Supposedly Rich Rod made a late play for the UT job and was turned down largely because he was only a year into his contract at Arizona. The rumor has been that Tennessee is Rich's dream job since his days at WVU and this is twice (if you believe the rumor) that he's missed out on that job because of timing.

I'm not as high on Butch Jones as some of the others here. I see a solid coach that will rub people the wrong way because he acts and coaches like a Rich Rod disciple. I don't see him winning 9-10 games per year in the SEC. I have my doubts that there's a big difference between Jones and Dooley.

With all of the top notch coaches in the conference, somebody is going to get squeezed out. Even a really good coach could finish 3rd in the SEC East/West on a consistent basis. This might be Bielema's fate to be quite honest.

I guess my thought is that, as good as the SEC is, it is also very top heavy. So, if Tennessee banks most of its winnable games (4 OOC games + Vandy/Kentucky/Missouri), they should be 6-1 or 7-0 in most seasons with 4-5 more games against the upper crust (+ the random cross divisional game that will sometimes be Ole Miss or Mississippi).

I think 8-10 wins is a pretty reasonable expectation.

I'd be happy for him in either case. He's a great guy. Met him briefly earlier this season. Was funny then and by all accounts I've heard, a funny guy. But it is Chaney, for future reference.

Haven't seen any official announcements or news from legit websites, but lots of buzz that Tommy Tuberville has accepted the HC job at Cincinnati.

Doesn't make a lot of sense, but maybe he was in trouble for hitting that GA or didn't get along with his AD or something.

That's Whit Babcock. Hopefully he's just on loan. He was associate AD at Mizzou for five years before heading to Cincy. Everyone at Mizzou seems to love him, and I wouldn't doubt that when Mike Alden leaves, Babcock is the first call.

Sounds like the Missouri OC coordinator job is Chaney's to turn down, and that if he comes Darin Hinshaw may be coming along as well. That would be huge.

I really liked Hinshaw as well. He was one of three assistants most UT fans had hoped would be retained. He was our recruiting coordinator. There was a black eye report that was out there somewhere, I could try and find it if you'd like, about our lack of communication or interest in local area talent. There's also been some mummerings about the 'focus' of our recruiting...looking for the diamonds in the rough rather than aggressively pursuing top talent.

I don't know if that was a recruiting coordinator thing or if it was Dooley inspired, but those bits of information began surfacing after Dooley was fired.

Yeah I understand their logic. I just think that I'd rather have guys who see this as a stepping stone job because I know they're going to work their asses off for those three years coaching and recruiting. Which leaves the program in good shape for the next guy coming in.

At the same time they are trying to build the program too. Supposedly the big hurdle in moving to another major conference is improving Nippert Stadium, and bringing in Tuberville who has a proven record than someone like Pat Narduzzi could help in getting financing to make those improvements and try to convince the Big 12 or ACC into adding the school.

I think it says a lot about the Cincy Athletic Department that they were able to act so quickly and under the radar. A lot of these other programs have known for weeks (or months in some cases) that they would need a new coach. Babcock obviously had a short list prepared and knew who would say yes or no.

Cincy doesn't have all the resources in the world, but I'd feel good knowing that someone competent is running things.

I would think that filling Nippert Stadium would also be on the to do list before a bigger conference considered Cincinnati.

Pitt had 15,000-25,000 empty seats in all but 2 home games (ND and WVU) during the last two seasons before they got their ACC invite. They're also pretty notorious for inflating their attendance numbers.

One difference is that Pitt plays in an NFL stadium with a capacity in the 60s.

I'd be willing to bet they're happy they ended up with MacIntyre. The way he's been able to totally turn around a program that was almost dead and in serious APR trouble is very impressive and has to be very encouraging for CU.

I have a feeling that the Badgers will end up going with what they know, aka Bielema, by hiring Joe Rudolph as their next HC. He left with Chryst to Pitt last year.

With all the dumb rumors surrounding Petersen and the unlikelihood that Rhoads will come into play I think Barry will play it on the safer side and go with what he knows like I said already (after Petersen turns an offer down)...I think I'd be happy enough with the move. He's going into a great situation next year with four possible legit QB's to hand the ball off to our nice stable of running backs so it will be tough to not win 8-10 games.

I'm excited to see what happens..

edited to add: Another name to keep an eye out for is Mel Tucker (Jaguars DC). Former Badgers, etc, etc, safe hire again..no big splash either way.

Does Wisconsin have much interest in a Greg Roman or Butch Davis? Those were two names that were starting to pop up at Tennessee.

Looks like Cheney is willing to come to Mizzou if he can bring along Hinshaw. Initially that wasn't an option, but yesterday Josh Henson was offered the Southern Miss OC job. So now, there's a spot open.

I don’t think there is anything that could happen in college football that would shock me more than Riley leaving by choice. I know you should never say never; but I’m going to say never here.

This on the other hand wouldn’t exactly shock me. Banker has made no bones about the fact that he really wants to be a head coach someday, and he’s 56 now so the window will be closing soon. If he went to USC and had a few years of success he could probably parlay that into a pretty decent HC gig. And you don’t really have to read between the lines here to see that he wouldn’t mind at least a phone call from Lane.

The Wisconsin Athletic Department must have truly been blindsided by Bielema leaving. They are pretty high up on the food chain (I'd say comfortable in the second tier) and should have some pretty good choices available. Having gone a week +, makes me think they didn't have (or think they had the need for) a replacement short list.

If there was ever a puff piece, this is it. I can't imagine on any level Saban looks at the Browns with Weeden and goes, "Yeah, it is worth leaving 'Bama to see if I can win a SB with that."

Definitely agree -- he seems to be a lifer and he's a little to old for someone like Barry to hire, too, according to the things that Barry has said. Perhaps it was the DC coming in for a visit? I don't know and there could certainly flights going from there to Wisconsin any given day, so..

I think Barry had a short list and it included Chryst as being one of them... Chryst sounded like he wanted to stay at Pitt so Barry spun it around as "I couldn't possible take him away after just one year.." and call it an honor thing...

I also think Barry's ego is taking a blow here, too. While Wisconsin isn't a top tier school it's a damn good one. But who wants to work for a guy who says "Bret has being using MY gameplan..". I am leaning more and more every day that it's going to be Joe Rudolph, young, great recruiter, former Badger and would follow Barry's "Plan".

Is there any chance that Barry would come back for a year or two (until Chryst as in a better place to come back?)? I think Wisconsin is obviously Chryst's dream job, but Pitt has been through such a whirlwind of coaching changes these last few years that he probably appreciates the opportunity given to him enough to show some loyalty to the kids.

Most inside people say no chance in hell.. the seniors had to convince him to coach the rose bowl at which point Barry paid himself an extra $225,000 to do so. I personally think he absolutely should not. With as good as the team should be next year you need the fan base to ease into the new coach. The situation is a bit different as the job isn't to take over a program in shambles after firing a coach for having their third losing season in a row.

It has also been said by a few that Barry's top three have not been hired elsewhere or turned the job down yet. Petersen was supposedly not one of the three... whether thats hindsight as it seems he will never leave Boise for anything but Oregon? No idea there.

The names that have surfaced as being part of the three are Mel Tucker, diaco, and the third kind of being a wild card at this point. It was rumored barry was in Toledo today..or may have been yesterday, I am not 100% sure.
