Notre Dame fumbled the kickoff, GT ball inside the Irish 30.

Person I'm glad I'm not:
Lloyd Carr

It's gonna suck to be him this week.

where is the thread where I told people not to underestimate Appy st.?

You people underestimate the I-AA teams, but this is the defending champion who return a guy that was an amazing QB as a freshman last year and a RB who is a candidate for the Payton award.

Naturally, the ND fumble is now under review.
Also needless to say the NBC announcers felt like that was the right move to make.

I know that the I-AA stigma will haunt Michigan all year but this team is as good as most team in the MAC. Not an excuse but a credit to this team. They're truly talented.

Certainly ranks as the top 1 I've ever seen. I'd say it is at least in the top 5.

ESPN News just said that this is the first time a 1-AA team has beaten a ranked opponent since they classified 1-A and 1-AA in 1978.

True, but this certainly kills any NC hopes they had.

Guys on ESPN earlier were saying that they couldn't find a 1-AA team beating a Top 25 team, so it's certainly possible.

Can't think of one off the top of my head, but maybe a #1 losing to a very poor D-1 team later on in the season?

This team wasn't in the NC hunt. I love the Wolverines but they lost too much defensivley. Still, I won't be shocked if they win the Big 10 because now they have to play for the pride the rest of the way just to make up for this loss.

ESPN said #20 Baylor lost to Lamar in 1981, that was the only 1-AA over a ranked team they could find (or maybe Lamar was division 2), and this would seem to be a bigger upset than that.

Not quite at Chaminade-Houston level, but I can't think of any college football equivalent.

I think we (W&M) beat Notre Dame, but that would have been before the I-AA, I-A split I think.

Okay, THAT time the refes don't reverse the call, ND fumbles & gives GT the ball at the 32. Now at the 8, one long run by Choice.

I've never went one way or another on Lloyd Carr but today Michigan was outclassed. They just weren't ready for anything App State threw at them. Good reading the rest of the weekend.

For an outsider Michigan was a contender but if you follow the program you know how much question marks there were coming into this season. A few returners on defense and lost our three year starter kicker. Yes the offense coming back was a whos who of potential first and second round picks, but everything else was questionable you couldn't conceivably convince me anyway they were gonna win the NC let alone be in the game.

The crazy thing is that this one showed ALL the signs of the upstart fading at the end. Michigan running it all over them. Long TD run. App State interception, but then they got back up out of the grave and won it. Amazing.

If Carr doesn't go unbeaten the rest of the way, I can't see any way he keeps his job after this.

Again, people are underestimating Appy St. No, they're not top 25 material but this isn't really any worse than losing to a non-BCS conference team in reality.

With the win, and their dominance last year, they're the most high profile 1-AA team ever, probably.

This may be a stupid question, but I'm curious, is it possible for a lower-tiered bowl with an at-large bid to invite them?

I realize they're committed to the 1-AA tournament, but lets say the schedule allowed both?

First off...App State might be good but we are talking about going into Michigan and knocking off either the #1 or #2 program in the history of college football. That easily ranks as the greatest upset in college football history.

Secondly, Lloyd Carr should either resign right now or he should be fired right now. He's lost every big game they've played the last several years and this is the final one. His time is done and it should be as of the moment the kick was blocked.

I'd have to disagree with you. Two-time defending I-AA champ or not, this is a program that lost to NCSU last year 23-10 before winning their title. The previous season they lost to Kansas 36-8 and LSU 24-0 before winning their title.

This is pretty hard to defend for any legitimate D1 team.

Might be a rough day for the Big 10. Michigan goes down and now Wisconsin is getting man-handled by the Washington State offense in Madison.

I'm not saying it wasn't a huge upset, I'm just saying in actual quality on the field Appy St. is not that much bigger of an upset than a mid-range MAC team, or even the best MAC team.
