That was a very entertaining offseason. Now we'll see if our work has paid off.

As we go toward the preseason, here are a couple reminders (one my fault that it remains on the list):
-we want to move WLB Wilkerson over to SLB, where he should be our starter this season -we can place LT Woolridge onto the IR for the season, meaning we can keep one additional young player on our reserve squad -we have 12 players at DL - partially because there is concern about that position, and partially because there were just a lot of semi-intriguing URFA players there... let's try to use preseason to sort out who might be worth keeping around as our 5th, 6th, 7th guys there... we know we'll have to cut several of these guys |

While we wait to move on, I thought I'd pull up our draft list from 1990 just to take a look at how we did. They say you shouldn't judge a player until 3 years after they were drafted.
Quote:
Edit: My general evaluation: I don't have the game here, but I don't think any of the URFAs are still with us. The only name I recognize is Metz and I think he was cut recently. I don't believe Baker or Wolfe is with us anymore either (I think Blow still is?). The first rounder was a decent pick, but kind of ho-hum. All 3 second round picks IMO were slight reaches. They all are decent players, but nothing special. Wayne Hill was a decent pickup for the 3rd round, no complaints. Wolfe was the steal of the draft, but he's no longer with us so he's benefiting someone else now. Baker was a good pick up for the 6th round, but another cap casualty (I'd be interested to see if he was picked up by another team). Isaac Terry was a steal in the 7th. The only real "star" we got out of this draft (Wolfe), no longer plays on the team. We did get a few starters though who can contribute. Overall I'd give us a B+ for the draft. Allright I am about ready to run the pre season games. As Quik mentioned we have a lot of guys at Dline to evaluate. Davison, Castillo, Ramsey, and Finley will all sit out the pre season to let the other guys get plenty of opportunities to show what they can do.
At LB I will be interested to see how Harden and Peabody do. Our LB corps is getting old very quickly and since it looks like we will have some cap issues this offseason we really need them to show they can contribute. At DB the only position really up for grabs is the Dime Back slot.

Here is a quick recap of how the DLine played.
Code:
Outside of Zessin it was a very uninspiring pre-season for the defensive line in terms of pass rushing. Although Hammond seems to have had a very good pre-season stopping the run which is supposed to be his weak spot. So that is encouraging.

In my Opinion this is how they stacked up (from top to bottom): hammond - cleary a cut above the rest zessin, nelson - decent i guess battle, hill, greer - step behind the rest farrell - terrible. |

Hammond definitely looked good. I wouldn't guarantee he'll develop as well as Wolfe, but he's on that path right now.

cthomer,
I agree for the most part with your thoughts. I am giving Greer a little more slack because he had some success with us last season. I think our active Dline this season will be Finley, Ramsey, Hammond, Davison, Zessin, Castillo, and Greer. We will cut Farrell, Kelly, and Hill. And the remainders will go on the inactive list.

I think Cunningham should probably start at RT. Neither he nor Johnston really stepped up and won the position in preseason, so I figure we stick with they guy from last year. That was the only position I saw on the o-line that was really up for grabs from my view point.

Looks like our former center wanted to prove something in the preseason game against us. |

All-in-All, I'm actually pretty happy with the offense. We put up good numbers overall, and that was with the young QB and no Ox. It continued to prove to me that we just do not have a steady run game without him, although we did fall behind early in several games. I think Coghill also lost any chance he had of being the starter -- anyone want to lobby in his favor?
I agree Bee, Cunningham at RT... Pederson did fine at LT. Of course he's no Wooldridge, but no one expected that. Perea looks good.. I think Im going to start him, possibly with somewhat low PT.. I'm also going to lower McAlister's PT a bit (sorry, probably no 1,000 yarder this year doug )..

RB Keith Baker signed on with the Sacremento Royals. It looks like he'll be the starter behind a BEAST of a FB (averages more YPC than Crawford )... I plan to keep an eye on him and see how he does, I definately liked the kid..

wade,
here are the updated files. The defensive chanegs are all made. You are going to have to cut one guy from the offense. That will get us down to 53. |

You're kidding? How can a player go from asking $14m for the first year all the way down to $970k? That doesn't seem right.

wow- only $970k, they are getting a great deal at that price. Maybe after this season his asking price will have come down a little bit from what he was asking for this past offseason. If it isn't to much we might be able to make a run at signing him again, if we want to.

I'll start a new thread, looks like we're happy and ready to start the real thing... There isn't much up for discussion at this point I hope...

That's one of the problems I have with FOF4. Players ask for huge amounts of money and then after training camp they all sign for the minimum 1 year deal. The gamer can't even compete for them as all the computer teams sign those players immediately after training camp and the gamer only has access to whatever is left. While that can add to the challenge of the game (by forcing the gamer to either pay big bucks or lose the player), it's still a game flaw and could be handled in other ways that would be both challenging and more realistic IMO. At some point in the programming process, it's clear that you just seek to tie up loose ends. That certainly seems to be what happens with big money players who don't get signed. Rather than have them sitting around begging for a lesser deal, they suck it up, sign for one year for peanuts, and try again the next year.
Is it great? No. Realistic? Not really. Does it accomplish the most important goal from the gamer's perspective - eliminating the huge backdoor way to vastly improvbe your team in this game's predecessor versions? Yeah, it basically does that. I'm not thrilled, but I see the thinking there. |
