I caught the second half and overtime of the Germany game while I was at the gym today. Pretty exciting stuff, but I think there has to be a team that I care about for me to be able to watch a full game.

Question, though. Offsides...how does it work? I know on the inbounds the offensive players have to be behind the player throwing the ball in, but what's up with the offsides calls while the ball is in play?

I have no idea what you're asking in end of the 2nd paragraph there .

You can't be offside from a goal kick or throw in after the opposition kicks the ball out of play.

When the ball is in play, or from a FK, there has to be at least two defensive players between the player receiving the ball and the goal when the pass is made. One of these is usually the GK, so it usually translates into one defender between the receiver and the goal.

You can't be offside if you are in your own half.

If you are in an offside position, but not 'active' i.e. interfering directly with play, you will not be given offside. If you are not active, but then run towards the ball/affect play in the same phase, you will then be given offside, whereas if you do not make a play on the ball, you won't.

That's basically it - it's a lot more controversial than this, but that's the basics

Any idea what the fight was about? I was watching the Chinese TV feed (also far superior to Balboa) and although I was able to pick up a few excited guttural noises, I couldn't figure out why there were argies hurling themselves at people.

I would probably need to see it in action to understand it. Thanks for the info!

The guy in the black suit that the Argentinians were trying to get at was Oliver Bierhoff, ex-German international and now part of the German coaching team. Not sure what he did to annoy them so much.

From what I saw it looked pretty serious, but I didn't see any punches getting thrown.

I think the tv only caught one punch getting thrown, kind of had the feeling that the tv cameras didn't catch up with the trouble until all the good stuff was finished. One of the German central defenders was apparently left lying on the turf.

When I say good stuff, I obviously mean disgraceful scenes that none of us want to see.

The basic rule is that when a ball is played to you from a teammate, there needs to be at least two opposing players in front of you. That usually means the opposing goalkeeper and a defender.

Think of the second player as the line of scrimmage that can't be passed until the ball is snapped, or in this case, passed.

OK, gotcha. What's the reasoning for the rule? To cut out cherry-picking?

I would guess that's the reason. Otherwise you could just station a bunch of players by the goal and hit long passes to them.

Sorry, maybe I came off as a bit of a jerk in my reply. Maybe because I would have loved to see my country's team present in this fight, rather than the one we were in a 5 days ago.

Anyway, I don't think it really was anything major and will end up as something nobody talks about tomorrow.

When you drill into the individual teams I found this stat most interesting:

Holland Dives: 19
Robben: 19
Rest of Holland: 0

*rimshot*

*Cue MIJB defense*

Ten minutes until another round of "The Ukraine is weak" jokes that were funny one time. And by one time, I don't mean one round of saying it 3-4 times back to each other. One. Time.

I know a guy who has a rather sizable amount of cash placed on their being at least one hattrick in the world cup. Odds were 9-4, I think.

The next ten minutes with Luca Toni on 2 goals may be his last chance.

For those who haven't seen, it appears as if Leandro Cufre gave the German defender a proper full kick in the balls to spark the melee (which does explain why he has doubled up on the ground!).

Whether there was any goading that drew the kick I don't know

How is C. Ronaldo's form w/ ManUtd? He seems like all he does is fancy move + fancy move + fancy move and then turns the ball over. Wasted motion.

Ronaldo is very dangerous in the EPL. I wonder if its the formation or just the better talent all around in defenses he's playing against that doesn't make him as dangerous as he is in league play.

After that shot, their shouldn't be - but Lampard's boosters don't seem to see his actual play. Awful.

Wow... Sven takes Beckham out... that's different.

Probably should have taken Lampard out and put Beckham in the middle and Lennon on the right.

no way there was a red card anywhere there. i honestly have no idea what celo is on about. the ref wasn't going to call a red for the foul, if you look, he was just going to call a foul. he called the red on the push (which ive seen a million times with no card). bullshit call.

He gave a red for Rooney kicking Carvalho in the crotch, right in front of the ref.

Also, why Crouch for Cole. Sub out Lampard, for God's sake.

the red wasn't for stepping on him. watch the ref, all he did was signal for the foul. the ref doesn't wait 10 seconds signalling a foul if he intends to card someone.

They were wrestling for position and IMO it looked like it was an accident in the course of their battling for the ball.
