Well, fwiw, the song is considered to be the first ever hit rap song and basically the origin of the entire genre. In my mind it is more clear a "trendsetter" than the previously mentioned "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" because you could argue that there were a lot of similar bands and songs that cropped up atht esame time as Teen Spirit, and that it just happened to be the most popular.

If you mean The Organisation, you didn't even spell it correctly. And if that's who you mean, then, no, I haven't. I can throw a lot of things out there that people won't know that I would love to draft. They'll be Free Agent picks, though. No sense in waiting on a draft pick.

I've heard other people say this, coming from similar perspectives (they love all types of music, can appreciate all kinds, etc.), but am totally confused how that could be possible. I could understand not appreciating the lyrics, especially more recently with the heavy emphasis on violence and women...but the beats, the rhythms, sometimes I'm just amazed at what I'm hearing (underneath the lyrics). |

My pick is coming up... an artist who's been pacing the green room and frantically calling their agent to ask why they haven't been taken yet.

Great start, but this comment is a biiit too early. Lots of other catagories around, and I do think that most voters will be looking more at the "Classic" and "Epic" catagories than any other to be frank.

Not the same. The organization is a band that was formerly known as death angel. I am in no means being critical of the pic or of the artist and their effect on that genre. I would have never listened to a rap song at the point I was at in the early 90's. Last edited by Lathum : 02-22-2007 at 02:38 PM. |

And I didn't think you were. I'm rather certain I have never heard "Rapper's Delight" all the way through, I'm just quite aware of it. "Walk This Way" was originally an Aerosmith song (could've been used in Covers I think) and was and has been heavily rotated ever since.

Classic -
Epic - Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - This is the song that introduced Elvis to America, which in turn makes it the song that introduced Rock and Roll to much of meainstream (i.e. white) America. Yes, black artists had been doing rock and roll for years and Rock Around the Clock had already come and gone, and you could even argue that "That's All Right" was the real Elvis crossover song. But Heartbreak Hotel was the big hit that largely launched the Rock and Roll era, not to mention Elvis's career. And yes, like a lot of songs that will be taken early this techincally could also be a cover. But I doubt the voters think of it that way.

I had Elvis in my trendsetter list as well. However, I didn't pick him because of the reasons you list above. There are a lot of people that will discredit this pick because he was not the first true rock 'n roll artist, covered a lot of his songs, etc, etc. Good pick, though. I think he had to be a top trendsetter pick.

I would put Another Brick in the Wall squarely in the arena category, for sure...Pink Floyd was the definitive arena rock band for a while, no?

Still, putting all that aside, anyone who claims Elvis Presley wasn't one of the two or three most influential figures in rock and roll history is just trying to be argumentative.

It certainly fits into either category. I was a in high school when it came out and remember it more for the social cometary then just as a great song.

If you're going Floyd for Arena Rock, I don't see how this is the song you pick - particularly based on the definition that Maple Leafs laid out.

Wow, trendsetter is becoming like the center position in the NBA, or like DH in MLB. Teams are just putting random guys in the lineup, without even checking to see if they're any good.

Trendsetter is going to be difficult now. Sure there are plenty of trendsetting artists/songs unpicked, but the question is how many of the voters will recognize, say, a trendsetting Blues song.

I think it also becomes tricky to define that they were truely a trendsetter. That's what I was trying to say earlier. Finding songs that A) Are truely trendsetters and B) People know are trendsetters - will be difficult.

Not to mention, the category isn't "most influential", it's "trendsetting". There's a difference. Can something (relativelty) obscure really be considered a trendsetter? Or is the song that rips it off and becomes a hit the trendsetter? Edit: For example, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" wasn't especially original. That sound had been around for years, and many great bands had come and gone in relative obscurity playing songs that sounded an awful lot like what Nirvana ended up releasing. They didn't invent anything or even perfect it, but they were the ones who brought it to a larger audience. Original? No. Trendsetting? Without question.

A tough choice here, as there are songs I'd prefer to have earlier, but that "two songs sung by women" rule is going to bite some folks in the tail. I'm going to avoid the coming crunch by taking one one of the most popularly beloved and critically important songs by a woman artist. The song has it all -- social consciousness, the civil rights era backdrop, an African-American woman demanding her due...and it rocks, too. Every female vocalist in the modern era walks the trail this song blazed. I also get bonus points for having seen her perform it. With that:
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - Arena - Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
