We're back, more powerful than ever! So, for those of you who didn't hop over to the FCFL forum, I'll explain what happened. It's pretty much what everyone suspected -- lurker and I (who are, in fact, two different people -- no, I did not create a pretend girlfriend over three years ago, then proceed to act very mild-mannered about it until one fateful day) got engaged, and thought about how we should announce it to FOFC. The first page and a half or so of this thread is just the beginning of what we had come up with. We had more, so more fun was missed, but it seemed like the thread was running out of steam anyway, because people thought we were actually going for believability (thanks to our Net Detectives for exposing that one right away). I don't think we were going for a negative/uncomfortable feeling, but to those who really felt uncomfortable about it, I'll say "I'm truly sorry" to your face, and mutter "lighten up" behind your back. Thanks to all who stood up for me, although we were really going for a mood of zaniness and merriment in this thread, rather than one that raised upheaval. So a big thanks to those who kept that moment alive by not bothering with all the serious junk going on, and continuing to make wisecracks!

Anyway, thanks to all for the congratulations! Lurker and I are both really excited, and we're looking at Summer 2006 for the wedding. Y'all are invited, as long as you don't mind seeing a guy marry himself, while he's also stalking himself!

Glad to see you, and you really shouldn't mutter behind Ben's back.

Oh and Congrats to you and Lurker for landing each other.

That would've been much more interesting than the way we did meet. I might as well tell the story, however boring it is, so that Noop will quit bugging Passacaglia in every thread he posts for the juicy details. Over five years ago, our actuarial math prof assigned us to a study group together. Our love of goofing off and annoying our other study group members brought us together, we became great friends, and then after about a year we just fell in love. It was really natural and great. Of course, I thought he was a total dork when I first met him. And still do

Oh yeah, and we were thinking that our second, not our first, child should be named "Dola."

Sorry if I'm not fulfilling my female board member duties by not posting any comments that would get all the guys on the board turned on. Frankly, that would be too easy. There's a reason I posted for over a year before mentioning that I'm female and that was only because I was buying the latest version of the game for my boyfriend and all the homophobes had to make sure that I'm not a guy too. For all the girls that are enjoying turning the board into a chat room, maybe you should read the Onion article entitled "Woman At Farscape Convention Has Dangerously Inflated Self-Image"

I was only formally engaged for like three months. We ran off to Tahoe on the 4th of July and eloped... so, I won't forget my anniversary, either.

I was engaged that long. Its not uncommon these days for long engagements, especially for formal weddings. Reception halls are often booked solid for the entire upcoming year, necesitating a long engagement if one wants a meticulously planned, traditional wedding and reception.

I will be engaged for a year and a half before I get married this July 3rd. You are right about the reception places, all of the dates we wanted were already booked and we were looking well in advance.

I concur. My cousin had a six month engagement so that they could get married before the Marines shipped him out of the country. The parents wanted a traditional wedding with all of the trimmings and had a very hard time getting all of the stuff they wanted on such "short notice." (which 6 months apparently is in the wedding/reception business).

Plus, I'm Indian and that means it's got to be a freaking huge wedding with my parents inviting everyone they've ever met. Around 500 people.

I wanted to just have a reception at Pizza Hut or something while wearing jeans but my mom flipped out.

We were engaged for well over a year as well. Even if you aren't having a "big wedding," it takes time to get everything planned, and I thought our long engagement was a great idea even though we both KNEW we were going to get married.

I think comparing this board to a Farscape Convention is a little harsh. I think you actually get a pretty good cross section of society in here. Except for homos.

Y'know, it's funny, but I haven't really noticed any of those around here.

What I have seen lately are a few members who happen to be female playing along with what I've interpreted as good-natured posts that are almost self-parody of the whole "guy/girl chatroom" thing.

Lord knows, I don't actually see every post or even every thread here, so maybe I've missed something that'd fit your description. Or maybe it was an attempt at humor that misfired, or maybe it just didn't come out quite like you meant it, but otherwise ... well, it reads to me like an unwarranted cheap shot at some other members.

Yeah, you know I figure I probably know you somehow, Crapshoot. Or my parents know your parents.

And dude, chill Jon. I didn't say anything insulting to anyone -- if you like to talk about your boob sizes, then you probably wouldn't be offended by what I said.

I think it was just that several popped up at the same time and the board seemed to turn into a boys highschool lockerroom. All the boys seemed to be trying to out impress the girls For a day or two someone probably should have sprayed a water hose on fofc or something.

I'm glad they are around, I like the various points of views on conversations and welcome anyone to join in (except my wife).

I know what you're talking about, but I guess this might just be one of those rare cases where I'm the person giving the proverbial benefit of the doubt.

There was certainly no shortage of that "boy's locker room" stuff, I just didn't really believe it was particularly ... sincere, for lack of a better word. Largely "flirting for the sake of flirting" or "being a guy" just because it was the obvious response, not anybody actually expecting for a moment to successfully "make time" with any of the ladies. Or, phrased in FOFCspeak, there was plenty of funny just not much cocky to go with it

If/when the girlfriend and I get engaged it'll probably be at least a year before we get married. Of course, we've already been dating for nearly five and a half years, so what's a little more time?
