Low tar cigarettes have holes in the filter so that when someone puffs on one of these cigarettes they breathe in more air than someone smoking a normal cigarette with no holes or smaller holes in the filter. 10-15mg of tar is breathed in with a normal cigarette compared to 5mg of tar breathed in with low tar cigarettes.

Sorry...may need to rephrase the question...it is possible to take in the same amount of tar with a low tar cigarette as a normal cigarette...why do low tar cigarettes generally allow a person to take in less tar?
