One of the perks (to me) of the Pac-12 Networks is I get a lot more exposure to sports that didn't get a lot of airtime previously. While softball gets the WCWS on ESPN, regular-season games were hard to come by. Now those and volleyball get plenty of airtime, and it's fun stuff to watch. I'm actually kind of surprised Volleyball doesn't get more draw than it does - it's athletic as hell, fast, and to be caveman here, there's usually a lot of attractive ladies involved.

As the father of a daughter, I'm optimistic that women's sports will continue to make gains in exposure and popularity in the coming years, and if she turns out to be athletically inclined, she'll have more options available to her to pursue sports.

The networks that each sport are on are a direct correlation to how popular they are. If the NHL was drawing well, it would still have a ESPN package. It doesn't, so it was moved down the pecking order. I like hockey, but it's a lousy sport to watch on TV.

Wait. Hold on. If ESPN could pay what it is paying for the rights to the WCWS (and a bunch of other packaged NCAA sports) for hockey, I guarantee you it would.

Case in point: the WNBA! It's on ESPN, so it must be good. And popular!

The exposure of college softball has played a part in increasing my daughter's interest in the sport - she is now playing travel ball as a 12 year old. It's been a great experience for her (and us) and has gone a long way in developing her as an athlete.

From ESPN's standpoint, the WNBA and packaged NCAA sports are just part of the cost of securing deals with the NBA and big-time college hoops/football. The NBA deal as a whole would probably still be profitable if the WNBA games pulled a 0.0 Nielsen rating.

So Notre Dame denied Eddie Vanderdoes' LOI request and the NLI group upheld the appeal.

Coming out that he Grandmother has gotten pretty sick and wants to be closer to home.

I think the more that comes out about the story, the worse Notre Dame will look, though I feel he'll be let go once he enrolls at UCLA officially

It's not like ND is preventing him from going home. I still think ND sticks to their intentions.

Don't know how true it is, but I've read that ND and FSU are getting a lot of pressure from other schools not to let Vanderdoes or Thomas out of their LOI for fear of creating precedent.

It's not really precedent to allow someone out of their LOI to be closer to a sick relative. It happens all the time. Most of the pressure was before it was announced as a sick grandmother.

Here's the thing though - Notre Dame isn't preventing him from being much closer to his sick grandmother. He's already enrolled at UCLA. And unless I'm misreading the situation, all that's happening is that he'll be forced to use his redshirt this year since Notre Dame won't release him from his LOI.

Am I missing something?

Technically, he isn't enrolled yet. I think summer classes start on June 16 (next Monday), and it may not even matter then until he attends his first class, whenever that is (presumeably sometime next week).

He doesn't lose his redshirt year; he loses a year of eligiblity. This season can't be used as a redshirt year where he still would have four years to play four. If Notre Dame doesn't release him from the LOI, he will have four years to play three.

So the penalty is a little sharper than having to redshirt.

Yep. LOI penalties are stricter than just transferring once enrolled. Although a guy with his potential is only a 3 year guy anyway.

Ah, OK - yeah, that's a little harsh that he'd lose a year of eligibility.

Georgia Tech has announced the departure of pbp voice Wes Durham after 18 seasons, as he accepts an offer (unspecified) to work "television across the region".

I wish the guy nothing but the best, he's been awesome afaic & in one of broadcasting's tougher spots (following a legend in Al Ciraldo)

Got to have lunch with Wes a few times when I interned in the GT athletic office for a summer. He was the same off the air as on and a lot of fun. Loved listening to him.

Yes actually. On days when there's a sellout and the grass is full, the rest of the GA ticket holders sit on the rocks. Below is an example from a Nebraska game a few years ago. You'll see the top half of the 'M' isn't visible. Only reason the bottom half of the 'M' is visible is because they had temporary bleachers next to the end zone, blocking the view from the bottom half of the 'M'. That won't be the case anymore. There's no need to use the temporary bleachers now that the hill has been moved next to the end zone.

Wasn't there a Wash St fan or two who used to post around here? Can't remember seeing them for a while...

Anyway, Rutgers and WSU just finalized a two game series for 2014 and 2015. The 2014 game will be the season opener and will take place in Seattle. It's a city I've never been to and have always wanted to check out, might make the trip.

WSUCougar used to be pretty active around here but his posting is a lot more sporadic now.

Seattle is very nice in September - weather is almost always sunny and high '70's/low '80's early in the month. CLink is a great stadium, and it's situated at the south end of downtown right next to the historic Pioneer Square district and a short walk to the waterfront and a slightly longer walk up to the Pike Place Market and the shopping district of downtown. If you can swing it, I'm sure you'd have fun.

I'm cautiously optimistic on this one, too.

If he is healthy all season, I could see him having 50-75 receptions out of the backfield and slot in Holgorson's offense.

He doesnt have anything to do with the football team. He works in an administrative role dealing with non-revenue sports at UCLA. This isn't USC where everyone has a hand in football 24/7.

I bet you didn't know that he was an Olympic Volleyball official as well. Why not find a wayward Olympic and/or Volleyball thread and post it there? Oh wait, because that doesn't have much to do with taking a shot at UCLA, even if it uses something deplorable like this. I'm surprised that you didnt' just compare it to the Penn State situation while you are at it.

I hope he rots in jail.

You seem to be taking this very personally. I hate it when something bad comes up about my alma mater, but this seems as good a thread as any to post that story. And it's not like EF27 is a troller.

Admittedly had most any other person posted it, I [probably wouldn't have the same reaction. And he can troll when it comes to UCLA. The stuff he posted show laziness in what the article said which makes me think he saw a thread, copied the article and posted it here without reading it.
