You could make a case for it. He was 9th in WHIP, 6th in ERA, 1st in Wins, 3rd in K's that year. Plus, this is a small league. I ran a 16-team test to crank out some stats as quickly as I could.

Just glancing at one season (2027).

AL Top 10 ranges from one guy with 42, to bottom guy with 22.

NL Top 10 ranges from one guy with 44, to bottom guy with 17.

Yeah, I'd say he's toned it down.

I had a guy even better than your guy, expect he blew his arm out in his early-to-mid 30's. He finished with 312 victories and 5,500 K's, and had one year where he went 23-1 with a 1.20 ERA, and something like 24 walks, 275 Ks, and 155 hits allowed, in 270 innings. Unbelievable.

He was a 6th round (87th overall) pick, also.

I also noticed that the #3 career HR guy, Enciso, was a 13th round (197th overall) pick.

Yes, especially considering that the overall pick numbers imply a 3rd rounder in a 30 team league and a 7th rounder.

Ok, I just HAD to reply to this.

This just might be the LONGEST FOFC post in history, although I'm not as salty as some of you here.

I saw this mentioned in the OOTP6 problem thread below, yes it is a problem that will be fixed in the first patch. The workaround is to disable the 40 man roster, move him, and then re-enable it.

Umm, rather large problem, IMO.

In SkyDog's test league, EVERY player on the AVG career leaderboard who was _not_ drafted in 2004 is a 1st Round pick.

I know V.5 was too random, but if ONLY first round picks (and I think only 1 or 2 were outside the top 8) are on the AVG leaderboard, development is far too predictable.

Saves leaderboard is fine: An 8th and 6th, mixed in 1st, 2nds, and 3rds - seems fine to me, in this category.

Anybody have any thoughts on this potentially huge problem? Should things be this way?

I posted on the OOTP boards - hopefully we'll get a response from someone on the OOTP crew.

I totally agree that this is uncool. Not sure how quickly this can be resolved though...wouldn't this require a pretty major tweaking to player development?

Hey guys, quick question for anyone who knows ....

If I want to put a player photo into the game that I have made myself, how do I go about doing that? The "default photo" shows up for every player that does not have his own picture, and if I replace that, then everyone will have the face of the player picture I created. How can I go in and see what I have to name the picture specifically?

Thanks for any and all help.

SkyDog,

If you haven't already, please also bring to their attention the issue with the closer being brought not only too soon, but also in situations where the game is well out of hand for the other team.

I can accept a guy being brought in to get some work, but not when he's already thrown 60ish pitches over the last three days, and definitely not when there's a mopup reliever and two high-duration middle relievers still available in the pen. That's just sloppy.

Btw, there are some real jerkfaces at the OOTP forums. The secret is to be blindly overzealous about your love for a game. I respect all the dudes who make our fannnntastic text-sims, but some of the people at those forums make me laugh and wanna punch 'em in the face...at the same TIME!!!

Well, those home and away splits for the teams in 2028 are definitely close to being unrealistic. There were 7 teams that did better at home, 8 teams that did better on the road, and 1 team that had the same record at home as it did on the road. That means less than half the teams in the league posted a better home winning percentage than away winning percentage. Stating it in order of home better-away better-same, it was 7-8-1.

Compare those results to the home and away records of major league baseball from 1890-2003. In those 114 seasons, only 3 times did just half of the teams finish with home records better than away records (1917, 1923, and 1948), and in only one of those years was it an even split at 8-8. In the other two years it was 8-7-1. In EVERY other major league season from those years, a higher proportion of teams finished with better home winning percentages than road winning percentages.

The next worst performance for home teams, in percentage terms of the number of teams in the majors, was in 1953 when 56% of the teams did better at home (9-6-1). After that it was 1994, when 57% of the teams did better at home (16-12). Every other season had 62% or more of the teams in the league finishing with better home records than road records. There were 20 seasons in which EVERY team finished with a better home winning percentage (and 12 of those happened after 1900). The overall percentage for teams finishing better at home over those 114 seasons was 84%. That means five out of six teams did better in their home park. I doubt you'll see anything like that happen in OOTP.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that more realistic looking splits of home and away records is a pretty tiny thing compared to getting the player stats right. It just irks me though when I look at the expanded standings in OOTP and see the almost random splits between how teams do at home and how they do on the road. It just isn't right...

Wow...this thread is getting pretty big! In case I may have missed it in one of this thread's earlier pages, I think a patch is coming out on Wednesday. At least, from what a user has pointed out in a Markus post in the support forums.

Not quite so sure what's included on the patch, but thought I'd drop a line for those folks waiting patiently for their endurance fixes. Er, I'm hoping it includes endurance fixes...

Well, I apparently had a brief power outage at my office yesterday evening. The computer I left simming was off, so when I came in early this morning to look at my 100-year sim results, that wasn't possible. Instead, I spent the time to consolidate the issues in this thread into one post.

First off, the "biggies" (low-endurance SP's, crashing in long-term sims) appear to have been fixed already, and Markus says he's addressed the high-draft-choices-always-pan-out issue for the next 6.01 beta. Please check the rest of this post for anything I've left out. Stuff that I knew was already reported on the beta board has not been re-stated in this post, so just ask me if you think something is missing, and I'll let you know the deal.

Everything mentioned below is being posted at the beta board in a few seconds.

--Ben

INTERFACE ISSUES

  • In the initial draft, when you sort by batting or pitching rateings when looking at players, you cannot see their age, you have to constantly toggle. The initial league draft is a huge feature for me and this is a minor annoyance.
  • At the very least the age, speed, stealing ability and running rateings should be on the general bating rateings screen. About 40% of the draft page is taken up by the huge font draft order portion which could easily be reduced to a smaller font and take up much less space which would allow for a wider rateings info area, as it is it's a bit tedious to toggle back and forth and find out how old and what the running ability of the best rated hitters are.
  • We need more control over which injuries we receive notification over. I sim a month at a time, and *never* stop it from simming for a day-to-day injury. Allow the user to pick if we should be notified on Day-to-Day injuries, and Out for longer than ____ days.
  • The “do you want to place this player on the 60-day disabled list?” dialog is awkward. The default should be the 15-day list. People are trained to check “yes” on those types of “confirm” dialogs. Checking “yes” puts the guy on 60-day. I’d switch it so that there are “15-day” and “60-day” buttons.
  • The more I try to read the html cards, the more I realize that the news section has to be organized by event (award, milestone, injury, signing, etc.) to get anything out of it. One of the players in my league that has simmd through 2043 is a monster - 748 HRs - and appears to have won about 9 World Championships with 3 or 4 different teams. I'm havingto resort to tallying them on a separate piece of paper because it's impossible to make any sense of his mile-long news section.
  • SkyDog, how about suggesting to Markus to add the ability to view career stat leaders for active players?
  • My biggest complaint is that in talent only leagues like my online league, we can't see endurance now- and that's a real pain for us. We havent switched over and probably won't for a while, but Id love a way around this. (Fixed.)
  • With the DIPS engine, it would be important to track HR allowed in year-to-year stats.
  • SkyDog, can you mention to Markus that some of us want them to bring back the reduced talent levels. We don't all want to see the L/R splits.

TWEAKS
  • On the whole, teams are doing worse at home and better on the road than they should.
  • Argh, whenever you start a new league, it qualifies everyone for rookie records. I was hoping this would get fixed, because it has the ability to differentiate rookies on awards.
  • There seems to be no rhyme or reason with signing coaches and staff. They all just randomly sign with other teams. What is the trick? It certainly isn't offering them what they ask for. It isn't offering them 20% more than what they ask for. More years doesn't seem to help. Their preference seems irrellevant. There's no advice in the help file because there is no help file. What is the strategy supposed to be?
  • The default setup for creating a Custom League is the MLB setup, but lacking the team stadiums and affiliates. Currently, it is impossible to start a fictional league with real stadiums and affiliates.
  • Could we get one character added to the Playoff Round names? "League Championship Serie" still doesn't look right.
  • If you haven't already, please also bring to their attention the issue with the closer being brought not only too soon, but also in situations where the game is well out of hand for the other team. I can accept a guy being brought in to get some work, but not when he's already thrown 60ish pitches over the last three days, and definitely not when there's a mopup reliever and two high-duration middle relievers still available in the pen. Oh...someone correct me if I'm wrong here. Based on the data I've looked at, it *appears* that he addressed the low-endurance starter issue by limiting endurance drops, which I agree is the right way to go. I've yet to run across a starter-turned-reliever, which I'd like to see at *some* point, but I can live with that. Ksyrup's concern about many, many starters-turned relievers being in the league would have been far more annoying.

I talked to Markus yesterday about the concerns over lack of HBPs as well as tracking Homeruns allowed. Apparently, making this change would be very time-consuming and require a huge change to his internal data structures. That being said, he sees this as more of a future fix rather than a quick bug-fix patch.

I just checked on him. Confirm that he was listed as "Reliever" with Endurance of 40 earlier in his career. Moved to "Closer" when his stuff rating went up, and then, in 2030, he had two separate endurance bumps and he ended up at 49, and by the end of that year was "Starting Pitcher". I'm looking at the pitchers with endurance 45-55, and I'm not seeing any former starters who are now relievers. I'd like to see a small handful of those, like I'm seeing a small handful of relievers-turned-starters.

*** OOTP 6 Patch update *** So, the patch is currently being tested, and it fixes the reported bugs, and also adds some nice stuff:

- Refined player development
- Added an options to list all players in the amateur draft
- The option to display the play-by-play at the bottom with a bigger font
- The pitcher endurance is no longer hidden when playing with hidden ability ratings.

The patch should be ready for release tomorrow!

Has anyone brought up the issue with "find player by ratings"? I find that, even though my ratings are set to 1-100, the game will only search by 1-10 (or possibly 2-8). Also, it doesn't limit searches by position effectively.
