One of the menu options tests all the pieces of the network connection, and tell you at what point it is failing. I'm not where I can get to my XBox right now, but I think the option is in System Settings.

I found that, but it never got past the first step, saying it couldn't find internet. Unplugged and replugged everything, got a connection. No idea why it wasn't working or why it is working now. /tk

There is a trouble-shooter in the 360 dashboard. Does it tell you where it fails? Connecting to the network at all? Was it working fine yesterday and just started choking today?

Troubleshooter just says it can't connect, doesn't seem to say where it fails. This is the second or third time this has happened. It's the first time that unplugging everything and re-plugging it in has worked, though. Not complaining, I really wanted to watch 30 Rock on Netflix. Next time it happens (I'm sure it'll happen again), I'll make sure to keep an eye on the exact wording in the Troubleshooting and post it.

Dola,
Happened again now. Troubleshooter says "There's a problem with your connection. Select More Info for a description of the problem and how you can fix it (failed between XBox and Network)." So I do that and it tests it and says it can't connect to the network, can't get an IP. So I tell it to try again and this time it connects to network, can't get DNS to go to internet. My router is working fine, I'm hardlined into it right now and doing fine, and green light is flashing on that port (which worked fine this morning at 8 a.m.). I still suspect something in the XBox itself. /tk

DOla, now I tell it to try again and it works just fine.
I got nothing. /tk

You have wireless?
I was getting that too, but come to find out it was the USB port that I had the wireless plugged into on the Xbox went bad so I switched to the front and it worked fine.

I had problems with ports not being open on my router, which prevented me from joining a lot of online games (although I was always able to sign in to XBL). You might want to look into this page for some info on ports that it needs access to: Description of Firewall Ports for Xbox LIVE

I had a similar problem with my Xbox 360 when I first connected it. Every time I turned on the box, I failed to connect to Live. After going to the network settings and running the the connection test, it connected fine and reported a "moderate NAT".
To get around my problem, I configured a static IP on the Xbox, made sure to assign DNS settings, and did the port forwarding in the link above. The "moderate NAT" should change to "open NAT" at this point which should allow normal connections. |

Mine got the RROD last night while playing GH Metiallica.. first song I started playing was "One" and it RRODs.
Put a few towels over it and about 10 mins later I was back in business.. guess I'll be buying an X360 arcade console soon. |

GH Metallica also claimed my 4th RROD yesterday. I figured I would be out of warranty, but the three year extension for RROD was still in effect.

Still no RROD for my Xbox 360. I guess I must be extremely fucking lucky...

No more RROD for me... PS3 ftw.
I had a 360 for two years and finally parted with it after RROD once. I can't believe Game Stop's low trade in prices. Unbelievable that people actually go and trade them in there. I was offered like $70 for my Xbox... no thanks. I ended up getting about $250 for all my stuff on Craigslist. I could have gotten higher had I been a little bit more patient. |

I'm definitely considering buying more games for PS3 from here on out. Although Xbox live is obviously better and more populated with FOFCers than PS3 online.
Decisions, decisions. |

after reading this thread, i went up in the attic and got my 360 down to take a look at it. it broke about a year ago, and xbox wanted $180 to repair it. it was my fourth one, and i told them i'd rather put it in the attic. gamestop said they would give me $40 for it.....
it powers up fine, and i can see all dashboard screens on my tv. the issue is that when i put a disk in, i hear a grinding sound while the on-screen display says "reading". the disk never does get "read".... called them today, and they said they would still fix it for $180 i can't bring myself to send microsoft the money, but i would love to fix it and play some games. someone please help.... Damn $180? That is steep. May as well just buy an arcade and switch your HD over at that price.

I think a new one is, what, $199 and they want to charge $180 to fix it!? Crazy.

If you have a lot of 360 games and selling all of those would result in nearly as big a loss as buying a new system then maybe?
Although if it would make it the fifth one you've had to buy I would just say "screw em." |

And all it probably needs is a new dvd player which are cheap as hell. I wouldn't blame you for not getting another one and going with the PS3.

180 dollars? really?
My launch 360 is out of warranty and I called them a week ago just for precautionary measures. I asked if the system would happen to go out on me how much would it cost to fix. They told me 100 dollars. |

They told me if i did it over the phone or something it was around 120 or 130, but if I did it online it would cost 100.
I wonder if it has to do with the problem that your Xbox is having? I don't recall really giving them a specific problem, though, so that is probably not right. |

I'm wondering if buying a bigger hard drive might help the disc drive last longer. That's the one thing that worries me because it's so loud otherwise. I have one game on the hard drive,NCAA 09, and the game runs so smooth.

I had the coolest MS tech support guy on the phone who told me, we don't ship boxes anymore... well, unless you get angry.. I said, no biggie.. then he says calm down, we'll ship you a box sir.. and laughed.
He told me I would also get a month of XBL for free as well. Why can't all support people be that nice? |

Just for the record, many of those $170 machines that they are selling used are nothing more than reconditioned units that they bought for $40 broken. I agree with you that you run the risk of even a new Arcade having a failure at some point, but you're playing with fire if you purchase a used 360 from Gamestop. That's just asking for trouble. |

Yeah you are almost better off selling them your old one for $40 and just buying a new arcade version for $29 more than they are selling the used ones for...that's what I did.

I had a friend just get his second RROD on a refurbed 360 he bought through ebay......thankfully he had a Square Trade warranty....or not.
Square Trade sent him an email saying after he tried to make his claim saying: "Hey sorry, we don't cover Xbox 360s sold through ebay anymore, because they fail to often, and we haven't since December 2008. Sorry we sold you that warranty, and told you you were covered, some slip through the cracks, here's the money back for your warranty." Ouch! How is that not illegal? They sold him the warranty, and they ARE still warrantying earlier purchased xboxes (and refurbs from ecost or geeks.com), so it's not like they're not warrantying them at all. Even worse, this is actually the second time it's failed, and they covered and fixed the first one, so as far as I'm concerned, THIS xbox didn't come from ebay, it came from Square Trade...but now it's not covered. What the hell? |

I don't know about illegal, but that certainly seems like a breech of contract. I'm sure a lawyer would cost more than a new Xbox, but that is something I might consider going to a lawyer for anyway.

Did he get a contract or a terms of service with his warranty? I know I have seen in warranties before with a statement like "we reserve the right to cancel this warranty at any time for any reason". I am not sure if that would even hold up in court, but it would be interesting to see what language they put in the service agreement.
