If he used the word "cool," it's probably not superfluous -- he shouldn't have to come back after ten guesses and give us a hint that "the word cool means something" - we ought to be working from that assumption from the start.

No problem with guesses -- but if everyone (mob mentality) starts agreeing that we should just build guesses off one part of the clue and not the other part(s), then we're likely getting farther away, not closer.

Also, there are several different varieties of clues in this puzzle. Some are literal, others are strictly wordplay, and some are more subtle or tricky. If one avenue isn't working, try another.

I agree. The clues are always very well done, and it will take nothing other than a full matching to get it right.

Lead Bronco’s got some of this

Lead Bronco = Mike Shanahan = Rocky Mountain High, John Denver?

I can't figure out how Al Cowlings or OJ fit in, and there was only one Bronco so no "lead" Bronco, so now I'm at Shanahan / Elway / the owner and what they may have.

Saint Anothony = founder of the monastic order. What kind of refrain do monks have? Could it be

Wild guess:

Def Leppard - Rock of Ages?

Connection: (The monk at the beginning of the video, uttering those now famous words)

I should post a disclaimer concerning Saint Anthony. I am not Catholic, and was only going by what I've always heard about him as a patron saint. That's my angle for the clue, but it's quite possible he has other saintly associations that don't apply.

Cool miracle to do

Anything related to the 'miracle on ice' perhaps? A reach I'm sure, but just tossing out ideas.

Well, a little digging enlightened me that Catholics often pray to St Anthony for things that are lost and can't be found.

I don't see how much more direct the connection could be in terms of wordplay. But to each his own.

I think the post by Bad-example gave the connection explicitly. It's a similar clue to the one given for Van Halen, "Jump".

To be honest, I didn't catch the connection on that one either, but it makes sense now. I think my biggest confusion with the Devo song was the "to do" part of the quote. Cool-whip, miracle-whip....that I get. Was the "to do" part included to make "whip" into a verb leading into "Whip It"?

I'm not claiming this to be a bad clue. I think Coug just out-clevered me with this one, and I'm trying to catch up.

Oedipal school subject would be English - and we are still lacking the E clue - so maybe it's an English Beat tune. However, I have no idea which one, because there are no other words in the clue to indicate a song and I don't know of an English Beat tune that refers to incest, being blind or solving a riddle.

Mirror in the Bathroom refers to mental illness - that's the best I can do.

Of couse feel free to ignore my post because my guesses so far have been HORRIBLE.

444 = Closer than you might think. Revisit the discussion.

Chess statement = You’ve bounced all around this one, but keep in mind it is a statement

Friday on Saturday = Close

Fun D song = This one is a trap, and you keep falling right into it.

…help them up = Don’t think too hard on this one.

Jack’s critical dance partner = Getting there. This one is perhaps the most complex clue.

Jacksonian squeeze = Getting there.

Lead Bronco’s got some of this = “Lead” doesn’t refer to the coach.

No Hamlet ending = Not much progress here. Don't take all the bait.

Letter Update (since it's not in an easy-to-find spot):

A -
B -
C -
D - Devo, "Whip It"
E -
F -
G - George Harrison, "Got My Mind Set On You"
H - Huey Lewis & the News, "Walking on a Thin Line"

K - Kenny Loggins, "Danger Zone"
L - Loverboy, "The Kid is Hot Tonight"
M - The Motels, "Suddenly Last Summer"
N - Night Ranger, "Sister Christian" (could be R?)
O -
P - Peter Gabriel, "Big Time"
Q - Quarterflash, "Harden my Heart"
R -
S -
T -
U - U2, "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"

Z - ZZ Top, "Sharp Dressed Man"

Thoughts on Oedipal School Subject. "Oedipal" usually refers to the romantic love of one's mother. Oedipus (in Greek Mythology) was prophesized to kill his father (the king) and marry his mother. He ended up doing both of these things and he later blinded himself when he found out.

Now that I have typed all of this...."She Blinded Me With Science" - Thomas Dolby?

I'll confess that I don't do puzzles, so I'm unfamiliar with many of the common puzzle techniques out there. But many of these just don't work for me. It the Lead Bronco one turns out to be Too Much Time on My Hands, that's another one I just don't get. I mean I get the connection that has been made, and it seems plausible, but I would never have gotten it. Same with the Whip It clue.

I think, because my mind is on Attorney Mode 24/7, I'm just too literal with words to be loose enough to make these connections. For instance, I would never think that someone can have some "too much" of anything. You either have too much, or you don't. So my mind wouldn't ever allow me to go there. Of course, that might not be the right answer, but if it is, it would explain why I haven't figured any of these out. Actually, I did get the Sibling one just based on ther Sister connection, but didn't post it. With the Whip It clue, that's more of puzzle technique thing than the actual connection, which I get after the fact.

Anyway, carry on. I'm somewhat enjoying the learning the process, even though I'm frustrated by my inability to participate.

Perhaps D = Dee

as in Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister.

We're not gonna take it?

Just a shot in the dark, that probably killed Jeeber. Whoops. Sorry Jeeber.

Anybody have any thoughts on "No Hamlet ending"? In Hamlet, many of the principals die, Hamlet, his mother, his step-father... The play Hamlet is classified as a tragedy. Plays in those days were either tragedies, or comedies (hence the theater symbol of two masks, one laughing and the other crying). Any other thoughts?

There were ghosts in Hamlet, and at the end nobody busted them....for a crazy longshot, how about Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters?

Well, in Hamlet Laertes used a poisoned sword to poison/kill Hamlet. Hamlet then used the same sword to to poison/kill Laertes. In the meantime, the King had poisoned a drink intended for Hamlet, but the Queen drank it instead. On his death bed Laertes confesses to poisoning the blade, but blames the King for instigating it. IIRC Hamlet then kills the King, avenging Hamlet's father's (Claudio?) death.

However, the clue is NO Hamlet ending, suggesting they all lived happily ever after. So, any songs about poison not working, or swords missing the mark, or supporting the King? Anyone?

Also, an alternative might be hamlet meaning small village.
