It was meant to both a joke about the Braves glut of AAAA outfielders along with a joke about the Nationals history of stockpiling outfielders. They just seem like a good match to make a deal for Dunn.

Washington is negatively impacted by having the Orioles close by, but that's offset by the impact of politicians and lobbyists imo. Both are fairly transient cities with suspect fanbases. But apparently Atlanta is a much higher revenue generating team recently (4th-5th), so maybe they're actually a big market. Or it could be that success on the field translates to revenue generated.

You can't just turn around a losing culture overnight....Does Washington have designs of doing anything more than losing 100 next year? If so, then you can't possibly look at him unless you're bowled over by an offer.
Steadying veteran presence? Culture of losing? The Florida Marlins have lost more than 84 games once this decade and are currently tied for 1st with a payroll $23 million less than the Nationals. Oakland, Tampa Bay and Minnesota are within $5 million of the Nats payroll, below what KC is spending. Go find a shortstop with an OPS over .600 (Julio Lugo is hitting again ) and stop making excuses. Count yourself lucky you play in a division where the 2 big market teams (Detroit and Chicago) have been mismanaged and an even smaller market has won 4 of the last 7 division titles.

Braves sweep the Phillies, they're going to play just well enough to keep my hopes up in this crappy division.

Is there a site that has all the teams ranked by revenue? I thought that info might not be made public or otherwise be hard to come by.

Here's Forbes Magazine's 2008 version, using 2007 revenues.
The Business Of Baseball - Forbes.com

And here's a link to a site I don't recall ever seeing before but looked promising.
All manner of financial data compiled on teams back to the 50's, but I didn't really have the time or energy tonight to sort through what looked like a lot of Excel files.

I haven't watched the Braves apart from them playing the Phils, but based on that I wouldn't be shocked to see them (or the Fish) take the division crown. Mets and Phils are both bleeding pretty bad.

Great victory for the Braves tonight. Getting the runner out at home on the wild pitch was great teamwork.

Wow, according to that, WAS is the most profitable in the league with FLA close behind. There ya go, spend nothing, put a crappy product on the field, make money.

Sports Business Pages

The latter site has the Forbes lists with a little more detail. In 2007 the Braves were 18th in gate receipts but they were second in "other revenue" (only $4m behind NYY) which put them seventh overall. From 2003-07 they are in the top three in other revenue every year, usually behind the two NY teams. The 2001 Forbes post breaks down TV revenue by team and Atlanta was doing quite well compared to most clubs then, perhaps that is still the case today and where part of their high other revenue comes from. Cool link.

It all supports the notion that the Braves should have spent a few extra million to land Abreu or Dunn this winter.

Their TV revenue will likely be down after 2007 however, as their contract with (previously) co-owned TBS expired and was not renewed as TBS opted to move strictly to national games. That left the Braves to make a deal with FSN as well as putting together a local package on their own. Most accounts of that at the time (and common sense really) indicate that the Braves would be losing a chunk of TV revenue once TBS left the picture.

I think the team revenues can be deceiving as many teams own portions of the networks they broadcast their games on and can play around with the numbers. The Cubs for instance were historically known for having WGN and such grossly underpay for the rights to Cubs games. I'm sure those same games are played with the YES network and everyone else.

Tigers walloping Slowey and the Twins 6-0 after 3. This series is big. Hopefully the Royals will come back in that game.

Tigers bullpen blows it, and now it's tied. Miner fucking sucks. Leland's an idiot - French was doing pretty well, but he pulls him after he gets a big strike out in the 4th. I fucking hate Leland.

Francoeur pulled for a pinch hitter. His OPS+ is now 65 or so, and he's played in nearly every Braves game. I believe he's on pace for another 650 AB worthless season. Dunn showcased himself for a potential suitor with a HR and 2 BB.

Not in the least - he's a minor league scrub on a hot streak. Think Aaron Small for the Yankees a couple of years ago. Still, fun while it lasts.

Ahh okay. I was gonna say don't the Giants already have one of the better staffs in the league, I guess it just rubs off on whoever they throw next. thats cool though. He does seem to have decent control fwiw.

They also have the best pitching prospect in baseball in Madison Bumgarner, who's 19 years old in AA with a 1.70ERA, and Tim Alderson. The team can't produce a hitter (Kung Fu Panda notwithstanding), but they grow pitching like the Braves West.

Pretty fun 16 inning affair in Minnesota. Detroit is up 11-8, with the Twins up to bat. There is one on, one out and Morneau is at the dish.

I believe the answer to that would be: Yes.

From the "did you know?" file

That Lopez ERA last season (4.42) in 14 starts with Colorado is lower than the ERA of the top four starters on the Phils so far this season?
Or that his OPS against (770) from last season is more than 40 points better than the Phillies team OPS this year?

Yeah, it's come to that. He actually represents an upgrade to their current staff (which I'll admit I didn't realize was as truly woeful as it is)

Maybe it just means one of our outfielders is about to get suspended for a positive drug test.
