This was a good episode, but I can understand why they are not attracting enough new fans. Without being familiar with this show, Apocalypse Now, and possibly Hearts of Darkness, this would be an awfully bizarre episode.

The whole show is awesome. Its just operating at a different level from most of what's out there, and I for one intend to enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts.

Interesting. I was looking at Hulu+'s online offerings the other day explicitly looking for Community and didn't see it.

Edit: Ah, I see that they can only do it on the computer. I was looking for Roku or Kindle Fire. And they only have the current season, not the back seasons.... that explains it on many levels. I think I was actually searching on my Fire.

I've never seen "Hearts of Darkness" so maybe that's why this past episode wasn't as good as the rest of the season to me.

Agree with you on the anime, felt like I was being forced to watch Dragonball Z or something like that.

What an amazing show. The universe isn't fair when it allows Whitney to continue while this show gets put on hiatus.

There was a post on another site which had a number of clips from the Christmas stuff, but I don't see it. Not really good to here the show was down 12% in the 18-49 demographic.

Off the top of my head I don't know if I'd worry about that too much. 'Tis the season & all that. Best I can tell there's a lot of people in that demo that are simply too busy right now to be in front of the TV. A lot of young parents spent this week at their kid's first school Christmas pageant & what not. I haven't looked but I suspect 18-49 totals are down for the week.

Park and Rec was only down 6%. Whitney was also down while The Office kind of held steady. Even if ratings were down, Community was hit much worse than the shows around it.

I just looked at this week's & last week's number, total audience 18-49 was actually up, not down as I speculated.

Just week to week comparisons, appears that NBC may have gotten Big Banged this week. Last week's repeat ep did a 3.1/9 share, this week's new ep did a 4.7/14 share. Even though Bang was down from its last original episode, that may have been enough to cause the shift for Community week to week, I didn't notice anything seismic in cable that would seem likely to account for it. (I haven't dug more deeply to see if this is an on-going trend or something more serious)

Whatever it was, it was definitely 18-49. Down noticeably there, but down only a tiny bit (3.740 million to 3.616 million) in total viewers. Heck, they may have actually gained audience in the older demos this week.

I would recommend "Mystery Team" to any fans of Donald Glover.

It's on Netflix Streaming.

It's about a team of child detectives - think Encyclopedia Brown - who are all teenagers now, but never really grew up and still think and act like child detectives. They get caught up in a actual murder case and hilarity ensues.

If NBC advertised Community like this it would be the most watched show on TV.

Good news, even if a bit vague:

New NBC chief says 'Community' coming back | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

New NBC chief says 'Community' coming back
  • By DAVID BAUDER
Pasadena, Calif.— After acknowledging that NBC had a "really bad fall," the network's entertainment chief moved swiftly Friday to assure viewers that "Community" and "Law & Order: SVU" aren't leaving.

Although the Thursday night comedy "Community" was taken off the midseason schedule, entertainment president Bob Greenblatt said he wanted to "dispel any notion that it is quietly disappearing." He didn't say, however, when it would be back.

At a news conference, Greenblatt also aired a video clip of star Mariska Hargitay saying she's committed to "Law & Order: SVU" through next year. She'll even get a love interest: Harry Connick Jr. has signed on for several episodes later this season.

For NBC, keeping any audience it still has is important. The fourth-place network has continued its slow decline this fall, with Sunday night football keeping its heart beating. Viewership was off 5 percent from last season, the Nielsen ratings company said.

"We had a really bad fall, worse than I had hoped for but about what I expected," Greenblatt said.
Still, he hopes new shows like "The Voice," "Up All Night" and "Whitney" can provide building blocks for the future, even if they are only modest successes now.

NBC has been outspending its rivals in series development recently, following many years when the network kept such spending down. Greenblatt said NBC's new corporate owners, Comcast Corp., have shown a willingness to invest money and patience in rebuilding the network.

NBC has high hopes for the midseason series "Smash," about the competitive world of Broadway musicals. It debuts Feb. 6. Greenblatt seemingly tried to dampen expectations, given how hard it is to develop hits in network television these days.

"In this day and age, you need four or five shows to help things turn around," he said. "'Smash' could be one of those. I hope it is one of those. If it isn't, we're not going to go into receivership."
Greenblatt did not address reports that NBC is interested in Ryan Seacrest as a potential replacement for Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, whose contract ends this year.

"All of that is premature," he said. "It is our hope and belief that Matt will stay on the show beyond the length of his contract."

Comcast is talking with Seacrest, who plays a big role on the company's E! Entertainment cable network, about different things he could do. One idea NBC would be interested in is a network interview show, much like Barbara Walters has done on ABC.
