And Sergio hands the tourney to Tiger, dropping his tee shot on the famous island green on 17 into the water.

Way to go, Sergio. I knew he'd choke. He can't handle Tiger. If they'd been in the same group, he'd shot +1 or something.

I was rooting for the Swedish kid, honestly. Love that about golf that an unknown guy who can show up and have a strong week and hang with the stars. Still, he'll get a nice payday after this one.

Sergio misses the putt for triple, is about to push it in for 7. Lingmerth still at -12 and just missed the birdie putt that'd have given him a share of the lead. Those Garcia yips are contagious.

Lindsey Vonn won't miss this chance at putting herself into the media for this deal. I wondered if she was on the grounds and there she is.

A fitting end for Garcia.

Actually, no, a fitting end would be to go throw himself into the lake on 17.

Only if Tiger was encased in concrete & chained to his ankle.

The whole thing seems odd to me that a marshal would come out and specifically go after Tiger and say he 'lacked character.' Sounds like a marshal who can't stand Tiger from the start.

At the opening round of the Byron Nelson yesterday, Keegan Bradley shot an incredible 60. And that was with two bogeys!

To clarify, the belly putters will still be legal, they just can't be anchored against any part of the body. The putting motion has to be a swing, not a pivot.

Ouch. Sergio (either accidentally or on purpose) goes racist on Tiger:

I guess I never understood the remarks about food being tied to racism. If you make fried chicken, I'll be over too, and I'm white. Of course, if you are making ribs, I'll be over sooner.

I doubt it was a deliberate racial comment. The only time I can ever remember hearing about fried chicken in the context of racism was the fuss over Fuzzy's comments about the Masters dinner back in the late 90s. It is not crazy to think that an outsider speaking in his second language is not familiar or does not understand the reference. I also doubt many people in the room had a clue that the comment might be perceived as racist in the US.

Leaving the possible racist comments aside, I think that the media is making too much of the animosity between Tiger and Sergio. They don't like each other, but who cares. I can name a load of golfers who hate both of them, and pretty much nobody on tour gets on with everyone (apart from Steve Stricker).

I m not saying he is racist but damn of all the food he chose to associate with Tiger, fried chicken is the one he chose? Not cheeseburgers or hot dogs? The only thing that would have gone over worst would have been bananas.

If you were to ask the average UK citizen about US food, Cheeseburgers and Fried Chicken would probably be at the top of the list thanks to your fast food chains.

I honestly can't see this as a deliberate racist comment. I think that people are forgetting that the rest of the world has no idea why this might cause offense.

But Sergio is not an average European citizen and he did not choose cheeseburgers.

Yeah I figure at best it's an ignorant attempt to joke about that situation and at worst he knew exactly what he was saying.

As for the original I never knew about what a POS Zoeller was until now. Holy crap

Sorry Ryan, your head is in the sand (or somewhere else) if you don't think that the comment has a racist tinge. Sergio is worldly to know what an insinuation made regarding watermellon or fried chicken would mean. He almost definitely is aware of the backlash from Fuzzy's fried chicken comment made at the Masters some years ago. There's no chance in hell that Sergio wasn't trying to lash out at Tiger. Or do you really think he was trying to invite Woods to dinner via the press?!?

For the record, I don't think Sergio is racist. Nor do I think Fuzzy was racist. I think they were both frustrated at being embarrassed by Tiger and lashed out. They did so in a juvenile manner and said something designed to needle Tiger and in doing so made a racist insinuation. I believe both of them quickly regretted their comments and realized that they were wrong. So while I don't think this needs to be front-page news, let's not try to excuse the comment.

Fuzzy wasn't/isn't a POS. He was frustrated and made a bad joke borne out of frustration (Fuzzy was known as a jokester, unlike Sergio). Fuzzy was a former winner of the tourney and had just shot a 78 in the final round to blow any chance of winning while Woods set the record at 18 under par. A lot of golfers were embarassed and Fuzzy said a shitty thing while frustrated (and probably half-cocked since he was drinking at the time).

After that, Zoeller publicly apologized on numerous occasions. He also went to lunch with Tiger to personally apologize after Woods didn't return phone calls by Zoeller.

If we were all judged by our worst comments, we'd all look like monsters. Don't judge someone by just one of theirs. Look at context and their body of work before doing so.

Sergio should be more embarrassed that when nobody incorrectly pulled clubs from their bags, he hit 3 balls in the drink on the final 2 holes.

Ooof. The head of the European Tour leaped in to defend Sergio.

He should have looked before he leaped, saying Sergio has "many colored friends"

It isn't quite pro golf, but today I took 2nd in an NCGA Qualifier in Hollister California. As a reward, I get to play a two-day tourney in June at Spyglass Hill on the NCGA's dime. I'm rather excited (and quite drunk), so I thought I'd share.

The Diablo course at Ridgemark. They have 36 holes there, and I had played the other 18 (Gavilan) twice. Was my first time at Diablo. Nice little course. The layout and quality is muni-ish (there's three really nice, challenging holes and the rest are very straightforward, open and easy), but the greens were in incredible shape and were crazy difficult. The fact that we didn't hurt ourselves on the greens was what kept us in it.

Westwood unravelling a little. 8 players within 2.
