Good game so far, fair bit of open space.

Good to see the referees finally calling the games properly too, no yellow cards for 75% of the tackles.

Sorry I missed the game, I always seem to miss the game where they crash out. Missed the one where their last boy wonder lashed out too.

As long as Portugal don't win, I'll be happy now.

Wow. Yeah, blame Ronaldo for the loss. He didn't touch Rooney, just ran in to complain to the ref. Doesn't Rooney have a known temper problem?

The Italian players are a disgrace with their diving. Totti and Matterazi esp. today.

one of their players got a little knee to the head. I thought he was having a seizure. Of course, Ballack should be playing for the Italians. He might have created some chances if he wasn;t so quick to fall.

Noticed:
Not really a man of the match here, no one has looked good.
Lehman needs to work on his distribution, it sucks.
Schneider hasn't been the only problem but he's been useless on the right side of the pitch for Germany.

This is one of the best 0-0 games I've seen, but I think an early goal to really open it up could have turned this into a classic.

I'm glad it's gone to extra time just so I get to watch it for a bit longer

I'm really not looking forward to another shootout. Somebody score a goal.

Gilardino almost followed your order straight away there.

Still got a feeling a Lehman mistake will cost the Germans at some point.

Watching on Setanta, they're running both a German and Italian commentary.

The German commentator is calm, almost monotone, and quiet a good deal of the time. The Italian commentator talks constantly and gets over-excited at even the slightest chance. So national stereotypes are being upheld.

Nice goal!

Surprised Grosso could make that happen though, considering the massive head wound he suffered earlier.

Mine went out from the 85th to the 90th minute. Glad there wasn't a last minute winner, though I did miss Lehman crushing an Italian apparently.

Well, it took until the semi finals but we finally got a proper refereeing performance. IMO, he handled the game excellently, no ticky-tack yellow cards and no whistle every time somebody fell to the floor. A great job of letting the players play and decide the game.

Fantastic game - played in the right spirit, both teams wanted to attack, but there was everything in the game: good attacking, good midfield play, good (excellent) defending and good keeping.

And as someone said above, great refereeing: a couple of Italians and a couple of Germans started rolling around early doors, but no cards, and for the majority of the game there were very little histrionics.

Italians always just edged the game for me - more skilful generally, more composed. Fantastic stuff.

Despite the fact that I was rooting for Germany, I'm happy someone scored a real goal to win this thing. Congrats to Italy and may you lose to France in the final.

Poor Germany . Both sides played well enough to win. And like someone else said above, I guess I'm rooting for France (and Zidane to lift the trophy in his last game).

Does anyone else think the Germans gave up way too much space on the first goal? I mean, I know they were tired but you have to go balls out at the situation.

It's what I mean, most of the game, they looked like that to me. They were sluggish compared to the Italians, and they started to pour it on a little at the end of the match, but other than that, Italy just looked a bit better.

Maybe near the end the Germans were feeling the pace after their exertions in the 120 minutes against Argentina, whereas the Italians were coming off a game against Ukraine where they could take it easy for the last 30 mins.

Before the World Cup one of the main hits on the German team (along with inexperience, and supposedly being a one-man team) was that their defense was big and strong but immobile so unsuited to playing a team that tried to pass the ball around. Maybe it was that coming back to hit them too, they'd not been shown up for a slow defense since the Costa Rica game.

Italy deserved the win though, they had most of the good chances. Now I'll be hoping for a France win tomorrow so we can see Del Piero and Zidane both bow out in a World Cup final. A good stage for two of the best players of the last 10 -12 years, even if Del Piero will probably only be on the field for the very end. If Figo and Ronaldo really are injured, France should be a good bet hopefully.

After the Italy-Australia match I was really hoping that Germany beat Italy by 11 goals to 0.

Oh well, go France/Portugal - at least Italy making the final has given me a team to root against.

The "last 10-12 years" bit is also pretty vague - are we talking about players who've been around the whole time? most of the time? some of the time?

In any case, I wouldn't rate Del Piero as one of the best, at least not for most definitions of 'best'. Very good, yes, but his club teams have usually revolved around someone else (Zidane/Nedved), til tonight his record in big games was fairly poor, and apart from maybe 97-98 he never really had a season where he was one of the best in the world.

I totally agree with you. He should be. Unless the referee tomorrow does a better job, Armando Archundia should be on the pitch on Sunday.

I wonder how the French will be affected by their yellow card situation. Six French players would miss the final if they got a yellow card tomorrow. Common sense says that you have to play for the semi final before you can worry about the finals and in the heat of the game, a guy may take a card if it will prevent a goal. But you have to think that it would be in the back of the minds of those players.

He's not on a level with Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo etc, but he's definitely in a fairly small bracket at the top. You don't get 70+ caps for Italy and be a regular for Juve for 13 years if you're not top class.

I'd tend to reserve 'the best of X' for guys who had better peaks - Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, etc - but I don't think we're really disagreeing here. Never the best in the world at his position, but he was in the top 5-10 for over a decade and that's still very impressive. Just depends how broad your definition of 'best' is.

I'd agree with you, but rain would simply give the Italien diving team a much better chance to impress the judges with their full twist double somersault with a back 180 lunge.
