FOFC ate the last post so I'll repeat much more briefly. I didn't know the practice of nontitle fights still went on, and didn't know the rules behind them. Fighters back then, and even some today, fight nontitle fights. So, I'll start doing these nontitle fights as well.

Bob Fitzsimmons set to fight Corbett, but there's a catch

He has to fight Tom Sharkey first. Bob Fitzsimmons and Tom Sharkey will fight on December 2nd of this year, the winner getting a shot at Corbett. Fitzssimons thought that he had the title shot lined up, but now he has to get passed Sharkey. This is also an chance for the hard hitting Tom Sharkey to get another chance to fight for the title. The winner of this fight will meet James J. Corbett in March of 1897.

On doing round by round accounts of all fights. These will stop soon. The reason is that with each year, more and more fighters are debuting. In 1919, in the CSV output, there is a screen length list of fighters debuting (32). So, in the future, I will only being doing it matched involving top 10 fighters. For those that are not, I will go back to doing just a paragraph summery. But, since the rankings don't mean anything right now, since I just started recording the info needed for rankings, I'll keep doing round by round for all until the rankings start "making sense".

EDIT: Actually, I went back and added the needed info for rankings (and made sure those with too few fights are ranked lower than the ones that have been around for awhile.). I just created a few php files to handle it. Turned out to be far less work that I thought it would.

Anyway, the rankings now do mean something (and I'm sure over time, I'll revise the formula.)

Frank "Paddy" Slavin 36-4-7 (29 KO)

Jake Kilrain 38-11-9 (23 KO)

Scheduled for 10 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A slow start to the round but it pucks up halfway through with Slavin barely edging out Kilrain in the round. (Round to Slavin, 1-0 Slavin)

Round 2: Much more action in this round as the two traded heavy shots. Again, Slavin does just enough to take the round. (Round to Slavin, 2-0 Slavin)

Round 3: Kilrain was dropped twice by Slavin as he really took a beating. He might have been KO'ed, but the bell saved him. (Round to Slavin, 3-0 Slavin)

Round 4: Kilrain was dropped twice again. This time, the bell would not save him.

The fight ends at 1:49 of the 4th round, your winner by knock out...FRANK "PADDY" SLAVIN!

Joe Goddard 26-7-5 (22 KO)

Denver Ed Smith 4-2-2 (3 KO)

Scheduled for 10 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Goddard easily dominated the round. Smith couldn't get anything done and Goddard used Smith as a punching bag. (Round to Goddard, 1-0 Goddard)

Round 2: Round 1 in reverse. This time Smith landed several hard shots and Goddard barely could do anything. (Round to Smith, 1-1 Even)

Round 3: Less action now as the two trade shots. Goddard barely gets the upperhand in this one. (Round to Goddard, 2-1 Goddard)

Round 4: An even round until the last minute where Goddard took control of the round and landed several clean punches. Smith's eye is starting to swell. (Round to Goddard, 3-1 Goddard)

Round 5: Another slow, even round. Neither man got the upperhand. (Round Even, 3-1 Goddard)

Round 6: Smith started out strong, but the action leveled out until the last 30 seconds where Smith again come on strong. (Round to Smith, 3-2 Goddard)

Round 7: Smith had this round under total control until Goddard caught Smith with a counter shot that kncok him out.

The fight ends at 2:31 of the 7th round, your winner by knock out...JOE GODDARD!

Joe Chonyski 26-5-0 (18 KO)

Peter Maher 31-5-1 (18 KO)

Pre-Fight Commentary: A fight between the #2 and #3 contenders. The winner of this puts themselves in position to get a title shot at some point.

Scheduled for 10 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Maher starts off strong but Chonyski starts getting his shots in. Maher does just enough to take the round. (Round to Maher, 1-0 Maher)

Round 2: Maher again starts off strong but as in the 1st round, Chonyski comes back. This time Chonyski really poured it on and did enough to take the round. (Round to Chonyski, 1-1 Even)

Round 3: Slower round as Maher couldn't do anything. Chonyski, however, got a few shots in. (Round to Chonyski, 2-1 Chonyski)

Round 4: Chonyski came out firing away but Maher avoided the shots and landed many punches in the round. A bg round for Maher. (Round to Maher, 2-2 Even)

Round 5: Chonyski accomplishes what he was trying to do last round and landed a few big shots that staggered Maher. (Round to Chonyski, 3-2 Chonyski)

Round 6: It goes back and forth until the last seconds of the round where Maher got knocked down by Chonyski. (Round to Chonyski, 4-2 Chonyski)

Round 7: Maher recovers from the knock down and in a slow round, does just enough to take the round. (Round to Maher, 4-3 Chonyski)

Round 8: CHonyski had a big round as he landed some nice shots. Maher couldn't get anything done and at the final seconds of the round, Chonyski hurt Maher with a big hook. (Round to Chonyski, 5-3 Chonyski)

Round 9: Some good action in this round as the two fired some nice shots at each other. Chonyski does enough to take the round. (Round to Chonyski, 6-3 Chonyski)

Round 10: Maher came out strong but got nailed by CHonyski and was covering up for the rest of the round. (Round to Chonyski, 7-3 Chonyski)

After 10 rounds of action, we go to the referee's score card. He has the bout score 7 rounds to 3 for your winner....PETER MAHER!

Post-Fight Commentary: Wow. A total reversal of the decision I had, but there were several close rounds. But, the referee had scored rounds 9 and 10 for Maher which were clearly for Chonyski.

Bob Armstrong 1-0-1 (1 KO)

Frank "Paddy" Slavin 38-4-7 (31 KO)

Scheduled for 6 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: In an almost exact replay of their fight last year, Armstrong drops Slavin early in the 1st round. This time Slavin is able to get up and finish the round...barely. (Round to Armstrong, 1-0 Armstrong)

Round 2: Slavin answers back with a good round. They both got off slow in this round, but Slavin pulled it together and won this one easily. (Round to Slavin, 1-1 Even)

Round 3: First two minutes of this round, it went back and forth, but Slavin took over in the final minute to take the round. (Round to Slavin, 2-1 Slavin)

Round 4: Unbeleivable! Slavin goes down twice in the first minute and a half and it looked to be over for him, but after getting up the second time, he caught Armstrong clean and knock him out out!

The fight ends at 2:20 of the 4th round, your winner by knock out...FRANK "PADDY" SLAVIN!

Bob Fitzsimmons 43-2-15 (38 KO)

Tom Sharkey 17-1-0 (17 KO)

Pre-Fight Commentary: The winner of the fight will face James J. Corbett next year for the World Heavyweight title. Sharkey will need to land some mean punches if he hopes to win this one. A great fighter in his own right, but Fitzsimmons is no punching bag and he will punch and counter punch very effectivly.

Scheduled for 15 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Sharkey starts off strong but Fitzsimmons tries to come on strong at the end of the round. (Round to Sharkey, 1-0 Sharkey)

Round 2: Sharkey starts off strong again, but Fitzsimmons quickly took over the round and nailed Sharkey with a lot of hard shots. He had Sharkey hurting by the end of the round. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 1-1 Even)

Round 3: Fitzsimmons continues his domination of this fight as he pounds on Sharkey. Sharkey is already looking tired out there, (Round to Fitzsimmons, 2-1 Fitzsimmons)

Round 4: More of the same as Fitzsimmons continues to dominate the fight. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 3-1 Fitzsimmons)

Round 5: Sharkey comes out strong trying to turn the tide, but he's met with effective counter punching. Fitzsimmons still mantains total control and by the end of the round, Sharkey's left eye has started to swell. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 4-1 Fitzsimmons)

Round 6: Sharkey is now just getting beaten badly by Fitzsimmons now. His eye is getting much worse and the referee may stop this one soon. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 5-1 Fitzsimmons)

Round 7: Wow! There's no better way to turn around a fight than to knock your opponent down twice. Fitzsimmons tasted canvas twice in this round, barely beating the count the second time as he got careless and Sharkey caught him. (Round to Sharkey, 5-2 Fitzsimmons)

Round 8: Fitzsimmons, now recovered from the two knock downs, has again regained control of the fight and totally dominated the round. Sharkey couldn't get anything going. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 6-2 Fitzsimmons)

Round 9: A slow round for the most part, but then in the last minute, Fitzsimmons really poured it on and nailed Sharkey with a few solid shots. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 7-2 Fitzsimmons)

Round 10: Sharkey keeps fighting back and in this round, there was a ton of action and both fighters landed some mean punches. A very close round, just barely won by Sharkey (Round to Sharkey, 7-3 Fitzsimmons)

Round 11: Fitzsimmons really nailed Sharkey several times and Sharkey is showing a great chin. Most other fighters would have been dropped. But Sharkey's eye is looking really bad now and it might get stopped soon. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 8-3 Fitzsimmons)

Round 12: Another easy round for Fitzsimmons. He didn't really land any powerful shots, but he stayed in control and landed some clean, effective shots. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 9-3 Fitzsimmons)

Round 13: And that's it. The referee is calling a halt to the fight as Sharkey's eye has gotten too bad.

The fight ends at 0:25 of the 13th round, your winner by technical knock out...BOB FITZSIMMONS!

Post-Fight Commentary: Sharkey almost pulled it out in that 7th round, but Fitzsimmons was barely able to survive and went on to really pound on Sharkey. He earns the right to face Corbett and that should be a hell of a fight.

Championship News

Bob Fitzsimmons is getting ready for his March 17th fight to attempt to take James J. Corbett's heavyweight championship title. Fitzsimmons is coming off two well fought fights against Tom Sharkey and Peter Maher, beating both by a late round knock out. Corbett's last defense was against Sharkey when he beat him on points (9-6).

On the undercard for that fight, Mysterious Billy Smith will do battle with Tommy Ryan, but neither man's titles will be on the line. It will be a non title contest.

In other news, George "Kid" Lavigne will fight William "Kid" McPartland to determine who will get the chance to fight Joe Gans later this year for his title. There are also rumors that Young Griffo is thinking of trying to sign a rematch with Tommy Ryan for his Welterweight title.

Solly Smith is trying to get another shot at Dixon's featherweight title. That fight may occur late in the year. First, Dixon will defend his title against Frank Erne* on March 24th.

* - Not in the game.

As with the new way of doing things, Bob Armstrong does not appear in the top 10, so this will be a paragraph summery

January 1st, 1897

Bob Armstrong 2-1-1 (2 KO) vs. Joe Butler 23-6-0 (17 KO)

Scheduled for 6 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Armstrong came out strong in the first, but Butler came back to make the second round even. Armstrong is determined to win this convincingly as he came out and hurt Butler in the 3rd round and scored the knock out victory in the 4th.

The fight ends at 1:37 of the 4th round, your winner by knock out...BOB ARMSTRONG

George "Kid" Lavigne 24-3-3 (14 KO)

William "Kid" McPartland 8-1-1 (5 KO)

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: McPartland controls the first round of action until the last 30 seconds where Lavigne almost steals the round with a few strong flurries. (Round to McPartland, 1-0 McPartland)

Round 2: Lavigne dominates the round and knocks McPartland down with 30 seonds left. McPartland gets up and survives the round. (Round to Lavigne, 1-1 Even)

Round 3: Lavigne controls another round and again hurts McPartland, but does not drop him. (Round to Lavigne, 2-1 Lavigne)

Round 4: McPartland comes out swinging, but Lavigne takes control quickly. McPartland landed a few hard shots in the last minute of the round to earn a tie for the round. (Round Even, 2-1 Lavigne)

Round 5: Lavinge controls most of the round but McPartland comes on strong as the round closes. A late flurry by Lavigne takes the round for him. (Round to Lavigne, 3-1 Lavigne)

Round 6: An action packed, back and forth round. Both fighters landed a few stunning punches. McPartland does just enough more to take the round. (Round to McPartland, 3-2 Lavigne)

Round 7: McPartland dominates the round. He landed a lot of hard punches and had Lavigne hurting badly by the end of the round. (Round to McPartland, 3-3 Even)

Round 8: A slower round this time. McPartland did more than Lavigne to take the round. However, McPartland looks winded while Lavigne still looks fresh. (Round to McPartland, 4-3 McPartland)

Round 9: A very close round as it went back and forth, but as the round closes, Lavigne scores a few round stealing shots. (Round to Lavigne, 4-4 Even)

Round 10: McPartland fully control the first minute of the round, but it looked like he got tired midway through and Lavigne took over and landed a lot of powerful shots and ends up taking the round. (Round to Lavigne, 5-4 Lavigne)

Round 11: This had to be one of the best rounds in history! The punches were flying and landing. Both fighters poured everything they had into this round. The crowd was standing for most of this one. Lavigne takes the round, however, as McPartland was out on hsi feet by the end of the round. (Round to Lavigne, 6-4 Lavigne)

Round 12: Lavigne and McPartland fought a close, even round for the first two minutes, but Lavigne hurt McPartland with a hook and was all over him for the rest of the round. (Round to Lavigne, 7-4 Lavigne)

Round 13: In this round, Lavigne dominated McPartland. McPartland is refusing to drop back to the canvas. It looks like it's over, however, as it looks as if McPartland doesn't have the energy to do the job. (Round to Lavigne, 8-4 Lavigne)

Round 14: A carbon copy of the 13th round, Lavigne controls all of the action as McPartland is just too tired to get anything done. (Round to Lavigne, 9-4 Lavigne)

Round 15: McPartland comes out swinging and is going for the knock out. He doesn't get it, however, but takes the round. (Round to McPartland, 9-5 Lavigne)

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the referee's score card. He has the bout scored 7 rounds to 6, for your winner....GEORGE "KID" LAVIGNE!!!

Post-Fight Commentary: Lavigne wins the chance to fight for Gans' title. A closer decision than what I had, but he got the right winner it would seem. The referee had it 5-2 for McPartland after the 9th round. With 6 rounds left, Lavigne would have to win 4 more than McPartland in order to win the fight, and he did. Lavigne won rounds 10 through 14 with McPartland taking the 15th. This made the final score 7-6.

Bob Armstrong 3-1-1 (3 KO) vs. Joe Butler 24-7-0 (18 KO)

Scheduled for 6 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

This fight had huge swings in control. Armstrong came out and dominated the early going, easily winning the first round and was in control until midway through the 2nd where Butler took over control and knocked Armstrong down in the 3rd round. In the 5th round, Armstrong takes control back and it took everything Butler had to survive the final two rounds.

After 6 rounds of action, the referee's score card reads 3 round to 3...the fight is a DRAW!

Ladies and gentlemen, the following non-title fight is scheduled for 15 rounds of boxing.

Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner. He has a record of 14 wins with all 14 coming by way of knockout, with 3 defeats and 4 draws. He officially weighed in at 152 pounds and is current reigning middleweight champion of the world...MYSTERIOUS BILLY SMITH!

And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner. His career record stands at 27 victories, 1 defeat and 2 draws with 23 wins coming by way of knockout. His official weight, 158 pounds. He is the current welterweight champion of the world....TOMMY RYAN!

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Ryan comes out determined to control the fight. A minute and half into the round, Ryan sends Smith crashing to the canvas with an uppercut. Smith gets up at 6 and covers up for the rest of the round. (Round to Ryan, 1-0 Ryan)

Round 2: Ryan completely dominates another round of action as he takes it to Smith. Smith was unable to get anything going. (Round to Ryan, 2-0 Ryan)

Round 3: The first half of the round proceeds slowly but suddenly Smith is sent to the canvas for a second time with a shot to the ribcage. He gets up, but is smothered for the next 20 seconds and the referee is forced to stop this one.

Ladies and gentlemen, the referee calls a halt to the fight at 2:08 of the 3rd round, your winner by technical knock out....TOMMY RYAN!

Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is the night's main event, and is for boxing's most valued prize...the heavyweight championship of the world!

Introducing first in the blue corner, the challenger, fighting out of Timaru, New Zealand. His career record stands at 44 wins, 2 defeats with 15 draws and 39 wins coming by way of knockout. His official weight for this evening, 167 pounds. He is the former middleweight champoion of the world and the #1 contender to the heavyweight title...."RUBY" BOB FITZSIMMONS!

And his opponent, in the red corner, fighting out of San Francisco, California. His career record stands at 14 victories with 3 draws and 3 wins coming by way of knockout. His official weight for this fight is at 184 pounds. He is the reigning undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion of the world...."GENTLEMAN" JAMES J. CORBETT

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A very slow round that left the fans with a bitter taste in their mouths. (Round to Corbett, 1-0 Corbett)

Round 2: It looked like another stinker but halfway through Corbett lands a hook that seemed to wake up Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons poured it on in the final minute to take the round. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 1-1 Tied)

Round 3: Corbett comes out and takes the fight to Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons tried to get inside but Corbett landed a lot of clean shots. But at the end of the round, Fitzsimmons landed a shot that stunned Corbett. (Round to Corbett, 2-1 Corbett)

Round 4: A slower round. Corbett lands a few here and there, but Fitzsimmons again comes on strong in the second half of the round and takes it. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 2-2 Tied)

Round 5: Corbett puts together another great round as he teaches Fitzsimmons a thing or two about countering. (Round to Corbett, 3-2 Corbett)

Round 6: And the back and forth battle continues as Fitzsimmons now puts together a great round. Corbett had trouble landing anything and Fitzsimmons got a few really clean shots in. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 3-3 Tied)

Round 7: Fitzsimmons puts an end to the seesaw battle as he dominates another round. By the end of the round, Corbett was hurt and nearly went down. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 4-3 Fitzsimmons)

Round 8: Corbett now comes out and picks Fitzsimmons apart. An amazing fight as most of these rounds have been won convincingly by the fighters. Corbett takes this round easily. (Round to Corbett, 4-4 Tied)

Round 9: A slower round. Either they took a round to off or they are getting tired out there. Fitzsimmons does a bit more than Corbett to take the round. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 5-4 Fitzsimmons)

Round 10: An incredible round as both fighters put it on the line. It seemed that both took a breather last round in preparation for this one. Both fighters landed a lot of shots and it's a round that's too close to call. (Round Even, 5-4 Fitzsimmons)

Round 11: Another slow round until the last 30 seconds where Fitzsimmons landed a few shots that nearly sent Corbett to the canvas. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 6-4 Fitzsimmons)

Round 12: Corbett might be sensing that this is getting away from him and he puts together a nice round. He didn't let Fitzsimmons get off any kind of punch on controled the whole action. (Round to Corbett, 6-5 Fitzsimmons)

Round 13: Corbett dominates another round as Fitzsimmons, who looks very tired out there, can't do anything. Corbett does need to be careful as Fitzsimmons has the power to flatten him if he gets careless. (Round to Corbett, 6-6 Tied)

Round 14: A slower round with Corbett dictating the action. He got a few shots in but is trying to avoid Fitzsimmons power. (Round to Corbett, 7-6 Corbett)

Round 15: Fitzsimmons comes out fired up and looking for a knock out. Although eh would not get it, he did easily take the round with a lot of good punshes. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 7-7 Tied)

According to my score card, it is a 7-7 tie. Ringside expert Christopher Almodovar has it scored 8-7 for Corbett. This was a very close fight that could go either way.

After 15 rounds of championship boxing, we head to the referee's score card. He has the fight scored 8 rounds to 7 for your winner....and STILL UNDEFEATED, UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....."GENTLEMAN" JAMES. J. CORBETT!

Post-Fight Commentary: A rematch, you would think, is a must. Such a close decision that could have gone either way. Going into the 12th roumd, Fitzsimmons was ahead 6-5 on the referee's scorecard. He did what a champion does, and that is to rise to the occasion. He needed to win some rounds, and he did just that, winning 3 of the last 4 rounds to keep his title.

Tommy Ryan ready for middleweight?

If his performance against reigning middleweight champion, Mysterious Billy Smith, is any indication, he'll destroy the competition in that division just as he has in welterweight. The two met on the undercard of the Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight and Ryan simply destroyed Mysterious Billy Smith in under 3 rounds. Some experts beleive that Smith made the mistake of taking the fight too lightly because it was a nontitle fight and think that if they fought for the middleweight title, a different Billy Smith would show up. Tommy Ryan has yet to make a statement, but expect one soon.

Do we need a rematch?

James J. Corbett successfully defends his world heavyweight title by the narrowest of margins, an 8-7 referee decision in a fight that could easily have gone either way. The fight was back and forth until Fitzsimmons started to pull away with the fight in the middle rounds. Corbett would need to win 3 of the last 4 rounds, barring a round ruled even, if he was to win the fight going into the 12th round and he did just that. Now the puplic is screaming for a rematch when Corbett has been thinking of retirement. Corbett will make a statement later this year on if there will be a rematch or not.

Joe Gans To Defend Title

Joe Gans has signed to defend his title against Young Griffo. It's been one year since Gans has beat Griffo for the World Lightweight Title. Since then, Griffo has won 5 fights and is ready to once again fight for the title. The fight is set for September 21st.

Solly Smith Gets His Shot

Solly Smith and George Dixon will fight for the World Featherweight Championship again. September 9th, 1893 was the date of their first fight in which Dixon won on a 9-4 decision after 15 rounds. Since then Dixon has defended his title 3 times and Solly Smith has gone 15-1-1, only losing to Torpedo Billy Smith 2 years ago. It's probable that if Smith had lost several fights in the last 2 years, he'd be getting the shot. As it is, Smith has been much more consistant and will get his second chance to fight for Dixon's featherweight crown. That fight will take place on October 4th.

Joe Chonyski 27-6-0 (18 KO) vs. Denver Ed Smith 4-3-2 (3 KO)

Scheduled for 6 Rounds

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Denver Ed Smith jumps out and easily dominates the first round. However, Chonyski would regroup and win the next 3 rounds where Smith was only able to land a handful of punches. They split the last 2 rounds and we go to the referee's decision.

The referee scores the bout 4 rounds to 2 for your winner, JOE CHONYSKI!
