dola... and I don't really expect this league to be intensely time consuming. If I'm managing it, it's going to be pretty laid-back.

2004 Pre-Season Report
There's good new staff available, so the Redskins make a few hires. First, they steal lead scout Wes Snyder from the Giants, a 37 year old whose personnel decisions have guided New York to two straight playoff appearances. Second, they hire 35 year old Drew Rose as head coach. Rose has no prior NFL experience, but his credentials are incredible, and for a coach that age, they're only going to get better. Both are now the highest paid at their positions, and it is expected that they will earn their hefty salaries. (See how realistic this is? I'm running the Redskins just like Danny Snyder would!) Of course, ticket prices will have to undergo a marginal increase to support these improvements to the franchise. The draft is imported, and, surprisingly, the supplements are less dominant than they were last year. I didn't change the way I modified the draft file any - just appears to be more randomization. It is also likely that TCY produces better talent on its own after it's been running for a season or two. Regardless, it's actually working out like I had hoped - everyone we added should go early, but not necessarily in round 1. A look at the available free agents produces a few surprises. MLB Chris Spielman and SE Terrell Owens are available. Injuries and/or randomization may have reduced their attributes. They're solid looking, but not spectacular. They're the best two free agents available in an otherwise weak pool, and I have ample cap space, so I make some bids. Owens signs for $12.4 million over 4 years. I had the high offer on Spielman through week 6, and then he suddenly signs with Mos Eisley for $2.97 million over 2 years. I pick up a few more DL's and LB's to improve the front 7 a bit, and then move on to the draft. Washington picks 26th, and there's no single player that's going to make the team substantially better, so I decide not to make any deals and just wait to see what's available after the first 25 go. Here's the draft up to that point: Code:
I'd really like to improve the OL, so I take the best available - C Damien Woody from Boston College. In round two, the best fit available is TE Marco Battaglia from Rutgers. Here's how the first two rounds went, following the first 25 picks: Code:
Tough decision in Round 3. FB Rob Konrad and QB Kevin Murray are both still available. I decide to continue to hoard QB talent, and take Murray. QB's are always great trade bait. In Round 4, I select K Lou Groza. In Round 5, I take ILB Shawn Bajorek from Troy State. He's decent, and since I'm running a 3-4, I need all the LB talent I can get. In round 6, I select T Vinny Hampton, also from Troy State. Most would consider him a backup, but he might start for the Redskins this year. My final selection is WR Lincoln Pierce from Ball State. He's awful. So, I have a decision to make prior to training camp regarding my QB situation. I have four on the roster right now: Code:
I can't trade Murray, because I just signed him. That leaves Nielsen and Shuler to trade. Neilsen is obviously worth more on the market, and I don't really need much talent at my 3rd QB unless I'm grooming him for the future, and right now, I don't need a future QB. One other caveat - for some reason, QB George Washington went undrafted. I could theoretically trade Shuler AND Neilsen, and pick up Washington as the #3 guy. Post your thoughts... I'll wait a while before I make my decision. |

I'd be interested in a league like this, but like The Afoci, I'm not sure if I'll have time. Already in the IHOF, and I'm pretty strapped for time as-is.
Yeah, interesting how Stubblefield's FOF Career mirrored that of real life

Alright... I decide to make the trade for Neilsen. He doesn't command as much as I had hoped - I send him along with my 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks next year to Seattle for their 1st round pick next year.
Not the best trade I've ever made, but having two first rounders next season will be nice, and Neilsen will probably enjoy throwing passes to Steve Largent this year. The biggest upside in this trade is that Seattle plays in a brutally tough division, and the draft pick should be a good one. |

I'd go for a league like this, it would be fun.
I say trade Shuler and Neilson and pick up Washington. I mean, he IS a founding father and all. ;- ) Plus you can see if he breaks out.

Smart enough to ride the pine behind Staubach?
He'll probably stay with Dallas until he's a UFA - by then he'll have broken-out (if he's going to) and will be worth big money. |

If Dodger gets hurt at least we'll have a good back-up.
Glad to see that the Cowboys are still going defense in the draft. Wish they would have drafted one of my guys, though...

It's strange, because the Eagles weren't exactly plagued by injuries this year like they have been in the past. Fred Barnett missed three games, but aside from that, everyone was healthy. Cunningham has great attributes on paper, but he only put up a passing rating of 80.7 this year. He threw for 4262 yards, 26TD's, and 19INTs. Byars had 1220 yards rushing; good numbers, but a lot less than the 1700+ he put up the previous two years. His average dropped to 3.4 per carry. They lost 4 games by less than 3 points. Some of the other losses were pretty ugly, though. They were 30th in the league in rushing offense, and 7th in passing offense. They were 27th in rushing defense, and 27th in passing defense. I think that tells the tale - their defense was bad, and it's going to hurt when you can't run the ball and you can't stop the run. |

2004 Wild Card Round Preview
Dallas (-2) at San Francisco The Cowboys are in the playoffs for the first time and are favored to win on the road against the 49ers. WR Lando Calrissian and CB Boba Fett are listed as probable for the game - both players apparently injured in a fight during practice when Calrissian declared that Fett was "bantha fodder." G Larry Allen is also listed as probable. Dallas is led by QB Roger Staubach, who passed for 33 touchdowns this season, and RB Emmitt Smith, who rushed for over 1500 yards and 11 TDs. The 49ers have no injured starters, and are led by the formidable offensive trio of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Roger Craig. Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley lead a solid defense. Houston (-2) at New England Surprise! Houston is in the playoffs again. The two-time defending AFC Champions are two point favorites on the road against the Patriots. QB Warren Moon is listed as probable with a sprained knee. Moon passed for 4442 yards and 32 TD's during the regular season. The Oilers will probably depend on the rushing attack of Earl Campbell, who has carried the ball for 1601 yards. New England will have to overcome the loss of WR Paul Revere, who has a broken clavicle. There is a small chance that Revere could be available in the Super Bowl, if the Patriots make it that far. QB Owen Hunter leads the team, with 4323 yards passing and 33 TDs. The defense is anchored by DE Sam Adams, who had 19.5 sacks in his first fully healthy season. Miami at Cleveland (-4) The Browns are favored to win at home, but they might have to do it without DE Courtney Brown, who is listed as questionable with a strained patellar tendon, and RB Jim Brown, who is listed as probable, but has been fighting severe depression over his failed movie career. The ailment didn't slow him much during the regular season, as he led the NFL with 1946 yards rushing. The Dolphins are going to be without DE Jason Taylor, who has a ruptured achilles from week 2, and WR Mark Clayton, who blew his ACL in week 6. St. Louis at Detroit (-3) The reigning champion St. Louis Maroons will have to start their title defense without DE Brandon Mitchell, and will likely be missing LB Quentin Coryatt. QB Bucky Richardson is listed as probable with a sprained knee. Adding to the lore of the most lopsided trade in league history, WR Haywood Jeffries had a huge year for St. Louis, catching 112 passes for over 1700 yards. The Lions will have to depend heavily upon RB Barry Sanders, who ran for 1309 yards this season, as QB Andre Ware is on IR after suffering from the last of several concussions in week 14. WR Mel Gray, who broke his leg in week 7, is probable for the game. DT Jerry Ball tore his rotator cuff in the last game of the season, and is gone for the rest of the year. |

2004 Wild Card Round Results
Haven't We Seen This Before? Montana Stuns Cowboys in Double OT It was a game for the ages. San Francisco had a 21 point lead late in the 3rd quarter, when the Cowboys came roaring back. Touchdown runs by Jerry Norris and Emmitt Smith, along with a Roger Staubach TD pass to Daryl Johnston capped one of the most exciting comebacks in playoff history. It was all for naught. Forty-niners QB Joe Montana hit RB Roger Craig from 6 yards out for the winning touchdown in double overtime, making the final score 34-28. Dallas Kicker Mark Mosely was 0-3, including a missed 46 yard attempt in the first overtime period. He was not seen boarding the plane with the team back to Texas. Cowboys draft Redskins legend... Redskins legend misses three FG's in playoff game. Coincidence? Emmitt Smith had 27 carries for 126 yards and one touchdown. Roger Staubach was 24-40 for 285 yards, 2 TD's, and 2 INT's - one of which was returned 56 yards for a touchdown. Game MVP Joe Montana went 28-51 for 299 yards, 3 TD's, and one INT. Roger Craig had 84 yards on 36 carries and one rushing TD. More OT Heroics! Moon Leads Oilers In Amazing Comeback Win Over Patriots! In a striking contrast to his fellow Texan counterpart, Houston Kicker Reggie Byerly was 3 for 3, including a 40 yard kick as time expired to cap a 14 point comeback by the Oilers and send the game into overtime. Hoston won the toss in overtime and drove the ball 84 yards to paydirt, capping the drive with an 11 yard pass from Warren Moon to Drew Hill. Game MVP Moon was 27 for 43 for 353 yards, 3 TD's, and one INT. The Patriots did a great job limiting Oilers RB Earl Campbell, holding him to 30 yards on 16 attempts, but they had no solution for the run-and-shoot attack commanded by Moon. New England QB Owen Hunter was 21 for 31 for 290 yards and 1 TD. Patriots RB Van Kangas had 112 yards on 27 carries and one TD. Kicker Randal Sterne was 3 for 3. The final score was 30-24. Even MORE OT Madness! Browns Torpedo Dolphins. With 1:48 left in the game, Miami stretched their lead to 7 with a 55 yard field goal from K Kelvin Chitwood, and the Dolphins appeared poised to do the unthinkable - win a playoff game in the snow. But with just 36 seconds left in regulation, Browns QB Dave Brown capped a heroic late drive and hit RB Jim Brown for a 4 yard touchdown pass to send the game into overtime. Neither team was able to score with three OT posessions, but the Browns finally clinched the victory with a 50 yard field goal by K Wendell Carswell. Miami RB Ricky Williams had 84 yards rushing on 28 carries and one TD. QB Dan Marino was 26-41 for 236 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Cleveland RB Jim Brown had 134 yards on 30 carries. Game MVP QB Dave Brown was 41-59 for 395 yards, 2 TD's, and 1 INT. The final score was 26-23 What? No OT? Maroons Nip Lions In Last Minute - 24-23 With just 34 seconds remaining, the St. Louis Maroons continued their title defense with a three yard pass from Bucky Richardson to Leeland McElroy. The game featured a 66 yard punt return for a touchdown by Lions WR Mel Gray, who was enjoying his first game back from a broken leg. Gray also had 6 catches for 111 yards. Backup Lions QB Tommy Sinclair was 22-34 for 280 yards and 1 TD, but star RB Barry Sanders couldn't take up the slack - rushing for just 22 yards on 13 carries. Game MVP Bucky Richardson was 30-44 for 377 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. McElroy had 63 yards on 17 carries. |

2004 Divisional Round Preview
Cleveland at Jacksonville (-2) Jacksonville will be without MLB Kevin Hardy, and WR Keenan McCardell is listed as probable. QB Vinny Testaverde leads the Jaguars against the Browns, after having thrown for over 5000 yards in the regular season. Houston (-4) at San Diego Somebody had to win the AFC West - this year it was San Diego. With leading rusher Ike Fitzgerald out with a blown ACL, and 6th round pick QB Marc Wilson under center, it doesn't look good for the Chargers against the reigning conference champs. San Francisco at Washington (-4) Washington will miss WR Terrell Owens, who is out with a torn rotator cuff. This diminishes what could have otherwise been a repeat of the Haywood Jeffries drama from last season. Instead, the Redskins head into the game relatively healthy, lead by the league's highest rated QB, Sonny Jurgenson. Cornerback Darrell Green, who led the leage with 12 INT's, hopes to shut down Joe Montana this week. St. Louis at Moe's Tavern (-5) Brawler's QB Al Coholic is listed as probable, but will almost certainly play on Sunday. The Brawlers look strong this season, and the Maroons will have to play their best game of the season to continue their title defense. |

2004 Divisional Round Results
Jaguars Stop Browns In OT Cleveland Kicker Wendell Carswell tied the game with 26 seconds to go with a 29 yard field goal, but Jacksonville won the toss, and then the game, with a 28 yard field goal from Wade Guthrie. Browns RB Jim Brown had a good day, rushing for 132 yards and 2 TDs, but QB Dave Brown was unable to repeat his heroic performance from last week, passing for 192 yards and one interception. Jacksonville RB Fred Taylor ran for 77 yards and 2 TD's, and game MVP Vinny Testaverde was 27 of 35 for 392 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The final score was 27-24 Chargers Shock Oilers 24-10 Written off as the token champions of a weak division, the San Diego Chargers were down by 7 after one quarter, then went on to score 24 unanswered points in a 24-10 rout of the Houston Oilers. Without starting RB Ike Fitzgerald, the Chargers employed a running back by committee, with four backs combining for 120 yards. Unheralded QB Marc Wilson completed 21 of 35 passes for 210 yards and 2 TD's. The Chargers were able to hold Oilers RB Earl Campbell to just 57 yards on 20 carries, and took advantage of two interceptions by QB Warren Moon, who was 21 of 43 for 257 yards and 1 TD. Redskins Offense Sucks Ass. Niners Nuke Washington, 21-10 And it wasn't even as close as the score indicates, folks. The Washington Redskins offense went out and laid an egg, as four Lou Groza field goals were all the scoring the NFC East Champs could muster in their first playoff appearance. RB John Riggins had 62 yards on 22 carries. Sonny Jurgenson led the on-field defacation, with 20 completions on 40 attempts for 254 yards and 3 interceptions - one of which was returned 71 yards for a touchdown. 49ers RB Roger Craig rushed for 84 yards on 23 carries, and QB Joe Montana was 17 of 27 for 214 yards and 2 TDs. Brawlers Beat Up Maroons 31-20 St. Louis jumped to a 17-3 early lead, but when star QB Bucky Richardson left the game with a hyperextended knee late in the second quarter, the Maroons season was officially over. Moe's Tavern dominated the second half. Brawlers RB Seymour Butz rushed for 146 yards on 23 attempts and 2 touchdowns. QB Al Coholoic was 25 of 34 for 319 yards, 2 TD's, and 1 INT. Prior to the injury, Richardson was 8 of 9 for 126 yards and 1 TD. In relief, QB Mario Lacina was 9 of 25 for 73 yards and 1 TD. RB Leeland McElroy ran for 88 yards on 16 carries. |

How the heck did Jacksonville lead the league in scoring and not have a single player in any of the offensive top 10s?!? That has to be some sort of record.

2004 Conference Championship Results
I don't see a point in previewing this round, as each team has already been introduced Jags Smash Cinderella's Pumpkin 35-17 It was 28-0 in the second quarter before Jacksonville finally let up on the Chargers. By then, San Diego was keenly aware that the good luck they had last week against Houston had most certainly run out. Vinny Testaverde completed 21 of 29 passes for 229 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. Fred Taylor had 93 yards on 18 carries. Chargers RB Daryl Sosa gave a valiant effort, most of it in the second half, running for 106 yards on 20 carries and 2 TD's. QB Marc Wilson was 19 of 39 for 191 yards and 2 INTs. Montana's Late Rally Falls Short - Brawlers Beat Niners 27-24 Joe Montana threw two touchdown passes late in the fourth quarter to bring San Franciso within three points of Moe's Tavern, but the Brawlers held on to earn their first trip to the Super Bowl. The 49ers were without RB Roger Craig for most of the game, who sprained a knee ligament in the first quarter. Montana was 24 of 34 for 335 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. He was named the game MVP in the losing effort. Brawlers RB Seymour Butz carried 28 times for 120 yards and 1 TD. Al Coholic was 21 of 30 for 204 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. |

Well, Testaverde did lead the league in passing yards, and was 9th for TD's. His QB rating was 94.6... 11th in the league. Taylor had 1062 yards rushing in 15 games. Very respectable numbers - remember, this league is overstocked with all-star RB's. Smith and McCardell were 7th and 10th in receiving yards... amazing, since they only played 13 and 14 games each. |

2004 Super Bowl Results
Jags Stun Brawlers 31-18! Most prognosticators figured the Super Bowl was going to be a one-sided affair this year. The problem is, they all picked Moe's Tavern. Brawlers RB Seymour Butz ran for 85 yards on 18 carries, and QB Al Coholic threw for a whopping 404 yards in 27 passes out of 52 attempts; but he only managed 1 TD and couldn't overcome 2 interceptions. Jacksonville RB Fred Taylor carried 19 times for 107 yards and 1 TD. Game MVP Vinny Testaverde was 26 for 37 passing, for 380 yards, 3 TDs, and 2 INTs. Jags WR Keenan McCardell had 8 catches for 154 yards and 1 TD. |

OK... 2004 is in the books. I'll post the season awards later, and I'll go ahead and start simming the TCY season so I can generate the draft file.
Start thinking of draftee suggestions. Let's keep the QB's and RB's at a minimum... no more than one of each. We had way too many last year, and there's plenty of good QB's in the league right now. Let's not have any more than three of any other position. ** Edit... maybe we can have more than three of each kind of OL. There's still room for more of those. Why oh why does Houston insist on giving away all our created players? First it was Jeffries, now Dishman too, damn! Surprise surprise, each time we let one go, we do a little worse.
As for my recruit, let's go with CB: Marcus Trufant, Washington State.
