I have made my selections for Team Canada for the World Championships. It's interesting to see who declines the invitation. I expected stars like Joe Thornton and Derek Morris to decline but then Patrick Marleau and Rick Nash accept. Meanwhile, players like Martin Grenier and Steve Montador decline. I don't have the line combinations set, but here is the roster of 26:

Rick Nash - Patrick Marleau - Justin Williams
Jonathan Cheechoo - Brian Sutherby - Matthew Barnaby
Simon Gagne - Derek Roy - Scott Walker
Kyle Calder - Mike Fisher - J.P. Dumont
Kirk Maltby - Curtis Brown - Jordan Tootoo

Cam Barker - Mike Rathje
Jay McKee - Andrew Ference
Colin White - Brad Brown
Willie Mitchell - Mike Green

Patrick Lalime
Jose Theodore
Sebastien Caron

Los Angeles appoint Neil Smith as General Manager.

Game 1: Edmonton @ Calgary
We lost four games in the season series against Edmonton. Despite garnering 33 points more than them during the year, this will be a difficult series. I'll be starting Kiprusoff and our defence is solid. My top two lines are set but the third and fourth lines are up in the air and I really have no idea who to play where. I decide to avoid using players on the bottom two lines who have low morale. Peat and Myers are currently very low. Jacobs is very low as well but I'm hoping he snaps out of it. He's on a short leash. This is the lineup I'll go with, playing just three for the forwards and a normal for the defence.

Ruthemann - Iginla - Kobasew
Cole - Richards - Kolar
Jacobs - Madden - Nilson
Chucko - Gardner - Spets

Phaneuf - Tanabe
Mara - Warrener
Jackman - Souray

Kiprusoff
Buhrer

1:51 into the game, Martin Lapointe quickly makes it 1-0. In the second, Kolar ties the game. 1:53 later, a Gardner wristshot makes it 2-1. Pouliot answers for Edmonton to tie the game at 2. With Stoll off for tripping, Kobasew scores at the 11:05 mark of the third period to make it 3-2. With Cam Ward out of the net, Madden seals the deal. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Edmonton 2. (GWG: Chuck Kobasew) We outshot Edmonton 33-20. We were only 1/5 on the powerplay but managed to kill off six penalties. Spets was the only one with a '6' rating. Chucko will be out for a few days with a facial laceration. More importantly, Kiprusoff got banged up which sees his conditioning drop to 65%. My instructions to use only three lines were ignored as the fourth line saw plenty of action.

* John Madden (1g, '8')
** Chuck Kobasew (1g, 1ht, '8')
*** Greg Gardner (1g, 2ht, '8')

Game 2: Edmonton @ Calgary
Buhrer has to start. Chucko is 100% and stays in as he played well last game. Even though Stephen Peat's morale is very low, I don't feel comfortable with Spets in the lineup. His attributes are good but he seems to be a liability defensively. Peat replaces him on the fourth line right wing. I leaves the instructions to only use three lines as is.

Buhrer keeps us in early. Mara hits the post. With Peat off for hooking, Hemsky scores on the powerplay to make it 1-0. Warrener hits the post. In the second, Kozlov makes it 2-0. Ruthemann then follows his own rebound and gets us on the board. Souray hits the post. Iginla then ties the game at 2. Cole gives us a 3-2 lead. 15 seconds into the third period, Madden deflects a Jackman shot to make it 4-2. Ruthemann then dangles Laflamme and makes it 5-2. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Edmonton 2. (GWG: Erik Cole) We outshot Edmonton 43-17 but were 0/4 on the powerplay. Buhrer was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Erik Cole (1g, 1a, +2, '8')
** Jarome Iginla (1g, 1a, +2, 1ht, '8')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (2g, +2, '8')

Game 3: Calgary @ Edmonton
Another dilemma: Kiprusoff with very good morale but only 88% or Buher with low morale but at 100%. I decide to go with Buhrer. I also have to replace Phaneuf (79%) with Frogren. Spets replaces Peat because I'm wary of giving away too many powerplays.

With 18 seconds left in the first, Jacobs makes it 1-0 with a backhand shot past Jimmy Howard. 1:53 into the second, Jarret Stoll ties the game at 1. 35 seconds later, Jacobs regains the lead. York answers to tie the game at 2. Jacobs gets his hattrick to make it 3-2. In the third, Jacobs gets a breakaway but Howard is equal to the task including stoning Jacobs on his own rebound. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Edmonton 2. (GWG: Jens Jacobs) Both teams had 30 shots on goal. We were 0/2 on the powerplay while Edmonton was 0/5. Kolar, Spets and Chucko got '6' ratings.

* Jens Jacobs (3g, +2, '10')
** John Madden (2a, +3, 1ht, '8')
*** Mike York (1g, '8')

Game 4: Calgary @ Edmonton
Kiprusoff is 100% so he starts. Phaneuf in for Frogren. Peat in for Spets.

Iginla opens the scoring. In the second, Souray hits the post. Ruthemann then makes it 2-0. A Nilson slapshot makes it 3-0. In the third, Barney gets Edmonton on the board. With Barney off for cross-checking, Kobasew capitalizes on the powerplay. Phaneuf hit the post. Kobasew scores his second of the game on another powerplay. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Edmonton 1. (GWG: Ivo Ruthemann) We outshot Edmonton 30-16 and were 2/7 on the powerplay. Peat was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 2a, +2, '10')
** Chuck Kobasew (2g, +1, 3ht, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')

Calgary defeats Edmonton, 4 games to 0.

World Championship Preliminary Round: Game 1 vs. Germany
I start Theodore in goal. His reputation has dropped to 'Good' despite great attributes. Toronto's, Justin Williams opens the scoring beating Kolzig for a 1-0 lead. San Jose's, Jonathan Cheechoo makes it 2-0. With 56 seconds left in the first period, Germany scores on a Theodore rebound. 1:44 into the second, Cheechoo gets his second of the game to make it 3-1. Columbus', Rick Nash makes it 4-1. In the third, Germany scores its second goal on another Theodore rebound. 11 seconds later, Toronto's, Matthew Barnaby answers. 17 seconds after that, Germany again cuts the lead to two. Williams gets his second of the game on the powerplay to make it 6-3. Barnaby gets his second to make it 7-3. Final Score: Canada 7 - Germany 3. We outshot Germany 42-27 but were only 1/8 on the powerplay. Detroit's, Scott Walker and Buffalo's, Curtis Brown, got '6' ratings.

* Jonathan Cheechoo (2g, 2a, +3, 1ht, '10')
** Justin Williams (2g, 1a, +2, 2ht, '9')
*** Matthew Barnaby(2g, +1, 1ht, '8')

World Championship Preliminary Round: Game 2 vs. Slovakia
Patrick Lalime starts. I move Barker out of the top six defencemen but he'll still see time on the powerplay. I also decide to use a dump & chase style - a simplified gameplan if you will. Ottawa's, Marian Hossa opens the scoring on the powerplay. Slovakia dominates the first period. At the start of the second period, Stumpel hits the post. Just after we fail on yet another powerplay, Philadelphia's, Simon Gagne ties the game at 1. Phoenix's, Brian Sutherby gives us a one goal lead. Phoenix's, Ladislav Nagy ties the game for Slovakia. I bench Minnesota's, Willie Mitchell for the third period. On a Gaborik forecheck, he strips Sutherby and sets up a point shot which finds the mark for a 3-2 lead. With 1:30 left in the third, Columbus', Rick Nash ties the game. 16 seconds later, Nash gives us a one goal lead. With 10 seconds left in the game and the Slovakian goalie out, Minnesota's, Marian Gaborik ties it up. Final Score: Slovakia 4 - Canada 4. We outshot Slovakia 41-20 but were 0/5 on the powerplay. Dumont, Tootoo, Brown and White got '6' ratings. Lalime got a '5' rating. I can't discipline him in any way.

* Ladislav Nagy (1g, 2a, +3, 2ht, '9')
** Marian Gaborik (1g, 1a, +2, 3ht, '8')
*** Patrick Marleau (2a, +2, 1ht, '9')

World Championship Preliminary Round: Game 3 vs. Latvia
Sebastien Caron gets the start. (Lalime was put in instead.) 1:02 into the game, Dumont makes it 1-0. Semjonovs answers on the powerplay to tie the game. 10 seconds later, Marleau regains the lead. Rathje hit the post. With 1:16 left in the period, Galuzo ties the game for Latvia. Fisher scores in the second to make it 3-2. Williams hits the post. Marleau scores a powerplay goal to make it 4-2. Semjonovs gets his second. In the third, Zholtok scores to tie the game at 4. 1:11 later, Sutherby regains the lead for Canada. Final Score: Canada 5 - Latvia 4. A little too close for comfort. We outshot Latvia, 46-13. Curtis Brown and Brad Brown got '6' ratings. Lalime got another '5' rating.

* Brian Sutherby (1g, 1a, +2, 2ht, '8')
** Alexander Semjonovs (2g, -1, '8')
*** Patrick Marleau (2g, -1, '8')

World Championship Qualifying: Game 4 vs. USA
I start Theodore, put Barnaby back in (8 defencemen were dressed last game for some reason), and put Derek Roy into the lineup now that he's healthy. Unfortunately, the AI is overriding my decisions. I don't want to play the game out in full because the playoff game is occuring at the same time. Marleau opens the scoring, 32 seconds into the game. In the second, Werner ties the game. Wilson makes it 2-1 on the powerplay. Connolly makes it 3-1 for the US, again on the powerplay. Marleau scores late in the third. Final Score: USA 3 - Canada 2. We outshot them but gave up two powerplay goals while going 0/4.

* Patrick Marleau (2g, +2, 1ht, '8')
** Landon Wilson (1g, '8')
*** Rick Nash (2a, +2, '8')

World Championship Qualifying: Game 5 vs. Italy
The Flames played an afternoon game and this is an evening game. I tried to set up the lines like I want and use my tactics but the AI is ignoring me. We win 9-1. (*Simon Gagne, **J.P. Dumont, ***Colin White)

World Championship Qualifying: Game 6 vs. Czech Republic
I turn everything over to the assistants (even though there aren't any). We win 4-2 and qualify for the quarterfinals. (*Mike Green, **Rick Nash, ***Justin Williams).

World Championship Quarter-Finals
Sweden 3 vs. Germany 3 (Germany wins in a shootout)
USA 2 vs. Russia 6
Slovakia 2 vs. Finland 0
Switzerland 1 vs. Canada 4 (*J.P. Dumont, **Scott Walker, ***Willie Mitchell)

Dallas (6) vs. Calgary (1)

Dallas payroll: $71.49 million
Calgary payroll: $47.55 million

Head to Head this season:
11/18/07 - Dallas 0 @ Calgary 4
12/19/07 - Calgary 3 @ Dallas 2 (OT)
01/13/08 - Dallas 3 @ Calgary 1
01/30/08 - Calgary 4 @ Dallas 2

Dallas injuries:
F Jason Weimer - out for 3 weeks with a sprained ACL

Calgary injuries:
none

Game 1: Dallas @ Calgary
Kiprusoff starts. No changes on defence. I take the kids, Chucko and Gardner out, and replace them with Myers and Spets. Myers' attributes have jumped up. I keep the strategy to "Just Three".

5:14 in, Kobasew blows a slapshot past Turco to make it 1-0. In the second, Marek Tomica gets a 5 minute major and game misconduct for a knee-on-knee hit on Tanabe. We fail to score on the powerplay. No scoring in the second period. 22 seconds into the third, Richards intercepts a Turco pass and makes it 2-0. Ruthemann adds one more. 56 seconds later, Iginla scores to make it 4-0. Tkachuk gets called for slashing and Ruthemann scores a powerplay goal. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Dallas 0. (GWG: Chuck Kobasew) We outshot Dallas 27-18. Kolar and Peat got '6' ratings. DAL F Jakub Sindel will be out for two months with a dislocated shoulder. DAL F Marek Tomica gets a three game suspension. DAL D Tim Gleason is out for a week with a twisted knee.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 3a, +3, 2ht, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (2g, 1a, +2, 2ht, '9')
*** Brad Richards (1g, 2a, +3, '9')

Game 2: Dallas @ Calgary
Kiprusoff starts. Frogren in for Mara (74%). Chucko in for Peat who has posted two back-to-back 6's and has very low morale.

0:53 in, Warrener hits the post. 42 seconds later, Eric Daze makes it 1-0. Phaneuf ties the game. No scoring in the second. 1:02 into the third, former Flame, Denis Gauthier, gives Dallas the lead. Final Score: Dallas 2 - Calgary 1. (GWG: Denis Gauthier) Game stats were even. Nilson and Spets got '6' ratings.

* Denis Gauthier (1g, -1, 4ht, '8')
** Marty Turco (32 saves, '9')
*** Dion Phaneuf (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')

Game 3: Calgary @ Dallas
Buhrer starts. Mara in for Frogren. Spets is out, Gardner is in and I move Iginla back to right wing, shaking things up. This reunites Richards and Iginla. Kolar has done nothing the past few games so he's demoted to the third line, as is Cole, both who have done nothing the last four games. I also switch to an Overload strategy, favouring the top two lines.

Tkachuk opens the scoring on the powerplay. Madden answers to tie the game. Kobasew makes it 2-1. In the second, Chucko makes it 3-1. In the third, Tkachuk gets a 5 minute major and game misconduct for kneeing Myers. Again, we are unable to score on the powerplay but Daze gets one shortly after to make it 3-2. Ruthemann scores into the empty net. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Dallas 2. (GWG: Kris Chucko) Game stats were even. Dallas was 1/7 on the powerplay, we were 0/3. No one got a '6' rating.

* Chuck Kobasew (1g, 1a, +2, 1ht, '8')
** David Tanabe (2a, +4, 3ht, '9')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, '8')

Game 4: Calgary @ Dallas
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup.

No scoring in the first. In the second, with Cole off for hooking, Guerin makes it 1-0. 18 seconds into the third, Daze scores. Final Score: Dallas 2 - Calgary 0. (GWG: Bill Guerin) We outshot Dallas 26-17 but were 0/7 on the powerplay. Nilson, Gardner, Madden, Chucko and Kiprusoff got '6' ratings.

* Marty Turco (26 saves, '9')
** Bill Guerin (1g, '8')
*** Eric Daze (1g, +1, '8')

Game 5: Dallas @ Calgary
I go with my gut and play Buhrer. I go back to playing Iginla at center. Jacobs has replaced Cole on the second line. Cole has replaced Kolar on the second powerplay unit. Peat is in for Gardner despite having a very low morale. I want grit on the fourth line. I set the instructions to just use three forward lines.

1:00 into the game, Guerin makes it 1-0. In the second, Ponikarovsky hit the post but there was no scoring. In the third, with Gauthier off for interference, Jacobs scores a powerplay goal to tie the game. Bordeleau scores in overtime. Final Score: Dallas 2 - Calgary 1 (OT). (GWG: Sebastien Bordeleau @ 8:31 OT). We were outshot 30-25 and went 1/6 on the powerplay. No one got a '6' rating.

* Sebastien Bordeleau (1g, +1, 1ht, '8')
** Brendan Morrow (1a, +1, 1ht, '8')
*** Marty Turco (24 saves, '8')

Game 6: Calgary @ Dallas
Kiprusoff starts. Frogren in for Phaneuf (77%). Spets in for Peat on the fourth line. Gardner in for Myers. I put Cole and Jacobs together on the second line. Kolar is demoted to the fourth line for being -2 with 0 points in the last 7 games. Chucko gets promoted to the third line for solid play. I used "Just Three" for the forward lines.

Boyle hits the post. Francis Wathier drops the gloves with Jan Kolar and destroys Kolar in the process; Kolar isn't doing anything for us. No scoring in the first. Iginla gets on the board in the second. About three minutes later, Warrener makes it 2-0. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Dallas 0. (GWG: Jarome Iginla). We were outshot 29-19 and killed off seven Dallas powerplay opportunities. Gardner and Kolar got '6' ratings. Unfortunately, while not injured, both Souray and Tanabe see their conditioning drop to below 60% and probably won't be ready for the next game.

* Miikka Kiprusoff (29 saves, '9')
** Erik Cole (2a, +2, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, +1, '8')

Game 7: Dallas @ Calgary
Kiprusoff starts. Phaneuf (87%) is back in. I don't know what to do with Souray (75%) and Tanabe (74%). I have no choice but to force D Grant Lewis (23) into the lineup. Myers goes in for Gardner whose morale has dropped to low after posting back-to-back '6' ratings. Kolar's morale is 'Very Low'. The only other option is Peat, whose morale is also 'Very Low' or Pollastrone who is 'Ok' but hasn't seen any action this post-season. I'm wary of throwing in two guys into game seven who have yet to see any action. I roll the dice, take Kolar out of the lineup and put in Pollastrone. I use an overload strategy on defence and 'just three' for the forward lines.

Hamrlik gets called early for holding the stick and Kobasew opens the scoring with a much need powerplay goal. 22 seconds into the second period, Madden makes it 2-0. In the third, Kobasew gets a 5 minute major for kneeing Daze. Morrow scores on the subsequent powerplay. Late in the period, Jacobs gets called for charging but we manage to kill it off. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Dallas 1. (GWG: John Madden). We were 1/7 on the powerplay and outhit 27-11. Dallas outplayed us in this game. Myers, Spets and Ruthemann get '6' ratings.

* Miikka Kiprusoff (21 saves, '8')
** Chuck Kobasew (1g, '8')
*** Brendan Morrow (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')

Calgary defeats Dallas, 4 games to 3.

I get a news report saying that several sports writers are questioning the ability of Myers to handle the pressure. I naturally defend the player and his morale increases.

World Championship Semi-Finals
Slovakia 2 vs. Russia 4

Germany vs. Canada
I play this one out in full since the Flames are off. I decide to ride Lalime who's played well the last two games and has a very good morale. In the first, we fail to capitalize on several powerplay opportunities and Kolzig keeps Germany in the game. Hecht hits the post. No scoring in the first. No scoring in the second. After two periods, we're outshooting them but only 14-9. With 4:18 left in the game, Germany scores to make it 1-0. Germany scores into the empty net. Final Score: Germany 2 - Canada 0.

Western Conference Final

Vancouver (4) vs. Calgary (1)

Vancouver payroll: $76.775 million
Calgary payroll: $47.55 million

Head to Head this season:
10/28/07 - Vancouver 3 @ Calgary 1
11/27/07 - Calgary 4 @ Vancouver 3
12/13/07 - Calgary 4 @ Vancouver 2
12/31/07 - Calgary 2 @ Vancouver 4
02/24/08 - Vancouver 1 @ Calgary 7
03/07/08 - Vancouver 5 @ Calgary 1

Vancouver injuries:
F Shane Doan - out for 2 weeks with a pulled groin
F Chris Nielsen - out for a week with a groin strain
F Martin St. Louis - day to day with a shoulder contusion

Calgary injuries:
none

Game 1: Vancouver @ Calgary
Kiprusoff will start at 94% which means regardless of the outcome of game one, Buhrer starts game two. Mara is out (79%) and Frogren is in. I figure Frogren at 100% is better than Mara at 79%. Kolar is in for Pollastrone. I suspect I'll need his offence so I hope he can snap out of his slump. Peat in for Spets despite a very low morale simply because of toughness. Myers centers the fourth line but if he gets a '6' rating, Gardner will step in. I use 'Just Three' for the forward lines and an 'Overload' strategy for the defence. The third defence pairing of Souray - Frogren is a weakness as so far Souray is -2 in the playoffs. I also decide to put Phaneuf on Palffy and match the third line against Vancouver's first line of Palffy-Morrison-St. Louis.

Myers opens the scoring, deflecting a shot from Phaneuf. 1:14 later, Richards makes it 2-0. Ohlund hit the post. Daniel Sedin gets Vancouver on the board. A Kolar shot gets deflected by Iginla for a 3-1 lead. But 1:11 later, Johan Davidsson cuts the lead to one. In the second, Kariya ties the game at 3. Kiprusoff stops Henrik Sedin on a breakaway. Phaneuf hits the post. In the third, Richards hits the post. No scoring in the third. In overtime, both Souray and Pronger take penalties but neither team manages a goal. Palffy hits the crossbar but there's no scoring after the first overtime. In the second overtime, Henrik Sedin gets called for hooking but we can't capitalize on the golden opportunity other than seeing Kolar hit the post. Shortly after, Jovanovski comes through for Vancouver. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 3 (OT) (GWG: Ed Jovanovski @ 5:56 2OT) Vancouver outshot us 47-41 but both teams failed to score a powerplay goal. Kobasew and Kiprusoff got '6' ratings. As suspected, Souray and Frogren were a combined -5. VAN F Kris Beech will be out for 2 months with a dislocated shoulder.

* Ed Jovanovski (1g, 1a, +1, 1ht, '9')
** Brendan Morrison (1a, 1ht, '9')
*** Daniel Sedin (1g, 1a, +3, '8')

Our hopes are gone. Tanabe will be out for a week after suffering a thigh contusion in practice. Iginla will be out for a week after suffering a shoulder contusion in practice.

Game 2: Vancouver @ Calgary
Buhrer starts. Mara in for Tanabe. Iginla is at 90% but injured. I decide to stick him into the lineup. I overload both the defence and forward lines and forget about line matching. Phaneuf is still keying on Palffy.

Henrik Sedin opens the scoring. In the second, Kobasew scores a powerplay goal to tie the game. Palffy answers to regain the lead. In the third, Daniel Sedin scores a powerplay goal to make it 3-1. His second puts the game out of reach. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 1. (GWG: Zigmund Palffy) Game stats were even. Nilson, Chucko and Buhrer got '6' ratings. Kolar gets a '5' and an official warning which he accepts without comment.

* Daniel Sedin (2g, +1, 1ht, '8')
** Tomas Popperle (26 saves, '8')
*** Chris Pronger (2a, +2, 1ht, '8')

Game 3: Calgary @ Vancouver
Kiprusoff starts at 94%. An injured, 85% Tanabe replaces Jackman (75%). No change to the lineup.

No scoring in the first. 38 seconds into the second, Madden scores a shorthanded goal. Kolar finally breaks out of his slump and makes it 2-0. Morrison hits the post. In the third, Kariya hits the post. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Vancouver 0. (GWG: John Madden). Game stats were even. We killed off five penalties. Jacobs was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Miikka Kiprusoff (23 saves, '9')
** John Madden (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')
*** Jan Kolar (1g, 2ht, '8')

Game 4: Calgary @ Vancouver
This is a back-to-back game so I go with Buhrer with Kiprusoff at 85%. Both of Vancouver's goalies are also at 85%. Jovanovski is at 69% but most likely will play. Jackman in for Frogren.

Iginla opens the scoring with a powerplay goal. Cole deflects a Phaneuf shot to make it 2-0. 59 seconds into the second, Kariya makes it 2-1. Kariya gets another to tie the game. 40 seconds later, Chucko makes it 3-2. 31 seconds later, Morrison ties it up. 27 seconds into the third, St. Louis makes it 4-3. With Buhrer out and 11 seconds left in the game, Richards forces overtime. Souray and Warrener get penalties but we manage to kill them off although Kariya hits the post. Both teams had plenty of chances but there was no scoring in the first overtime. Kolar and Iginla get penalties which we manage to kill off. We continue to play with fire as Ruthemann gets called for high-sticking. Sure enough, St. Louis makes us pay. Final Score: Vancouver 5 - Calgary 4 (OT) (GWG: Martin St. Louis @ 12:48 2OT) Buhrer got a '5' rating and an official warning. Warrener, Mara, Phaneuf and Kolar are banged up.

* Martin St. Louis (2g, '9')
** Paul Kariya (2g, +2, '8')
*** Brendan Morrison (1g, 1a, 1ht, '8')

Game 5: Vancouver @ Calgary
Kiprusoff starts. I decide to leave Warrener (74%) and Mara (76%) in the lineup. Phaneuf (56%) comes out for Frogren.

Jovanovski opens the scoring. 29 seconds later, Kariya makes it 2-0. Palffy makes it 3-0. In the second, St. Louis makes it 4-0. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 0. (GWG: Ed Jovanovski) Myers, Richards, Chucko, Jacobs and Cole got '6' ratings. Our defence was exhausted compared to Vancouver's. Game stats were even though. Vancouver just has too much firepower. Unfortunately, firepower costs money.

* Tomas Popperle (22 saves, '8')
** Ed Jovanvoski (1g, 1a, +3, 2ht, '8')
*** Zigmund Palffy (1g, 1a, +3, '8')

Vancouver defeats Calgary, 4 games to 1.

Well, we finished first overall and made the Western Conference Final so it wasn't all bad. We need more flair and creativity in the lineup but unfortunately, those types of players are hard to find and when they are available, cost a lot of money. Two games against Vancouver were double overtime loses.

We have a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup between Vancouver and Tampa. This will be the third time these two teams have met and on both previous occasions, Vancouver won in five games. This is Tampa Bay's fourth consecutive final appearance. I predict Vancouver repeats and gets its third cup in four years.

Thoughts?

The Nashville Predators win the draft lottery. Ottawa, Columbus and Carolina all finished with worse records. The 2008 NHL Entry Draft will take place at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida.

Three junior-aged players have finished their seasons and joined the Flames. I immediately dispatch them back. In retrospect, I shouldn't have signed them as none of them are likely to ever make it. It was a decision based on losing G Taylor Dackers to Colorado. From now on, I won't sign draft picks unless I know they'll play and/or I'm about to lose exclusive rights.

I've qualified D Jonas Frogren (28) but he wants $1 million/year. It's a reasonable offer if he wasn't our seventh defenceman. It's too much money for a team like ours. I decide that D Chris Zarb (23), a 7th Round Pick in 2005, offers the same type of role at 1/3 the price. I will try and trade Frogren's rights before he signs in Europe.

I sign Danish center, Michael Madsen (20), and dispatch him to the ECHL. I also sign my ninth round pick, C Niklas Persson (29), who will probably be our third line center.

Eighth round pick, D Niklas Andersson (22), snubs us saying he doesn't want to play in North America, especially in a minor role.

Calgary trades D Jonas Frogren (28) to Detroit for the rights to RW/C Jaroslav Markovic (23). This is a player I've had my eye on for a while and was on my draft board in 2004.

The free agent bidding is fast and furious but once again my budget is maxed out. My second request for extra wage budget is met with the response that I'm not there to run the business side of the team. If I had the Rangers' budget, I'd win the Stanley Cup every year!

Nashville signs F Viktor Kozlov (33) from Edmonton for $9.1 million/2 years.

Detroit signs F Michael Peca (34) from Montreal for $6.25 million/1 year.

New Jersey signs F Vaclav Prospal (33) from Anaheim for $13 million/2 years.

San Jose trades F Enver Lisin (22) to Los Angeles for the rights to D Robert Nordberg (19).

Philadelphia signs D Brad Brown (32) from Toronto for $4.8 million/2 years.

Boston signs D Brad Lukowich (31) from Tampa Bay for $7.7 million/2 years.

Ottawa signs F Daymond Langkow (31) from Phoenix for $11.75 million/2 years.

St. Louis re-signs D Sergei Gonchar (34) for $14.5 million/2 years.

Anaheim re-signs G J.S. Giguere (31) for $25 million/4 years.

Montreal signs D Scott Niedermayer (34) from St. Louis for $12.25 million/2 years.

Colorado signs F Daniel Alfredsson (35) from Washington for $6.5 million/1 year.

Dallas signs F Chris Drury (31) from Buffalo for $10.05 million/2 years.

Ottawa signs D Lubomir Visnovsky (31) from Los Angeles for $8.1 million/2 years.

Colorado re-signs F Milan Hejduk (32) for $10.5 million/2 years.

Montreal signs F Jamie Langenbrunner (32) from New Jersey for $11.5 million/2 years.

Nashville signs F Ryan Smyth (32) from Toronto for $10.25 million/2 years.

St. Louis re-signs G Nikolai Khabibulin (35) for $4.2 million/2 years.

Ottawa signs D Jason Doig (31) from New Jersey for $5 million/2 years.

Montreal signs F Petr Sykora (31) from Anaheim for $12.25 million/2 years.

New Jersey signs D Roman Hamrlik (34) from Dallas for $11.5 million/2 years.

NY Rangers sign D Wade Redden (31) from Ottawa for $13.9 million/3 years.

Pittsburgh sign F Richard Zednik (32) from Montreal for $9 million/2 years.

Edmonton trades F Jarret Stoll (26) to Chicago for G Michael Leighton (27).

NY Islanders sign D Darius Kasparaitus (35) from Detroit for $6 million/1 year.

Florida signs D Adrian Aucoin (35) from New Jersey for $6.25 million/1 year.

Anaheim signs F Valeri Bure (34) from Los Angeles for $6.8 million/2 years.

NY Islanders sign F Miroslav Satan (33) from Buffalo for $5.5 million/1 year.

Colorado trades F Tyler Haskins (22) to Chicago for F Tuomo Ruuttu (25).

Los Angeles trades D Brad Festerling (22) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009 to Carolina for F Mika Halava (21).

San Jose signs D Sheldon Souray (31) from Calgary for $7.2 million/2 years.

2 Observations:

1. Pittsburgh traded for 3 young goalies at the trading deadline. Why!!!
2. The Penguins and Boston had identical records was the tie broken correctly?

The players they gave up were minor leaguers. Two of the goaltenders they got in return are in the AHL, one is in the ECHL. They have two other goaltenders competing for the back-up job but one of them will most likely be sent back to junior. Fleury is the unquestioned starter. More impressive is the unsigned prospects. Both Cummings and Novak look like stars. Pittsburgh is deep, deep, deep in goal.

I think the first tie-breaker is head-to-head. Unfortunately, the season already progressed to the next year and I can't find a way to view last year's schedule. When Boston plays Pittsburgh again, I'll be able to check.

St. Louis signs D Mattias Timander (34) from Edmonton for $8.3 million/2 years.

Detroit trades F Igor Grigorenko (25) to Colorado for the rights to F Oscar Lindmark (18) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009.

NY Rangers sign D Derian Hatcher (36) from Ottawa for $6 million/1 year.

Boston signs F Radek Bonk (32) from Ottawa for $8.7 million/2 years.

Toronto trades D Jean-Francois Brault (21) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009 to Edmonton for G Jeff-Drouin Deslauriers (24).

New Jersey signs D Andreas Liljs (33) from Minnesota for $6.4 million/2 years.

I make F Erik Cole (29) available due to financial reasons. He's making $3.1 million and is a restricted free agent at the end of the season if I give him a qualifying offer. His reputation is 'Superb' and he's a guy under other circumstances I'd like to keep around but I need to trim payroll and I have lots up depth on left wing. I tried to trade him to Philadelphia for their first round pick F Colton Gillies (19) but they weren't buying. Right now, Nashville is the only team interested.

Vancouver trades F Robert Drummond (22) to Chicago for the rights to F Alexander Bergstrom (22).

Los Angeles trades F Boyd Gordon (24) to Detroit for the rights to F Tyler Harrison (23) and a 4th Round Pick in 2009.

Erik Cole, David Tanabe and Paul Mara have made Team USA for the upcoming World Cup.

Marcus Nilson made Team Sweden.

Brendan Witt (33) - Eric Brewer (29)

J.S. Giguere (31)
Roberto Luongo (29)
Marty Turco (33)

Game 1: vs. USA
Luongo starts in goal. Healthy scratches are Friesen, Phaneuf, Brewer and Turco. I'm playing a high-tempo, heavy forecheckin, attacking game, rolling four lines. I'm name Chris Pronger as captain, and Thornton and Iginla as assistants.

10 seconds into the game, Heatley forces DiPietro into a terrific save. Lecavalier jumps on the rebound and backhands it into the empty net for a 1-0 lead. 1:41 later, the line of Bertuzzi-Thornton-Iginla leads to goal by Thornton to quickly make it 2-0. Brooks Orpik hits the post. Late in the period, Jamie Langenbrunner gets the US on the board. In the second, Dany Heatley scores a powerplay goal to regain a two goal lead. In the third, Heatley blows a slapshot by DiPietro to make it 4-1. Zach Parise answers on the powerplay to make it 4-2. With 2:19 left in the game, Legwand cuts the lead to one. Kobasew scores into the empty net. With DiPietro back in, St. Louis adds more insurance. Final Score: Canada 6 - USA 3. Game stats were even. Doan, Richards, Marleau and Luongo got '6' ratings.

* Vincent Lecavalier (1g, 3a, +3, 1ht, '10')
** Dany Heatley (2g, 2a, +3, '10')
*** Zach Parise (1g, 1a, -1, '8')

Game 2: vs. Slovakia
I let the assistants take over.

58 seconds in, Madden makes it 1-0. 1:20 later, Lecavalier makes it 2-0. 1:17 into the second, Madden gets his second for a three goal lead. In the third, Tanguay extends the lead. Iginla scores a powerplay goal. With 1:50 left in the game, Marian Hossa spoils Giguere's shutout bid. Final Score: Canada 5 - Slovakia 1. We outshot Slovakia 39-13 but were 1/10 on the powerplay. Marleau and Heatley got '6' ratings.

* John Madden (2g, +2, '8')
** Rick Nash (3a, +2, '9')
*** Vincent Lecavalier (1g, 1a, +2, 1ht, '8')

Game 3: vs. Russia
We win 3-1 even though being outshot 35-20.

* Roberto Luongo (34 saves, '9')
** Martin St. Louis (2a, +1, 2ht, '8')
*** Nathan Horton (1g, +1, 1ht, '8')

World Cup Quarter-Finals
Czech Republic 8 vs. Germany 2
Canada 4 vs. USA 1

* Dany Heatley (1g, 2a, +1, 3ht, '9')
** Jarome Iginla (2g, +2, '8')
*** Tim Gleason (1a, 1ht, '8')

Sweden 3 vs. Finland 4
Russia 4 vs. Slovakia 2

Czech Republic 5 vs. Finland 2
Canada 4 vs. Russia 2

* Martin St. Louis (2g, 1ht, '8')
** Joe Thornton (2a, +2, 1ht, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')

World Cup Finals
Czech Republic 4 vs. Canada 5

* Petr Cajanek (1g, 1a, +2, 1ht, '9')
** Petr Sykora (2g, +1, 1ht, '8')
*** John Madden (1g, -1, 1ht, '8')

Exhibition Game 1: @ San Jose
Buhrer starts. A lot of kids are up because of the internationals. I was experimenting with tactics and we lose 4-0.

Exhibition Game 2: vs. Philadelphia
Buhrer starts. We win 6-0. Jacobs gets a hattrick.

St. Louis signs D Mattias Norstrom (36) from Tampa Bay for $4.2 million/1 year.

Tampa Bay's F Ben Clymer (30) will be out 7 months with a torn ACL.

Exhibition Game 3: @ Colorado
Kiprusoff starts. We win 5-4, including scoring 3 powerplay goals.

Exhibition Game 4: vs. NY Rangers
Buhrer starts. We win 5-3. Buhrer will be out for a few days with a twisted knee.

Exhibition Game 5: @ Anaheim
Kiprusoff starts. We win 2-1 on a late goal by Jacobs. I'm confident in promoting Jacobs to the second line once I can unload Cole.

Exhibition Game 6: vs. Tampa Bay
Buhrer starts. We lose 4-1 trying to out offence Tampa.

Waiver Draft
Carolina selects D Lukas Krajicek (26) from Phoenix.
Nashville selects D Ondrej Stanek (24) from Tampa Bay.
Los Angeles selects D Matthew Carle (24) from Vancouver.
Phoenix selects F Zbynek Novak (25) from Washington.
Buffalo selects D Simon Skoog (25) from Pittsburgh.
Toronto selects F Andreas Sundin (24) from Detroit.
San Jose selects G Jimmy Howard (24) from Edmonton.
Boston selects F Shawn Horcoff (30) from NY Islanders.
Toronto selects D John Jakopin (30) from NY Rangers.
Tampa Bay selects D Artem Ternavsky (25) from Boston.

Florida signs F Mark Parrish (31) from NY Islanders for $8.3 million/2 years.

Game 1: vs. Edmonton
Buhrer starts. I decide to use my own tactics and play a few games out in full. The strategy is to play an up-tempo offensive game at home and a bore you to death trap on the road. The roster:

Ivo Ruthemann (31) - Brad Richards (28) - Jarome Iginla (31)
Erik Cole (29) - John Madden (33) - Chuck Kobasew (26)
Jens Jacobs (23) - Niklas Persson (29) - Jan Kolar (27)
Kris Chucko (22) - Matthew Myers (23) - Lars Erik Spets (23)
Marcus Nilson (30) - Stephen Peat (28)

Dion Phaneuf (23) - David Tanabe (28)
Paul Mara (29) - Rhett Warrener (32)
Barret Jackman (27) - Grant Lewis (23)
Chris Zarb (23)

Marco Buhrer (29)
Miikka Kiprusoff (31)

With an early powerplay chance, it looks like Persson has an easy goal but Michael Leighton robs him to keep the game scoreless after one period. We outshot Edmonton 8-3. Early in the second, Kobasew springs Madden who beats Leighton with a wristshot to make it 1-0. Phaneuf then levels Fredrik Johansson with a bodycheck. Johansson retaliates with a slash and on the resultant powerplay Iginla makes it 2-0. Jackman and Laraque renew aquaintances and drop the gloves. Rita goes back to retrieve the puck, Ruthemann strips the puck off of him, feeds Phaneuf for a point shot and Iginla deflects it in for his second of the game and a 3-0 lead. Iginla feeds Richards who then springs Ruthemann on a breakaway. Ruthemann goes to the backhand and makes it 4-0. Laraque muscles Mara off the puck and then flips a wristshot past Buhrer to get Edmonton on the board with 1:13 left in the second period. We outshot Edmonton 15-7 in the second. Early in the third, Kobasew is stopped on a breakaway. Edmonton's captain, Trevor Byrne, hits the post. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Edmonton 1. We outshoot Edmonton 33-17, outhit them 28-12 but have 29 giveaways. Jacobs was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 2a, +1, '10')
** Jarome Iginla (2g, 1a, +1, 3ht, '10')
*** John Madden (1g, 2ht, '8')

What are Chucko's career WHL and NHL stats? I just entered the 2nd year in my Blazers dynasty and he's lighting the WHL on fire.

And did Grant Jacobsen and Jarret Lukin ever crack the NHL?

F Kris Chucko (22)

WHL
167gp, 83g, 94a, 177pts, +53, 305pim, 7.36AvR

AHL
60gp, 19g, 45a, 64pts, +45, 139pim, 7.45AvR

NHL
67gp, 9g, 6a, 15pts, -5, 39pim, 6.91AvR

He played one season as a 20 year old in the AHL. He was 21 in his rookie season last year. I see him as a third line winger or a second line winger on a weak team.

Quote:

F Grant Jacobsen (25)
After junior, he's played five years in the SM-Liga for Turun Palloseura.

SM-Liga
186gp, 36g, 46a, 82pts, +14, 128pim, 6.94AvR

F Jarret Lukin (24)
I signed Lukin when he went undrafted. He played a couple years for me in the ECHL before catching on with Montreal's ECHL affiliate.

ECHL
106gp, 20g, 22a, 42pts, +1, 80pim, 6.97AvR

Neither player looks to be NHL material unless a team runs into major injuries and they're in the right place at the right time.

Game 2: vs. Vancouver
I'm in trouble with my goaltending. Buhrer is at 81%. Kiprusoff is at 33%. Krahn is at 6%. I made the mistake of intensifying conditioning as part of their practice regime in hopes that their stamina would increase. Buhrer starts this game. No changes to the lineup. Morrison opens the scoring less than three minutes into the game. With 1:02 left in the period, Kariya makes it 2-0. 12-9 shots on goal in the first favouring Vancouver. Morrison is stopped on a breakaway early in the second, but jumps on his own rebound to make it 3-0. Buhrer stops Henrik Sedin on a breakaway. We are outshot 13-9 in the second. With under five minutes left in the game, St. Louis finds the net. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 0. We were outshot 36-20. Spets, Jacobs, Ruthemann, Jackman and Mara get '6' ratings.

* Brendan Morrison (2g, 1a, +3, 1ht, '9')
** Mattias Ohlund (1g, +1, 1ht, '9')
*** Martin St. Louis (1g, 1a, +3, '8')

Game 3: @ Nashville
Buhrer starts. No change to the lineup. I'm experimenting with tactics and trying to create a suffocating neutral zone trap - a very passive, counter-attacking strategy. Jackmand and Kessel open the game with a fight. Vokoun stops Ruthemann and Cole on back-to-back breakaways. No scoring in the first. We outshoot Nashville 12-10. Ex-Oiler Ryan Smyth hits the post halfway through the second. No scoring in the second. We outshot Nashville 6-1 in the second. Looks like the trap is working. In the third, Kessel hits the post. Richards scores a short-handed goal to open the scoring. Ruthemann then scores a powerplay goal into the empty net. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Nashville 0. We outshot Nashville 27-18 and minimized the giveaways. Spets and Chucko got '6' ratings.

* Brad Richards (2g, +1, 1ht, '9')
** Tomas Vokoun (25 saves, '8')
*** Marco Buhrer (18 saves, '8')

Robert Lang (Cbs) is Offensive Player of the Week.
Steve Eminger (Wsh) is Defensive Player of the Week.

Robyn Regehr (Pho) will be out for six months after surgery to cure a pulled hamstring. This is exactly what my physios had warned me about and the main reason I traded him.

Game 4: @ Chicago
Buhrer starts. Nilson in for Spets. Buhrer stops Arnason on a breakaway. A Mara's cross-ice pass is intercepted by Frolov and it's 1-0 Chicago. A nice passing play sets up Ovechkin in the slot for a 2-0 lead after the first. In the second, Steve Ott hits the post on the powerplay. Jackmand drops the gloves with Mattias Wennerberg winning the fight. Chucko hits the post. No scoring in a penalty-filled second period. Mapletoft scores for Chicago in the third. Loui Eriksson scores a powerplay goal and then so does Steve Ott. Kobasew scores to break Thibault's shutout. Jacobs adds one on a breakaway. Thibault stops Kobasew on a breakaway. Final Score: Chicago 5 - Calgary 2. 36 minutes in penalties. Persson got a '6' rating, Buhrer got a '4'. He gets a warning as a result but thinks my warning was unfair.

* Dmitri Frolov (1g, 3a, +2, '10')
** Steve Ott (1g, 1a, -1, '8')
*** Chuck Kobasew (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')

Game 5: @ Colorado
Buhrer starts despite being unhappy. No change to the lineup. I've decide to try the "Lightning" Tactic from the SI boards. Viukhola hits the post for Colorado. Ruthemann scores on the powerplay for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Mara scores a powerplay goal for a 2-0 lead. Kim Jonsson hits the post. 24 seconds into the third, Tanabe scores a powerplay goal to make it 3-0. Ortmeyer breaks Buhrer's shutout. Deadmarsh tips a Jonsson slapshot to make it 3-2. Iginla answers to regain a two goal lead. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Colorado 2. We were 3/6 on the powerplay while killing off six penalties. No one had a '6' rating as the fourth line never saw the ice.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
** Jarome Iginla (1g, 3a, -1, 1ht, '8')
*** Paul Mara (1g, 1a, 1ht, '8')

Game 6: vs. Ottawa
Buhrer starts. Zarb in for Phaneuf (75%). Tanabe is also at 75% but he'll only see powerplay time. Spets in for Cole (75%). I tweak the Lightning tactic to favour skating over passing as the offensive system. I also want to get the fourth line at least around 5 minutes of ice time so I switch to Overload. With a 4-on-3 man-advantage, Devan Dubnyk stones Kobasew on a breakaway. Jackman drops the gloves with Chris Neil but loses the fight badly. Iginla opens the scoring. Zarb gets an assist for his first career point. Buhrer stops Stewart Gibson on a breakaway. In the second, Richards schools Volchenkov and beats Dubnyk with a wristshot to make it 2-0. Tanabe hits the post on the powerplay. After several good chances by Jacobs and Kobasew, a Havlat slapshot finds the mark to cut the lead to one. In the third, Nilson is stopped on a breakaway. With Dubnyk out, Jacobs scores into the empty net. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Ottawa 1. We outshot Ottawa 25-14. Myers, Spets and Nilson got '6' ratings.

I make Spets and Peat available. I've seen enough from Spets to know he's just a depth player. He doesn't have much consistency and struggles in the playoffs.

Brian Gionta (NJ) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Derian Hatcher (NYR) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Vancouver trades D Denis Grot (24) to Phoenix for F Marcus Jonasen (24).

Pittsburgh trades F Aki Seitsonen (22) to Detroit for F Corey Locke (24).

Game 7: vs. Detroit
Buhrer starts. Phaneuf in for Zarb. Cole in for Spets. Trnka hits the post. Ruthemann springs Richards on a breakaway who beats 18-year 1st Round Draft pick old Ben Kielt to make it 1-0. We outshoot Detroit 9-2 in the first. The third and fourth line got one shift each. In the second, Buhrer stops Whitney on a breakaway. Kielt stones Iginla in close and follows up by stopping Iginla on his own rebound. Persson goes end-to-end for the second time in the game but this time he puts it in the net for his first career NHL goal. 2-0. Iginla is getting stoned by Kielt after three shots in a row in Detroit's zone. In the third, Jacobs drops the gloves with Landon Wilson. Keilt stone Ruthemann in tight. Kobasew dekes Kielt who can't stop this one. Kobasew then sets up Cole in the slot but Kielt comes up with yet another amazing acrobatic save. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Detroit 0. We outshoot Detroit 28-15.

* Brad Richards (1g, 1a, +2, '8')
** Chuck Kobasew (1g, +1, 2ht, '8')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (2a, +2, '8')

Philadelphia trades D Nolan Pratt (33) and a 2nd Round Pick in 2009 to Boston for D Garnet Exelby (27).

Game 8: vs. San Jose
I demote F Kris Chucko (22) and promote F Jerry Pollastrone (23). Pollastrone may not be as skilled as Chucko but is better suited for a fourth line role. Kiprusoff starts. Pollastrone in for Chucko. Peat in for Nilson. Warrener of all people goes deep forechecking and manages to strip McLaren off the puck, feeds Iginla, and it's 1-0. Cheechoo ties it up for San Jose. With 2:18 left in the period, a Mara slapshot is tipped by Myers for a 2-1 lead. In the third, Pollastrone drops the gloves with San Jose's first round pick, 18 year old, Dylan Dickson. It wasn't the smartest move by Dickson. With 4:35 left in the game, Sturm scores on a breakaway to tie the game. We dominate overtime but can't solve Niittymaki. Final Score: San Jose 2 - Calgary 2. Game stats were even. No one got a '6' rating. Cole suffers a dislocated shoulder and will be out for two months. Last year he was out for three months.

* Marco Sturm (1g, 1a, +1, 1ht, '8')
** Rhett Warrener (2a, +2, 5ht, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, +1, 4ht, '8')

I recall F Fredrik Naslund (23) from the AHL.

Jeff Walker (Nsh) wins Offensive Player of the Week - 1st Overall Selection the past draft; out for three months
Ed Jovanovski (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Week

Game 9: vs. Nashville
Buhrer starts. Naslund in for Cole. Mara opens the scoring on the powerplay. 23 seconds later, Jacobs scores a powerplay goal to make it 2-0. Naslund gets his first career goal in his first career game to make it 3-0. With 2:04 left in the first, Ryan Smyth scores on the powerplay to get Nashville on the board. We outshoot Nashville, 16-5 in the first. We kill off a penalty in the second and then Iginla regains a three goal lead. Iginla, Richards and Ruthemann then team up on another Iginla goal. Ruthemann gets a powerplay goal and this chases Vokoun in favour of Tyler Weiman. Immediately, Kolar gets a breakaway but is stopped by Weiman. We outshoot Nashville, 10-1 in the second. 22 seconds into the third, Kolar gets in on the action. Ruthemann gets another. Naslund gets his second of the game. Kozlov gets a goal late in the game. Then Lashoff hits the post and Malkin jumps on the rebound for Nashville's third goal of the game and his first career goal. Final Score: Calgary 9 - Nashville 3. We outshoot Nashville 35-13. Myers gets a '6' rating.

* Jarome Iginla (2g, 3a, +2, 1ht, '10')
** Paul Mara (1g, 3a, +1, '10')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (2g, 2a, +2, 1ht, '10')

Game 10: @ Phoenix
I don't play this game out in full but am still using a slightly modified Lightning tactic. Kiprusoff starts. Zarb in for Mara (75%). No change up front. Naslund hits the post. Richards scores a powerplay goal to open the scoring. In the last second of the first period, Monych hits the post. 1:27 into the second, Ruthemann makes it 2-0. Jacobs springs Persson on a breakaway and it's 3-0. Hromas gets Phoenix on the board but Madden answers 1:04 later. In the third, Madden hits the post and Kobasew jumps on the rebound to make it 5-1. Ruthemann adds one more on the backhand. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Phoenix 1. We outshoot the Coyotes, 39-28. Kolar and Pollastrone get '6' ratings.

* Ivo Ruthemann (2g, 1a, +2, '10')
** John Madden (1g, 1a, +1, 2ht, '8')
*** Miikka Kiprusoff (27 saves, '8')

Game 11: @ San Jose
Back-to-back games so Buhrer starts. Although Mara is at 80%, Zarb had two assists last game and I'm going to try and not play anyone unless they're at 90%. Nilson in for Kolar as I have made a trade offer involving Kolar for Ottawa's Mike Fisher, and don't want him getting injured now. Persson opens the scoring on the powerplay. Kobasew then follows his own rebound to make it 2-0. Sturm cuts the lead to one. In the second, Kobasew sets up Richards in the slot for a 3-1 lead. Naslund gets a 5 minute major and game-misconduct for cross-checking but San Jose can't capitalize on the powerplay. In the third, Iginla scores with a feed from Richards with his 500th career point. Michalek hits the post. Final Score: Calgary 4 - San Jose 1. We outshoot San Jose 32-23. Nilson, Jacobs, Pollastrone and Ruthemann get '6' ratings.

* Chuck Kobasew (1g, 1a, +2, 1ht, '8')
** Marco Buhrer (22 saves, '8')
*** Niklas Persson (1g, '8')

Ottawa tries to negotiate the trade and wants one of my young goalie prospects which is completely unacceptable.

Dany Heatley (Atl) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Ed Jovanovski (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Andy Sutton (Car) wins Rookie of the Month.

F Fredrik Naslund (22) has been suspended for 3 games following his game misconduct.

Game 12: vs. Chicago
Kiprusoff starts. Mara in for Zarb. Kolar in for Nilson. Spets in for Naslund. I decide to use "Just Three" after a poor performance by the fourth line last game. With 1:05 left in the first, Iginla scores a powerplay goal. In the second, Ovechkin answers on the powerplay. 13 seconds later, Kobasew regains the one goal lead. Iginla then scores on the breakaway. With 1:24 left in the period, Ruthemann scores on the powerplay. In the third, Tallinder hit the post but there's no scoring. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Chicago 1. Myers and Pollastrone get '6' ratings but seeing as they were only on for two shifts, that's not surprising. They didn't hurt us and that's all I want from the fourth line.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 2a, +1, 1ht, '10')
** Jarome Iginla (2a, 1a, +1, 2ht, '10')
*** Chuck Kobasew (1g, +1, '8')

Dany Heatley (Atl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Paul Mara (Cgy) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Chicago trades the rights to F Dustin Bendera (18) and a 2nd Round Pick in 2009 to Buffalo for G Alexander Auld (27).

Game 13: @ Columbus
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. 2:41 into the game, Spets gets his first of the year. Ruthemann makes it 2-0 on a breakaway. In the second, Jackman drops the gloves with Sergei Anshakov. Welcome to the NHL. No scoring in the second. In the third, Spets gets his second of the game. Madden scores late. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Columbus 0. We held Columbus to 15 shots on goal. Spets is removed from the trading block. He's a cheap, depth player with skill. He isn't a regular but can be effectively inserted into the lineup when needed as this game proved. Myers and Pollastrone got '6' ratings with only around two minutes of ice-time. That's fine by me.

* Lars Erik Spets (2g, +2, '8')
** Niklas Persson (2a, +2, 1ht, '8')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, +1, '8')

Game 14: @ Detroit
Buhrer starts in this back-to-back game. Nilson in for Pollastrone. Oleg Minkhov opens the scoring for Detroit. Former Flame, Jonas Frogren hits the post. 1:02 into the second, Spets ties the game. 17 seconds later, Ruthemann takes the lead. Jacobs then makes it 3-1. Jens Jacobs then drops the gloves with Landon Wilson and absolutely destroys him. In the third, Iginla scores on the powerplay. Daniel Ryder answers for Detroit. Kobasew adds one more. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Detroit 2.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, -1, 1ht, '8')
** Jens Jacobs (1g, 1a, +2, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, 1a, 5ht, '8')

Game 15: vs. Colorado
Kiprusoff starts. Naslund in for Nilson. Spets drops to the fourth line. Jacobs scores a powerplay goal to open the scoring. Kolar makes it 2-0. With 2:05 left in the period, Vyborny gets Colorado to within one. In the second, Timmonen hit the post. Kolar then hits the post but Naslund jumps on the rebound for a two goal lead. Madden scores. Jacobs gets his second of the game. 23 seconds in the third, Forsberg scores. Kobasew answers on the powerplay with an assist from Phaneuf for his 100th career point. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Colorado 2. Our fourth line of Spets-Myers-Peat sees 30 seconds of ice time.

* Dion Phaneuf (3a, +2, 2ht, '10')
** Jens Jacobs (2g, 1a, '9')
*** Jan Kolar (1g, 1a, +2, 2ht, '8')

I recall D Louis-Phillippe Lachance (22).

Game 24: Calgary 3 @ Edmonton 4 (*Jan Kolar, **Jani Rita, ***John Madden)

Toronto have signed UFA F Keith Tkachuk (36) for $5.75 million.

My 2nd round pick, D Grant Lewis (23), is not becoming the player he appeared to be on draft day. He has all the attributes but for whatever reason, he's a giveaway machine, and for his skill, doesn't contribute much offensively. Meanwhile, my 7th round pick, D Chris Zarb (23), has more points in 19 fewer games, despite worse attributes. My coaches state that Lewis doesn't deserve his spot on the team while they feel Zarb could be a class act for years to come. Very interesting.

Eric Belanger (Ott) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Ed Jovanovski (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Artem Ternavsky (TB) wins Rookie of the Month.

Marian Hossa (Ott) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Chris Phillips (Ott) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 30: Calgary 2 @ Columbus 0 (*Jarome Iginla, **Marco Buhrer, ***Chuck Kobasew)

F Erik Cole (29) and D Dion Phaneuf (23) have resumed practice. Immediately, the New York Rangers make a trade offer for Cole but offer nothing more than a minor league defenceman. Instead of countering, as I want to put Cole back in the lineup for a while, I reject the offer out of hand.

Game 31: Calgary 7 @ Los Angeles 1 (*Ivo Ruthemann, **Paul Mara, ***Chuck Kobasew)

Los Angeles trades F Linus Bladstrom (23) to Boston for D Nicolaus Knudsen (21) and a 4th Round Pick in 2009.

D Rhett Warrener (32) resume practice. I send D Andy Rogers (22), who has outplayed D Grant Lewis (23), back to Lowell. Lewis would have to clear waivers so he remains as our seventh defenceman.

Boston trades the rights to F Sergei Osipov (18) to the New York Rangers for D Tom Poti (31).

Game 32: Calgary 8 @ Vancouver 5 (*John Madden, **Fredrik Naslund, ***Niklas Persson)

The team gets six consecutive shutouts on its way to the gold medal. Nice to see Flames draft picks Burt and Skinner come up big in the gold medal game. This is a back-to-back championship under my direction.

I send F Kris Chucko (22) back to Lowell of the AHL.

Game 34: Vancouver 5 @ Calgary 1 (*Henrik Sedin, **Martin St. Louis, ***Paul Kariya)

D Rhett Warrener (32) is a pending UFA. He's unhappy and wants to sign a new deal. He wants $9 million/3 years and I offer $8.4/3 years. He accepts.

Vancouver trades F David Bolland (22) to Columbus for D Tomas Slovak (26).

Game 35: Calgary 6 @ Minnesota 2 (*John Madden, **Erik Cole, ***Jan Kolar)

Dalla's, F Jakub Sindel (22) will be out for 4 months with a separated shoulder.

Alexander Ovechkin (Chi) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Kari Lehtonen (Atl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 36: Calgary 7 @ St. Louis 0 (*Erik Cole, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Miikka Kiprusoff)
For this game, I decided to use a "Normal" system instead of "Overload" or "Just Three". I was tired of seeing my fourth line with 30 seconds of ice time and my third line with 5-8 minutes of ice-time. The result certainly worked and is the first time I have ever had everyone get an '8' rating. Myers had two goals and both Spets and Nilson had an assist. D Barret Jackman (27) will be out 10 days with a neck strain. I recall D Andy Rogers (22).

Minnesota trades the rights to G Brian Foster (21) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009 to Florida for G Sergei Borisov (23).

Game 39: Anaheim 4 @ Calgary 2 (*Stanislav Chistov, **Ivo Ruthemann, ***Ryan Getzlaf)
F Fredrik Naslund (22) gets a '5' rating for a -4 performance. I give him an official warning and he accepts it and apologizes.

Dany Heatley (Atl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Scott Niedermayer (Mtl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 40: Calgary 3 @ Phoenix 1 (*Ivo Ruthemann, **Jarome Iginla, ***Miikka Kiprusoff)
D Paul Mara (29) will be out for a few days with anterior knee pain.

Game 41: Calgary 5 @ Dallas 2 (*Ivo Ruthemann, **Eric Daze, ***Chuck Kobasew)

At the 41 game mark we are first overall with 66 points, four points ahead of Vancouver who has a game in hand. Iginla is second in league scoring while Ruthemann is third. Heatley leads the way. I still have been unable to unload Cole. Of my three young defencemen, Rogers looks like the best of the bunch and may be ready to replace Jackman's role on the team. However, I won't be trading Jackman before the off-season. I just can't afford $4 million fifth and sixth defencemen.

Very interesting indeed...The one hold back I had on this game was what I was hearing about the draft. Not many late round surprises, lack of 1st round busts, etc....What have you seen or what is your impression of this?

This and MikeVick7 FM dynasty are great reads. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind word guys. It's nice to hear that this isn't in vain. Now time for some updates...

Detroit Red Wings

Detroit currently sits 13th in the Western Conference, 10 points out of a playoff spot. The core has radically changed since the team's glory days.

GM: David Poile
Head Coach: Rob Cookson

Roster:
Henrik Zetterberg (28) - Michael Peca (34) - Landon Wilson (33)
Ray Whitney (36) - Zach Hamill (20) - Scott Walker (35)
Kirk Maltby (36) - R.J. Umberger (26) - Bobby Ryan (21)
Alexei Mikhnov (26) - Daniel Ryder (21) - Carter Camper (20)
Marcel Hossa (27) - Jari Tolsa (28)

Pavel Trnka (32) - Mathieu Dandenault (32)
Jonas Frogren (29) - Martin Gadjos (22)
Brian Campbell (29) - Julian Marcuzzi (21)
Boris Valabik (22)

Olaf Kolzig (38)
Manny Legace (35)
Ben Kielt (19)

Detroit hasn't spent the really big money going after marquee free agents such as Bertuzzi or Niedermayer but have foolishly dumped $5 million on a guy like Landon Wilson. They have also had a spotty drafting record, especially up front. On the back end however, Gadjos (7th Round - 188th overall, 2005), Marcuzzi (4th Round - 100th overall, 2005), and Valabik (3rd Round - 85 overall, 2004), all look to be solid contributors, with Gadjos being the best of the bunch. The real star in the making, however, is G Ben Kielt, the sixth overall selection in 2008. He already is doing well in spot duty and should anchor Detroit's goaltending for the next decade.

St. Louis Blues

St. Louis currently sits in 9th place in the Western Conference, tied in points with Nashville for the final playoff spot but having played two more games.

GM: Larry Pleau
Head Coach: Joel Quenneville

Roster:
Brian Rolston (35) - Pavel Datsyuk (30) - Drew Stafford (23)
Steve Reinprecht (32) - Kyle Chipchura (22) - Ales Kotalik (30)
Raffi Torres (27) - Riku Hahl (28) - Mark Bell (28)
Guillaume Latendresse (21) - Niko Kapanen (30) - Alexei Shkotov (24)
Mark Rycroft (30) - Mike Ricci (37) - Peter Schastlivy (31)

Sergei Gonchar (34) - Brian Rafalski (35)
Mattias Timander (34) - Mattias Norstrom (36)
Bryan Berard (31) - Adam Foote (37)
Christian Backman (28)

Nikolai Khabibulin (35)
Milan Hnilicka (35)

Pleau has spent free agent money on defence ever since the departure of Chris Pronger to Vancouver. It's an aging but solid defence backed by a reliable goaltender in Khabibulin but you'd like to see St. Louis develop some younger players in these positions. Up front, however, the Blues have developed two great forwards in Stafford (2nd Round - 43rd overall, 2004) and Chipchura (1st Round - 13th overall, 2004) with Latendresse (1st Round - 24th overall, 2005) not far behind. Solid mid-level free agent aquisitions like Reinprecht, great trades such as the one for Datsyuk, good drafting and deep resources should make St. Louis a contender sooner rather than later.

Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton currently sits in 12th place in the Western Conference, 9 points out of a playoff spot.

GM: Darryl Sutter
Head Coach: John Tortorella

Roster:
Petr Cajanek (33) - Mike York (31) - Ales Hemsky (25)
Scott Barney (26) - Marc-Antoine Pouliot (23) - Jani Rita (27)
Dane Byers (22) - Marty Reasoner (31) - Martin Lapointe (35)
Petr Pohl (22) - Jiri Hudler (25) - Georges Laraque (32)
Robbie Schremp (22) - Bryan Little (21)

Eric Brewer (29) - Emil Axelsson (22)
Risto Korhonen (22) - Doug Lynch (26)
Shawn Belle (24) - Trevor Byrne (26)
Ty Wishart (20)

Michael Leighton (27)
Cam Ward (24)

It's sad to see how a once proud franchise can be decimated by a miniscule budget. A constant rotation of players due to finances makes it hard to develop any sort of chemistry and continuity. It also forces the team to not make any mistakes in drafting as well as leaving them no choice but to rush younger players. The constant goal is to qualify for the playoffs where they hopefully can generate some much needed revenue.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto currently sits last in the Eastern Conference but only 5 points out of a playoff spot.

GM: John Ferguson Jr.
Head Coach: Michel Knight

Roster:
Markus Naslund (35) - Nik Antropov (28) - Mattias Weinhandl (28)
Keith Tkachuk (36) - Alexander Steen (24) - Matthew Barnaby (35)
Kyle Calder (30) - Andrew Cogliano (21) - Jason Williams (28)
Harold Druken (29) - Andreas Sundin (24) - Patrick Sharp (27)
Jeremy Williams (24)

Colin White (31) - John Jakopin (30)
Tomas Kaberle (30) - Martin Grenier (28)
Aki Berg (31) - Brian Pothier (31)
Jay Harrison (26)

Brent Johnson (31)
Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (24)
Scott Clemmensen (31)

With a gigantic budget, Toronto has never been one to develop its own talent. At 21, Cogliano is already a reclamation project after having been rushed into the NHL as an 18 year old by San Jose. Toronto has made a couple of good trades, getting Calder out of Chicago and rescuing Clemmensen from Albany. Clemmensen has performed admirably for Toronto but they haven't shown any commitment to him or any goaltender for that matter since the departure of Belfour. The same can be said for the defence, where Ferguson Jr. continues to rest on White, Kaberle and Berg, a mediocre crew to say the least. And with Knight as head coach at only 39 years of age, you wonder how long the experiment will last.

This and MikeVick7 FM dynasty are great reads. Thanks.

There are indeed late round surprises. Zarb, Rogers and Jacobs, not to mention undrafted Lachance on my farm team, all look like solid contributors. They won't be stars (Rogers has an outside shot) but you can definitely find gems in the later rounds.

There are also first round busts as I've seen plenty of AI teams pick guys who haven't developed. I'm also starting to worry about a couple of my first round picks in Chucko and Gardner. Chucko looks to be at best a third or fourth line player. Both him and Gardner, while producing at the AHL level, haven't seen much improvement in their attributes. In fact, Chucko's skill level has declined.

The only concern is with the very top end of the draft with regenerated players. If you can get into the top five of the draft, you're almost certain to get a stud who can step into the NHL as an 18 year old. Having never drafted higher than 23rd, it's not a problem I've faced.

I think that's how it was when the game was released. But after a few patches it seems to work a lot better now.

Looks like its time to fire this one up again..Wait , that means I have to take time away from my FM career. Whats a white boy to do??

Thanks for the replies guys!

F Brad Richards (28) has returned after his separated shoulder and will replace Myers.

Game 44: Carolina 1 @ Calgary 3 (*Andy Rogers, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Ivo Ruthemann)

Calgary trades D Louis-Phillipe Lachance (22) to Buffalo for the rights to D Mikael Svensk (25). Lachance was an undrafted player that I liked and he's developed nicely in the minors. He has a chance at being a sixth or seventh defenceman. However, Svensk is NHL-ready and has top four attributes.

Calgary trades the rights to F Paul Kirkham (20) to Montreal for a 4th Round Pick in 2010. I was trying to unload F Marcus Nilson (30) and Montreal came with a counter-offer for Kirham, a Brit, who I drafted in the 8th Round Pick in 2007. I didn't want a pick in this year's draft as it's not very deep. I'm more than willing to unload Kirkham who I don't think will ever be NHL material. So essentially I turn an eight round pick into a fourth round pick.

Calgary signs D Barret Jackman (27) to a two-year contract extension worth $$7.8 million. This was his minimal qualifying offer.

Calgary signs D Dion Phaneuf (23) to a three-year deal worth $10.5 million. This was about $2 million less than he was looking for.

Calgary re-signs F Kris Chucko (22) for $700,000/2 years.

Calgary signs F David Laliberte (22) to a one-year contract extension worth $350,000. He looks to be the perfect replacement for Nilson if I could ever unload his salary.

D Rhett Warrener (32) will be out for 2 weeks after suffering a hip flexor in practice.

Game 45: Calgary 4 @ San Jose 1 (*Jarome Iginla, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Marco Buhrer)

F Brad Richards (28) signs a three-year contract extension worth $12 million.

D Andy Rogers (22) re-signs for $700,000/2 years.

D Chris Zarb (24) re-signs for one more year at $400,000 with a two-way clause.

D David Tanabe (28) re-signs for $8.2 million/2 years.

D Paul Mara (29) sign a one-year contract extension worth $3.9 million.

Calgary trades F Erik Cole (30) to Florida for a 1st Round Pick in 2009. I desperately unload his $3.1 million contract and get a first rounder in the top 15 which should hopefully translate into a good player. With a bigger player budget I'd keep him as he's a prototypical power forward with all-round skill. However, the combination of Jacobs/Naslund on the left side should make up for the offence I lose.

Ryan Getzlaf (Ana) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Radek Martinek (Mtl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Vancouver trades D Brad Wiseman (21) to Buffalo for F Dan Paille (24).

Game 46: Calgary 5 @ Anaheim 3 (*Jan Kolar, **Fredrik Naslund, ***Jarome Iginla)
Naslund, a player I coveted in the 2004 draft but missed out on, was drafted by Anaheim. His rights were traded a couple times and I managed to trade for him much to my delight. He's a top six forward although completely different than Cole. He's just as big, somewhat slower, not as aware defensively, but has much more flash and finish to his game. I suspect he'll be part of the team for a long time.

Ottawa trades the rights to D Esa Lehikoinen (22) to Carolina for F Peter Guggisberg (24).

Game 47: Dallas 0 @ Calgary 2 (*Marco Buhrer, **Jarome Iginla, ***Marty Turco)

I have signed D Mikael Svensk (25) from Djurgardens of the Swedish Elite League and F Jaroslav Markovic (23) from Dukla Trencin of the Slovakian Elite League. Both players will be (hopefully) playing regularly next year.

Game 48: Los Angeles 1 @ Calgary 2 (*Fredrik Naslund, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Brian Boyle)

Washington trades G Jose Theodore (32) to Buffalo for D Jordan Lynch (21). Theodore is making $8.25 million/year but his career has gone into the toilet since he left Montreal. His reputation dropped from 'Superb' to 'Good' over the past few years.

Game 49: Florida 2 @ Calgary 0 (*Mark Parrish, **Marco Buhrer, ***Roberto Luongo)

Brian Rolston (Stl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Roman Malek (Phi) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Ottawa trades the rights to F Peter Simpson (20) to Columbus for F Sergei Anshakov (25).

Djurgardens' F Mats Sundin (37) will be out for 8 months after suffering a torn ACL. He's retiring after this season.

Calgary trades F Michael Madsen (20) to Washington for a 4th Round Pick in 2010. I convert a 7th round pick into a 4th round pick. Danish center Madsen has a lot of flair and offence but little work ethic or determination. Much to my surprise, he immediately becomes Washington's third line center. I now can promote F Kris Chucko (22) and F David Laliberte (22), two guys I want to see excel. They take the place of F Lars Erik Spets (23) and F Matthew Myers (24).

Ottawa trades the rights to D Jaroslav Kokavec (22) and a 7th Round Pick in 2009 to Montreal for F Kamil Kreps (24).

Game 50: Columbus 3 @ Calgary 5 (*Nikolai Zherdev, **Matthew Myers, ***Jeff Taffe)

Calgary trades F Stephen Peat (28) to Colorado for a 7th Round Pick in 2010.

I have been trying to trade D Grant Lewis (24) but no one was accepting. He just turned 24 and his technical attributes all went up. He just looks too good to not be playing better than he is. I demote D Chris Zarb (24) to Lowell and give Lewis his umpteenth chance at proving me wrong. I platoon him with D Andy Rogers (22).

Game 51: St. Louis 2 @ Calgary 3 (*Jarome Iginla, **Fredrik Naslund, ***Jan Kolar)

Joel Lundqvist (Min) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Tomas Kloucek (Atl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 52: Calgary 6 @ Detroit 0 (*Jarome Iginla, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Jan Kolar)
F Jen Jacobs (23) will be out for 2 weeks with an eye injury.

Calgary trades F Marius Andersen (24) to Chicago for a 4th Round Pick in 2010.

Game 53: Calgary 5 @ Tampa Bay 3 (*Jarome Iginla, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Ivo Ruthemann)

Martin Havlat (Ott) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Craig Anderson (Col) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Michal Ivicic (Pho) wins Rookie of the Month.

I recall F Jordan McLean (22) from the AHL.

Game 54: Calgary 5 @ NY Islanders 3 (*Ivo Ruthemann, **Oleg Kvasha, ***Jarome Iginla)

Los Angeles trades F Jeff Tambellini (24) to Chicago for F Jonathan Filewich (24).

Game 55: Calgary 3 @ Pittsburgh 1 (*Dion Phaneuf, **Daniel Carcillo, ***Jarome Iginla)

Jarome Iginla (Cgy) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Tom Poti (NYR) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

At the 55 game mark, we're in first place with 88 points, 8 ahead of Vancouver. Iginla leads the NHL in scoring with 79 points, 5 ahead of Heatley. Ruthemann is third with 69. Fredrik Naslund is second in rookie scoring with 30 points in 44 games and leads with 16 goals. Andy Sutton (Car) leads all rookies with 32 points in 55 games. With the trades, I've managed to trim the payroll back to the allotted $47.5 million.

East 4 vs. West 3 - Patrik Elias wins the MVP.

Los Angeles trades D Colin Joe (20), the rights to F Andrei Sokolov (20), a 3rd Round Pick in 2010 and a 4th Round Pick in 2009 originally from Boston to Carolina for F Radim Vrbata (27).

"Eric Cole is perceived to be handling his career at Florida so badly that the American media are speculating about potential replacements already!" Since the trade, he has two goals and zero assists in 13 games to go with a -7 and a 7.23AvR. Yet, Florida has signed him to a two-year contract extension worth $8.7 million. I'm glad I traded him.

Game 57: Edmonton 0 @ Calgary 5 (*Miikka Kiprusoff, **John Madden, ***Niklas Persson)

Saku Koivu (Mtl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Lubomir Visnovsky (Ott) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 58: Washington 4 @ Calgary 2 (*Alexander Semin, **Shaone Morrison, ***Mike Johnson)

Tampa Bay trades the rights to F Daniel Pietta (22), a 4th Round Pick in 2009 and a 4th Round Pick in 2010 to St. Louis for F Alexei Shkotov (24) and a 4th Round Pick in 2009.

Boston trades F Denis Shvidki (28) to Atlanta for the rights to G Mike Jackson (19) and a 4th Round Pick in 2009.

F Jordan McLean (22), my 5th Round Pick in 2005, is outplaying F Kris Chucko (22), my 1st Round Pick in 2004. I remember my scouts did not like McLean but because of his all-round attributes, I drafted him and stuck him in the minors. McLean never played major-junior either, and played four years with the Sicamous Eagles of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Not bad at all but I'm worried about Chucko who has seen his technical attributes decline in the past year and who has failed to make any significant impact with his opportunity.

Game 59: Dallas 0 @ Calgary 3 (*Jan Kolar, **Jarome Iginla, ***Marco Buhrer)
Kolar scored all three goals. We held Dallas to only 10 shots.

St. Louis' F Steve Reinprecht (32) will be out for 4 months after suffering a separated shoulder.

Buffalo trades the rights to G Fredrik Alcen (22), a 2nd Round Pick in 2009 and a 2nd Round Pick in 2010 to Anaheim for G Ilya Bryzgalov (28).

Los Angeles trades D Greg DeVries (36) to Boston for the rights to F Sergei Osipov (19).

"An American local newspaper report doubts Erik Cole has a realistic claim for a place on the Florida team."

Game 60: Calgary 6 @ Minnesota 2 (*Jordan McLean, **Fredrik Naslund, ***John Madden)
G Miikka Kiprusoff (32) will be out for a few days with a cut hand.

I place F Lars Erik Spets (23) on waivers. I have been unable to trade him, even for a 9th Round Pick. 12 teams are interested because he has a tiny salary and great attributes. I'm sure he can contribute with more ice-time but he's disappeared in the playoffs two years in a row. The Norwegian experiment is over.

Carolina trades G Jamie Storr (33) to Boston for D Mike Kennedy (20) and a 1st Round Pick in 2009.

Rob Niedermayer (Buf) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Jimmy Howard (SJ) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 61: Calgary 2 @ Colorado 3 (*Daniel Alfredsson, **Pavol Demitra, ***Jed Ortmeyer)
F Kris Chucko (22) will be out a few days with anterior knee pain.

Columbus has claimed F Lars Erik Spets (23) from waivers.

Los Angeles trades G Martin Biron (31) and a 1st Round Pick in 2009 to Buffalo for F Patrik Bartschi (24) and the rights to D Mike Richards (19). Buffalo now has four goaltenders on its roster, none of whom are injured - Bryzgalov, Biron, Miller and Theodore.

Game 62: Calgary 5 @ Vancouver 3 (*John Madden, **Jan Kolar, ***Jens Jacobs)

Game 63: Chicago 2 @ Calgary 3 (*David Tanabe, **Jarome Iginla, ***Alexander Ovechkin)
With this victory, we have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Alexander Semin (Wsh) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Matt Lashoff (Nsh) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 64: Anaheim 4 @ Calgary 6 (*Fredrik Naslund, **Ryan Getzlaf, ***Paul Mara)
Naslund had a goal and three assists. Richards had two goals and two assists.

F David Laliberte (22) will be out for a month with a twisted ankle suffered in practice. I recall F Scott McCulloch (22) from Lowell.

Game 65: Detroit 2 @ Calgary 4 (*Paul Mara, **Jarome Iginla, ***Bobby Ryan)
F Jan Kolar (27) will be out for 3 weeks with a rotator cuff strain. Iginla will be moving back to wing and be re-united with Richards.

Vincent Lecavalier (TB) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Ed Jovanovski (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Fredrik Naslund (Cgy) wins Rookie of the Month.

I sign draft picks F Markus Andersson (22), D Evgeny Sapozhnikov (19), and F Lars Ogren (18). Andersson will play in Lowell. The other two have been drafted by CHL teams and will play in junior.

Game 66: Calgary 5 @ Minnesota 1 (*Chuck Kobasew, **Scott McCulloch, ***Kris Chucko)

Nashville trades the rights to F Vladimir Chistov (18) and a 1st Round Pick in 2009 to Florida for G Roberto Luongo (29). Damn. If I knew that's all it would take, I would have made the offer long ago.

Dallas trades F Gino Guyer (25) to Anaheim for D Blaker Fisher (20).

Joe Thornton (Bos) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Mika Noronen (Mtl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 67: Calgary 5 @ Chicago 0 (*Marco Buhrer, **David Tanabe, ***Jarome Iginla)

Game 68: Calgary 11 @ Nashville 2 (*Jarome Iginla, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Fredrik Naslund)
Iginla had three goals and an assist. McCulloch and Chucko are showing some serious chemistry on the fourth line. Maybe it's there time together playing in the AHL? No... SI couldn't have programmed that much detail, could they?

Tampa Bay trades D Neil Paiement (20) to Los Angeles for F Mike Cammalleri (26).

Anaheim trades G Justin Peeters (22) and a 1st Round Pick in 2009 to Florida for F Mark Parrish (32).

Nashville trades F Adam Hall (28) to Boston for the rights to G Karri Ramo (22).

Game 69: Minnesota 2 @ Calgary 0 (*Sebastien Caron, **Pierre-Marc Bouchard, ***A.J. Thelen)

Phoenix trades the rights to F Magnus Larsson (19) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009 to Boston for F Nick Drazenovic (22).

Columbus trades F Owen Fussy (26) to Buffalo for G Kevin Couture (23) and a 5th Round Pick in 2009.

Montreal trades G Konstantin Barulin (24) to Columbus for F Jaroslav Balastik (30) and a 5th Round Pick in 2009.

Phoenix trades F Barry Tallackson (25) and an 8th Round Pick in 2009 to Atlanta for D Marc Staal (22).

Tampa Bay trades a 2nd Round Pick in 2009 to St. Louis for D Adam Foote (37).

Florida trades D Adrian Aucoin (35) to Boston for the rights to F Trevor Gillies (20).

New Jersey trades the rights to G Darryl Langkow (18) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2009 to Los Angeles for D Nathan Dempsey (34).

Game 70: Colorado 1 @ Calgary 5 (*Ivo Ruthemann, **Jarome Iginla, ***David Tanabe)
We score four powerplay goals.

J.P. Dumont (Buf) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Janne Niinimaa (Chi) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 71: Calgary 5 @ Vancouver 2 (*Scott McCulloch, **Ivo Ruthemann, ***Jarome Iginla)
McCulloch has five points in his first seven games in the NHL.

Game 72: Boston 2 @ Calgary 6 (*Chuck Kobasew, **John Madden, ***Jarome Iginla)

I sign G Joel Martin (26) from the CHL as a emergency back-up for the playoffs.

Game 73: Columbus 3 @ Calgary 4 (OT) (*Jarome Iginla, **David Tanabe, ***Joakim Lindstrom)
Iginla's overtime winner was his 50th of the year. He's now collected $1.75 million in bonuses and made $9.25 million this year.

Game 74: Calgary 3 @ Los Angeles 5 (*Chuck Kobasew, **Alexander Frolov, ***Jeff O'Neill)
Richards was a -4 and had a '5' rating. I give him a warning, which he accepts without comment.

Chuck Kobasew (Cgy) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Dmitri Kalinin (Buf) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 75: Calgary 8 @ St. Louis 1 (*Jarome Iginla, **John Madden, ***Miikka Kiprusoff)John Madden had two goals and two assists.

F Brad Richards (28) will be out a few days after suffering a stubbed finger in practice.

Jim Rutherford (60) has been fired as the General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Game 76: Nashville 5 @ Calgary 6 (*Fredrik Naslund, **Phil Kessel, ***Matt Lashoff)

F Jan Kolar (27) and F Brad Richards (28) have resumed full practice.

Game 77: Phoenix 3 @ Calgary 1 (*Lance Monych, **Brian Boucher, ***Boyd Devereaux)D Rhett Warrener (33) will be out for 10 days with a twisted knee.

Patrick O'Sullivan (Min) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Nick Schultz (Min) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 78: Los Angeles 3 @ Calgary 6 (*David Tanabe, **Niklas Persson, ***Jarome Iginla)

Carolina have appointed Dave Taylor (53) as General Manager.

I recall D Chris Zarb (24) from Lowell.

Game 79: San Jose 3 @ Calgary 4 (*Jarome Iginla, **Peter Mueller, ***Christian Ehrhoff)

Game 80: Calgary 3 @ Dallas 3 (*Sebastien Bordeleau, **Chuck Kobasew, ***Alexei Ponikarovsky)
D Barret Jackman (28) will be out 3 weeks after suffering a hip flexor strain.

Scott Gomez (NJ) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Zdeno Chara (Ana) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Fredrik Naslund (Cgy) wins Rookie of the Month.

Scott Gomez (NJ) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
David Tanabe (Cgy) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 81: Calgary 3 @ Anaheim 1 (*Jarome Iginla, **Marco Buhrer, ***Chris Kunitz)

I recall F David Laliberte (23) from Lowell and he'll be forced to play defence as Phaneuf is only at 71% and both Jackman and Warrener are out.

Game 82: Vancouver 4 @ Calgary 1 (*Dan Cloutier, **Chris Nielsen, ***Artem Chubarov)The AI didn't like my use of five defencemen and changed up my lineup taking two guys out and inserting Phaneuf. Luckily no one was injured.

That caps off the second greatest regular season in NHL history and best season in Flames' history. We finish first with 62 wins and 129 points, 15 points ahead of Vancouver. Iginla leads the NHL with 56 goals (3 ahead of Heatley) and 117 points (15 ahead of Heatley). Ruthemann is fourth in league scoring with 41 goals and 94 points. Kobasew is twelfth in league scoring with 42 goals and 80 points. Kiprusoff is second in wins with 35, first in GAA at 1.79, and first in save percentage at 0.922%. Naslund leads all rookies with 29 goals and 59 points in 71 games and is a +43.

We will face Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. Florida's first round pick turns into the 9th pick overall. Cole ends up with 6 goals, 10 points and a -17 in 28 games for Florida even playing with Jokinen and Horton.

Canada's quarter-final loss to the Czech Republic has cost me my job as the General Manager of Team Canada. I lost both D Jay Bouwmeester (25) and F Nathan Horton (23) for that game - two key players throughout the entire tournament.

Goaltending and a lack of secondary scoring is what did us in. Kiprusoff, Naslund, Kolar, Madden and Kobasew had disappointing playoffs.

Jim Playfair's contract is expiring. I offer him a demotion to Assistant Coach which he accepts. I promote current Assistant Coach Adam Cook to Head Coach as his attributes are through the roof, he prefers an attractive attacking style and his reputation is 'Star'. I also hire an Austrian as an assistant coach who also prefers offence and has a 'Star' reputation. I fired one of my coaches who only has a 'Conditioning' style.

I just went back to check. Grahame and DiPietro were nominated for the Vezina and I voted for Grahame but no award was given.

I think its pretty tough to win a cup in this game....I still havent done it....Congrats on Ivo Rutheman....he's turned out amazing....when i think of high scoring europeans on Calgary, he will join the ranks of Robert Reichal, and Hakan Loob.....Ive been trying to trade for Luongo in my game forever, and those bastards in Florida wont take the world for him....cant believe he went for basically notihng......Im also very disheartend by the state of my Leafs....SPEND SOME MONEY JF JR.....damn you

We'll see what happens in the off-season. Jovonovski, Pronger, Sopel, Witt, Zubov, Kariya, Doan, Morrison, Palffy and Davidsson are all free agents. Of course, Vancovuer has the budget to re-sign most of them or whoever else is available.

The Flames actually made around $2 million last year but none of it has gone to the player budget. We still sit at $47.5 million.

The Leafs have spent money but not on improving their defence or goaltending.

Ivo Ruthemann has been awesome and arguably the best Swiss player to ever play in the NHL. It doesn't hurt he gets first line ice-time with Iginla.

Calgary trades F Jan Kolar (28) to Ottawa for F Mike Fisher (29). Ottawa jumps at the chance to add a 30 goal scorer who disappears in the playoffs. To be fair, he had 5 goals and 8 points in 18 games but Markovic is going to get third line right wing time this season and Kolar is out of the picture. I've been looking to add Fisher for some time.

Weaknesses: strength, agility, balance

1(4) - Columbus selects

G - Dave Davidson, 6'0", 176lbs. - Kamloops Blazers, WHL

63gp, 27w, 3so, 2.98gaa, 0.901sv%, 7.06AvR
Strengths: work rate, glove, blocker
Weaknesses: creativity, influence, agility

I was hoping Belanger would drop to #9. I considered him the best goalie in the draft but I'm still going to get a good player as this year's draft is big on the top end but drops off rapidly after the first round.

1(9) - Calgary selects

LW/RW - Robert Petrick, 6'1", 178lbs. - HC Polygon Priedvidza, Slovakian 1st Division
Slovakian (ISS Ranking: #36)
58gp, 33g, 14a, 47pts, +7, 50pim, 7.36AvR
Strengths: teamwork, positioning, slapshot
Weaknesses: strength, influence, anticipation

I couldn't pass this guy up because he has the flair and offensive attributes our team lacks. At 17 (he turns 18 in nine days), he's already better than Naslund who just won the Calder Trophy. I hate rushing prospects but he looks NHL ready. If I had to make a comparison, it would be Sergei Samsonov.

1(10) - St. Louis selects

LD/RD - Shawn Andrews, 6'1", 174lbs. - Everett Silvertips, WHL
Canadian (ISS Ranking: #5)
72gp, 13g, 32a, 45pts, +3, 141pim, 7.18AvR
Strengths: creativity, influence, positioning
Weaknesses: faceoffs, determination, speed

1(11) - Pittsburgh selects

LW/RW - Nick Wood, 6'0", 207lbs. - Lewiston MAINEiacs, QMJHL
Canadian (ISS Ranking: #28)
38gp, 27g, 33a, 60pts, +25, 20pim, 7.76AvR
Strengths: teamwork, acceleration, bravery
Weaknesses: aggression, influence, anticipation

1(12) - NY Rangers select

LW - Jeff Little, 5'11", 163lbs. - Kootenay Ice, WHL
Canadian (ISS Ranking: #10)
69gp, 30g, 29a, 59pts, +39, 71pim, 7.25AvR
Strengths: stamina, positioning, strength
Weaknesses: creativity, flair, determination

1(13) - Carolina selects

RD - Dave MacDonald, 5'9", 160lbs. - Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL
Canadian (ISS Ranking: #24)

Other Flames' draft picks:

2(59)

G - Peter Leskovjansky, 5'7", 160lbs. - HK Zemgale Jelgava, Latvian Championship
Latvian (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
39gp, 22w, 1so, 1.92gaa, 0.914sv%, 8.13AvR
Strengths: recovery, blocker, glove
Weaknesses: creativity, influence, determination

The Little Latvian Clone? Already has very good technical attributes but needs more stamina to play regularly. I'm hoping out of Hagman, Lindstrom and Leskovjansky, I get at least one starting goaltender.

3(89)

G - Neil Phillips, 5'11", 165lbs. - Boston College Eagles, NCAA
British (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
27gp, 10w, 2so, 2.33gaa, 0.901sv%, 7.30AvR
Strengths: creativity, bravery, glove
Weaknesses: strength, passing, agility

I normally wouldn't take a player like this in the third round but the draft is weak and there aren't too many players left to get you excited. Phillips is the reason the Great Britain national squad has done well in international tournaments over the past year.

4(119)

RD - Greg O'Brien, 6'0, 169lbs. - Oshawa Generals, OHL
Canadian (ISS Ranking: #128)
68gp, 3g, 15a, 18pts, -8, 40pim, 6.99AvR
Strengths: pokecheck, checking, stamina
Weaknesses: flair, faceoffs, aggression

A project. May turn into a depth defenceman.

5(149)

RW - John Young, 6'3", 213lbs. - Prince Albert Raiders, WHL
American (ISS Ranking: #173)
72gp, 17g, 17a, 34pts, +23, 140pim, 7.03AvR
Strengths: stamina, checking, positioning
Weaknesses: anticipation, creativity, bravery

My scouts hated him but there are slim pickings and I'm not going to select a guy with poor attributes just because my scouts like him. That failed miserably with Andrew Little a couple years ago. Looks to be a grinding winger. Think Jason Weimer with more speed but less offence and bravery. Yeah...

6(179)

C/RW - Petr Rejthar, 6'0", 169lbs. - HC Ceske Budjovice Jrs, Czech Junior League
Czech (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
61gp, 30g, 33a, 63pts, +11, 54pim, 7.41AvR
Strengths: positioning, work rate, speed
Weaknesses: strength, aggression, bravery

He won't be 18 for another month. I'll leave him in Europe and see what happens.

7(209)

LW - Andreas Lind, 6'2", 205lbs. - Morrums GolS IK Jrs, Swedish Junior League
Swedish (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
61gp, 36g, 17a, 53pts, +47, 64pim, 7.89AvR
Strengths: positioning, speed, aggression
Weaknesses: creativity, strength, bravery

There's very little left with no one my scouts like. It's a shallow draft so it's basically a guessing game now.

8(239)

C - Antti Takala, 5'9", 194lbs. - Helsingen Jokerit Jrs, Finnish Junior League
Finnish (ISS Ranking: #186)
61gp, 22g, 29a, 51pts, +21, 34pim, 7.54AvR
Strengths: creativity, faceoffs, positioning
Weaknesses: strength, flair, bravery

He's ranked, his attributes aren't bad, so who knows...

9(269)

C/RW - Vjatcheslava Grabovsky, 6'4", 176lbs. - Ak-Bars Kazan, Russian Superleague
Khazak (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
53gp, 6g, 11a, 17pts, +0, 32pim, 6.83AvR
Strengths: positioning, stamina, speed
Weaknesses: creativity, determination, strength

He's been playing in the Russian Superleague since he was 15 so here's another flyer...

Calgary trades the rights to G Martin Bartek (27) and a 7th Round Pick in 2010 to Washington for the rights to D Jay Plante (18). An enforcer on the blueline that I wanted.

Phoenix trades F Jason Jaspers (28) to NY Islanders for G Ryan Plante (19).

Top, top, TOP dynasty Karim.

It seems that you dominate the regular season, but then in the playoffs it seems your guys can't stand the pressure. That and Vancouer always seem to bump it up a notch against you come playoff time. With Calgary's budget have you gone as far as you can?

Thanks, tanglewood. I really can't figure out what it's going to take to get over Vancouver. This year, Kiprusoff struggled against them. Naslund and Kolar, great regular season players, didn't do much. Meanwhile, Madden only had 3 assists in 18 games in the playoffs. I can't afford expensive veterans outside the top six forwards and top four defenceman, so the roster is round out by youngster, prospects and inexpensive veterans.

How did Vancouver get an $80+ million budget anyway?

I like how the draft varies from year to year. Different leagues dominate, sometimes it's shallow with a great top end, other times it's deep with no clear #1, or maybe a certain position dominates. Riz really did a good job...

Looking at those draft files, you must be a genius at mining the ninth round for solid talent.

I wish! I'm only taking advantage of the AI since it never drafts anyone older than 21 or 22. So if there's an older European that can step in immediately, I now he's safe as a 9th rounder.

Calgary trades F Greg Gardner (22) and a 1st Round Pick in 2010 to Columbus for the rights to F Rostislav Olesz (23). Olesz played last year in Sweden because he couldn't come to terms with Columbus. I hope I can agree to a contract with him. Plus, if he signs with Calgary, he won't have to worry about Dion Phaneuf. Olesz agrees to $16 million/4 years. I now have a legitimate one-two punch up the middle with Richards and Olesz along with Iginla and Kobasew on the right side. I think this is easily the best trade I've ever made.

Tampa Bay signs D Colin White (31) from Toronto for $10.8 million/3 years.

Vancouver re-sign D Ed Jovanovski (33) for $12.5 million/2 years.

Colorado signs D Chris Pronger (34) from Vancouver for $17.25 million/2 years.

Toronto signs D Zdeno Chara (32) from Anaheim for $15 million/2 years.

Colorado re-sign F Pavol Demitra (34) for $14 million/2 years.

Phoenix sign F Martin St. Louis (34) from Vancouver for $17.5 million/2 years.

St. Louis signs F Daniel Briere (31) from Buffalo for $9.1 million/2 years.

Pittsburgh have appointed Jeff Daniels (41) from the Erie Otters as their new General Manager.

Buffalo signs F Radek Dvorak (32) from Phoenix for $6.7 million/2 years.

NY Rangers sign D Pavel Kubina (32) from Tampa Bay for $13.25 million/2 years.

Pittsburgh trades G Justin Gibney (19) to Montreal for a 3rd Round Pick in 2010.

Detroit trades F Zach Hamill (20) and an 8th Round Pick in 2012 to Dallas for the rights to F Antti Tikkanen (19) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2010.

Vancouver re-sign F Paul Kariya (34) for $12 million/2 years.

Los Angeles sign F Marc Savard (31) from Atlanta for $11.5 million/2 years.

Vancouver re-sign D Brent Sopel (32) for $6.2 million/2 years.

Vancouver signs F John Madden (34) from Calgary for $12 million/2 years.

Anaheim signs D Nick Boynton (30) from Boston for $10.2 million/3 years.

Buffalo signs D Janne Niinimaa (34) from Chicago for $9.1 million/2 years.

Phoenix trades F Michael Tessier (24) to NY Islanders for the rights to F Jani Reunanen (17) and a 5th Round Pick in 2010.

Vancouver re-signs D Brendan Witt (34) for $12 million/2 years.

Vancouver re-signs F Shane Doan (32) for $11.5 million/2 years.

Colorado signs F Johan Davidsson (33) from Vancouver for $11 million/2 years.

Detroit sign F Danius Zubrus (31) from Washington for $14.7 million/3 years.

NY Islanders sign D Denis Gauthier (32) from Dallas for $5.6 million/2 years.

Montreal re-signs G Evgeny Nabokov (33) for $4 million/2 years.

Vancouver re-signs F Zigmund Palffy (37) for $8 million/1 year.

Ottawa trades the rights to F Troy Brouwer (23) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2010 to Los Angeles for F Mika Halava (22).

Chicago appoints Jeremy Roenick (39) as an Assistant Coach.

Philadelphia signs D Adrian Aucoin (36) from Boston for $6 million/1 year.

Atlanta signs F Alexei Kovalev (36) from NY Islanders for $7.25 million/1 year.

Washington signs F J.P. Dumont (31) from Buffalo for $8.3 million/2 years.

The Erie Otters of the OHL have appointed former Flames' scout Jason Hill (45) as Head Coach.

Vancouver signs D Richard Matvichuk (36) from Colorado for $2.4 million/1 year.

Anaheim signs D Marek Zidlicky (32) from NY Islanders for $7 million/2 years.

Los Angeles trades the rights to D Travis Ehrhardt (19) to Anaheim for D Dmitri Bykov (32).

I'm having trouble re-signing British RFA F Matthew Myers (24). He's a 4th/5th center and wants $750,000. Not bloody likely!
