Man, I didn't realize they traded up. This is a bad move when you look at the deal:
Quote:
Seahawks get: Carolina's second-round pick (No. 45 overall) and selected LB Lofa Tatupu.
Panthers get: Seattle's second-round (No. 54) and its two fourth-round picks (Nos. 121 and 126).

The Vikes would have taken him before the Jets second pick, they wanted him pretty bad.

And the funny thing on those picks: Pollack (DE/OLB) is like having another coach on the field, whereas Thurman (who at MLB should be a leader) is more of pure instinct player. I doubt he'll ever grow to be calling audibles on the field.

Brutal pick - they probably could have had him in round 3.

Yeah, here's what Scouts.INC has on him:

Quote:
Strengths: He has adequate-to-good height and is well-built. Has excellent top-end speed, especially for his size. Has good quickness and is fluid for his size. Has a lot of upside as a developmental prospect. He has developed into a solid open field tackler. He lacks ideal upper body strength but is well built and has some hip explosion as a tackler. Is willing to support the run.

Weaknesses: Is inexperienced at the DC position but fits better at DC in the NFL than he does at DS. Level of competition is a concern. He's unpolished and needs a lot of technique work. Footwork is poor, he doesn't take consistently sound angles and he needs to improve his ability to press WR's at the LOS. He doesn't possess great ball skills and he seems to have a difficult time finding the ball over his shoulder. Lacks ideal strength. Mental capacity is a concern; he had trouble academically and also scored poorly on the Wonderlic Test (14).

He's 6-foot, 206 and ran a 4.39 40. So, he has the tools to play corner or safety. We'll see, but that 14 wonderlick doesn't impress me much.

I agree that Collins was a terrible pick for GB. I think Jacksonville is having the best draft day of the later teams so far. I love their first two picks.

The statement that he tackles well and supports the run will be a nice change from Sharper if he does play safety.

dola, Gil Brandt seems to like the pick:

Quote:
Collins played safety but can play corner, which he did last year. He's very fast with very good speed and size. He's a small-college player with big-time potential

William and Mary is a helluva a football team. I heard they made it to the Div I-AA quarters last season. Just ask wademoore.

Nah, I've got nothing. I'm still pissed that the Vikes don't have a kicker.

I agree on the odds. As to McKenzie, did you notice he isn't reporting and is threatening to hold out in New Orleans if he doesn't get more money?

I'm not all that sad to see his drama leave the team. Plus, Collins was taken with the pick GB got from New Orleans

I doubt is was the Wonderlic as much as the background investigations & the character issues.

Meanwhile, as a side note to kinda humanize the draft a little ... here in his hometown, fans gathered on the town square to watch big screen coverage of the draft and (presumably) celebrate his selection. No idea whether he was here or not, I managed to accidentally miss him being picked.

Gil Brandy is still alive. He is on NFL Radio all the time, and actually called the Packers picking Aaron Rodgers about a week ago. I thought no way we would slip that far then, guy picked it right though....

Oh, I know the answer to your question. It seemed like a rhetorical question to me. My "I've got nothing" is in reference to my inability to keep playing the low-competition argument.

I really like both moves by the Jets. Miller was the guy I wanted, and to nab the kicker and him was brilliant.

Well, I have no clue what GB is doing. The just took WR Terrance Murphy

He's a decent value and has nice numbers (6-1, 202, 4.45 40, can return), but this team was 25th in defense last season. Then again, we did have to use our 2nd TE as a WR on two games because of no depth after the top three.

Interesting last few picks

Carolina picks up another RB. It'll be interesting to see Roscoe Parrish in the NFL. Jets get Miller, who in all likely hood dropped because of his arrest.

Maybe they are all being converted to defensive spots. Starting with Rodgers, he goes to DT.

Not sure what is going on, I know Thompson said his style is to choose the best player left on their board and not go for need. That explains it a little, but shit man.........

Yeah, you'd have to think that each player was tops on their board as they had bigger needs. I found him on Scouts.INC and it appears he was the 12th best kick return man (27.2 Ave) in the NCAA last season as well - so this pick makes a little more sense as their return game was brutal in 05:

Quote:
Strengths: Has adequate-to-good size and very good top-end speed. He has fluid hips and is very smooth as a route runner. Shows excellent COD skills and lateral movement. He will make plays in the vertical passing game because of his speed and leaping ability. Will make some spectacular catches and has adequate hands. A legitimate threat after the catch. Has very good speed and an explosive second-gear in the open field. Is dangerous after the catch. Will make defenders miss in space and accelerates out of his cuts. Will run away from most defenders in a foot race. Does not get muscled around by cornerbacks in press coverage. Has good quickness and will get off the LOS quickly. Has adequate height, is well built and strong. Works hard as a blocker and has developed good technique. Plays with leverage, gets into position and works to sustain. Is durable and tough.

Weaknesses: Is still a little bit unpolished as a route runner. Needs to improve his awareness in terms of reading defenses, setting up defenders and getting open against zone coverage. Has vertical speed and playmaking ability but lacks ideal height of a vertical receiver. Still will fight the ball a little bit when trying to pluck on the run. Would be much more dangerous if he learned to snatch on the move without bobbling or fighting the ball.

Overall: Murphy is a former high school quarterback who wasted little time making the adjustment to the wide receiver position in college. He set a school record with 35 receptions as a true freshman in 2001 and he has gotten better each season since with more experience at the position. He finished strong as a senior in 2004 with 56 receptions for 756 yards and three touchdowns despite missing one game because of injury. His reception totals aren't overly impressive because of the system he plays in at Texas A&M, but he has been extremely productive from a comparative standpoint as the team's leading receiver in each of his final three seasons. Murphy also has potential as a return specialist in the NFL, as he finished 12th in the nation with an average of 27.2 yards per kickoff return. Murphy lacks elite size, he has room to improve as an intermediate route runner and he needs to improve his consistency catching the ball on the run. However, he has explosive speed, is a very good athlete and makes things happen with the ball in his hands. Murphy has the potential to develop into a fine No. 2 receiver that can stretch things vertically in the NFL. He also has the potential to become a playmaking kickoff return specialist. In our opinion, Murphy is a good value somewhere between the second and third rounds of the 2005 draft.
