Nice goal by Portugal there. Good work by the shooter to not panic, and work with the limited space he was given.

That's the Maniche I remember from the European Championship 2004, before he left Porto for the money of some Russian team. Bad choice.

Yeah, they were so very very lucky last world cup to beat Italy and Spain. Thanks to a large part to their huge homefield advantage and the refs.

Nice footwork in the penalty box from the Dutch player. Too bad he couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

And the Dutch seem to be trying to take the mantle of 'biggets cheats if the WC'. They have excellent footballers - just play goddammit.

Should be an entertaining 2nd half. Will Portugal have enough gas in the tank to run with only 10 players against an attacking Dutch side? I see Figo being worthless for the last 15 minutes of the half, if he gets left in, which is probable.

Kuyt over Van Nistelrooy... interesting decision. RVN when fit is clearly one of the top 5 strikers in the world. Kuyt at this level is decidedly mediocre. Is Ruud carrying an injury I don't know about?

Leading up to that game, they looked pretty average. Even after the US game, more people were unimpressed with the US team than impressed by the German team.

Excepting diehard USMNT fans who insisted that the German team were world-beaters because they managed to outplay the USMNT.

Maybe it's the pressure of the tourney?
I think Katon and someone else speculated that Lampard has logged so many games in the last 2-3 seasons (some ridiculous numbers I cannot recall off the top of my head) that he's simply worn out. I believe they said that he seemed that way toward the end of the premiership season as well.

I'm not really seeing Portugal being any dirtier than the Dutch. It's a niggling game with both teams leaving the boot in.

Right result for wrong reason. Those fans theorized that die nationalmannschaft was great because they beat the USMNT, not because of the football they played.

Using that logic, the English national team has been simply brilliant. And even the Brits and English national team fans on this board could not make that particular claim.

Time for a comeback from the Dutch in the second half. Aren't they wearing the same uniforms that the allied team wore in Victory?

No, Germany ran over the USMNT which until this WC NOBODY does. We might lose to good teams 9see Holland firneldy), but we don't get run over like that.

Germany did it and that was reason to believe they had the players to dominate in the WC.

Dempsey might dive a bit much (usually it's more exaggerating than true diving), but he doesn't writh around on the ground?

The only player on USA who does that is Eddie Johnson (and I'm embarrassed to be a USA fan when he does).

Dola, although apparently the ref has eyes in the back of his head, and the yellow means it won't get reassessed after the game

Commentators giving Figo shit, but while his headbutt was out of order, he definitely caught an elbow there. How much malice was in there I'm not sure, but IMO can't blame Figo there.

There has to be something wrong with Ruud. If they need a goal or they go home, it seems like he is certainly a guy you'd want on the pitch.

The Dutch guy didn't Elbow him intentionally, but he was extremely clumsy and when you challenge like that you deserve whatever card(s) you get.

Fine, you can say that. But to say there was no contact is just wrong. He put his arm up to box him out and clearly caught him. Whether it deserves a card or not i'll leave up to the ref. I didn't feel to strongly about that one.

Both teams look like they'd beat England easily, if they manage to come out of this without half the team suspended.

Damn, how did Deco NOT get a red for that one. He wasn't even looking at the ball. That was a vicious attack along the lines of Bertuzzi on Moore.

Sneijder should be out for the push, too.
