What is that stat? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that John Wooden had a few better six-year spans.

They give teams too many time outs
Makes end of games hard to watch.

Yeah, I think if you just give teams 3 time outs per half you would usually end up with two at the end rather than at least three most times.

Or two per half with one carry-over.

I check my FB and see State fans already complaining about the refs. Yep, that sounds about right.

Sorry...wasn't percentage. Wiki lists is as the best six year record of any coach in D1 hoops history...I'm assuming they mean wins?

A look at the numbers for Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self - men's college basketball - ESPN

Yep, it was most wins over a 6 year span.

If that's the standard it looks like Wooden only had 175, though the 175-5 record and 6 titles looks a little more impressive that Self's run.

Are they? It's not like college football where one loss in the non conference games can put you out of contention, playing a decent slate of opponents actually helps teams.

Wonder if Alford's whiny little ass will cry about the Pac 12 tournament being in Vegas, too.

Agreed. UCLA fans are rather unimpressed at the moment. I'll have more to comment on later when I'm not posting from my phone, about this hire and about how UCLA's awful AD handled the search and the PR for it.

Until then, I would love to hear opinions from tarcone, Kodos, Johnny and any other Iowa, Indiana, and B1G fans on Alford and his abilities as a coach, and also on why he failed at Iowa.

Selfishly, I'm a little worried about recruit Aaron Gordon now. He was choosing between Washington and Arizona and was supposedly all set to commit to AZ next week. But, he's a big Alford fan and UCLA could come in during the last minute and swipe him now.

I have to say, as an UNLV fan, I'm loving this hire. Should be able to keep our UCLA transfer train rolling now.

That was my first thought too. I've heard the talk that its already a done deal to Arizona but this makes things more interesting...

But definitely not at my beloved U of I.

Should have hired Kareem!

At least UCLA got somebody to be their coach. Minnesota can't get someone who can claim it to be their alma mater.

I'll agree with what the other Big Ten guys are saying about Alford. I was never really impressed with what he did, was able to do at Iowa. I do remember not wanting him to become the head coach at IU when the spot was open, twice, a few years back.

This article says the same, although it is the most positive write-up overall that I've seen on the announcement so far.

Uh oh! I don't know how those California AAU coaches will feel about the coach's son taking up one of UCLA's scholarships. I've heard those guys are pretty hard to please.

So, I haven't seen this stuff in this thread - apologize if I missed it.

1.) 3 days ago, Alford signed 10 year, $20 extension at New Mexico
2.) Buyout was 150K, was set to move up to 1 million (still pretty low, if you want to make it sting to take your guy) on Monday

LOL, 20 million. Which is pretty serious scratch for New Mexico, but obviously won't stack up to what UCLA would pay when motivated for a candidate.

I love some of the comments on the Georgetown boards. They are livid and apoplectic that not only did Syracuse make it to the Final Four but on their floor too. Such crybaby losers.
