Avery John played through the man (Wilhelmsson) with both feet, not once, not twice but three times. A lot of referees in previous World Cups would have sent him off after the first attempt at decapitation. Playing dirty is an accepted way to even the odds a bit but when you get caught out you don't really have much right to protest. Speaking about play acting what about the T&T guy who seemed to have broken his leg at the end of the game only to come back on the pitch and run the length of the field. Clearly Jesus was on the side of the Caribbean side, specifically as their physio. [/sour grapes] |

So what channel is the US match on tomorrow? Now that my dad's out of the Hospital, I'll actually get to watch a match or three...just in time to see the US play their first match. I caught the end of the Sweden - T&T match, and it was amazing to watch. Swedes had a pair of amazingly close shots in the closing minutes that hit the post.

Japan just scored the freak goal of the tournament against Australia.

I think scored is over stating it. Awarded or received as a gift is how I would word it. I will now cheer for the Aussies.

The announcers were going crazy about it being a foul. And what's with all the damn graphics on ESPN2. I counted at least three times where they coverered a third of the screen to tell such important info as the fact that the halftime show was coming up.

Blah, ESPN coverage sucks. Bad announcers, overuse of graphics, damn ticker symbol distracting from game play and covering screen space, and they can't even put the score/clock banner at the top of the screen where it belongs. Complete idiots. If they weren't showing it in HD, I'd be watching the spanish channel. |

I've been watching all the games on Setanta with the German language announcer. Pretty good, they don't say much more than the name of the players and the occasional "wunderbar!", quiet too so they don't drown out the crowd noise.
But the biggest benefit is that there's just the setanta logo in the top corner and the score, not half the screen taken up like ESPN. |

Yeah, that's one thing I notice alot (especially the Balboa announcing team) ... they really like to talk alot. I'm used to the EPL broadcasts where they talk when necessary but aren't afriad of silence. Marcel Balboa (or whatever his name is) seems to take particular pleasure in shouting out every little stupid event and often isn't even correct like saying the guy took a yellow card for dissent when the referee clearly indicated elbowing. |

Maybe ESPN2 HD has different graphics then normal ESPN2? I have seen the score/clock banner at the top the whole time this game has been on.

Yeah, sorry its the HD feed. As near as I can tell, they didn't compensate for the 16:9 format. It leaves this thin band of wasted space above the score/clock banner, and by moving down the score/clock banner it eats up more screen space. Combine that with the scores ticker and a lot of screen space is annoying used up. / end rant. |

3-1 Australia!! A goal in stoppage time as Japan had just taken a defender out.
3 goals in 10 minutes, nice finish.

Okay, all kidding aside, that's an amazing comeback and puts all the pressure on Croatia to either draw against Brazil or beat Japan by 3 goals. And yes, Japan got denied a penalty and playing 11 vs 10 in the additional time. It can't be called justice for the Japanase goal, it wasn't a foul but a blunder by the goalkeeper, plain and simple.

mildly surprised by Eddie Lewis at DL and the choice of a 4-5-1, but I suppose Donovan can always slide up top into a standard 4-4-2 at a moment's notice to apply pressure

IMHO (and not as a Dutch follower) Van Persie was a bit of a disappointment. Van Niesteroy didn't really get a lot of service while he was in the game. Robben was likely the best performance I've seen yet in the WC ... he was all over the place. Him and Drogba probably put in the best peformances in the matches I've seen. Add to that Cole might have been England's best player ... and remind me again why Chelsea can't win the Champions' League?? |
