Florida' offense seems to just have the LSU defense confused at this point - the 20 yarder up the middle and then nobody within about 30 yards of that guy for the touchdown.

This was easily a bigger upset than App St./Michigan. App. State has been better than Stanford for the last few years. USC is better than Michigan.

No contest. Not in terms of name recognition but in terms of team strength.

How do you figure? With a muddle of 5-10 1 loss teams where most of the losses were bad losses to teams that are not rated highly.... how do you decide who goes to the NC game?

You raise a good point. Folks enjoy actively rooting against traditional powerhouses like USC, Michigan, Florida State, etc, but it is not as fun to root against teams like BC, Cal, or South Florida.

Yup.. we'll have a muddle of 1 loss teams with weak schedules with 1 loss teams with strong schedules but a bad loss...

This years NC game debate could be a little out of control.

I found an exploit in NCAA football. At the end of the half in the OSU/Purdue game OSU was flagged for grounding. At that point there were 46 sec remaining and the clock stopped. Aren't I right that the clock would have continued had it been a sack? Why does a team get rewarded for grounding with a clock stoppage?

I hope Arlie fixes this in the next version.

The Appy State upset was much bigger.

I know folks don't have much love for the Big East, but Cincy and Rutgers are playing a very good game on ESPN2.

You can only think that if you're wrapped up in name power.

Appalachian State is a better football team than Stanford. And they have been for the last few years. They would be favored at a neutral location against Stanford.

And it goes without saying that USC is a better team than Michigan and has been for years.

Personally, I like the old traditional bowl system (SEC vs. ACC in the Sugar Bowl; Big 10 vs. Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl, ect).

But as to the NC game, I just think we'll have to let the season play out.

If Florida pulls off the win against LSU I don't see any realistic way there isn't a muddle of 1 loss teams at the top at the end of the season.

of course we'll have to see how it goes, but I really don't see any realistic way around it... along with possibly my dreaded scenario of an undefeated Hawaii in that picture possibly too...

Me too. When it was a "mythical" national championship, it was a lot more fun to argue about.

It just made the bowls more meaningful and everyone was excited about going to Rose Bowl, or to the Fiesta Bowl.

I don't see Hawaii getting in the NC picture unless all off the big teams end up with 2 or more losses. I think most voters would take any of the big time 1 loss teams over an undefeated Hawaii team that has played a very soft schedule.

Who had a Cal-BC national champion game?

Though I don't think Cal or BC will get through unscathed.

So I think there are now 11 undefeateds left:

Boston College
Kansas
Missouri (up big on Nebraska at the half, could still fall)
Connecticut
South Florida
Cincinatti (tentatively)
Ohio State
Arizona State
California
Hawaii
Louisiana State

That was a bad call to risk that timeout, not enough at stake and you may need a challenge later. But timeouts themselves (outside of challenges) are overrated in college football.

They shouldn't have called either player there, all contact was off the initial 5 yard jam. Bad, bad call.
