Last night's episode was awesome.

My guess is that the cheerleader dad is looking for Heroes to try and clear out their abilities and make them regular people again. This could be a government program created post Sylar or be unrelated to Sylar.

A question I got thinking about is what happens when the power absorbing guy meets Sylar?

Some reactions:

First, the bad.

Dr. Suresh continues to be poorly, poorly written. He has the unenviable task of being sort of the "narrator guy" who just babbles on about evolution, the map, his father's research, blah, blah, blah. This episode, however, the writers took his character for a whole new turn for the worse (though I am sure it wont last). I know what they were trying to do with him. He got his father's ashes and was blown off by the politician so he was having a "crisis of faith" if you will. The problem with that, however, is that it was 180 degree turn from everything we've seen from him up until that point. It's like in this episode he suffered from what I call "The Scully Syndrome".

The Scully Syndrome (named after Dr. Dana Scully from X-Files fame) is what happens when writers seem to "re-boot" or "wipe clean" a character's memory from one episode to the next. I loved the dynamic in X-Files (for a long while) and the skeptic vs. believer thing worked well. But as time went on and Scully was exposed to more weird things over and over and over again, the skeptic thing seemed kind of silly. She would say something like "Mulder, there are no aliens." And I would scream at the TV "What about all those aliens that ran by you in the last episode?!? And that flying saucer thing you saw!?!"

This sort of happened here. It was like the guy had no memory at all of the handyman who was snooping around his father's apartment and tried to kill him, or the guy who was in his apartment in India, or Sylar's freaky apartment, or any of that stuff. All of which would make his father's research all the more credible and likely to be real. Up until last episode he was always the believer in all of this. Instead, he gets blown off by one guy and all of a sudden he gets to play the roll of the skeptic to Peter's wide-eyed believer. Seemed a bit too contrived for me. I see where they wanted the dynamic, but it was forced.

The good:

I loved the effects they used for the painter. It was really well done, how he was seeing the vision and then pressed his paint brush down on it, capturing the image on the canvas. I also liked how he was in trance, eyes whited over (Stormesque!). It was all good.

Evil Ali Larter is hot. I assume Evil Ali is stronger, faster, etc. than Normal Ali. I think Typhoid Mary (from Daredevil) was sort of like this too, if I recall, though her "split personality" had telekinesis and pyrokinesis . Very nice.

(Side note: Ali Larter appears to be my dog's favorite character. He watches the show with me on Monday mornings and he left the room during the first half of the show (little Ali), but came back when she was on. He always seems to be "paying attention" to the screen when she's on.)

Hiro was the bomb shazam once more. The stint in the casino made perfect sense as did the allusion to Peter Parker, who also used his powers at first for personal gain (the wrestling match) before honing his vision towards being a hero.

I loved future Hiro. I was grinning ear-to-ear when I saw him. He was the perfect superhero bad-ass cliche: the black clothes, the katana across his back, the pony-tail, the little soul patch thing, his gruff way of speaking. It's exactly as I would imagine Hiro would try to establish himself, living out a geek's fantasy of what it means to be a bad ass superhero. The only thing he was missing was an eye-patch or perhaps a cigar, but I'll take his line about Peter looking "different without the scar". It was classic.

The cheerleader scene played out exactly as I expected. I like how they made the football guy a little more evil (serial rapist) than just a jerk ass. It was well done and what she did made perfect sense.

I'm very much looking forward to next week's episode.

Great summary of my thoughts as well. I loved this episode. It confirmed most of my earlier suspicions. I'm also more in the camp of the cheerleader's dad not being truly evil, but more of a governmental agency that is somewhat well meaning.

Why the homage to Rainman? was someone on the cast associated with it?

I LOVE that comparison. I think Medium has the same type of problem, where the husband wakes up each episode to his wife's premonition and dispells it as only being a dream. I sincerely hope that the creative team does not continue this Scullyish reversal with the Professor's son.

I love NBC.com! I was able to catch the last 5-8 minutes I missed last night because my stupid DVR (thanks RA for telling me what happened ). Very, very cool ending. Future Hiro looked great . Fluent English and dressed like a ninja... seems so like the character.

I dont know him today and havnt spoken to him in that six years but if he hasn't changed then Im glad that he is on a hit show because no one that I knew deserved it more than him.

He also had a pretty solid role on Gilmore Girls for a few years playing Rory's on-again, off-again romantic interest.

I still can't get over how much I'm liking this show. I so thought it was going to be a dud, but it's gotten better every week.

The mom hero that has a kid, looks like the kid is a mix race of black and white? So its possible the father will be black.

Uhh... the father is black. Like I said, most of the relationships in this series are interracial. Furthermore, back in Episode 2 or 3 there was that whole argument between the stripper and her son's grandmother, who is most definitely African-American.

I didn't have the highest hopes for it either, but it's delightfully exceded my expectations.

Also, I'm sure a lot of people (perhaps the majority of people) thought this show looked really dumb and still do. You're just not likely to find them posting in this thread.

I expected it to blow because I figured they were just take the 4400 from USA and trying to put it on the big network. So far I am pleasantly surprised.

I never saw the commercials for it, only the trailers in movie theatres, which is what got me stoked for it.

What I was getting at is that I think the show will head towards a showdown between him and Sylar eventually, it makes the most sense. At least as one of the major storylines.

Four. Fifth one's tonight and I know they replayed from 8-11 yesterday. What I was wondering is if they plan on replaying like 1-3 or 1-4 again anytime soon in that block as I know some people who wanted to get into the series after two or three episodes, but felt they'd missed too much by missing first couple.

Torrent is your friend.

Given what has been happening since jb's spoiler, does anyone else think that his spoiler is BS? I don't see it happening tonight. The story doesn't appear to be any where close to having something like that happen.

I wouldn't expect them to replay it AGAIN. A replay like that is rare enough, let alone to do it twice.

I could see a Lost-like recap episode maybe..

If someone wants, PM him. Otherwise, let's hold off mentioning it specifically in this thread until it happens or is obviously not going to happen at all (and i don't mean not happen in this episode).

Man, what an episode!

I'm very pleased to know I was right about something which I'm not mentioning for the sake of the Pacific/Mountain people.

I'll comment more a little later on.

Kick Ass!!! This show just keeps getting better... Nathan flying and everyone running into each other (I loved Nikki's face at Ando saying "I thought you could help me", thinking another kind of help). The ending cliffhanger was awesome (as usual). Man, I can't wait until next week. And "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" is a very interesting and mysterious catchphrase.

Are you talking about the last scene and last episode's last scene?

The way that Peter Petrelli flew was excellent. I was like, "This show is awesome!"

I keep whispering to my wife: "Save the cheerleader...save the world."

Yep!

I was so stoked about being right that the mind wipe guy was DL.

One plotline I'm curious to see what they do with is Brodie's newfound amnesia. I don't think they'll just end it there and it's a hanging point that I think they could do some very interesting things with.
