---------------- We have a good defence and I think Kiprusoff is coming around but without Ruthemann, Lundqvist and Reinprecht, I don't like our chances against Colorado. We've played them five times this season and have gone 0-4-1. In the last 23 meetings, we're 6-14-2-1. Game 1: Calgary @ Colorado Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. No scoring in the first period. In the second, Sakic deflects a Blake point shot for the first goal of the game. Cole scores a powerplay goal to tie it up. In the third, Gratton gives Colorado a 2-1 lead. Mike Grier scores into an empty net. Final Score: Colorado 3 - Calgary 1 (GWG: Chris Gratton). We were outshot 26-17. Kobasew and Tifu got '6' ratings. * Kimmo Timonen (3a, '10') ** Tommy Salo (16 saves, '8') *** Joe Sakic (1g, '8') Game 2: Calgary @ Colorado Kiprusoff starts (93%). Dykhuis in for Warrener (80%). Lindros scores a powerplay goal in the first. No scoring in the second. 2:10 in the third, Grier scores for a 2-0 lead. Final Score: Colorado 2 - Calgary 0 (GWG: Eric Lindros). Bell and Tifu had '6' ratings. * David Aebischer (18 saves, '8') ** Eric Lindros (1g, '8') *** Mike Grier (1g, '8') Game 3: Colorado @ Calgary Kiprusoff has posted two '8' ratings and has very good morale so he starts despite being only 72%. Reinprecht is healed and will replace Tifu. Warrener plays at 90%. I shake the lines up. Lombardi is demoted to third line wing and Reinprecht replaces him as the second-line center. The line of Spets-Lombardi-Kobasew was a minus in both games. I decide to use 'Just Three' for my forward lines. Reinprecht scores first. Konowalchuk ties it up late in the first. Vyborny scores in the second to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. 1:43 into the third, Reinprecht ties it at 2 with his second of the game. 1:18 later, Forsberg gives Colorado another one goal lead. Final Score: Colorado 3 - Calgary 2 (GWG: Peter Forsberg). Spets and Lombardi get '6' ratings. * Peter Forsberg (1g, '8') ** Steve Reinprecht (2g, '8') *** Richard Matvichuk (2a, '8') Game 4: Colorado @ Calgary Buhrer starts because Kiprusoff is only at 87%. No other changes. Cole scores on the powerplay to give us a 1-0 lead. Tanguay quickly ties it up. Kobasew scores a powerplay goal in the second to make it 2-1. Iginla then scores to make it 3-1. With four minutes left in the game, Sakic makes it close but we manage to hold on. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Colorado 2 (GWG: Jarome Iginla). We outshoot Colorado 27-19. Reinprecht, Lombardi, Pyatt and Frogren all get '6' ratings. * Chuck Kobasew (1g, '8') ** Erik Cole (1g, 1a, '8') *** Jarome Iginla (1g, 1a, '8') Game 5: Calgary @ Colorado Kiprusoff starts. Dykhuis in for Frogren. With 2:25 left in the first, Tanabe scores to give us a 1-0 lead. With 17 seconds left in the first, Iginla adds one as well. No scoring in the second. Tanguay scores in the third but we hold on to force game six. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Colorado 1 (GWG: Jarome Iginla). Simon was the only one with a '6' rating. We were outshot 35-21; Kipper stole this one. * Miikka Kiprusoff (34 saves, '9') ** David Tanabe (1g, '8') *** Jarome Iginla (1g, '8') Game 6: Colorado @ Calgary Kiprusoff starts. Lundqvist is healthy so he resumes his place on the second line. Reinprecht drops to the fourth line. Spets is still in, Simon is out. Leopold (82%) is removed from penalty killing. Reinprecht scores in the first to give us a 1-0 lead. In the second, a Lindros powerplay goal ties the game. Iginla scores a powerplay goal to regain the lead. Kobasew scores a powerplay goal in the third to make it 3-1. Spets scores the fourth goal. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Colorado 1 (GWG: Jarome Iginla). Dykhuis gets a '6' rating. * Jarome Iginla (1g, '8') ** Steve Reinprecht (1g, 1a, '8') *** Lars Erik Spets (1g, 1a, '8') Game 7: Calgary @ Colorado It's amazing that we've even forced a game seven after being down 3-0 in the series. I had a hard time simulating this game - such a long year, a great regular season, could all be a complete waste if we lose. I've saved the game at this point but I'm not cheating, honest. There are some decisions to make. Kiprusoff is at 94% with a 'Superb' morale. He starts. I have Souray at 85% with a 'Superb' morale versus Dykhuis at 99% with a very low morale. I have to stick with Souray but I remove him from the top combination and from penalty killing. I keep the same lineup up front that has brought us back in the series. Ruthemann is the only regular out of the lineup but he's an important piece of the puzzle - 1st line left wing and second leading scorer on the team. I was thinking of changing the ice-time distribution for forwards from 'Just Three' to 'Normal' but I change my mind again and decide to leave it like it was for the past three games. Here goes everything... 6:22 into the first, a Mike Grier wristshot gets Colorado on the board and is the only goal of the first period. In the second, Cole gets stopped by Salo on a breakaway but a few minutes later Lombardi sets up Yelle for the tieing goal. Kiprusoff then stops Vyborny on a breakaway to keep the score level. Forsberg rags the puck, passes to Tanguay in the slot who one-times it top-shelf past Kiprusoff for a 2-1 Colorado lead. Salo then robs Richards on the doorstep. We head into the third period down a goal. While pressing, Grier gets behind the defence but Kiprusoff stands tall robbing him on the breakaway. With 1:41 left, we pull the goalie. Kobasew strips Kurt Sauer of the puck and jams it toward the goal but Salo covers up. Lindros puts the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal. Final Score: Colorado 3 - Calgary 1 (GWG: Alex Tanguay). Colorado outshot us 29-21 and outhit us 25-17. We had 19 giveaways to their 13. We weren't outplayed by the high flying Avalanche but just couldn't beat them four times in a row. No one had a '6' rating so everyone showed up. * Tommy Salo (20 saves, '9') ** Alex Tanguay (1g, '8') *** Mike Grier (1g, '8') Colorado defeats Calgary, 4 games to 3. Another bitterly disappointing end. I really don't know what I could have done differently and it may just come down to not having the depth that Colorado could afford. Although, looking at their lineup, we matched up pretty well considering Blake got injured early in the series with a seperated shoulder and will be out for two months. I'm not sure what changes will be made for next year that would improve our playoff play. In other news, Chicago have signed Jamie Fiesel as GM and Guy Charron as Head Coach. |

So what have we learned from this season....we have learned your team can compete extremly well in the regular season, but you may be missing an ingredient for playoff success, is it the goaltending, i dont think so......Depth, and I dont know if a team like Calgary can afford to have depth at the NHL level....
Nice season though, im yet to reach the 100 point barrier, ofcourse, ive won every 1st round series ive been in...lol

Here is something I've been working on for a while to track draft success and player development. I wish something like this was in the game but since it isn't, and since player histories are deleted upon retirement, I decided to keep track of it in Excel.

June 18th, 2006
--------------- Carolina fails to make an offer in time to F Bruce Graham (20), their 3rd Round Pick from 2004. He's an all-round center who scores 70 goals and 140 points in 70 games in the QMJHL. I make an offer along with Nashville and Tampa. I suspect I'll lose out as I'm not willing to offer millions without a two-way clause for a player that might not crack the lineup. Indeed, Nashville wins the day, no doubt promising regular playing time with the big club. Similarly, San Jose does not make an offer to D Michael Busto (19), their 9th Round Pick from 2004. He looks decent but he's a project. I'm happy to have him start out in the ECHL and work his way up. He is delighted to come to terms. The 2006 NHL Entry Draft is about to begin... Round 1 1(1) - Nashville selects RW/C Phil Kessel, 6'0, 213 lbs. - Sagina Spirit, Canada (ISS Ranking: #1) An American goes first overall. 1(2) - Edmonton selects C Bryan Little, 6'0, 209 lbs. - Barrie Colts, Canada (ISS Ranking: #3) Looks decent but a '6' in Determination would concern me. 1(3) - Chicago selects C Dmitri Frolov, 5'9", 154 lbs. - Dynamo-Energia Ekaterinburg, Russia (ISS Ranking: #8) Frolov would have been my first selection in the draft regardless of position. 1(4) - San Jose selects LD Steve Spade, 6'4", 209 lbs. - Sarnia Sting, Canada (ISS Ranking: #10) Two Americans go in the top four. 1(5) - Dallas selects C Ben Maxwell, 6'0", 211 lbs. - Portland Winter Hawks, Canada (ISS Ranking: #5) A '17' in Wristshot but a little light in the physical and mental side of the game. 1(6) - Pittsburgh selects RW Jesse Joensuu, 6'5", 191 lbs. - Porin Assat, Finland (ISS Ranking: #2) The first European selected. 1(7) - Ottawa selects LW/C Chad Morin, 6'2", 178 lbs. - Bowling Green Falcons, USA (ISS Ranking: #9) Another American - three in the top seven. My scouts were high on him and I wouldn't have hesitated to select him in the first round. 1(8) - Minnesota selects C/RW Jason Reese, 6'2", 222 lbs. - Boston College Eagles, USA (ISS Ranking: #4) Americans are dominating so far. 1(9) - Columbus selects C Thomas Burgener, 5'10", 169 lbs. - SC Bern Jr, Switzerland (ISS Ranking: #7) Possibly the highest drafted Swiss player in history. 1(10) - Carolina selects LW Chase Crowder, 6'4", 183 lbs. - Peterborough Petes, Canada (ISS Ranking: #46) Poor choice this early. 1(11) - Florida selects LW/RW Blake Geoffrion, 6'6", 238 lbs. - Manhattanville Valiants, USA (ISS Ranking: #11) Four Americans in the top eleven. Geoffion is a sure thing; another guy on my list. 1(12) - Buffalo selects C Bobby Hughes, 6'1", 209 lbs. - Kingston Frontenacs, Canada (ISS Ranking: #13) Not even looked at by my scouts. 1(13) - Philadelphia selects RW Alexander Butsayev, 6'2", 205 lbs. - Krylja Sovetov, Russia (ISS Ranking: #6) Can a player with a '1' in Bravery succeed in the NHL? 1(14) - Chicago selects RW Mark Raymond, 5'10", 207 lbs. - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Canada (ISS Ranking: #18) A Bravey of '2' would scare me off. 1(15) - Phoenix selects RD Michal Ivicic, 6'0", 191 lbs. - Banska Bystrica, Slovakia (ISS Ranking: #31) You don't see too many '20' in Creativity, especially from a defenceman. 1(16) - Detroit selects RW/LW Sergei Shabanov, 5'11", 178 lbs. - SKA Saint-Petersburg Jrs, Russia (ISS Ranking: #20) Another '20' in Creativity but a little light in the physical department. 1(17) - NY Rangers select RD Blaine Gunson, 6'0", 216 lbs. - Victoriaville Tigres, Canada (ISS Ranking: #21) I doubt I would have taken him in the ninth round. 1(18) - Montreal selects LW Curtis Green, 5'10", 200 lbs. - Belleville Bulls, Canada (ISS Ranking: #15) Unimpressive attributes. 1(19) - Boston selects RW/C Rhett Rahkshani, 6'0", 198 lbs. - New Hampshire Wildcats, USA (ISS Ranking: #14) Another American that looks solid. 1(20) - Carolina selects LD Mikko Salonen, 6'1", 189 lbs. - Helsingen Jokerit Jrs, Finland (ISS Ranking: #27) Another defenceman with a '20' in Creativity but with better all-round attributes. 1(21) - Washington selects G Alexander Smirnov, 5'11", 171 lbs. - CSKA Moscow Jrs, Russia (ISS Ranking: #12) &^%&! This was the guy I was targetting. According to my scouts, the clear #1 goalie in the draft. I didn't want to take advantage of the AI by trading up to get him. 1(22) - Atlanta selects RW/C Carter Camper, 5'10", 165 lbs. - Boston College Eagles, USA (ISS Ranking: #19) Can I trade down? After Smirnov was selected, I looked at my draft board and Camper was the highest player left. Another American selected. 1(23) - Calgary selects C Greg Gardner, 6'0, 202 lbs. - Swift Current Broncos, Canada (ISS Ranking: #72) This is the next highest player on my board. Seems like a solid two-way center. Maybe not as much upside but steady and reliable. He was on my draft board last year as well. The first 19 year old selected. 1(24) - Colorado selects LD Mike Weber, 6'2, 207 lbs. - London Knights, Canada (ISS Ranking: #40) Another American but my scouts didn't bother to take a look at him. 1(25) - New Jersey selects F Jonathan Toews, 6'2", 194 lbs. - Prin George Cougars, Canada (ISS Ranking: #32) Looks ok but not on my list. 1(26) - Toronto selects RW Cal Clutterbuck, 6'0", 220 lbs. - Kitchener Rangers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #94) Great name. Good technical attributes, lacks in other areas. 1(27) - Anaheim selects LW Colin McCarthy, 6'0", 171 lbs. - Acadie-Bathurts Tita, Canada (ISS Ranking: #41) A '4' in Bravery means he wasn't looked at by me. 1(28) - San Jose selects C/LW Peter Mueller, 6'1", 218 lbs. - Bowling Green Falcons, USA (ISS Ranking: #84) Another good looking American prospect. 1(29) - Vancouver selects RW Tuomas Tuominen, 5'10", 198 lbs. - Kajaanin Hokki Jrs, Finland (ISS Ranking: #37) Won't turn 18 until September but wasn't looked at by my scouts. 1(30) - Tampa Bay selects LW Michal Segla, 6'1", 183 lbs. - HC Slovan Slovnaft Bratislav, Slovakia (ISS Ranking: #52) The second Slovakian taken in the first round while no Czechs were taken. Looks good, with a '20' in Off The Puck. Round 2 2(31) - Edmonton selects RW Antto Arvonen, 6'1", 205 lbs. - Kokkolan Hermes Jrs, Finland (ISS Ranking: #30) A '2' in Bravery and a lot of single-digit attributes. 2(35) - Dallas selects C Antti Lehtinen, 6'0", 211 lbs. - HIFK Helsinki, Finland (ISS Ranking: #50) My scouts didn't look at him. Put up big numbers in the Finnish junior leagues but failed to register a point in 13 games in the SM-Liga. 2(38) - Dallas selects C Mitch Fadden, 6'0", 218 lbs. - Tri-City Americans, Canada (ISS Ranking: #24) Was on my list. Decent prospect. 2(44) - Calgary selects RD Mark Cormier, 6'4", 205 lbs. - Owen Sound Attack, Canada (ISS Ranking: #28) Since I picked in the first round, of the players on my list, only Fadden has been selected. Cormier has physical and mental tools to go along with a '17' in Slapshot. He scored 15 goals and 59 points in 62 games as a 17 year old in the OHL. He has plenty of time to develop his game. 2(56) - Edmonton selects LD Ty Wishart, 6'5", 227 lbs. - Kamloops Blazers, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Looks ok, but a '4' in Bravery. Round 3 3(65) - Dallas selects RW/LW Moises Guttierez, 6'4", 220 lbs. - Kamloops Blazers, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Very interesting. This American from Anchorage has been on my radar for two years. He was on my draft board last year and again this year, racking up points in the WHL. He's double-digit everything but for whatever reason, my scouts didn't like him. It will be interesting to see what develops. 3(75) - Calgary selects LW/C/RW Mathias Trygg, 5'9", 154 lbs. - HV71, Sweden (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Trygg has been on my radar since the first draft. This Norwegian racked up points in Norway but this past season did the same in the Swedish elite league as a 20 year old, where he won the Swedish Elite League championship and finished third in rookie of the year voting. Spets and Trygg could be a good Norwegian combination. Trygg is the first 20 year old drafted. 3(83) - Calgary selects G Mathias Gundersen, 5'11", 196 lbs. - Stjernen Hockey, Norway (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Another 20 year old Norwegian into the mix of the Calgary Flames. This was an easy selection as he was the only goalie left on our list and I wanted to make sure I got at least one in this draft. Nine other NHL teams had him on their shortlists. 3(86) - Toronto selects RW Bob Regier, 5'9", 189 lbs. - Cambridge Winterhawks, Canada (ISS Ranking: #119) Looks ok but a '5' in Bravery. Round 4 4(95) - Dallas selects RD/LD Christian Nordgren, 5'11", 169 lbs. - Sodertalje Jrs, Sweden (ISS Ranking: #177) A very good pick up. Was on my list and could be a steady #4. Has blazing speed. 4(104) - Edmonton selects LW/RW Andre Herman, 6'1", 205 lbs. - Red Deer Rebels, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) '5' Speed, '5' Determination. Long shot. 4(112) - Calgary selects LW/C Marius Andersen, 5'11", 218 lbs. - Furuset Ishockey IF, Norway (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Currently a free agent. Another Norwegian that has been on my board for a few years. 21 years old but looks like he could step in right away as a depth player. I can now form an entire Norwegian line. 4(113) - Calgary selects LW Andrew Little, 6'0", 189 lbs. - Halifax Mooseheads, Canada (ISS Ranking: #145) This is my scouts' selection. He is only 17 so he still has time to impress me. He's has the highest score on my draft board but his technical attributes are mostly single digits. He still has 3 years of junior eligibility so I'm trusting that my scouts are seeing something I'm not. 4(116) - Toronto selects LW Jordan Lemay, 6'1", 169 lbs. - Chicoutimi Sagueneens, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Not completely scouted by my scouts. Only 10 points in 56 games. Appears to be an up-and-down winger. 4(120) - Edmonton selects C Jesse Wamsley, 5'10", 196 lbs. - K & A Golden Hawks, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) A 19 year old currently without a team, looking to play junior. Too many '5s' and '6s' in technical attributes to expect much. Round 5 5(121) - Edmonton selects LW/RW Tuomo Laukkanen, 5'11", 220 lbs. - JYP Jyvaskyla, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Ok technical, lacks in other areas. 5(125) - Dallas selects LW/RW Ned Lukacevic, 6'0", 198 lbs. - Kootenay Ice, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Looks really good. Dallas is having a good draft. 5(132) - Edmonton selects LW/RW Michal Blanar, 6'3", 205 lbs. - Kelowna Rockets, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) I would have drafted him. One of Edmonton's better pick-ups. 5(143) - Calgary selects LW Patrick Bordeleau, 6'5", 211 lbs. - Quebec Remparts, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) I think this is a diamond in the rough. As a 20 year old in his third season in the QMJHL, this is his first season of showing offensive upside. He won a Memorial Cup this past season. My scouts have rated him all over the board from unlikely to improve the roster to a decent prospect. It's worth the gamble in round five. 5(146) - Toronto selects C Frederik Cabana, 6'1", 209 lbs. - Drummondville Voltigeurs, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Good technical attributes but only a '5' in Speed. Round 6 6(151) - Edmonton selects LW/C Geoff Paukowich, 6'4", 207 lbs. - Western Michigan Broncos, USA (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Good stats but my scouts never looked at him. 6(155) - Dallas selects LW Teemu Tuomi, 5'9", 185 lbs. - Helsingen Jokerit Jrs, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked) 21 year old currently without a team. My scouts never looked at him. 6(173) - Calgary selects LW/C/RW Tom Fritsche, 5'9", 213 lbs. - Colorado College Tigers, USA (ISS Ranking: #121) Getting a ranked player this late is a bonus. He's at a point a game pace in the NCAA so we'll see what happens. 6(176) - Toronto selects LW Chad Dunlop, 6'2", 211 lbs. - Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Ok technical attributes but a '5' in Bravery and a '6' in Speed. Round 7 7(181) - Edmonton selects LW Scott Lewadniuk, 6'0", 198 lbs. - Windsor Spitfires, Canada (ISS Ranking: #157) Won't turn 18 for several months. Has lots of time to develop. 7(185) - Dallas selects LW Martin Sundin, 5'8", 194 lbs. - HV71, Sweden (ISS Ranking: Unranked) My scouts never looked at him. Good stats in Swedish junior leagues. 7(203) - Calgary selects C Ryan Horne, 6'2", 209 lbs. - Sioux Falls Stampede, USA (ISS Ranking: #149) Another young ranked player who fell. As is my standard strategy, very good physical and mental attributes but lacks technical skills which hopefully will develop with time. 7(206) - Toronto selects LW Ramon Buser, 5'10", 196 lbs. - EHC Zunzgen-Sissach, Switzerland (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Looks ok. Time will tell. Round 8 8(211) - Edmonton selects LW Christian Wepf, 6'3", 178 lbs. - EV Zug, Switzerland (ISS Ranking: Unranked) 21 years old and all technical skills are single digits. 8(214) - Dallas selects LW Andy Nash, 5'11, 222 lbs. - Acadie-Bathurst Titan (ISS Ranking: Unranked) Another great pick-up by Dallas. Just turned 18 and attributes already look good. Great draft by Dallas. 8(233) - Calgary selects LW/C Andrej Direr, 5'11", 211 lbs. - MSHK Prievidza (ISS Ranking: Unranked) A 19 year old Slovakian who just made the jump to the Slovakian Elite League and didn't look out of place. He has plenty of time to develop. 8(236) - Toronto selects C/LW T.J. Oshie, 5'10", 200 lbs. - Boston University Terriers (ISS Ranking: #100) Nice pick-up this late in the draft. Round 9 9(241) - Edmonton selects LW Florian Busch, 6'1", 209 lbs. - EHC Eisbaeren Berlin, Germany (ISS Ranking: Unranked) A 21 year old German with decent attributes. 9(245) - Dallas selects LW Pekka Laukkanen, 6'1", 205 lbs. - Jarvenpaan Haukat, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked) My scouts never saw him. 9(263) - Calgary selects LW/RW Jerry Pollastrone, 5'10", 202 lbs. - Baie-Comeau Drakkar, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked) This American looks like he's a light-heavyweight with some skill. 9(266) - Toronto selects LW/RW Jaroslav Stefus, 5'9", 145 lbs. - HC Kosice, Slovakia (ISS Ranking: Unranked) The 145 lbs. isn't a typo. Although, his attributes look ok and he flirted with my draft list this year. Jarome Iginla is once again voted Fans Player of the Year. In a shocking move, the Board has given $6 million in dividends to shareholders but increased the player budget to $47.5 million. |

-------------- It's now July so I put everyone on light training. The list of free agents is huge. F John Madden (31), F Michael Peca (32) and D Chris Pronger (31) all intrigue me. However, that extra budget room is quickly being eaten up by the many prospects I have in camp. After all, we're supposed to be developing from within. Still, I'm wondering if I really have a #2 center in camp. Bell just seems to be better on right wing than at center but with Iginla and Kobasew ahead of him on the depth chart, he's stuck on the third line. Although, having three solid lines is a bonus. A couple of my prospects look up to D Dion Phaneuf (21). With all of my prospects now in camp, my total payroll is $41 million. This leaves $6.5 million to add a #2 center. I make an offer to John Madden. Calgary Flames sign F John Madden (31) from New Jersey for $14.5 million/3 years. He has the possibility to add $1.65 million/year in bonuses. This is my first major unrestricted free agent signing. This is strictly a move for the playoffs. If healthy, we should have three solid lines that can challenge any team. My offer to G Taylor Dackers (19) has been rejected because he has a three month injury. As a result, my exclusive rights to him have expired. This is a loophole that really sucks. Imagine if Crosby was injured and you couldn't sign him before your exclusivity expired. Maybe it's best to sign your prospects right away after the draft? NY Rangers sign D Bryan McCabe (31) from Los Angeles for $12.6 million/3 years. Boston appoint Mike Sullivan (38) as Head Coach. New Jersey signs D Brett Hedican (35) from Philadelphia for $3.4 million/1 year. Washington signs F Daniel Alfredsson (33) from Ottawa for $13 million/2 years. Atlanta signs D Sean Hill (35) from Carolina for $3 million/1 year. Chicago signs D Janne Niinimaa (31) from NY Islanders for $11.4 million/3 years. St. Louis signs D Adam Foote (34) from Colorado for $5.25 million/1 year. Vancouver signs D Chris Pronger (31) from St. Louis for $17.75 million/3 years. Man, Vancouver is stacked top to bottom. Ottawa re-signs G Patrick Lalime (32) for $18 million/4 years. Colorado have appointed Brad Park (58) as an Assitant Coach. St. Louis signs D Brian Rafalski (32) from New Jersey for $8.5 million/2 years. New Jersey signs D Eric Desjardins (37) from Vancouver for $3.2 million/1 year. Vancouver signs D Marcus Ragnarsson (34) from Philadelphia for $2.8 million/1 year. Chicago signs D Andy Sutton (31) from Atlanta for $5.6 million/2 years. Columbus signs D Steve Staios (32) from Washington for $6.6 million/2 years. Anaheim have appointed Jordan Bilodeau (52) as General Manager. This is the same guy just recently fired by Chicago. Pittsburgh trades G Sebastien Caron (26) to Detroit for the rights to D Roger Summermatter (19). Washington signs G Manny Fernandez (31) from Minnesota for $7.2 million/4 years. Detroit signs G Olaf Kolzig (36) from Washington for $5.5 million/1 year. Philadelphia appoints Doug Jarvis (51) as an Assistant Coach. Colorado re-signs F Donald Brashear (34) for $1.6 million/1 year. San Jose trades the rights to G Marcus Strom (21) to Pittsburgh for the rights to F Ryan McDonald (18). Minnesota trades F Danny Stewart (21) to Columbus for F Arsi Pisspanen (21). St. Louis trades D Jake Wilkens (22) to Edmonton for F David Clarkson (22) and a 6th Round Pick in 2007. Atlanta trades a 4th Round Pick in 2008 to Calgary for F Josh Bonar (22). Bonar is all flash but no finish. I picked him up after he went undrafted thinking he might develop. After a poor season in Lowell, he had an even worse year in Las Vegas. He's no more than a fringe NHLer at best. Ottawa signs F P.J. Axelsson (31) from Washington for $6.6 million/2 years. Edmonton trades the rights to F Peter Franchin (20), a 3rd Round Pick in 2007 and a 4th Round Pick in 2008 to Detroit for G Jimmy Howard (22). The revolving door in Edmonton continues. New Jersey have appointed Craig Ludwig (45) as General Manager. It seems Lou has retired. Tampa Bay trades the rights to D Roman Tesliuk (20) to Pittsburgh for F Jon Sim (28). Toronto signs D Bob Boughner (35) from Philadelphia for $3.2 million/1 year. Colorado signs D Boris Mironov (34) from NY Rangers for $3.5 million/1 year. San Jose trades G Vesa Toskala (29) to Chicago for the rights to F Chase Crowder (18). Minnesota trades F Eric Chouinard (26) to Carolina for the rights to D Oscar Berglund (21). Montreal signs F Jeremy Roenick (36) from Philadelphia for $5.5 million/1 year. Here's a bug. Dackers was able to sign with Colorado despite being injured, while I was not. Prospect Game 1: @ Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (S.A.I.T.) This game is one of four game against local colleges and universities to evaluate the prospects after which cuts will be made and we'll move onto the NHL exhibition. We win 3-1. Our British draft pick, F Matthew Myers (21), scores a goal and is first star of the game. F Kris Chucko (20) also impresses. F Yannick Tifu (21), F Eric Nystrom (23) and F Fredrik Naslund (20) disappoint. Prospect Game 2: @ Mount Royal Cougars We win 4-1. F Scott McCulloch (20) is first star with two goals and an assist for a '10' rating. Myers is second star and continues to impress and push for a spot on the team. He's certainly outplaying Tifu who say some time with the big club late in the year last year. The roster is pretty well set with the only question being will Myers make the team and where do I fit Lundqvist, Myers, Lombardi, Spets, Pyatt and Reinprecht into the grand scheme of things. I really don't want a young player being a healthy scratch day after day. Prospect Game 3: @ University of Calgary Dinosaurs We win 4-1. McCulloch and Chucko are the real deal. Tifu has been a real disappointment. Meanwhile, Myers gets another '8' rating. I've also expected more from D Grant Lewis (21). Instead, our best defensive prospect has been D Andy Rogers (20). Prospect Game 4: @ University of Lethbridge Pronghorns We win 4-1. All that is settled is that Myers will be given a shot to make the team against the big boys. Dallas trades F Ryan Donally (21) to Anaheim for D Craig Switzer (21). Exhibition Game 1: @ Vancouver A 3-3 tie. Reinprecht and Nilson showed chemistry. Bell and Spets each got '6' ratings. Exhibition Game 2: vs. Vancouver We lose 4-1. Buhrer got a '5' rating. Myers, Pyatt, Reinprecht and Dykhuis got '6' ratings. Exhibition Game 3: @ Minnesota We win 3-1. Lynch, Madden, Myers and Dykhuis get '6' ratings. Myers is sent down; I want to see him dominate this year in the AHL. Exhibition Game 4: vs. Minnesota We win 2-1. Spets gets a '6' rating. Exhibition Game 5: @ Edmonton We win 3-1. Lynch gets a '6' rating. The lineup keeps getting screwed around on me now that I'm not playing the games out in full. Lundqvist was scratched for some reason. Exhibition Game 6: vs. Edmonton We win 8-3. No one had a '6' rating but Spets was removed from the lineup. NHL Waiver Draft Chicago selects F Mike Comrie (26) from Montreal. Dallas selects D Niclas Kronwall (24) from Pittsburgh. Columbus selects D Per Braxenholm (22) from NY Islanders. Buffalo selects D Patrice Brisebois (35) from Carolina. Chicago selects G Sebastien Caron (26) from Pittsburgh. Dallas selects D Dan Focht (28) from Pittsburgh. Columbus selects F Martin Bartek (26) from Nashville. Los Angeles selects G Martin Biron (29) from Boston. Toronto selects F Daniel Cleary (27) from Phoenix. Tampa Bay selects G Mathieu Garon (28) from Los Angeles. |

It's just the same way you schedule exhibition games. You can arrange an exhibition game, a tour or a tournament. I just schedule these games earlier (late August/early September) and against local colleges/universities which always accept.
One of these days I'm going to try a European tour for my exhibition games... |

We outshot Dallas 35-16 but were 0/6 on the powerplay. * Keith Primeau (1g, '8') ** Marty Turco (34 saves, '9') *** John Madden (1g, '8') Souray will be out for 1 month with a twisted ankle sustained in practice. Later in the period, Nilson gets his second of the game to restore a two goal lead. Halfway through the third, Laraque makes it 5-4 Calgary. Iginla answers on the powerplay to make it 6-4. Brian Leetch (Tor) wins Defensive Player of the Week. Game 4: vs. Montreal Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. Barnaby scores first to give Montreal a quick 1-0 lead. 2:32 into the second, Kobasew blows a slapshot by Marc Denis to tie the game. 23 seconds later, Cole blasts a one-timer on a feed from Kobasew for a 2-1 lead. Richards scores his first of the year to make it 3-1. Cole then deflects a Warrener wristshot on the powerplay for the fourth goal. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Montreal 1. Bell, Lundqvist, Reinprecht and Dykhuis got '6' ratings. * Erik Cole (2g, '8') ** Chuck Kobasew (1g, 1a, '8') *** Dion Phaneuf ('8') I sign F Christian Hanson (20) from Ohio State and D Louis-Philippe Lachance (20) from Val d'Or. They will join the team next year. Both players were on my draft board but went undrafted. Game 5: @ Vancouver Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. Reinprecht scores late in the first to give us a 1-0 lead. Kevin Romy finds the net in the second for his first career goal which ties the game. With 1:04 seconds left in the game, Chris Nielsen gives Vancouver the lead. Nielsen adds one more into the empty net. Final Score: Vancouver 3 - Calgary 1. Game stats were even. We were 0/5 on the powerplay. Nilson, Lombardi, Spets and Ruthemann got '6' ratings. * Chris Nielsen (2g, 1a, '9') ** Dan Cloutier (24 saves, '8') *** Steve Reinprecht (1g, '8') Brian Gionta (NJ) wins Offensive Player of the Week. Scott Niedermayer (Stl) wins Defensive Player of the Week. Game 6: vs. Columbus Kiprusoff starts. I juggle the line combinations but use the same personnel. Ruthemann scores his first for a 1-0 lead. Cole scores in the second, deflecting a Warrener slapshot. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Columbus 0. We outshot Columbus 31-18 but went 0/4 on the powerplay. Nilson, Kobasew, Pyatt and Buhrer got '6' ratings. * Petr Cajanek (2g, 1a, '9') ** Jarome Iginla (2g, '8') *** Mattias Timander (1g, 1a, '8') I demote F/D Darren Lynch (23) and promote F Matthew Myers (21). Game 8: @ Colorado Kiprusoff starts. Lundqvist is out, Myers is in. Iginla scores on the powerplay off of a Ruthemann rebound. 2:43 into the second, Brashear ties it up. Forsberg goes coast-to-coast to make it 2-1. Nilson ties it up with 22 seconds left in the second period. 3:03 into the third, Ortmeyer regains Colorado's one goal lead. Cole scores on the powerplay to tie the game at 3. 21 seconds later, Nilson gets his second of the game. Forsberg ties it up at 4 to force overtime. 50 seconds into overtime, Iginla wins it. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Colorado 4 (OT). Not saying the game knows this or not... but he's Michael Ryder's brother, and is considered by many to have more skill then Mike had at that age. |

Thanks, sach. I signed up right away but I'm only interested in the Flames. I did help Jeff with the Lowell roster once they decided to do an overhaul of the minors. We'll see...

------------------- Game 10: vs. Detroit Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup which means Lundqvist and Bell are healthy scratches. Souray is still out with an injury. I change everything to a defensive mentality except for the powerplay. Madden deflects a Frogren wristshot to get us on the board. Datsyuk answers for Detroit. Spets scores in the second to give us a one goal lead. 1:05 into the third, Lidstrom ties the game. Lombardi one times a slapslot from the slot on a feed from Spets and it give us the lead. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Detroit 2. We outshot Detroit 32-20. Cole was the only one with a '6' rating. * Matthew Lombardi (1g, 1a, '8') ** John Madden (1g, '8') *** Pavel Datsyuk (1g, '8') Calgary Flames trade the rights to G Mathias Gundersen (21) to St. Louis for D Barret Jackman (25). Jackman is being shopped around so I inquire and St. Louis wants my best goalie prospect. I go for it. Gundersen wouldn't play for us for several years and it isn't every day you can add Jackman for so little. Plus, Souray is an unrestricted free agent so Jackman replaces him. I place D Karl Dykhuis (34) on waivers to make room for Jackman. Game 11: vs. St. Louis Kiprusoff starts. Jackman is in. Our six defence pairings: 1) Phaneuf - Warrener, 2) Jackman - Tanabe, 3) Frogren - Leopold. No change up front. 3:38 in, Lombardi puts it through Foote's legs and blows it by Khabibulin for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Iginla makes it 2-0. Foote redeems himself with a goal of his own to put the Blues on the board. Tkachuk ties it up before the period is over. In the second, Cole scores a powerplay goal by deflecting a Tanabe point shot. Leopold then scores his first of the year with a powerplay goal to make it 4-2. In the third, Ruthemann strips Rafalski of the puck and makes it 5-2. Palffy scores one late. Final Score: Calgary 5 - St. Louis 3. Pyatt was the only one with a '6' rating. We outshot St. Louis 27-16 and outhit them 23-10. Lombardi and Spets are showing chemistry early in the year. * Erik Cole (1g, 1a, '8') ** Jarome Iginla (1g, 2a, '8') *** David Tanabe (2a, '8') Jere Lehtinen (Phi) wins Offensive Player of the Week. Ed Jovanovski (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Week. Game 12: vs. Vancouver Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. 1:42 in, Kariya scores on the backhand. 1:16 into the second period, Bertuzzi makes it 2-0. 2:31 later, Naslund scores on the powerplay to make it 3-0. Sopel then makes it 4-0. With 41 seconds left in the second, Leopold gets us on the board. Richards scores in the third. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 2. Iginla, Pyatt and Kiprusoff got '6' ratings. Game stats were even. * Brendan Morrison (3a, '9') ** Markus Naslund (1g, 1a, '8') *** Paul Kariya (1g, '8') Carolina have signed F Stephane Yelle (32) from Calgary for $1 million/1 year. Game 13: @ Detroit Buhrer starts. No change on defence. Bell is in for Pyatt. Lang scores first to get Detroit on the board. Lang scores in the second to make it 2-0. Walker scores quickly afterwards to make it 3-0. Madden scores a consolation goal in the third. Final Score: Detroit 3 - Calgary 1. Reinprecht, Ruthemann, Frogren and Buhrer got '6' ratings. Again, game stats were even. * Kevin Weekes (25 saves, '8') ** Robert Lang (2g, '8') *** John Madden (1g, '8') I'm tired of this charade. We should be doing better than this, many of my players are indicating the team has more potential than it is showing and the Board has increased the budget this year with hopes of improvement. Instead, we sit in the lower half of the Western Conference despite not getting blown out in any game. I think the players have tuned out the coach, who is in his fourth year with the team. I fired Head Coach Brian Sutter (50) who is in his last year of his contract. I promote Jim Playfair (42) to Head Coach. Los Angeles sign D Hal Gill (31) from Boston for $5.6 million/2 years. Sergei Samsonov (Bos) wins Offensive Player of the Week. Steve Staios (Cbs) wins Defensive Player of the Week. Game 14: @ Nashville Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup except I change team mentality to normal, attacking on the powerplay and defensive on the penalty kill. No scoring in the first. Madden scores in the second. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 1 - Nashville 0. Nashville outshot us 19-18; quite the barnburner. Reinprecht was the only one with a '6' rating. Iginla, Kobasew and Richards have been no shows this year. * John Madden (1g, '8') ** Vesa Lahtonen (17 saves, '8') *** Miikka Kiprusoff (19 saves, '8') Game 15: @ Chicago Buhrer starts in this back-to-back game. Souray is in for Jackman (71%). Pyatt in for Reinprecht. No scoring in the first. No scoring in the second. 1:04 in the third, Comrie breaks the deadlock. With 5:44 left, Madden answers. With 2:59 left, Renberg regains the lead for Chicago. Shantz scores an empty netter. Final Score: Chicago 3 - Calgary 1. Phaneuf, Ruthemann and Pyatt got '6' ratings. * Michael Leighton (35 saves, '9') ** Mike Comrie (1g, 1a, '8') *** Mikael Renberg (1g, '8') I demote F Matthew Myers (22). He's a consistent center but he's no more than a grinder. I need some scoring help on left wing so I promote F Eric Nystrom (23). Montreal have sign F Michael Peca (32) from NY Islanders for $8.5 million/2 years. Game 16: @ Edmonton Kiprusoff starts. Lundqvist replaces the demoted Myers. Hemsky scores to make it 1-0. Rita makes it 2-0. In the second, Hemsky scores his second to make it 3-0. Richards scores a meaningless goal in the third. Final Score: Edmonton 3 - Calgary 1. We were outshot 34-23. Bell, Lombardi, Pyatt and Ruthemann got '6' ratings. * Ales Hemsky (2g, '8') ** Cam Ward (22 saves, '8') *** Jani Rita (1g, '8') This is our second loss to Edmonton - the worst team in the NHL. Two of their three wins have come against us. We sit in 11th place, three points out of 8th. What an ugly start to the season. |
