Yep, from their own strategic oil reserves. Hopefully that will increase supply enough.

Where I live in CT, prices have went from $2.59 on Monday to $2.67 on Tuesday, $2.85 on Wednesday, $3.04 on Thursday, $3.19 on Friday and Today it went to $3.25 all at the same gas station.

This is getting ridiculus.

Yep. Here's hoping that the Hybrid Technology really gets kick started because of this mess. Even if prices do end up coming down in the coming weeks, hopefully this is a wake up call for automakers to put more resources into fuel efficient cars.

As mentioned many times before, Euro has had to deal with high gas prices for YEARS. They make do with what they have by 2xing their gas milage compared to ours.

most places are $3.29 around here EXCEPT...

the gas station down the road from my apt had the "gas sale" sign out and had unleaded for $2.99. Just another example of why the "2 cent margin" line is total bullshit

I thought it was a 12 cent margin from that article earlier in the thread. That said, this is all speculative charging of "why are you suckers willing to pay".

Exxon's $10B fill-up: Cashing in on crunch
By Brett Arends
Wednesday, September 7, 2005 - Updated: 04:27 PM EST

Oil companies came under new fire yesterday when it emerged that ExxonMobil's profits are likely to soar above $10 billion this quarter on the back of the fuel crisis.

That's $110 million a day, and more net income than any company has ever made in a quarter. It's also a stunning 69 percent increase over the same period a year ago and a 34 percent jump from the $7.6 billion Exxon made just last quarter.

``Do you realize President Bush has just given a tax break to ExxonMobil?'' thundered Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden). ``Of all the companies in the history of the world that needed a tax break, this month, ExxonMobil should be at the bottom of the list.''

The law gives incentives to producers such as Exxon to expand production, such as for drilling for new wells in deeper waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

``It makes me angry,'' agreed Rep. Marty Meehan (D- Lowell), noting rising fuel prices ``are going to have a negative ripple effect throughout the economy.''

Meehan yesterday sponsored legislation on Capitol Hill to penalize price ``gouging,'' assuming it can be agreed what that is. Markey is preparing for Energy Committee hearings on the fuel crisis.

Even oil company shareholders were critical. Hub fund manager Lee Forker, the head of New England Research & Management, said the profits reflected a failure of oil companies' leadership to invest in future production. ``They're maximizing present cashflows and ignoring the future,'' he said.

ExxonMobil is spending about $5 billion a quarter buying back its own shares.

Forker says the oil companies bear responsibility for recent shortages, because they have held back on investment in new production for years due to a fear of a price collapse. ``It could just be a big scam – `Let's just restrict the supply along with the OPEC countries and we'll all get rich together' '' he said.

Crude oil prices fell yesterday by $1.61 to $65.85 a barrel. Gasoline prices also eased slightly from late last week's panic.

But Lehman Brothers yesterday became the first Wall Street investment bank to issue a new profits forecast for Exxon following the week of post-Katrina turmoil, when gasoline prices surged as high as $3.59 a gallon in the Bay State and crude oil prices briefly topped $70.

The new forecast: $1.62 a share, or $10.2 billion in total. Other analysts are likely to follow suit.

Jacques Rousseau, energy analyst at investment bank FBR, yesterday explained that most of the extra money that consumers are paying for gasoline is going straight through to the big companies' bottom line.

The reason? Prices are soaring because of perceived shortages while the cost of producing the gasoline is little changed.

Gas has fallen to 2.48 the other day at the nearby gas station. When I was coming home that afternoon, there were long lines at that station because they were .12 cheaper than the local 7-11.

Haha, I find that funny.

I bet the station that's $0.12 more could put up a sign saying "For a small $1.20 fee you don't have to wait in line" and get more customers!

12 freaking cents... even over the course of a year for an average person, that's less than $50 out of your budget.

Yesterday, we had a state question on the ballot to determine if we wanted to raise gas taxes by .22 to improve roads and bridges. It was the most lopsided defeat of a state question in Oklahoma history.

Quote:
Fuel tax plan runs out of gas

By John Greiner
The Oklahoman

In what could be the most lopsided election defeat of a state question in history, Oklahoma voters killed a proposal Tuesday night to raise their fuel taxes to help improve the state’s bridges and highways.

With all 42 precincts reporting, more than 87 percent of voters were rejecting the proposal to raise the 14-cent per gallon diesel tax and 17-cent per gallon gasoline tax to 22 cents each.

Michael Clingman, secretary of the state Election Board, said this election could surpass the most lopsided defeat of a state question in state history.

In 1952, Oklahoma voters rejected an initiative petition proposal to increase the sales tax, with 86.28 percent against it to 13.72 percent for it, Clingman said.

With 1,942 of 2,225 precincts reporting, State Question 723 was being trounced 299,780 to 44,009, according to unofficial returns from the state Election Board.

“The numbers clearly mean the voters have rejected a gas tax increase as a method of funding improvement of roads and bridges,” said Neal McCaleb, chairman of Oklahomans for Safe Bridges and Roads, which promoted the proposal.

The overwhelming defeat of State Question 723 does not mean Oklahomans are against improving highways and bridges, he said.

This rejection puts the issue squarely in the hands of the Legislature, said McCaleb, a former Republican state legislator and past state secretary of transportation.

“I think 723 was carried out in an ebb tide of high gas prices,” McCaleb said.

A leader of the opponents said the election was a victory for the people.

“Tonight’s victory is another statement that Oklahomans don’t want to raise taxes,” said Rep. Thad Balkman, R-Norman, one of the founders of Oklahoma Taxpayers United, which fought the fuel tax increase. “The people have spoken.”

Balkman said voters agree with the other side that Oklahoma’s highways and bridges do need help but that raising taxes is not the solution, Balkman said.

“Higher gasoline prices were like putting the final nail in the coffin because this gas tax (proposal) was dead on arrival,” Balkman said.

Oklahomans for Safe Bridges and Roads launched an initiative petition drive last September to put this issue on a statewide election ballot.

Past efforts by some legislators to get similar fuel tax proposals submitted to a vote of the people have failed.

According to its latest reports, the safe bridges and roads group raised more than $2 million to promote passage of the proposal, State Question 723.

Oklahoma Taxpayers United, an opposition group, has raised $142,247 so far in its campaign against SQ 723.

The timing for this initiative petition turned out to be bad.

In the past few months, the prices for gasoline and diesel have soared, climbing above $3 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Recently, Jim Davis, an associate professor of political science at Oklahoma State University, was asked how these fuel prices might affect the vote on SQ 723.

Davis said he didn’t believe that Oklahomans would want to add taxes to already high fuel prices.

McCaleb, chairman of the safe bridges and roads group, said recently he hoped Oklahoma voters “will look past the pain at the pump to see the gain in safety on the roads” when they went to the polls.

Both sides could agree on one thing - Oklahoma’s bridge and highways are in terrible shape and getting worse.

They differed on how to solve the problem.

Proponents said that increasing the fuel taxes would produce about $150 million more a year for the highway program.

McCaleb, a former Republican legislator and state secretary of transportation, and other proponents said the Legislature has never really funded the highway system adequately.

Balkman said the Legislature has demonstrated this past session that it can provide more money for bridges and highways.

He pointed to the passage last session of House Bill 1078, which eventually will provide $170 million more a year for the state’s highway program.

It eventually will result in nearly doubling the money the transportation department gets for the highway program, he said.

Here I go again criticizing a Republican, but Neal McCaleb must have been high when he thought that increasing the gas tax was a good idea.

BTW, the D.C. area is still among the highest prices in the nation. I saw gas for 2.98 a gallon for the first time in weeks today. Last time I filled up it was 3.09.

3.20+ in Upstate NY... we must be getting reamed if you claim that is one of the highest in the nation.

We're at 2.75 now (as opposed to $3.09 at the highest). I refuse to say "back down to" until it's below 2.00 which may be a pipe dream now.

As for the Oklahoma initiative. I bet they set that up a few months ago, before the huge gas hikes in the past couple of months and before the hurricane. It's not like you can just throw a measure on the ballot and have the election tomorrow. Very bad timing for them.

We're in the low-to-mid $2.80s, although there are still a few places charging in the high $2.90s or low $3.00s, and not necessarily by the interstate, either.

Ann Arbor has backslid almost back to pre-Katrina levels. Down to $2.70 which is a nickel more than it was on August 28, the day before landfall. We've been rather limited in our driving over the past few weeks, so we haven't had to buy a tank of gas since the 28th, fortunately. (It pays to live just 3 miles from work)

It was in the works for almost a year. But the plan itself was so flawed that no public official other than McCaleb would speak in favor of it. The Democratic Governor and the Republican Lt. Governor were both "neutral" on the initiative, which is as good as opposing it in the minds of Oklahoma voters.

We were about 40 cents lower before Katrina hit. We are maybe 10 cents lower than labor day weekend, when the prices really spiked. Wonder if they will ever drop.

$ 3.18 was the HIGH in gas price today. All -Time HIGH EST i've ever seen. Gas prices have stayed pretty much the same without any fluctuation since Katrina. Frankly I dont expect it to ever go back down below $ 2.90.

We're down to 2.80 now, still a bit higher than pre-Katrina. I heard about the $5 fears, I'm hoping it's just post-Katrina psychosis driving the speculation.

I got for $2.37 in Dayton, OH yesterday... prices were back up a tad this morning, but that's your normal Thurs. night/Fri. morning gas hike, really.

I guess next year we'll all be fondly remembering the days when gas used to be under $2 a gallon.

there were rumours yesterday that the prices would be jacked up all the way to 1.80$ cdn per liter (5.58$ US per gallon ) from the current 1.09$ cdn per liter we're paying at the moment (3.37$ US per gallon). Lineups formed at about every gas station between work and home (a 20 miles commute) and people almost were starting to get aggressive.

Turns out one gas station (not one chain, one station) in Quebec City upped its price to 1.67$ cdn per liter (5.17$ US per gallon) but nobody else followed. I even read in the paper that the chain (Petro-Canada) never told him to up his price and that it wasn't right for him to do so. Looks like someone tried to make some quick cash

Well, the prices here actually bottomed out around $2.45 for a few days, but they spiked suddenly yesterday, running up to 2.69, so I'm guessing the vultures sense Rita will cover their run-up legitimately. Fortunately, we're still pretty full on both cars, so I'm not anticipating filling up until hopefully prices settle down again after Rita.

Had this exact same thing happen in Lawrence. Was at 2.45 and is back up to 2.69 yesterday. Unfortunately, it's all around town so there's no choice.
