EVENT 5 - 400 METERS - Preview
This is going to be one wild event. Half of the field is horrible in this event, and the other half is evenly split between being good and dominating. This is one event where the standing could change dramatically. Interestingly enough - two of the athletes that aren't good in this event include the overall leader (Gunner) and the guy in second (Lesgettham), so the board will undoubtedly bunch at the top. Babson and Eckberg are poor in this event and the injury is going to add to their times, so expect them to finish 15th and 16th overall. Last edited by Breeze : 09-01-2005 at 11:11 AM. |

Darius has been eating his beans. A quick sprint start followed by some extra propulsion will cause the pack to fall back!

Need a good time in the 400 to set me up for day two. 4th place entering it with two weak events gone by is GREAT, now I need to push it here.

EVENT 5 - 400 METERS - Heat 1
The gun sounds on the first heat and the runners start out in a real conservative pace. No one is applying themselves early in this split. Yellope is out in front and his 1st split time is 11.8, good, but he's capable of better. Gonzalez is a couple strides back with Mighty right on his outside hip. Babson's 13.35 time is a full second behind the 7th place runner at the first split. In the second split it looked like Yellope was going to open it up, but he immediately slowed down and his stride has shortened significantly, he may have tweaked a hamstring. At the end of the second Pflaggstettler had flown past Yellope and Gonzalez to take the lead. His split time was 11.85 and his time at the halfway point was 24.05. At the split Yellope was on the inside lane with Lesgettham having closed - running stride-for-stride with him in lane 2. The rest of the runners were tightly bunched except for Babson, who was almost 2 seconds back at this point. At the end of the 3rd split Pflaggstettler was still leading., Followed by Mello who overtook Yellope, who fell to all the way to 7th, and Lesgettham, who's hold on 3rd was precarious. In the last 100 Meters Pflaggstettler kept his solid pace going and his final split time of 12.10 was good enough to win the heat. An awesome final split time of 11.6 by Palmer allowed him to pass Mello, who was able to hold on to 3rd place. Lesgettham seemed to hit a wall and posted a poor 12.3 time in the final 100 meters, allowing Mighty to sneek in a tie him. Gonzalez, who was only strides ahead of Yellope at the end of split 3, had a horrible 4th 100, posting a time of 12.6, but thankfully for him Yellope's injury became to much and he posted an even worse split of 12.75. Babson, nearly walked across the line. Last edited by Breeze : 09-01-2005 at 01:56 PM. |

D'oh, final hundred cost me a chance at a fluke showing. Ah well, going to have to seriously cruise through the hurdles to have a good shot at medalling now.

EVENT 5 - 400 METERS
The second heat start off much differently than the first. At the gun Ivanov and Cat take off and open up a big lead on the rest of the field. Cat's first 100 split is 11.55 and Ivanov's is 11.65. The rest of the group is pretty slow - Elli managed a split of 12.15, but the rest are 12.4 or worse, with injured runners Eckberg and Soldier bringing up the rear. At the end of the second split both Ivanov and Cat slowed down in the 2nd hundred, but both still posted sub 12 second times - and Cat held on to his early lead. Elli also has a sub 12 second split. Gunner and Nights began to pull away from the 2 injured runners and Kappe in this split. In the 3rd 100 meters, Ivanov kicked it into high gear, finishing the distance in 11.55 and taking the lead from Cat - with a total time of 35.15. Cat was .15 back. Elli opened his lead for 3rd place, Nights was 4th, with Gunner a couple strides back. Kappe spot in 6th looks secure because Soldier, who's normally good in this event had a horbile split of 13.75. In the final 100, Ivanov seemed to run out of gas, with about 20 meters left Cat flew by and took the tape. The race of 3rd, 4th and 5th was non-existant as Ellie finished a good .3 ahead of Gunner who was almost .3 ahead of Nights. The final 3 runners, none of which finished in a sub-50 second time, crossed over a full second later - Kappe, Soldier, Eckberg. |

EVENT 5 - 400 METERS - Review
Gunner and Lesgettham had valiant efforts in this event, and despite being poor performers - they were able to finish in the middle of the pack. By avoiding the huge number, they've positioned themselves well for a run at a medal in day 2. The big loser in this event was Yellope. Yellope was 4th coming into this event, which is one of his strengths. Had he not gotten hurt, he undoubted would have climbed into the top 3. All the injured peformers were losers in this event, as they suffered through the 1 lap event and fell way off the pace. Some interesting information: If Yellope hadn't gotten hurt he would have won this event - his time of 49.85 includes a 3 second penalty (because he was injured in leg 2 - it applies to that leg and every subsequent leg). Without the penalty he runs a 46.85. Babson, who is a C card runner, rolled his 2 best outcomes in his column and would have posted a 58.15 without the injury. |

EVENT 6 - 110 METER HURDLES - Preview
Day 2 starts with an event that requires numerous skills to be successful. In this event, we have a few guys who are very good, including Babson and Soldier, but both of them suffered injuries in day one. Getting the night off allowed them to receive treatment which will help, but they still won't be 100%. Pflaggstettler has to hope for a good run, because Gunner and Lesgettham , who sit above him in the standings, are both better than he is in this event. In fact, Lesgettham, Kappe, Elli, and Cat are probably favorites, with Babson and Soldier being wild cards. |

EVENT 6 - 110 METER HURDLES - Heat 1
The runners take their mark, the gun sounds and their off... Pflaggstettler has gotten a terrible start out of the blocks, while Lesgettham is the first to the first hurdle. Lesgettham begins to hit his stride early and is already pulling away from the other runners. Yellope and Mighty are next, but they are so close I can't honestly say who's leading. Gonzalez and Palmer and Babson are a few strides back. Mello, who is extremely fast is having a hard time with his footwork and can't seem to gain any momentum. Pflaggstettler is trailing badly. At the last hurdle Lesgettham has a big lead...but...he clips the hurdle with his heal and lands awkwardly. He doesn't fall, in fact, he's able to regain control quickly, but that bobble cost him a considerable amount of time... At the tape Lesgettham is able to hold off Mighty and Yellope who cross at the same time. Babson hits his stride just past the halfway point and easily pulls away from Gonzalez and Palmer, who finish 5 and 6 respectively. Mello crosses ahead of Pflaggstettler. After the race is over, Lesgettham is observed rubbing his right knee. Looking back at the video it appears he may have twisted it when he stubbled. Last edited by Breeze : 09-02-2005 at 06:23 AM. |

EVENT 6 - 110 METER HURDLES - Heat 2
The gun sounds for the second heat and Kappe, Elli, Cat, Ivanov, Gunner and Soldier explode out of the block quickly establishing themselves. Soldier was the first to the hurdles with Kappe right on his heals. Eckberg and Nights are trailing badly. At the 3rd hurdle one of the event favorites, Elli, fails to clear cleanly and is forced to adjust his steps approaching the 4th hurdle - causing him to lose all his momentum and ruining his technique. At the half way point Kappe overtakes Soldier and Gunner begins to pull away from Ivanov, Cat. At the 8th hurdle Ivanov pulls up dramatically - and begins to fade. Also when Eckberg hits the ground after clearing the 8th hurdle he begins hoping. Appearently the foot injury he suffered in the high jump isn't holding up to the pounding in this event. Kappe pulls away from the others down the stretch and reaches the line first. Soldier is second, Gunner 3rd and Cat 4th. Elli ends up catching up and passing the hobbling Ivanov who finishes 6th and Nights crosses 7th. Eckberg never cleared the 9th hurdle. He ended up sitting on the track, and currently trainers are attending to him. |

EVENT 6 - 110 METER HURDLES - Review
The Decathlon is a grueling event and this one is really starting to take its toll. 6 of the 16 athletes are injured and 1, Eckberg has been forced to withdraw. Lesgettham was on his way to a great time before his injury, he still managed to finish 4th overall in the event even with the stumble. However, Gunner's inpressive effort allowed him to open his lead, and with Lesgettham's injury it will be almost impossible for him to gain ground and in fact, he'll be hard press to hang on to a medal. Kappe's impressive performance allowed him to jump from 10th to 4th while on the other end of the spectrum Night's terrible run dropped him from 4th to 8th. With Yellope, Ivanov , Babson, and Soldier also injured the door is wide open for those still healthy to move up and contend for a medal. |

EVENT 7 - DISCUS - Preview
Pflaggstettler Conservative - an excellent conservative column with scores as high as 169' including one on 36 (5.5%). Still has low end results in the 130s Normal - 23, 24, 27, 37 are over 170' (177' is the highest on a 10 roll)- as are a couple low probability rolls. Most of the rest of the rolls are in the mid 60s Aggressive - a real poor column here. 173' appear to be tops - occuring 4 times. Other than those rolls there are 2 in the upper 160's and the rest are in the mid 150's Lesgettham Conservative - Has the ability to get into the 150' range, if he does though he should feel extremely lucky. Normal - NA Aggressive - NA Yellope Conservative - Not good in this event = very low scores in the conservative column. The bad news - top end roll is 140', good news - it's on the most probable roll of 35. Normal - 155' is the high end, but it's on a 15 and 19 roll - which are next to impossible to hit. Aggressive - NA Palmer Conservative - though he's much better in discus than Yellope - this conservative column looks very familiar. If it's better, it's only slightly better. Normal - Quite a few results over 150' - including high probability rolls of 24, 25, and 36. Aggressive - Can get 168' or 167' - but most of the column is in the low to mid 140s' Mighty Conservative - All has a nice 151' on a 35 in this column. Most of the results are around 131' Normal - 160' on 33 is a nice result. Has quite a few in the upper 150's Aggressive - 168' is the top end on 28. Got 1 other result over 160' and few in the 150s, most are mid 140s Gonzalez Conservative - 4 results over 150' in the conservative column. Normal - 20 of 30 results are better than150', with 5 on the high end of 160' Aggressive - 5 results over 150' with 3 over 160' - high end is 168' Mello Conservative - almost everything falls between 132' to 145' Normal - 13 results over 150' but most fall in the lower probability rolls in the teens. Aggressive - terrible aggressive column. Only 2 results over 160' and the sit on 10 and 12. Most result are in the mid 140s Babson Conservative - A few results are over150', results are widely spread out. Normal - with 18 of 30 results over 150' he should be able to get a decent score here. Needs to avoid the 4 results under 140' Aggressive - NA Kappe Conservative - Widely spread results - too numerous to mention - probable outcome would be in the low 140s Normal - only 1 result over 160', quite a few over 150' Aggressive - 3 results over 160' most in the low to mid 140's Ivanov Conservative - best he can hope for is a 152' - pray for a 17. Normal - NA Aggressive - NA Soldier Conservative - 1 result over 150' - evenly spread with the rest between 130's and 140's Normal - quite a few in the 150's - most in the low 150's Aggressive - NA Gunner Conservative - Can get into the 160's in the conservative column including a 167' on 33 WOW. Normal - 12 results over 170' Aggressive - Has a 183' on 16. It isn't likely he'll get it, but if he does - he could just about wrap this thing up. Elli Conservative - a 150' on 32 is nice and another on 30 doesn't hurt. The rest to routeen. Normal - some over 160' but the most likely are 161' on 30 and 160' on 31. Aggressive - 3 over 160' Most in the 140's Cat Conservative - will be lucky if he gets a 140' roll in this column - if he does it will be because he hits the 149' on 34. Normal - not a bad column for a low end discus performer. could get over 150', also could end up in 126' range Aggressive - 1 shot at bettering 150, with a 156' on 24. 156' is the high end for Cat. Nights Conservative - '164 on 36 and 156' on 35 is real good for a conservative column. Normal - only 1 roll is under 150' - 7 are over 170' - 178' is the high Aggressive - 5 over 170', but 175' is the high in this column. Last edited by Breeze : 09-02-2005 at 12:27 PM. |

If the injury percentages truly are more frequent on normal than aggressive, Darius will go aggressive on his first 2 throws. If he fouls both, then he'll go conservative.

Let Palmer go aggressive in the first toss. and normal in the second toss...(assuming he doesn't get the 167~168 on the first throw.) If he does get that high on the first toss, then pass his othger two attempts.

Normal (If I get close to Max, sit down)
Normal (If I have a close to max result, sit down) Normal (if I've fouled twice, Conservative to get a result)
