As a Panther fan, needless to say, I'm dissappointed. The offense gave them several chances to win the game in the 4th quarter, but after every score the defense was a no-show and let the Patriots march right back down the field. Julius Peppers was a non-factor, he was dominated the entire game. At 29-29, the Panthers were in good shape to go into OT, then Kasey kicks the ball out of bounds, virtually assuring a game-winning field goal attempt for the Patriots.
Overall, the best team won the game, but Carolina's defense did not rise to the occasion when needed. |

Vrable is only playing because Collins got hurt early, and man he did an awesome job.

Carolina covers the spread, though.

Was that a hickey on Adam Vinatieri's neck during the post-game interview?

I agree, Vic, I was very disappointed with our run defense, they were running on us almost at will. The defense was getting some pressure on Brady, but "some pressure" isn't enough when he was still making a lot of big plays and they were able to run the ball well. You just can't put that many tools in the Patriots' hands and expect to win. |

I tuned in at the end of the 3rd when the score was 14-10. I love it how I usually catch only the good parts of the game.
I am very happy the Pats won, they accomplished a great achievment this season. The 72 Dolphins didn't win 17 by being pretty, neither the 04 Pats - just extremely well coached and consistent. |

Actually, with about 5 minutes left in the 1st half, the game got good.

I guess I can understand how somebody might kick a kickoff out of bounds. But really, how can you kick a kickoff out of bounds?

What a fantastic game. The best Super Bowl in a while. I was taking a deep breath in the 2nd quarter thinking, ok it's not the classic shootout, but it's still a good clean defensive fight. Then wow! Delhomme is a lot of fun to watch.
Something that was little noted by the announcers is that the Patriots secondary was getting roasted. At least Tyrone Poole's side of the field was. Maybe that was a result of the game plan, but the Panthers definitely exposed a weakness. Last edited by Desnudo : 02-01-2004 at 10:09 PM. |

Here's the most telling stat for the game:
The panthers were totally taken out of their game. To their credit, its amazing they hung in with what turned out to be a shootout.

good game. Reallly really wanted to see overtime. Can't believe carolina went for 2, can't believe kasay kicked it out of bounds. But if Carolina had won Pats fans would be saying "can't believe vinitieri missed 2 FGs and that they squibbed it and let carolina score before the half" ... great game, hope carolina can get back into the playoffs again next year, if Delhomme can develop a bit more this team could be around for a few years.

Good lord, i knew people would go over bored about this kickoff out of bounds. One play does not make a game, and if the defense had stopped them it would have been of little importance..........so many things factor into a game like this and who wins it, but i always seem to be preaching this, and no one cares, so i'll stop now.
one GREAT Superbowl overall.....sad to see this season end, great playoffs and regular season.

Steve Bartman. Anyway, Pats won, Panthers lost, teams that lose do stuff to make them lose, and critics/fans pick them apart for it.... I just wanted to see over-time. Last edited by Deattribution : 02-01-2004 at 11:24 PM. |

Great Superbowl, and hopefully the Panthers get SOME respect. They almost pulled this thing off.

Absolutely! The offense anyways. Delhomme, Smith, and Muhammed were very impressive. A very bright future. |

Yeah, Delhomme did everything but win. Hard to play any better than he did.

He played well the last 33 minutes. The first 27? 1-9 passing, 1 yd, 1 fumble lost on his own 20. |

They DO have a decent defense, just in this game the QBs became God-like.

I think the turf turned receivers into superstars. It seems like every comeback pass had a cornerback falling down behind the receiver. Something that needs to be looked into for future games.

Indeed, and that is what's -to me- even more impressive: to be able to rise to the occasion after such a awful start and end up having such a GREAT game and be THAT CONFIDENT IN THE CLUTCH, making big plays after big plays in the worst of circumstances and with the biggest of pressures around. Delhomme was just great to watch.

Question:
Its third and one at the Carolina 5. The Pats have the ball with 23 seconds left and no time outs. Why did the Panthers play against the run there? NE needed a TD, and couldn't afford to run the ball with that amount of time left and no time outs. But the Panthers play for the run and give up a TD. Luckily they get a FG after a poor kickoff, but still, you had to have known they would pass there. Also, a bad job by the DC, the Panthers got caught by that screen pass far too many times. |
