there, I'd say we're getting close to seeing artists picked for their appeal to women. The gap between male viewers 18+ & female viewers 18+ keeps getting narrower every year & is now less than 10% apart. If that trend continues, there's a chance that we'll see the audience be pretty close to 50-50.

Are young kids even watching?

IIRC, the under 18's and under 12's do okay but 18-24 is still drifting away from commercial TV even for the NFL.

Actually movies are the single biggest spender on SB ads from 05-09, so the increase probably isn't much if any this year. Movies were over 1/3rd of all SB ad spending in '09 and almost matched beer+cars combined last year ($42m vs $45m combined)

and before i heard they were going to perform at the halftime show i couldn't have told you that all the members of The Who were still alive, let alone could pick up their instruments without help, so I think they're the epitome of "hanging around" by that definition
