Yeah, but it did put a pretty big damper on holiday travel last year. Once stuff went over the "magical" $3 per gallon mark, people got a bit stingier about their driving habits and got rid of a lot of their "extra" driving. Fuel consumption did drop a bit last year when prices got so high.

Refineries are adjusting to more stringent low-sulfur fuel requirements and the phase-out of the gasoline additive MTBE. Apparently these new regulations have required production plants to add additional equipment and processes to the existing setups. With the new equipment, more things can go wrong resulting in more down time as well as the fact that somebody has to pay for what it costs to make it happen.

So the plants are somewhere around 85% output when they are usually around 93% at this time of year. Lower supply and higher demand gives you the current prices at the pump.

And let's not forget closing about 100 refineries, so they can limit the supply to force prices through the roof

It seems impossible to believe that I saw .99 cents/gallon just six years ago in Central Mass.

I've heard the reasons for the increase, but it's difficult to see a 3X increases in those reasons. Are we to assume it won't triple again the next six years?

Shot up 20 cents a few days ago, and shot up another 10 cents from yesterday to today. Sitting at $3.09 down here.

From what I have seen the national average right now is supposed to be at $3.14. $4 gas now predicted by the spring.

Independent truck drivers and small trucking companies are going to start dropping off even more then they already were as deisel is up to $3.60 for a national average.

Someone posted they were getting a windmill installed in their pickup in another thread. That may not be a bad idea.....

Yeah, I blinked and we went up from $3.06 to $3.41.

Ping: Democrats. Taxing Big Oil or removing their subsidies ain't gonna apply downward pressure there, kids. They'll just pass it on as a cost of doing business. Have fun getting railroaded out of office when gas hits $5.50 by the time the 2010 Congressionals roll around.

When I left Wyoming it was about $2.87 or so. Now I'm in Illinois and it's around $3.30, though the difference now is I get gas once every 10 days or so, whereas before I was getting it every other day.

I just paid $800,000 for a drop of Zach Parise's sweet, sweet man juice... and I enjoyed every molecule of it.

I also bought 6.7 gallons of gasoline this morning, but I didn't even look at the price, so I dunno how much that was. With the way prices have been around here lately, it was probably about $3.30/gallon.

man i'm glad i take a train in to work and can walk or bike both ways. i rarely need to fill the car with gas, as I drive maybe...5-6 miles in your average week (which will go down to maybe 2 as the weather gets better and i can turn 2 miles of it into walks)
