I don't think the key to winning the series is Reggie Sanders, it's going to be if Larry Walker can start to produce. That and getting up on the Stro's early in the game.

WTF has gotten into Chris Burke the past three games? I think he's trying to become a Killer B with the way he's swinging the stick lately...

It was a game of mistakes. Damn Nunez should of had Burke out at third.. the ump made the right call.. which is not always the case when the ball beats the runner.

The ump was squeezing the strikezone again tonight, that's for sure.

When Lidge comes in, I go to bed. j/k but damn he's much easier on the eyes than watching Izzy save a game.

I think Suppan is the key to the series up there in that little league park.

MMP was a pitcher's park this year.

Offensive ratings went from 104 in 2002 and 2003 to 100 in 2004 to 98 this year.

Meanwhile, Busch was a hitter's park.

As for the why have the dropped 3rd strike rule, it's a matter of consistency. To record an out you must either tag a runner, tag a base on a force play, or catch the ball.

Yeah, geez, the strike zone has been about the size of a loaf of bread the past couple nights. It's a testament either to the pitchers skill or hitters impatience that there hasn't been a 20-walk 12-10 game.

Bugs me (obviously) that we're not up 2-0 going to Houston, but I'm not overly worried yet. Game #3 is pivotal (also obviously).

I would say Busch is a hitters park because of the hitters playing in it.

Those hitters play on the road. And the visitors at Busch have hitters, too.

St. Louis both scored and allowed more runs at home than on the road. That's the most basic stat relevant to being a pitcher's or hitter's park and in determining park factors. Schedules should come into play also, of course.

Houston is a different situation. Houston scored 27 more runs at home than on the road this season, but allowed 67 fewer runs at home than on the road.

Injuries are kept very vague this time of the season, how badly they are hurt will be kept under wraps unless they are totally out of the picture. I don't know if you saw the game today, but Clemens is a perfect example, they interviewed Hickey in the dugout and he was asked about Roger's hamstring issue and he said there was no problem, but it was obvious he was feeling some kind of strain.

Son of a B!

We needed to steal this one. That ump behind the plate tonight is an a-hole. You mean to tell me that pitch to Jimmy was called a strike? HA-HA! Then, he tossed him rather quickly.. pretty f'n lame today's refs/umps are.

Oh well, Backe pitched a great game, but Lidge was finally hit... just wish we would have gotten a run off of him and let it go into the bottom of the 9th.

C'mon Carpenter, show why you should be the Cy Young winner!!!

Like the announcers said, he was calling high and tight strikes all game long. Either way, Edmonds should have known better than to cuss out an ump. It's his own fault he got tossed...

Re-watch that pitch, not even close. He was NOT calling that high of a strike, a high strike, yes, an extremely out of the zone high strike, no.

I'm not sure what Edmonds said, but pretty lame by the ump to throw him out in the middle of an NLCS game - especially considering the moment and looking at Edmonds, maybe he talked about the ump's ma-ma, but he didn't get all that heated and was thrown out quite quick.

Not just this game or this sport, umps and refs try to influence game WAY too much nowdays instead of letting the teams decide the outcome.

You guys won, LaRussa was pissed about the strikezone, not sure I saw why he was so angry, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. We are not hitting the ball, Backe is average at best and we should have scored more runs than 1.

Should be a good one tomorrow.

All I can say is Edmonds should have been walking on eggshells. Seriously, his manager had already been tossed for arguing balls and strikes. Did he think he was going to get away with it? Be a pro and just get back into the box...

The dude who replaced Edmonds scared the hell out of me, though. Most parks that would have been gone and it should have been at least a double there, but thank god for Wily's speed.

I guess it's nice to get in those potshots before you're wiped out of the playoffs by a superior Astros team. Backe is more clutch than any of your starters, and he will help guide us toward and through the World Series while you guys are sitting at home crying about "the strike that was".

Five straight K's for Escobar - this guy is just nasty coming out of the pen. I don't remember him being this tough on guys as a starter.

I'm wondering if the Sox will be able to continue to pay Konerko when he hits the market after this season? Given his post season performance, I've got to believe that the price tag has been going up and up ...

Superior? How the hell are the Astros supeior? Backe (and Suppan) was helped by a huge strike zone. The Astros may win this playoff series and they have the upper hand right now but to say that they are superior is downright ridiculous.

The Astros win some games and their fans think they are the second coming of Christ.

I'm saying the best guage of seeing which team is better (adj. of superior), is to look at how they perform head-to-head in games of unquestionable value.

Under that definition, which I think you'd have a hard time arguing isn't fair, the Astros (thus far) have been superior.

Nice little safety net you've built for yourself here.

If the Cards win the series, you can go on talking about they beat the 'Stros straight up when it counted most.

If (when?) they lose lose, you get to go back to them being more successful in the regular season.

Seems like you can't lose out here -- well done.

I'd say you are the one who has built the safety net. The Stro's are hot right now, but to throw out the head to head matchups over the season I think you are not giving any credit to the Cardinals and the record they have put up not only this season but last.

Troubles at home with the little lady?

I don't think that I would call the Astros the superior team. The Cards dominated us in the regular season and had the best record in the league. However, all that people will remember is this series.

It ain't over yet, though. I do feel really good about our chances of winning one game with Petitte, Oswalt, and Clemens pitching. I just hope we don't get overconfident and our bats die the next three games...

Superior? That's laughable.. a team who was so far behind the Cardinals during the season - that THANK GOD for the Wildcard or they'd be at home.

Backe is a medicore pitcher at best, we flat out didn't hit very well and the strikezone was terrible. How about Suppan, is he Mr. Clutch?

This whole "they were better in the regular season" argument flies in the face of most people's reasoning. The Braves are pretty much branded as chokers because they only won one World Series during their 14 year stretch. And the really tired "Well, they're only the Wild Card so you should roll over or stay home"- c'mon, guys, it's been around for a while. This isn't hockey or basketball where half the league makes the playoffs. And ask the Fish or Halos how much it burdens their World Series trophy. This just sounds so bitter and such sour grapes even tho the series isn't even over yet.

EDIT: Tho you are having a field day proving my "most overrated fans" case with this continuous whining. You're being horrible losers, again, for a series that isn't even decided yet.

No, RPI's post was sour and uncalled for. I love people who jump into a playoff discussion AFTER their team is now up 3-1. Where was he when we won the first game?

I'm just saying, the Astros can thank the wildcard - MEANING, don't go off sounding like your team is the "superior" team now that they've won 3 out of 4 games.

Most of you guys are talking like asshats. The Cardinals have had a strong season but have done it with a patchwork lineup due to injuries. The injuries have continued through the playoffs, with Sanders, Walker, and Nunez wounded and Rolen and one of our key relievers out. Who we have left have hit poorly, except mainly for Pujols.

The Astros are grooving and have pitched well. Are they better right now? Probably. If we were healthier it'd be a different story. Are they "superior?" I don't think so.
