Weiland is out for 28 weeks with an ACL Tear, perhaps career ruining. He had been a great, unexpected asset for our team. Without him, our pass rush is MUCH weaker than it was. This comes just 2 games away from the playoffs where he would have been a crucial piece. Besides that, this was another tough fought game. Manuel has really improved from his early season woes. I don't know exact numbers because the files are at home, but I know that much of his green has filled out with red during the season.. as of 4 or 5 weeks ago, it was 25 points higher. Tampa Bay FB Fined $50,000
League officials confirm rumors that FB Edward Levy of the Tampa Bay Torpedoes has been fined $50,000 for "indecent gestures" during yesterdays game against Durham. After reviewing the play, it is obvious what the league is referring to, although no one in the office would confirm it. On 3rd and 5 with 6:20 left in the OT period, Levy takes the handoff. He slides behind LT Bedell. He finds a hole, and turns on afterburners out of nowhere carrying his 6', 242 lbs flying past Mothermouth. As he does so, he turns to Motormouth and raises the middle finger of his left hand, holding it behind him as he ran 29 yards to put his team in FG range for the win. Unfortunately, K Cooper missed the FG attempt on that drive. Levy has been unreachable for comment. Team sources say he spent the night singing some unintelligible song as he drank until sunrise.

Motormouth was heard bragging after the Tampa/Durham game, "That dumbass Levy was more concerned about taunting me than running for a touchdown and winning the game. That's one more reason why I'm a great player. I get into the opponents' heads and they lose their focus. Because of Levy's dumbass play he gave us a chance to win and now he's getting fined too! I hope he doesn't cry too much. Boo hoo boo hoo! What a baby!"

PLAYOFF PICTURE
This is something that I have not spent nearly enough time on. There is no way for youg guys to know how crucial this weeks game became. Before this week we were 10-3. This was good for 2nd in the conference in wins. However, first in the conference was Charleston at 12-1 and leading our division. So, Charleston was upset AGAIN by Baltimore, giving Charleston a 12-2 record on the season and an 0-2 record against Baltimore this year. So, we now have a chance at the division title and home field advantage. Upcoming Games: Tampa Bay: Week 16: Honolulu (7-7) Week 17: Charleston (12-2) Charleston: Week 16: Arizone (4-10) Week 17: Tampa Bay (11-3) So, as you can see, the next two games are VERY crucial for us. If we beat Honolulu, then the season is in our hands. If we can win out, the title is ours. Here is the whole playoff picture: Code:

Week 16 Preview: Tampa Bay Torpedoes(11-3) (-3) AT Honolulu Pacific(7-7) OVERVIEW Anyone who follows the CFL knows that the Pacific are about much-hyped QB Ronnie Tu. Tu is one of the better QB's in the league, leading the league last year in yards (4,300) and TD's (32). This season, he is in the top 10 in most statistical categories. I would not go as far as to say that he has shown himself to be in the elite class of the league that Gordon and Hurst have, but he is a very good QB. Tu has the Honolulu passing offense at 3rd in Passing Yards (3,511), 9th in Yards Per Attempt (6.99), and 14th in Points Per Game (18.8). However, for everything that these islanders have in passing, they lack in running. The team is 25th in Rushing Yards (1,362) and 28th in YPC (3.37). Their top RB, Jeromy Donahue, is a huge 6' 253 lb bruiser, but he lacks the moves and breakaway speed necessary to be an elite back in this league. This top passing attack must compete with one of the top (some would argue THE top) passing defenses in the league. The Torpedoes Defense is 1st in YPA (5.39), 5th in Passing Yards (2,598), and have Defensed 102 passes this year (the next most is 89 by Charleston and only 3 other teams have 70 or more). The big concern is that DE Weiland is out for the season, and possibly longer. Weiland accounted for 41% of the teams sacks (12.0), 45% of the teams hurries (26), and 6% of the teams tackles (42). Without him, Tu is going to have much more time to throw. The Tampa rushing defense should keep Honolulu at the production they are used to since they are 7th in Rushing Yards (1,430) and 15th in YPC (3.74). On the other side of the ball, Honolulu should be able to do its own share of pass disruption as they have all year where they are 9th in YPA (6.22) and 11th in Passing Yards (2,763). However, they are very suseptible to the rush where they are 31st in YPC (4.33) and 28th in Rushing Yards (1,698). This does not bode well for the Pacific as they go up against star RB Alvey he regained his lead for the rushing title (1,354 Yards) playing in his first game back since playing hurt for 3 weeks. As a team, the Torpedoes are 5th in Rushing Yards (1,912) and 11th in YPC (3.91). In their 5 game win streak, QB Manuel has slowly increased the passing game performance. They are still nothing to brag about, but the team is 19th in YPA (6.36) and 26th in Passing Yards (2,488). KEY MATCHUPS HON LT Doug Fisher vs. TBY RDE Dannie Hickerson Hickerson has big shoes to fill. He comes in to start for the injured Weiland. Hickerson has proven to be completely inept on the pass rush through 7 starts on the left side this year where he had 1.5 sacks, 2 blocks, and 2 hurries in 208 Pass plays. He also only managed 11 Tackles. It looks tough to fill those shoes. Passing downs will be manned by Price who has 4.0 Sacks, 2 Blocks, and 8 Hurries in 248 Pass plays. Fisher has struggled a bit agains the pass rush, allowing 11 Sacks in 526 Pass Plays (2.0 Pct). He has been a solid run blocker, with 13/43 (30.2 Pct) KRBs. HON QB Ronnie Tu vs TBY Secondary I have already spoken of the accalades for both sides of this battle. The Secondary will miss Weiland, but I still think they will be too much for Tu. TBY QB Lane Manuel vs HON FS Jesse Van Anden A key injury on the Honolulu defense is starting SS Paul Dover who seperated his should in last week's loss to Las Vegas. Van Anden has played in 46 pass plays this season, with 1 Defensed and 3 Caught. This 3rd round Rookie out of Cheyney did not expect to be starting this year. Fortunately for him, Manuel is known for making costly mistakes now and then so he may have a good chance to learn. KEYS TO WINNING Tampa Bay Torpedoes Code:
Code:
FINAL THOUGHTS This game is critical for the Torpedoes. If we win this game, we our position in the playoffs in our own hands. I think that we just matchup much better than the Pacific do. Our strength on offense is the rushing game, which is their weakness. I think we will do our best to exploit this aspect. PREDICTION Tampa Bay by 14

I think these two major injuries on defense are really hurting us. INJURY NEWS: Code:

Week 17 Preview: Charleston Sixpacks(13-2) (-3) AT Tampa Bay Torpedoes(11-3) OVERVIEW Well, after losing last week and cementing our position in the playoffs (as in as a wild card and not a divisional winner) this game loses a lot of meaning. I would REALLY like to beat Charleston. However, it is much more important to be healthy. So, all of our key players will be sitting or taking reduced roles. To be honest, I'm not even going to go further in this preview because it will be so out of whack. The bad affect of this is we are basically handing Alvey's potential rushing title away. He is currently 1 yard ahead of Albany's Still. Albany is fighting for their division, so expect the rushing title to not reside in Tampa this year.

Week 17 Review: Charleston Sixpacks(13-2) (-3) AT Tampa Bay Torpedoes(11-4) HIGHLIGHTS Again, I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this game since we rested most of our starters. To be expected, we got our butts handed to us against the best starters in the league with our backups. They actually performed admirably all things considered. SCORE: CHR 33 TBY 20 [b]FOF PLAYER OF THE GAME[b] CHR QB Gordon: 19 for 37, 206 Yards, 3 TD, 0 Int, 0 Sacks, 10 Defensed, 6 Hurries, 1 Blocked OTHER KEY PLAYERS TBY QB Shephard: 20 for 35, 267 Yards, 2 TD, 3 Int, 3 Sacks, 5 Defensed, 3 Hurries, 1 Blocked WR Stroman: 10 Catches, 148 Yards, 1 TD DUR SYNOPSIS Even resting folks, we did get a minor injury to backup TE Russell. Our passing game seems to have taken an interesting turn without Denning. We seem to have quite a bitter higher ypa and big plays without him. INJURY NEWS: Code:

Just a quick, short update...
As expected, we are a wild card team in the playoffs. We ended at 11-5 and will play 8-7-1 Hartford in the wild card round, in Hartford. The schedule of games will be sped up, so the game will be played Friday night.. I hope to have a preview up by tomorrow morning.

Go Torpedoes!
Man, that's really sad, such a great season start, and then losing the division one week ahead and ending up 11-5, where 12-4 was much more reasonable. Pulling for you to have your revenge against Charlston in this season.

Yeah. I hated to give away that game, but it would have been a disaster if Alvey or Manuel or one of our other key players went out in a meaningless game. 13-3 with the division would have been MUCH better... The Honolulu game is what is getting me more than the Charleston game.

Baltimore goes into rebuilding mode as we're projected to be at $10 mil over the cap next year. We had a two-year run for the championship which failed, and will have to trim the roster now. Mainly it's Barbieri's contract that ties us down - his cap number goes up almost $7 mil now...

That is the total number of victories your 16 opponents had (divisional opponents' records are therefor counted twice, the 10 remaining opponents once). Easier strenght of schedule (less victories by opponents) means picking higher.

Wild card Week Preview: Tampa Bay Torpedoes(11-5) (-4) AT Hartford Attack(8-7-1) OVERVIEW Well, we did it. We went from 7-9 and made it to the playoffs. We had the second best record in the conference. Too bad the first best record was also in our division (Charleston Sixpack). So, that leaves us where we are. First round of the playoffs having to play an away game against an 8-7-1 Attack squad. The Attack finished 1/2 a game ahead of a Boston squad that finished 8-8. This will be our second game against Hartford this season. We defeated the Attack at home in week 3 in our biggest margin of victory of the season, 33-11. The game was one of Alvey's breakout games in which he gained 154 yards and scored 2 TDs. In addition, Burgess tied a league record with 4 Int's in the game. For the game, QB Oberg was a mess with 5 Ints thrown. For the season, Hartford's offense has been very one dimensional. They are 30th in Rushing Yards (1247) and 25th in YPC (3.43). However, they are 1st in Passing Yards (4352) and 8th in YPA (6.97). This provides an interesting matchup for the Tampa Bay defense that ended 12th in Rushing Yards (1738) and 22nd in YPA (3.88) along with a Pass Defense that ended 9th in Passing Yards (3043) and 1st in YPA (5.45). So, one of the best passing offenses against one of the best passing defenses. I suspect that despite the loss of Weiland and Montalvo, the Tampa Defense will make it another long day for Oberg. On Defense, Hartford has not excelled anywhere. They struggled relatively heavily against the run, ending 28th in Rushing Yards (1934) and 23rd in YPC (3.89). In addition, they ended up 22nd in Passing Yards (3395) and 21st in YPA (6.60). The Torpedoes relied heavily on Alvey and the rushing game, where they ended 6th in Rushing Yards (2087) and 12th in YPC (3.89). The passing game was not stellar, but improved as the season went on. In the end, Tampa was 25th in Passing Yards (2989) and 18th in YPA (6.54). A note of interest, when TE Denning went down it took away our leading receiver in receptions. However, it seems to have opened Manuel's eyes to other receivers down field and we have had more big passing plays. KEY MATCHUPS HAR QB James Oberg vs. TBY FS Wilton Burgess Burgess had Oberg's number earlier this season. As mentioned, he tied a league record with 4 Ints in one game. However, he has lost his partner in crime, SS Montalvo, and the leading pass rusher DE Weiland. It will be interesting to see if he can get the same kind of read on the second year QB out of Arizona. Oberg has been interception prone all season (23 Ints), but also has had a lot of success finding the end zone (27 TDs). If Oberg plays the way he did the rest of the season this year, it could spell trouble for the Torpedoes. TBY RB Elias Alvey vs HAR DLine Alvey has had trouble duplicating his efforts against Hartford earlier this season. If he can play the ball-control game again this week, then everything else should fall into place. TBY LT Kevin Ackerman vs HAR DE Andrew Russell Anyone who follows this team knows that Manuel tends to struggle against a heavy pass rush. Russell has been the leading pass rush specialist on this Attack team all season. He has 8 Sacks, 9 Blocked Passes (Tied for 1st), and 30 Hurries (Tied for 1st). In the week 3 game (Ackerman's second game of his career), Ackerman gave up 2 Sacks and was 1/3 on KRBs. This matchup could mean hell for Manuel. KEYS TO WINNING Tampa Bay Torpedoes Code:
Code:
FINAL THOUGHTS It's do or die now. This has been a break-out year for the Torpedoes, but it means nothing if we go out in the first round. Time to put up, or shutup. PREDICTION Tampa Bay by 14

Well then, hope I play you next week.. That stinks for me though.. I hate that I'm the #4 speed despite being the 2nd best team in the conference... that's life though!

To add to the suspense... This was one of the most exciting games of the season -- for better or worse... I will try to get the review done on my lunch break...

TBY RB Elias Alvey vs HAR DLine Looking at the stats, this was a bit of a push. The DLine dominated the OLine, but Alvey did enough to get by. TBY LT Kevin Ackerman vs HAR DE Andrew Russell Just look at the stats. Russell destroyed Ackerman. I honestly think that Russell single-handedly is the reason this game was as close as it was. SYNOPSIS Wow... Tough game... I can only hope that this was our worst game of the playoffs. Losing Bedell could really hurt as that was the strength of our running game and little pass rush came from that side. INJURY NEWS: Code:

And as Sov alluded to...
Since Detroit won, Charleston will play Detroit. I will go to Albany. Preview to come... hopefully I will have time. Buccaneer is going to be filling in for me. I don't know if you all can convince him to keep up with this while I'm gone from Wed-Tue.

Divisional Playoffs Week Preview: Tampa Bay Torpedoes(12-5) (-1) AT Albany Engineers(11-5) OVERVIEW The first round was a tough game in which we suffered another serious late season injury. With the strength of our rushing game and rock in the passing game gone, it shifts our offense a bit. Particularly with a DE and a NT that both had over 15 hurries this season. On the other hand, Albany is missing their starting TE, starting WILB, and their starting QB is questionable with Severe Depression (a real wild card injury there). The Torpedoes overall rankings did not change due to the last game being a preseason, so I will not bore you going through their numbers again. The Engineers, on the otherhand, have quietly been one of the best teams in the league. All of their losses were by 10 points or less, and they have beaten the likes of some of the best in the league such as the Sacramento Dragons (13-3 on the season). Albany is solid across the board, except that their rush defense has not been tested this year. The rush defense is 3rd in Rushing Yards (1522), but they are 1st in Rushing Attempts (386). The real indicator is that their rush defense is 25th in YPC (3.94). The pass defense has been solid, despite also being relatively untested at 5th in the league in attempts (477), they are 6th in YPA (6.08). On offense, they are one of the tops in the league everywhere. The Engineers are tied for 6th in YPC (4.07) and have the rushing title holder for this season in Jonathon Sill (1536 Yards). Although they are 22nd in Pass Attempts, when they pass it is very successful at 7.27 YPC, good for 4th in the league. Their QB, Rocky McFarland, is 5th in the league in QB Rating (90.1) and runs this team very efficiently. KEY MATCHUPS ALB QB Rocky McFarland vs. TBY DLine The last few weeks without Weiland the TBY DLine has been interesting. They have gotten a lot of hurries from a lot of positions, but have had difficulty finishing with sacks. However, they are up against the most sacked QB in the league this year in McFarland. In addition, if McFarland leaves the game due to his depression, his backups are basically not even serviceable. TBY RB Elias Alvey vs ALB DLine Again with the DLine. Alvey, in my opinion, is the key to this game. Manuel is not going to take this game over. Alvey came up short last week, and only has a great defensive performance to thank for that win. But the Engineers offense is not going to roll-over and suddenly become non-dominant. TBY LT Kevin Ackerman[Rookie] vs ALB DE Lenny Shepherd[Rookie] These two rookies will be in the spotlight this week. Neither of them have taken the league by storm this year, but they have both grown immensely as the year progressed. Ackerman started all games except for the first and has a 40.4 BPCt, but a 1.6 SPct. Shepherd got the starting nod later in the year, and has only started 6 games. In that time he has 7 Tackles, 7 Assists, 1 Sack, 2 Blocks, and 4 Hurries for a PRPct of 3.9. Either one could turn the tide of this game with the emphasis taken off of the right side of the TBY Offensive Line. KEYS TO WINNING Tampa Bay Torpedoes Code:
Code:
FINAL THOUGHTS This game scares me. A lot. I was worried enough when I thought I would have to play Charleston this week. Now I may have to go through Albany (who honestly, I have overlooked all season because I have not had to play them) and Charleston to make it to the championship game. This will definately be a tough road. I think we can do it, but some balls definately have to bounce our way. PREDICTION Tampa Bay by 1

Again, I head out of town Wed morning. I wanted to get ahead of the game on this since I have to pack tomorrow, etc.
When I come back, we may already be in the heat of the off-season. I may not get as much analysis written up there as I'd like because I'll be closing on my new house two days after I get back, but I'll do the best I can. Anyway. Buccaneer now has the keys to the asylum, so like I said, harass him if you want postings of the playoff results. Otherwise you can check the message board or hopefully 3ric will continue to do his brief summaries in the main CFL Dynasty thread.

A 28-3 rout of Albany, impressive! QB Lane Manuel had a good game (with 72% completions, 222 yds and 2 TDs passing, 51 yds rushing), Alvey ran for 85 yds, but the defense won the game by making life miserable for the Engineers' QB Rocky McFarland, sacking him seven times.
Next time: the Conference finals at Charleston on Sunday night.

In a heartbreaker, the Torpedos almost won over Charleston, only to get tied with 20 seconds left, and lost possession (and the game) on a fumble with 13 seconds left. The offense struggled against the Sixpacks as Alvey ran for 77 yds on 29 carries and QB Manuel had only 113 yds passing. The defense kept Tampa in the game by intercepting Tim Gordon three times and holding him to 221 yds passing, while shutting down the running game completely.

Thanks, I learned more about the game (and the playoffs) here than in all of the threads at CFL. I radically changed the gameplan to be much more aggressive and it almost paid off. I don't know what could have been done on offense, though. |
