Better than a picture, I give you a movie of me in action in my first ever karate competition. It's a bo kata that lasts 1 minute 14 seconds. Sadly, while the first 40 seconds went quite well, at least I was happy with them, the shit hit the fan at that point as I lost my concentration for the slightest moment and I dropped my bo, disqualifying me from the competition...

Here's where you can download the thing if you want:
http://rapidshare.de/files/13141041/steve.wmv.html

It's 12.4mb.

I did come in third in traditional kata so I didn't come back home empty handed My son came in third with his bo kata, actually the same kata as the one I'm doing in that video, and I was really proud of him

Does Bo Kata have anything to do with gymkata?

some serious skills... other than the drop and slight hesitation at the end I'd give it a well done! One question I have is for actual combat it seems like you'd need a much stronger weapon... per the video I'd figure the strength at about equal with a pool stick. One good whack and you now have yourself 2 weapons (which might work better anyways)...

Thanks! Although I wouldn't say serious skills as I've only been practicing since last September. My son wanted to try it and since we're both allowed a free pass to one competition class, I decided to tag along. 14 hours of class later, that's what I came up with

This bo is a lightweight one, mostly done for showing off speed of execution, which was kind of the real purpose of my kata. People doing traditional bo katas usually do them with heavier, stronger bos, although they nowhere swing them as fast as one can do with a lightweight one. The toothpick ones, like the one I had there, actually come with a notice not to use them in sparring. That one bo was borrowed from our school but mine is on order.

Thanks for your comment on the kata but I'll be honest with you, that slight hesitation at the end came because I wacked the back of my head with the bo, ooops. My confidence was pretty much shot by then... That being said, I'll be entering another competition in exactly one month. There's no way I'll let that one failure be my only bo competition

No, no razor company contract, although I am willing to listen.

And I thought Jake Plummer beat me out for Grizzly Adams. But since you mention it, I haven't cut my hair for a long time. Not sure when the last time was but I know it was in 2005. The beard I started growing end of December...I think. I had one, then shaved it off, then had a semi-beard for a while before I decided not to shave any more. Shaving sucks, I usually only use clippers anyways instead of an actual razor.

Now is "sandwich" some kind of euphemism?

Er...nevermind.

I just tried to take a couple pictures with a big goofy grin, just to try to get away from the 'scary trucker guy' thing. After looking at the pictures, I think it just made it worse.

I was thinking more Andrew WK for Cringer.....It would be better to own NYC over Denver anyway.

LOL!!! so very true

My son talked about trying nunchakus before he settled on the bo. I probably would never have tried any weapon if he'd gone with the nunchakus cause I had no interest in them and I wasn't gonna sign up for the bo class (two hours split in two different days would have added up to our family logistic problems )

Ahhh - here I thought it was a veiled reference to the FOFC Hotties List that Farrah and I came up with a few months back. A few members of the board ***cough - Schmidty - cough - Skydog - cough*** thought it was wrong for us to have fun talking about the guys they way they are always talking about girls. But that is just water under the bridge
