Hoopsguy, I definitely dropped the ball when I hired Ralph Snowden to coach at Heights. They must not be getting the recruits they need. I have toyed with the idea of possibly taking control of some of the hiring and firing of assistant coaches as well. I know I should leave it up to the AI head coach to do so, but I think Ralph is a better coach than he is showing.
As for Northwest, you have had some tough luck OOC. Playing 3 top 10 teams at some point in the season, and losing all of them fairly close, makes that 13-9 record seem worse than it really is. On a bright note, your strength of schedule should be quite high. I've seen some crazy things in the GWAL. North may have a 2 game lead right now, but February is when things seem to shift the most. |

The fact that we have 3 teams on the NCAA Bubble as we enter February makes me giddy. And with North a definite in at the moment, this only bodes well for our conference. |

Here's a look at the final standings for the 2011-2012 season
Code:
North won the GWAL with relative ease, even after a 3 game losing streak in the middle of the month. It was a congested mess in the middle, with 4 teams going 9-7. The bottom third has 2 teams that should never, ever be there, no way, no how. And then there is West. Ugh! They are definitely gone from the GWAL after the season. Wichita Northwest (Chris Prewitt) was hammered by North to start February, and also had losses to Kapaun and Carroll, but rebounded nicely to finish tied for third in the conference. Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) has one thing that will really look good on their postseason resume: they were the only GWAL team to sweep North this season, winning both games. However, a 24 point loss to Heights (which normally wouldn't be a bad thing if Heights was playing like they should be) is a mark that they didn't need. Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) also had a 3 game losing streak in February, to Northwest, North, and East. 2 of the losses are forgivable in the tough GWAL, but the loss to East may keep them out of the big dance. |

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 9-23, 5-13 CAA, 11th. It was not a great season for Charlie, as his team struggled all year. Their only win in February was against James Madison, they lost their other 8 games in the month.
Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 19-11, 10-8 MVC, 5th. It was an average month for February, not great by any means. They did lose to Bradley, a team they should have handled, but they won all the games they should have won. They also beat Wichita West in a non-conference game to start the month of Febraury. Lafayette (Shane Kormelink) -- 26-5, 13-1 Patriot, 1st. What a season for Shane and Lafayette, who had their unbeaten conference run ended by a 10 win Army team. Ouch, what could have been. Either way, Lafayette is going to the postseason, and by all rights should have an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament if they don't win the Patriot Tournament. Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 16-14, 10-6 WAC, T-1st. Hawaii was in a 3 way tie for first in the WAC at 10-6, which shows you how down of a year it was in the conference. They could have won the conference outright, but lost their final 2 games to Fresno State and Utah State. It looks as if they'll be the second seed in the WAC tournament. |

2017 GWAL Championship
(1) Wichita North beats (2) Bishop Carroll 72-55 to win the GWAL postseason title. With a #13 ranking, North is a lock for the NCAA Tournament. In my opinion, Southeast should be dancing too, but we already know the selection committee likes to screw us, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Redskins are the only GWAL school to get in. Northwest and Kapaun should be locks for the NIT, and Bishop Carroll and South have a chance to make the CIT, maybe the CBI, but it's iffy. |

CAA Tournament
Georgia State opened the tournament by upsetting (6) George Mason 65-57. Then in the Quarterfinals they beat (3) Hofstra 77-72. Their run and most likely their season ended in the semifinals with a 78-70 loss to (2) UNC Wilmington. MVC Tournament Creighton had a quick end to their MVC tournament appearance, as they were beaten 69-51 in the Quarterfinals by (4) Bradley. They probably won't be dancing this year, but an NIT berth is not out of the equation. Patriot Tournament Lafayette beat (8) Navy 64-56 in the quarterfinals, then beat (5) Colgate 75-64 in the semifinals. They then lost to (2) Holy Cross 70-56 in the Patriot Championship. They should be at least in the running for an at-large berth to the big dance, but if not, as the regular season winner of the Patriot League, they are guaranteed a spot in the NIT. WAC Tournament Hawaii missed a golden opportunity as they lost in the quarterfinals to (7) Nevada, 95-84. Unfortunately that 16-15 record may keep them home for the postseason. Other Teams and Coaches of Interest Clemson (Shane Dreiling) -- The Tigers finished the regular season with a 24-7 record, 12-4 in the ACC, and a #16 record. In the ACC Tournament, they lost in the Quarterfinals to (5) Duke 68-63. Oklahoma (Marty Frankamp) -- The Sooners finished ranked 8th in the nation with a 26-7 record, 11-5 in the Big Twelve. In the Big 12 Tournament, they beat (6) Missouri 80-63 in the quarterfinals, and lost to (2) Kansas 73-64 in the semifinals. Mitch Linn (Memphis) -- Memphis finished ranked 7th in the nation, with a 27-5 record, 14-2 in Conference USA. In the Conference USA Tournament, they beat (8) Marshall 63-46, then were upset by (5) Rice 65-55 in the semifinals. James Cole (BYU) -- BYU was 22-9 overall, and 12-4 in the MWC. In the MWC Tournament, the Cougars beat (8) Colorado State 67-59 in the quarterfinals, then lost in the semifinals 82-65 to (5) Utah. Bryan Chadwick (Arizona) -- It was a rough year for the Wildcats, who were just 18-13 overall, and 8-10 in conference play. In the Pac Ten tournament, they lost to (4) California 78-66 in the quarterfinals. Ryan Hujing (Arkansas) -- It was a slightly better year for Ryan, but the Hogs still finished 10-19 and 5-11 in conference. In the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals, they played (5) Tennessee tough, but lost 95-89. |

Wichita South is the #1 seed in the CBI, and they'll host (16) Florida Atlantic in the First Round. Favin Anderson from Creighton was national freshman of the year, while Chris Porter from Wichita North was national coach of the year. Outstanding for him! Let's look at the GWAL Awards.
Code:
Georgia State put 2 on the All-Freshman team and had 1 on the All-CAA Second Team. Creighton had 1 on the All-MVC First Team, 2 on the All-MVC Second Team, and 2 on the All-MVC Freshman Team. Shane Kormelink won the Patriot League Coach of the Year. In addition, Lafayette put 3 on the All-Patriot First team, 1 on the Second Team, and 1 on the All-Freshman Team. Hawaii had 2 on the All-WAC First Team and 1 on the All-Freshman Team |

Nice to see 2 of our schools pick up 5 star recruits. A lot of the schools picked up 3 star recruits, then we have South and East. At least South did get a recruit. Georgia State had the best recruiting class in the CAA, and 82rd best in the nation. Creighton had the 60th best class in the nation, and top class in the MVC. Lafayette didn't do so well recruiting wise this year, as only Navy had a worse recruiting class in the Patriot League. They were 327th overall, I don't think it'll matter though. I have a feeling Shane Kormelink will be moving on to bigger, better things. Hawaii had the 88th best class in the WAC, good for 5th best in the conference. |

There was no conference movement again this year, so I'm making my own. Wichita West and Wichita South are getting their wish and are leaving the GWAL. I am keeping Kapaun in the GWAL because they have had a couple promising seasons in a row, and on the chopping block for future removal from the GWAL, as much as I hate to admit it, have to be Wichita East and Wichita Heights, unless they can turn the corner.
They have both accepted bids into the Horizon League, so in turn that means I get to extend bids to 2 Horizon schools. There were some great teams that I was looking at.. Detroit, Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Valapraiso. I decided on Detroit and Valparaiso, since they've had the biggest jumps in prestige. However, Vaparaiso just had their head coach retire, so I have to find a coach when I bring them in. So to recap, South and West are gone from the GWAL, and Detroit and Valparaiso are in. |

This is where I stop for the night, because I am sending a job offer to Shane Kormelink to be the new head coach at Valparaiso. This would get him back in the GWAL and give him a second chance.
So Korme, this is where I need to hear from you. You really have 3 choices, you can stay at Lafayette, or you can take my offer to coach Valparaiso. Or you can take a chance and see what other job offers come your way. Let me know as soon as you can. Thanks. |

Hmm, little worried about losing two 1st Team All-Conference seniors off my team and the better recruits coming in at other schools. Guess I had better do a good job of coaching up the team next season.
Will be interesting to see the prestige numbers for the two incoming Horizon schools. Also, it should be a little easier following the conference and distinguishing between teams when they are not all named "Wichita Directional" |

thanks for the input Hoopsguy. Yeah, I live in a big town that has 9 high schools. Unfortunately for whatever reason they decided to name all the public schools after a direction. I guess Wichita Heights isn't really considered directional, but the others all are. Bishop Carroll and Kapaun Mt. Carmel are catholic schools that are part of the GWAL, but really kinda do their own thing. They are a member in name only and that's it. So it does get confusing. I try to simplify it the best I can.
I will do a little recap on Detroit and Valpo, give some team history and such tonight. I can't progess into next season until I hear back from Korme on what he is going to do. The Valpo job is his if he wants it. I'd like to have him back in the GWAL. Thanks for reading and following along. And.. if you want a second team.. (bbgunn and ntndeacon have a second team outside the GWAL) let me know and I'll make it happen. I enjoy doing this, it's fun to see what happens. |

lol, nice touch on the Dick Vitale impression. I like it.
So this Vico Pettuzi, I take it that you want him to be your second coach? Normally I wouldn't do 2 coaches in the same conference by the same FOFCer, but hey, if that's what you want!! I make no guarantees that the North job will be open though. You would certainly think it would be, but just in case it isn't, if you wanna though Vico into the mix, then give me some information. You know, age, alma mater, coach ratings (or you can just give a skill level between 8 and 11 since that's what all the GWAL coaches are rated), and some backup schools in case the Wichita North job doesn't come open. |

No, Vico Pettuzi was the highest rated recruit in the conference in your recruiting update. Dickie V has to be yelling about up-and-coming players, right?
As far as a second coach, I'll spin one up later tonight with that info. Edit - weird, that was the name I saw when I scrolled down earlier but maybe it was for a different season than the last one? Because looking now, I don't see that name ... just a couple of point guards who would have been "3D MEN - DRIVE, DRAW, AND DISH!" Last edited by hoopsguy : 01-10-2012 at 05:12 PM. |

I found what you were talking about Hoopsguy. Vico Pezzuti was the highest rated recruit for North 2 seasons ago. He should have just completed his freshman year. I would have thought he would have been on the all-freshman team, maybe he was redshirted. I'll have to look. So you're not crazy, and I'm not crazy. That's good to know. lol

This coach movement period may take a while, as it appears several of our FOFcers are going to be offered a job somewhere else. Let's just start with the first round, and that will be it for the night as I wait for responses.
First a bit of bad news, as it seems that a change in conference wasn't enough to save Reggie Taylor, as he was fired as the head coach at Wichita West. In fact, the Pioneers are slapping me in the face by offering their position to both Chris Porter and Rudy Arellano. I implore both coaches not to go to Wichita West, as they were supposed to give Reggie a one year grace period moving to a new conference, but elected not to do so. Both Chris and Rudy were offered the same jobs all the way around. Other schools that offered are: Baylor, Iowa, Butler, Loyola-IL, and Minnesota. I won't even consider Iowa, Minnesota, or Loyola-IL. Loyola is a step down prestige wise, while Iowa and Minnesota are 2 bottom of the pack big ten teams. Butler could be a decent job, but I think that Chris Porter still has a better deal at North, so he's declined all the jobs. As has Rudy, who just confirmed that he was staying at Southeast, for now. Now, muns, you are the only other lucky one that has a decision to make this time around. If you want to start from the bottom, UNC-Asheville has offered you their position. Their record last year was 8-21, their prestige is 12, and it doesn't look like they are going to be good anytime soon. If you want this job, I'll assign you to it. Or, you can wait and see what other offers come up. |

I wouldn't think anything better than that would come up. Might be a few Prestige points better, but nothing special. Might as well take it and get me started.

UNC-Asheville has hired Charlie Shocker as their coach. As for any other job offers... well there just wasn't a lot of good jobs on the market this year. A few lower level schools offered Rudy Arellano and Chris Porter jobs, but nothing worth mentioning.
As for Reggie Taylor, I'm going to see if I can't get him a position in the GWAL as an assistant coach, as nobody has taken a chance on him to be their new head coach. As such, it was not to be, as Reggie declined all offers. His best rating is in scouting anyways, but he's determined to be a head coach again |

just wanted to make sure people were still reading this and still interested. I don't plan on shutting it down, but the interaction will help keep it going.

Nov. 2017 Tournament Wrap-Up
2017 Coaches Invitational Hawaii lost their first round game to (6) Pitt, 81-49, while Wichita Northwest beat (9) Richmond 89-87 in the first round, then lost to (1) Duke 72-54. 2017 GDS Classic Wichita East dropped the ball by losing to (10) Fairfield 70-67 in the first round. Embarassing. 2017 Island Invitational Wichita South lost their first round game to (5) Chattanooga 81-79, then lost in the consolation semifinals to (8) Denver 78-74, but rebounded to beat (7) Fordham in the 7th place game, 71-70. 2017 Philadelphia Invitational Bishop Carroll upset (2) Maryland 84-75 in the first round, then beat (3) Louisville 76-62 in the semifinals. Here are the GWAL Standings after Nov. 2017:
Code:
The good thing is that there are no GWAL teams that have a sub .500 record. The bad news is that there is still 3 months left in the regular season, and we already know how fast things change! UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- Right now they are 0-4, but only lost by 4 to Miss. Valley State and only lost by 8 to Southern Miss. Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- They finish November with a 2-2 record, and they've handed Furman their only loss of the season so far. Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- They are 1-3, with their only other result a 10 point loss to Arkansas, along with the 7th place finish in their tournament. Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- They are 4-2 right now, losing both their games to GWAL teams, Wichita Heights and Wichita Northwest. I guess we can only beat the Deacon in the regular season, not postseason tournaments. Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- They are 2-3 right now, having played 3 teams in the top 50 of the RPI (Wichita North, Pittsburgh, St. Johns) and getting hammered by all of them. Their only wins are aginst an Idaho team that hasn't won a game yet, and Louisiana-Monroe, which is 1-4. Ugh! Here are the top 25 polls as we enter December of 2017: Code:

If you have room for another coach, I'll join the fray.

Definitely, I'd be glad to have another coach. Just give me the info I need, coaches name, location, alma mater, and selected school you want to coach at. Doesn't have to be a GWAL school, can be any school. Will be glad to have you on board. I'll poke you in for next season.
