In that same regard, who doesn't want to win $300+ million dollars?

I don't know that answer but I did find out that I must be doing this all wrong. I do the collection for the pool at work and I got this response from one of the newer people in the office.

"I don't play the lottery. If I am meant to win it I will."

Uh..... what????

Dammit, all this time I thought that I actually had to play in order to win.

I don't know. I just don't think it is as simple as saying who wouldn't want to win that money.

I think we all would love to have no financial worries and make certain our families and future generations are set. I just think it can turn into a situation of be careful what you wish for.

To think your life wouldn't change, possibly for the worse, is a naive way to look at it IMO.

Though it seems the popular answer has become "I don't want the money"; I say hell yes I want to win that money. While I would be fine with winning as part of a group I would LOVE to win the entire amount. I could do so much with that money but that is why I wouldn't win; because I would have a plan.

Besides family and friends being set I would start my own business, renovate my house (it is leaning towards becoming a money pit which really sucks at the moment), go on a kick ass vacation this year, my kids would be set, but after that there is a lot of fun that I would have doing random good deeds (pay off some mortgages for people that are struggling; set up some scholarships, some life changing tips while out to eat, some anonymous donations and gifts for those who are struggling). Though struggling would require trying and just having bad fortune.

Definitely. If I were to win I would almost certainly anticipate at least one person whom I care about, friend or family, to be cut out of my life because they got greedy.

It's a risk I'm willing to take, though. The amount of good I could do with that money, even just for my own future, outweighs that con. At least that is the case for me.

Oh my life would change, but only for the better. I'm not one of the dumb-asses who lose it all and then are dead in 6 months. But I am happy enough spending 2 dollars every 6 months or so when the jackpots get big and spend 30 minutes daydreaming about winning. The daydreams are worth about $4 per year.

I would imagine many lotto winners would have said the same thing prior to winning.

Yes, when I used to work at a law firm, my friend and I would buy a ticket once a month or so, and the dollar was always worth the discussion of how we would give our notice if we won.

I literally will only play the big jackpots because Wyoming's state legislature won't pass a lottery precisely because it's a "tax on the stupid" and yet, I joke "yet they're totally okay with us conceal carrying into courthouses and various other insane places." State voters almost universally want one, but no dice. So you have to go out of state to do it.

I'm with Lathum on this one. I've really struggled with whether to buy a ticket or not precisely because I'm not so sure that winning it would be a blessing.

It's what Lathum was saying with his reference to life being a complex ecosystem. Winning the lottery in this magnitude would just unleash a cataclysmic amount of energy and change into your life without any promises as to where it would take you.

For every loser who blows away their lottery fortune, there are lots of lottery winners who are quiet, live fine lives and are never heard from. We just hear about the wacked out cases.

If I were to win the big lotto tonight, I'd ask myself a very simple question:

What would Charlie Sheen do?

I didn't express this very well in my last post but I don't mean to argue that you or anyone else shouldn't play or hope to win. By no means am I arguing that it is wrong to play the lottery.

What I really meant to convey is that I am struggling with the question of whether I understand how life would change after winning, and whether I understand how events will be transformed in the future, and whether winning would truly be a blessing or not. Primarily, I don't understand how it couldn't irrevocably change my relationships with all of my loved ones.

I really find this a deeply interesting question; fundamentally, I'm not sure how it all plays out.

I think people need to stop doing the automated picks. Because the machine seems on both of the big jackpots I've played to trend towards the lower numbers and not a spread out spread.

They should give you, like, $5 just for that. That's an impressive miss rate.

There is a new daily lotto game in Texas called 'All or Nothing'. You pick 12 out of 24 numbers, and they draw 12 numbers. If you miss on all 12 or hit on all 12, you win $250K. You win something as long as you don't match on 5,6, or 7 of the numbers, which odds are you will hit on 5,6 or 7.

I wish. However, I do have a friend who buys gas at the location all the time. Lives a mile or two away. Texted him this morning to ask about it. Haven't heard anything back. Hoping he hit it.

Finally got a text back from my buddy. He didn't have the ticket. He did say that it's pretty likely that whoever won at that gas station will likely be a real-life version of the Beverly Hillbillies.

So the Missouri winner is a 52-old mechanic from a town of 500 people who has an adopted daughter. The Arizona winner hasn't come forward yet.

My friend that I mentioned previously knows these people. Says they are a fantastic family that attends their church. I'm guessing that church is going to receive a pretty significant upgrade in the near future.

This is pretty cool to watch. The APPARENT Arizona winner caught on a camera in a gas station in Maryland checking his tickets on a machine. Put a smile on my face.

The Missouri couple sounds like a great family. Hope this doesn't change that too much. MBBF and I live pretty close together, so Dearborn isn't very far away. I have a friend who lives near Dearborn and probably knows this couple as well.

Too bad the Royals angle wasn't true. The early myth was that they were playing the numbers of favorite Royals, since five of the six numbers were Royals' Hall of Famers and the sixth was Bo Jackson. Turns out it was a quick-pick.

Wow. That kind of reminded me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when Charlie found the golden ticket in public......"Run home Charlie, and don't stop until you get there!!!." Hopefully he gets back to Arizona in one piece (assuming he's a winner).

Everybody got their tickets? Powerball jackpot expected to go past $600M. You could split that three ways and still get a cash option of about $100M. Just nuts.

Me and my father in law each threw in $10 and agreed to split it if we win. I figure he will die long before me, and since he has 2 daughters I'll actually see 75% of that money eventually. Seemed like a solid investment.
