Yeah, that would have been quite a chain reaction of a thread post, to be sure.

The next logical step.

States’ Lawmakers Turn Attention to the Dangers of Distracted Pedestrians

Quote:
In New York, a bill is pending in the legislature’s transportation committee that would ban the use of mobile phones, iPods or other electronic devices while crossing streets — runners and other exercisers included. Legislation pending in Oregon would restrict bicyclists from using mobile phones and music players, and a Virginia bill would keep such riders from using a “hand-held communication device.”

I knew that was going to be posted when I saw this thread bumped.

Kentucky's anti-texting law went into effect January 1. For those who llike to read texts/emails while you drive, I suggest you check out DriveSafe.ly. I've used it for a few months and it's works well. I found it on sale for like $1 over the holidays so i bought the full program, which apparently includes the ability to respond to texts/emails, but I haven't tried it out. The free version provides limited functionality (it limits the number of words it will read per email/text to 25, for instance).

Coolest thing about it is I have it activated by bluetooth, so when I start the car, it automatically goes on, and when I leave the car, it shuts off. That way you aren't embarrassed to have a text read out loud in public because you forgot to manually turn it off.

They refer to pedestrians but keep talking about runners and other exercisers. Is that supposed to mean when I'm walking from the subway to my office I can't be listening to my ipod?

Okay, well NYC can start fining me for listening to music when they fix a bigger problem with pedestrians being at risk, as I've seen evidence of this myself about 30% of the time I'm crossing streets:

Give a friendly wave while you cross the street! It's only polite.

I thought it meant you were supposed to hi-5 the people coming from the opposite direction. No wonder I was getting dirty looks.

I thought it meant you can cross, but watch for vehicles turning right on red.
