Yep, Markus is on it as we speak...
It looks like it was an after trading-deadline deal. Hard to tell from the info listed, but it's my thinking that perhaps another team tried to claim him and the Yankees may have pulled back the claim, yet the deal still went through and he was sent to the Cubs as well. Purely conjecture on my part, but Markus is looking at it now. Thanks for picking this one up, guys -Craig |

I like checking the stats to see what certain ratings produce.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks as if movement and control seem way more important than stuff. I was just looking through the leader boards and I saw a bunch of guys with low stuff and high movement and control completely dominating. I thought stuff was the major factor for determining Ks, which is big in DIPS? I may be off here, but most of the guys with high K/9IP have mediocre ERAs (most likely due to some having avg. control). What are your thought on this. (It just amazed me that the current L2 leader in your league had a stuff in the 30s). |

I think what the bigger problem is...why was this guy put on waivers in the first place? He was still a very good player before he became a dupe. What would the possible reasons be?
And TRO...yeah, I know. But this one's too serious to release with this bug. Just one of these suckers negate the record books. |

Well, not an after trading deadline deal then. Probably the Yanks tried to send him to the minors and he didn't have any options. Hard to tell, however, since he was one of those guys created when the league was created. |

Back to another discussion:
I changed some settings on my laptop, and sim speed increased quite a bit. I averaged a little under 17 minutes per season with a 30-team, MLB-style league. (P4,512Meg,2.4MHz)

I think it would be good knowledge to know why AI teams put players on waivers, especially players like Bassett. While his average wasn't good, it seemed like he was rebounding somewhat, and still would've ended with 35-40 HR and 120-135 RBI...and would have continued that every year. His average may not make him a #3 hitter, but he's definitely a #4.
Why would he get placed on waivers, then? That's what I'd like to know. The logic being presented is faulty (at least in my view...were the Yanks that good to waive this player?) (Don't answer that last question.) |

Gah, Craig beat me to it. I still don't see why they'd try to send him to the minors. But, since I don't have access to the 2006 Yankees roster, I can't give any legitimate reasons.

I thought this as well, however, after taking a closer look - the guy obviously hit a lot of homeruns, but he had a very Jose Bautista-type year in 2005 (.234 avg and the guy just doesn't walk, .273 OBP). He was having a slightly better year in 2006, but his OBP was still < .300 and his OPS was .761 for the year. Only the year AFTER he was claimed did he seem to turn it up a notch. It's probably not something I would have done (I probably would have seen if I could get something back for him via trade), but I can't really fault the AI for this one. Sure this is one of those "gray" areas, but I've had people question the AI keeping a player too long (who eventually did blossom) in a previous thread. Again, gray area, but I don't think this is one where the AI is blatantly wrong. -Craig |

Just trying to get all the info on him out there....
He was 31 during 2006. Both teams list him as 52/82/20 with 25 range on their year-end ratings reports. From Chicago's report:

Hmmm...first thing I noticed when I loaded the page was that just about every team had a better record on the road than they did at home. Don't know if that's been a trend all along or if 2020 was the exception...but, maybe worth a look.

Ideally they probably should have traded Bassett. My guess is that their were not many takers as he didn't appear to measure up with the typical output of other firstbasemen in the league (he was a 1bmen wasn't he? Oh my memory ). I can understand the AI putting him on waivers only if they wanted to make room for some young studs that were clearly better. Is their a way to find out if that is the case?

Just checked the OOTP5 league I'm in at it is about 30% of the teams have a better road record this particular season and it's even lower for my solo leagues. With Ben's league it's upwards of 65% or so...that's pretty drastic. But, like I said, it could be just this season.

Ok, IF it comes out today, I have a problem! Which game do I play tonight? CM 03/04 or OOTP6. Sometimes, I wish I could clone myself In any case, these previews are getting me very excited (even though I am also disappointed that some things haven't been added such as more specific trading algorithms for rebuilding/championship push.) I'm very excited by the observation that the game seems very stable - of course some bugs will still get through but it doesn't appear like the release will be a disaster in any way.

I'm not so sure home-field advantage is really a big issue in OOTP, unless the AI can figure out what players are best for a particular park.
Therefore, tweaking it may just be an exercise in futility. |

I *think* I have enough server space to upload another league. I've been running a 30-team MLB league on the laptop and it is through 20 seasons. Do y'all want to see another league?

Hey SD...can you tell us about the contract negotiation? Like if loyal guys give a home-team discount or still look for market value? The problem alot of online leagues have is lack of FAs in the pool, being that you can just deal a guy who won't re-sign and the other team gets a clean slate to start negotiating.
I'd love to see a player just say flat out..."I'm testing the market" and not listen to any offers from any team. Edit: I mean extensions. Sorry. Last edited by miked : 04-16-2004 at 11:00 AM. |

Agreed. Are there J.D. Drew/Scott Boras types who haggle for more money? How in-depth are the contract negotiations? Also, unrelated, I know, how is the amateur draft? Do you feel you can learn enough about the players from their stats and scouting reports ?

It is, and what it may be is what I described above: the teams just had a mix of talent that was best for the park it played in. |

Contract extensions don't appear to have changed much from OOTP5's last patches, other than what impacts their salary demands.
Also, I haven't "played" the game enough to have a feel for that. To get a strong feel for something like this is going to require running through at least 10-15 free agency periods, I would think.

Here's a little request...wondering if it's possible to include high school/college stats on a player card after he's drafted? Nice to see if you are dealing for a youngster especially if you are playing without ratings.
May not be the right place to post this...but, seems to me that Markus is either paying close attention to this thread or Ben has an open line to him. |

SkyDog,
the one thing (since you seem to have more influence than any of us over at the OOTP boardS) that would be far more relevant than WHIP (which is not really that useful a stat, especially with the DIPS engine) would be HR allowed in the history books for a pitcher. DIPS aruges that most pitchers has little or control on BIP except HR. AS such, It would make evaluating minor league (and major league) evaluation a lot easier if HR were tracked- hell, they're far more important than crap like Wins or Losses, but I know Im an extreme stathead on those last 2.. |

Our forum record was set on the TPF release night, actually. This was primarily because both the .400 boards and OOTP Development boards went down.

So, am I blind or what? I'm looking for a page of some sort that will tell me who's on a team's 40-man roster. I don't want to have to go through every single minor leaguer to see who's on the roster and who's not.
