That sucks. Was pulling for Germany all tournament. Great game. Germany had their chances. Schneider blasting it just over the bar was the best chance. Really thought the Italians faking injuries to stop German counterattacks was pathetic and poor sportmanship at its worst. Just can't cheer for them after that. Amazing game winner. Came as a complete shock because I was already set for penalties. Can't really blame Germany defense on that one. Schweinsteiger probably should have stuck with Grosso, but that goal was all Pirlo. Everyone thought he was going to shoot, and hence the Germans all ran out to him to close him down/block the shot, including Schweinsteiger. Then Pirlo makes a great pass, and then a wonderful curling shot. With all the critique of the German defense before and during the tournament, I'd still have to say they outperformed 95% of the other teams' defenders. Got a young team, so I think German will be primed for Euro 2008. Hopefully, Klinsmann stays on.

All in all, even game with Italians showing a little more offensive imagination (and I mean that in more ways than one).

Let's go France . I've been pulling for France since they beat Spain. I'd love to see Zidane go out on top. He's an all time great who deserves a final hurrah... and they knocked off the Brazilians, who played like the trophy was supposed to be gifted to them, so yay for the French!

Faking injuries and diving????
I only saw one player fake getting hit in the face and that was Totti, who is a disgrace. Other than that the injuries seemed legit. Grosso gets a knee to the head; Perrotta almost gets his head taken off by Lehmann, to name a few. I didn’t see much if any diving by either team.

The BBC commentaries are praising the game and the Italians for their play in the World Cup.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...06/5150248.stm

Espn seems to think it was just a big diving event lead by Germany's Michael Ballack.

It was the best game of the World Cup with the players giving it their all and the referee letting them play. We need more soccer games like this.

Italians always just edged the game for me - more skilful generally, more composed. Fantastic stuff.

Fully agreed. And the referee was excellent as well. Let's hope for the same type of game/atmosphere today.

If the final ends up being Portugal vs. Italy, then we need to get more officials.

I think the East German judge and the Russian judge might be a little shady so if they are giving out 9.5's while other judges are handing out 8.9's then you know something is up.

Mazeratti had two pretty blantant dives, Totti was diving, and I thought Grosso was going to rip the hair out of his head after he got hit.

Italy's team is a disgrace.

Italy's team was a disgrace against the US team, and a couple of other games. However last night they weren't too bad, and only Totti rivalled Ballack or Podolski. I'm pissed they beat the US.

Fixed. BTW nothing wrong with that - I want France to beat Portugal tonihgt for exactly the same reasons

To be fair to Grosso, he was kneed in the back of the head. That has to hurt like a bitch!

I can't believe he could continue - and score the winning goal with such a serious head wound. You saw that he was obviously demented - he was trying to pull his own hair out!

Woot. Goal Zidane.

Can't wait to see the Portuguese diving team show off their skills any time they get in the box from here on out.

The radio folks seemed to imply that Henry dove or at least sold the foul more than warrented. How true is that look at the foul?

Player clearly kicked out his left leg and hit Henry's leg as he was about to go past him.

One view - the first - of Henry's looked like it was a dive, but other angles show the defender clearly got his leg.

Ronaldo's attempt was a pretty clear dive, wow.

on that note, here's the BBC update right after Zidane's goal:
Quote:
36 mins: Portugal's players and fans protest as a penalty claim falls on deaf ears. Cristiano Ronaldo went down like the proverbial swallow as he attempted to climb high and get on the end of Luis Figo's cross. A good deccision by the referee despite the close attention afforded him by Willy Sagnol.

heh

France suffered in that first half.

Portugal really plays some quick and nice football, if only they stopped diving now and then to try and actually score some goals, they would probably be ahead tonight.

Portugal seemed like a bunch of babies. I saw at least 3 definite dives in the second half. It also seemed like the ref was missing some moderately obvious calls to both sides. Perhaps he was just gunshy after the US-ITA debacle.

Thank the football gods for ending the Portugese 'dreams'. What a disgrace to the game they are. Figo even managed to hand Saha a yellow card to miss the final after Rooneying him.

Amen!

The funniest moment was on a Portuguese cross where both portuguese players in the box dove in different directions without a defender in sight. I thought I was watching some bowling on ESPN there for a second!
