The FIFA needs to make some major changes for the next World Cup, from officiating to these penalty kick shootouts.

We play real sports...

Plus, we know how to celebrate. The Italian team looks weird the way they are celebrating.

I doubt the PK thing will change, but the officiating NEEDS to change.

Zidane was, I think, a shoo-in for the player of the cup had he not lost his head. Zidane taking that instead of Trezuguet...? Hate to see that as the ending.

That said, congratulations to Italy.

what was the rule like 30 years ago for the final? did they simply keep playing until someone scored?

Henry just coming up short this year... both in the Champions League and World Cup.

I hate to see Italy win. It proves that whining, diving, and instigating really can win World Cups!

You know, I wanted to make an NBA reference here but there are just so damn many (Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, etc).

I think Golden Goal would be a bad idea. The players are falling over on the pitch from fatigue. The thing could never end if you went strictly Golden Goal.

Oh, and just so you guys know, they didn't show a replay of the Zidane headbutt on the screen. So the crowd thought the redcard to Zidane was unwarranted.

That's why they kept on rooting for France and booed Italy.

Don't see why it would make a difference, I was still rooting for France afterwords.

I'm sure Materazzi deserved it.

Trezuguet still would have taken a penalty (in Henry's spot). Zidane probably would take it instead of another midfielder.

I'm not deciding on Zidane's head butt until I learn what Materrazzi said. The players were kind of jawing, but nothing serious. Then Zidane started to run, but stopped shot and plowed into Materrazzi. I'm thinking a racial slur may have been in the mix to make someone change their action that quickly.

The commentators said that the replay was shown. But O'Brien and Babola are idiots. I thought the AR called over the head ref a little late on the red card. There was no doubt it was a stupid thing to do and I have no clue why he lost his temper. The Italian guy did have him a tidy twister right before the incident. But tits are a small thing to give up for a WC Championship.

By the way, does Henry suck at taking PK's?

The refs are in a no win situation - they are marked by FIFA and pretty much have to do what they are told. Four of the best refereeing performances were in the last four games (2x SF, 3rd/4th place, and final). As well as being theoretically the top referees, they all knew that these games were their last of the tournament, and could therefore apply comon sense as well as the laws, as being marked down for doing so wouldn't affect their cahnces of a future game.

Unsurprisingly, cards were down, generally diving/cheating was down, and the games flowed a lot better for it.

FIFA do have a lot to answer for on this side. Unfortunately the penalties ending has proven to be the best option other than a full replay, which used to happen in the good old days...

Or maybe a religious one. Zidane's pretty rooted in his Islamic faith.

So wait 10 minutes and settle it that way. The guy literally let his entire country down. But based on how this has happened before with him, I'm guessing it wasn't a slur of any kind.

Yeah, that's another possibility. I don't see why Zidane would run up ahead and then suddenly wheel around and head butt him if it was just normal stuff.

Absorbing game, which was a shame because the 1st half was very promising. For some reason, after being positive in the SF and 1st half, Italy reverted to type and went into their shell from half time on, and the French probably edged the game overall IMO.

The ref got pretty much everything right today - even some of the debatable corner/goal kick/throw in/PK calls were proven to be right on replay.

And he had no option on Zidane - don't know what happened there: like someone said above seemed to be a nipple pinch, but he was smiling afterwards, then snapped. Would love to know what Materazzi said, because that has to be the all time greatest trash talk. Shame that he had to end his career that way.

The fans didn't get to see the incident, which was why there were boos: given their early tournament behaviour Italy probably deserved the catcalls, but in the last two games they've been pretty good to be fair.

From an English point of view it's tough, as I didn't see any one fantastic team this year, and we might not get a better opportunity than that which we managed to blow.

But congrats to the Italians, now the most successful European WC side.

Henry is actually quite good at them, and he takes them a fair amount for Arsenal. The more shocking taker was Trezegeut, who I predicted would miss before he actually did. He's done it before (see 2003 Champs League final).

Copa America happens next year, but Euro's are probably more similar purely because of the number of countries in Europe.

That's one way of looking at it. Another is that there were no top class teams and England were still not even remotely challengers, so maybe the English over-rate their own players.

"Golden Generation of English football" my ass. Rio should shut up and pay respect to the real Golden Generation, the ones that actually won in '66 and challenged in '70.

Don't get me wrong, we are/were not a great team either: just that even if we are in four years time, chances are that at least one or two others will be as well - there can't be the same level of comparative mediocrity next time can there?

I thought it was pretty cool seeing all of those people in Boston. Did anyone notice all the Italian flags the first couple of times they went to that shot? I thought it was a neutral crowd, but at the end all of the Italian flags were out.

A couple of other things that bothered me today: the only classless thing about the Italians today was the celebrations between Zambrotta going up and Cannavaro lifting the trophy. But I guess they had just won the World Cup

And they were saying that Zidane wasn't allowed to go back onto the field to collect a medal/trophy regardless - this is a bit harsh isn't it? Whether he'd have wanted to is another thing, but as they let Saha be up there, who was suspended, surely Zidane should have been as well? If a player had been sent off in the SF I reckon he would have been allowed up, so just seems petty for the sake of it to me.

I heard them say that too, but at the end they showed footage fo Zidane plodding down the stairs with his loser's medal in hand. Maybe they made him go up after everybody else?

Strange thing about Zidane is that last season (or the one before?) one of the Real Madrid games had 15 cameras trained on him to admire his mastery from different angles, and he got sent on for punching somebody. Doesn't seem to show his best sometimes when the spotlight is on him

I bet he comes back somewhere next season, won't want to go out like that.

But who picked Boston? You'd find a much larger Italian crowd in virutally any borough of New York City.

I don't necessarily disagree, but Boston's Italian fandom is surprisingly large. Maybe Boston was easier to get to a place where tons of people would be watching and supporting Italy? Or maybe it's the fact that Boston is just awesome.

Also, having a big square with a massive TV screen in front of (I assume it was) City Hall is quite a picture.

They tried doing live coverage from Times Square during some of the earlier games, but it was just embarassing. They'd do main squares from other major cities and they would be jammed, then they cut for Times Square where there'd be a handful of fans and a few commuters/tourists trying to see what was going on.

Maybe they picked Boston cause they knew there would he an event there that a crowd would turn up at?
