Ed Gale Selected 1st Overall

BROOKLYN, NY. June 16, 1914 - Ed Gale, the 23-year-old LSU graduate and Boston native was the first player selected yesterday in the 1914 Amateur Baseball Draft in New York. The 6'5" right-handed-pitcher was widely considered to be one of the best players in the draft, and almost certainly the top pitcher.

Mr. Gale is expected to command a high signing bonus if Brooklyn can sign the phenom.

The United Baseball Association is right in the middle of it's season, and things are exciting in both leagues. The Pittsburgh Rebels have retained their lead, but the Whales and Kansas City aren't too far behind. Chicago, who were on a 5-game winning streak heading into the all-star break will need to keep the momentum going to stay close.

Chicago, Boston, and Detroit have been battling it out for the last month, but still are all within 1/2 game of each other. It will be interesting to see if the Orphans, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 1913 season, trade for a right-handed bat before the July 31st deadline. While the club is 38-13 against right-handed pitching, they are just 8-18 against lefties.

Richard von Blucher Out of Action

BOSTON, MA. July 17, 1914 - "Sore." That's how Richard von Blucher described his situation to the Boston press after he got a strained oblique colliding with a player at a base against the Saints. Team officials say they expect von Blucher to be out of commission for about 5 weeks.

von Blucher on the season is hitting .346 with no home runs. His stats include 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. The news is not good for Boston, who have lost a stunning 11 of their last 14 games. They have fallen all the way to 8 games back.

Will Eberle Out for 8 Weeks

CHICAGO, IL. July 23, 1914 - Will Eberle of the Chicago Orphans was injured in today's game against Philadelphia and had to be helped off the field by the trainers. The initial diagnosis is a herniated disc and he is expected to be out for up to 8 weeks. It happened while Eberle was colliding with a player at a base. "It hurt a lot, to be honest. I just hope it heals soon and I can get back on the field."

Looking at his season stats, Eberle has compiled a .330 batting average and a .458 on-base percentage, while hitting 2 home runs and driving in 57 runs. The Orphans, who have recently pulled into first place, will surely miss his services.

All Quiet on the Trade Front

NEW YORK, NY. July 31, 1914 - While we weren't expecting a flurry of trades this off-season, we certainly thought there would be some activity. The noon deadline has passed, and no trades have been reported to the league office.

The Chicago Orphans were the team that many fans were looking at as the team that could make a big move, but in the last few weeks they've pulled 7 and 1/12 games ahead. The club has struggled against left-handed pitching, going 11-19 so far.

In the Federal League, the Whales have a 6 game lead over the Newark Peppers which has made Charles Weeghman surprisingly content with his ball club.

What a July it has been. Pittsburgh and Boston, the two clubs who were on top of the world in the first half of the season have fallen all the way to 4th place in their respective leagues.

The two Chicago clubs, the Whales and the Orphans, have taken first place and are now in control heading into the final third of the campaign.

Baltimore Manager Gets the Pink Slip; Montoya Let Go

BALTIMORE, MD. August 1, 1914 - Having reportedly lost the team weeks ago, it was no shock when Baltimore club called a press conference today to announce the firing of manager Alfonso Montoya. Commenting on his firing, the always candid and honest Montoya said, "I was brought in here to win and just didn't get it done. I have no one but myself to blame".

Jonathan Webster, 45, has been hired for the job.

Stiles was excited after the victory and told the press, "I want to get a hit every time up. I want to get a hit every game I play. I want to win every game for the greatest fans in the world, Orphans fans!"

Gilbert Stiles hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, struck out in the 4th and flied out in the 7th.

For the year Stiles is batting .337.

St. Paul Stops Stiles's Hit Streak

CHICAGO, IL. August 5, 1914 - All good things must come to an end -- and so it was today for Gilbert Stiles as he saw his 32-game hitting streak end. He went hitless in 2 at-bats at the hands of the Saints. It wasn't all bad for the 27-year-old shortstop and the Chicago Orphans, as they defeated St. Paul 3-0 at Landgraf Park to extend their lead in the United League to 9 and 1/2 games.

When asked about his hitting streak, a smiling Stiles laughed and said, "I guess my luck ran out today."

This season Stiles is batting .335 with no home runs. His totals include 54 RBIs and 57 runs scored.

James Twirls No-Hitter Against St. Paul

BOSTON, MA. August 14, 1914 - The Boston Americans and their fans had a lot to celebrate today as 25-year-old hurler Dan James no-hit the St. Paul Saints 3-0 at American Grounds.

"He mixed his pitches well, hit his spots...and got some help from above," said his pitching coach. "Dan really took it to another level today."

On his record-setting day James had 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

His manager added, "I don't remember a better pitched game. And how about our defense, too. We played some good 'D' today."

James, a Florida native, has been with Boston since the inaugural 1912 season. He's progressively gotten better, going from a 4.60 ERA in 1912 to a solid 2.92 ERA, and of course a no-hitter, so far this season. But he's still a player that's gotten panned by the Boston press for being lazy. "James will show up to practice on time, but will often look like he's not even trying as he and the rest of the team do calisthenics," said a reporter who covers the team.

Whether those reports are true or not, James officially has a place in the UBA record book.

This year James has compiled a 10-12 record with a 2.92 ERA.

Pittsburgh Hopeless Against Castleman

BALTIMORE, MD. August 24, 1914 - The strong arm of Alex Castleman dealt a lot of misery to the Rebels. He tossed a complete-game shutout to spark the Baltimore Terrapins to a 8-0 win. In today's contest at Exposition Park, Castleman limited Pittsburgh to 1 hit and had 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Kansas City Pitcher Nick Ray Hurt

KANSAS CITY, MO. August 25, 1914 - The Kansas City Packers were dealt a severe blow when Nick Ray was hurt throwing a pitch recently in a game against the Brooklyn Tip-Tops. After the game, the team doctor reported Ray might have to spend a lengthy time on the disabled list. Today doctors confirmed it, ruling the 23-year-old starting pitcher out for the rest of the season with a torn tendon in his elbow. They indicated it would take Ray at least 13-14 months to heal, meaning he will miss the rest of this season and likely all of next season.

Ray, jut 23, has had the misfortune of being on a rather poor team, but he has been the club's best pitcher in the three years of the UBA. In his career, he has a 2.26 ERA but a record of 49-53. Ray really took a step in his second season. In 1912, Ray finished with an ERA of 3.60 an 42 strikeouts in 37 games starterd. But in 1913, he started 43 games and finished with 2.73 ERA and a whopping 166 strikeouts.

The Packers and the entire league will miss having Ray's quality arm in the fold. We wish him a speedy recovery and can't wait to see him back on the field.

Ed Gale Impresses in First Month

BROOKLYN, NY. August 30, 1914 - Ed Gale is used to tough challenges. Born in Boston, Gale played amateur baseball throughout his teens, even playing with his father on the Charlestown Shipwrights, a team formed by employees of Daly & Moore.

Wanting to pursue an education, he attended Louisiana State University, a small state college that has just 1,500 students. But it wasn't easy for Gale. Studying to be a civil engineer, Gale dealt with racism throughout his four years. But he didn't let it deter him. He graduated with honors.

However, Gale's passion was baseball. He registered for the United Baseball Association's 1914 Amateur Baseball Draft and was selected with the first pick by the Brooklyn Tip-Tops.

On the 4th of August. Ed Gale made his debut, pitching a complete game while giving up just 4 hits and 2 earned runs. On the 21st, he pitched a complete game while giving up just 1 hit. Over the last month, the 23-year-old is 3-2 with a 1.82 ERA.

Meanwhile, 1913's top pick, shortstop Roman Edison, is having a tough time adjust to the professional game. The Terriers youngster made his debut this season, and in 36 games he's hit just .254 with an on-base average of only .284.

Charlestown Shipwrights, that's a great team name. Also like how you've done the all-star game setup. Neat idea to make it just two teams of 9 players each.

Fant Has Hot Hand, Bangs 5 Hits

BUFFALO, NY. September 15, 1914 - Buffalo third baseman Bob Fant could do no wrong in yesterday's 13-12 win over the Tip-Tops as he collected 5 hits.

"In every one of his at-bats things were in his favor... he got hitter's counts," said Brooklyn skipper Gus Trause after the game.

Fant agreed. "The key is getting ahead. Once you get ahead, it makes it a lot easier because you get a better pitch to hit. You know the pitcher has to come in with it. And you're ready."

Bob Fan singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

So far this season Fant has put up a .333 batting average with 185 hits, 4 home runs and 103 RBIs. Brooklyn is 27 and 1/2 games out in the Federal League with a 61-83 record.

Whales Headed Back to Series

CHICAGO, IL. September 17, 1914 - The Chicago Whales have won the Federal League pennant and are headed back to the Presidents Cup Series!

The club has a record of 90-56, and with eight games left to play they have a good chance of beating their 94 wins of last season.

Charles Weeghman's team has had a winning record every month and have always been in the top half of the standings, but it was just a month ago that they entered a month in first place. Pittsburgh, who dominated the first half of the season, have gone 24-41 after the All-Star contest and have fallen all the way to 6th place. Kansas City was also ahead of the Whales at one point, but are 29-34 in the second half, falling to 5th.

The Whales, after finishing the first half 47-35, have done even better after mid-summer, going 43-21 thus far. Now eight games above Newark, they have clinched the Federal League pennant and will have a shot to repeat in the series.

Inter-City Series Official as Orphans Clinch

CHICAGO, IL. September 25, 1914 - With a 8-1 victory over the 2nd place Detroit Wolverines, the Chicago Orphans have clinched the United League pennant and will face off against their cross-city rival Whales in the 1914 Presidents Cup Series.

Winners of the 1912 series, the Orphans are veterans of the Presidents Cup Series. They know the pressure that comes from fans and the media. But this time will be different. The UBA hasn't seen a Chicago-Chicago or a New York-New York match-up yet, and based on how excited the city has been for this since both teams took first place, it might be a completely different atmosphere than the players are used to.

1914 Presidents Cup Series: Chicago Whales

CHICAGO, IL. September 27, 1914 - The Chicago Whales have had an interesting run to the 1914 Presidents Cup Series. While they certainly played well and can pat themselves on the back, they have to at least give the Pittsburgh Rebels a tip of the cap.

The Rebels, who were in first place on July 1st, proceeded to go 9-17 in the month of July and then finished 31-43 after the break. The Whales, on the other hand, improved as the season went on, going 47-25 after the break.

On offense, the Whales led the Federal League in batting average (.265), on-base average (.347), runs (700), walks (637), and has the fewest strikeouts (449). Spencer Cool, 36, was the general on offense with a .333 average and 84 RBI in 150 games. Larry Bostick was great as usual, hitting .324 with 68 RBI but getting on-base at a stunning .476 clip by walking 122 times.

On the mound, the staff's 2.32 ERA was the best in the Federal League. They had the fewest amount of walks and the most strikeouts, as well. The ace this year was undoubtedly 35-year-old Jim Kasper. The lefty went 23-11 with a stunning 1.66 ERA and a whopping 208 strikeouts. Of course, Eric Searle wasn't bad either, going 25-11 with a 2.37 ERA.

The Whales are looking to repeat, and if they do, they'll forever be known as the first UBA team to do so. Here is the lineup for the north-siders.

1. 3B Ralph Harrison (.279, 3 HR, 58 RBI, 80 SB)
2. SS Spencer Cool (.333, 30 2B, 84 RBI)
3. RF Lawrence Bostick (.324, 19 3B, 68 RBI, 17 SB)
4. 1B Erik Langlois (.264, 5 HR, 77 RBI)
5. LF Dustin Dickerson (.273, 2 HR, 72 RBI, 66 SB)
6. 2B Harry Kempf (.286, 73 RBI, 38 SB)
7. CF Jim Bertrand (.246, 41 RBI, 13 SB)
8. C Danny Eliason (.238, 77 RBI)

LHP Jim Kasper (23-11, 1.66 ERA, 208 K)
RHP Eric Searle (25-11, 2.37 ERA, 190 K)
RHP Tom Pooler (19-14, 2.50 ERA, 189 K)
LHP Bill Cumberbatch (18-10, 2.60 ERA, 128 K)

The Whales play their games at the north-side Weeghman Park. The park was renovated last off-season and now holds 40,000 people. It's a pitchers park, with deep power alley's but a short right field porch.

Left Line: 364 ft., 8 ft. wall
Left Field: 367 ft., 8 ft. wall
Left-Center: 499 ft., 8 ft. wall
Center: 420 ft., 4 ft. wall
Right-Center: 394 ft., 4 ft. wall
Right Field: 342 ft., 8 ft. wall
Right Line: 321 ft., 8 ft. wall

The Whales wear white tops and pants with black pinstripes adorning both. A black "C" with "FEDS" written in the middle adorns the left breast. Players wear blank black caps and black stockings.

The team is owned by 40-year-old Charles Weeghman, a restaurateur from Chicago. The club is managed by Arnie Simpson. The 53-year-old is in his second season with the Whales and has one Presidents Cup trophy.

1914 Presidents Cup Series: Chicago Orphans

CHICAGO, IL. September 27, 1914 - The Orphans started off slow, going 12-12 in the month of April and finishing the month looking up at five teams in the standings. But May was rock solid, and the club went 20-9 and leaped into first place. A 14-10 June was good, but Boston's was better, and the club entered the hot summer back just 1/2 a game.

Chicago's United League representative then torched their competition under the scorching summer sun, finishing July with a 22-5 record and 7 and 1/2 games up. After taking over first place, the Orphans never looked back. Even though they struggled slightly in the final month, they still finished a solid 4 and 1/2 games over 2nd-place Detroit.

On offense, the Orphans led the United League in batting average (.277), on-base average (.367), runs (772), and walks (713). Will Eberle, the clubs third-baseman, missed 8 weeks due to a herniated disc in his neck, which wasn't a huge surprise. The 35-year-old cleanup hitter has had a bad history of injuries. Last season, he missed five months and played just 62 games. In his 107 games this season, the veteran hit .322 with a .449 on-base average and stole 37 bases.

On the mound, it was the Dave Shipman show. Last year Herbert Gardener of Boston won 28 games, and many thought that could be a long-lasting record. Shipman had something to say about that though, setting a new record for wins with 32. His 2.20 ERA is the highest in his UBA career, but his team picked him up every time out. The 29-year-old has much more devastating stuff in this 1914 campaign. Consider the fact that in 1912, he pitched 297 innings and stuck out just 54 batters. This year, the hurler pitched 376 innings and struck out 190 hitters.

The Orphans are looking to become the number one team in Chicago, and here's the lineup they'll use to do it.

1. CF Kirby Shafer (.298, 62 RBI, 60 SB)
2. RF Bob Henke (.288, 5 HR, 72 RBI, 17 SB)
3. 2B Gilbert Stiles (.327, 74 RBI, 35 SB)
4. 3B Will Eberle (.322, 60 RBI, 37 SB)
5. LF Chad Abernathy (.329, 4 HR, 80 RBI, 32 SB)
6. 1B Mack Baker (.265, 27 2B, 7 HR, 116 RBI)
7. C Eric Matney (.265, 60 RBI)
8. SS Don Carey

RHP Dave Shipman (32-8, 2.20 ERA, 190 K)
RHP Ernie Wright (19-15, 2.75 ERA, 107 K)
LHP Joe Vincent (13-15, 2.97 ERA, 125 K)
RHP Larry Cowell (15-15, 3.31 ERA, 110 K)

The Orphans play their games at O'Connor Park. The park holds 20,000 seats and has room along the field for extra spectators. It's a hitters park, with extremely short right and left-field lines. It's a haven for left-handed pull hitters.

Left Line: 286 ft., 13 ft. wall
Left Field: 339 ft., 13 ft. wall
Left-Center: 392 ft., 13 ft. wall
Center: 445 ft., 13 ft. wall
Right-Center: 384 ft., 13 ft. wall
Right Field: 322 ft., 13 ft. wall
Right Line: 261 ft., 13 ft. wall

The Orphans wear gray tops and pants. "Chicago" is written in red across the chest. Players wear blue caps with a red "C" and blue stockings.

The team is owned by 55-year-old Jack A. O'Connor, an automobile magnate from Chicago. The club is managed by Victor Estrada. The 34-year-old is in his third season with the Orphans and has one Presidents Cup trophy.

Victor Estrada Leaves Pitcher to Hit in 9th

The Orphans led early, but the Whales salvo of hits in the 7th inning put them up by four runs. The Orphans clawed their way back, and entered the bottom of the 9th down 6-5. An infield lead-off single looked promising, and then a walk and two sacrifice hits brought pitcher John Falkner to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd.

Surprisingly, Orphans manager Victor Estrada elected to keep him at the plate instead of pinch hitting. He hit a lazy fly ball to center-field to end the game, and the decision could lead to some questioning by the fans.

I love this, please keep going.

I'm curious, how do you play things out? Have you taken control of any team yourself or are you letting the AI do all the wheeling and dealing? Do you watch any of the games play out or is it all simmed and you just check boxes?

I do a little of everything, but I do not control one team (though I do have a game in the same universe where I do manage a specific team). However, at the trade deadline, I'll make trades for every team that I think needs another piece or needs to sell aging players. It means less player movement overall, which is sort of a bummer, but it makes every trade make sense, at least to me. It lets me make cool stories for the players.

I pretty much sim everything and keep my eye on the standings/news every day. Whenever something important happens, I post it in here. At the end of the season, I'll almost always watch the games that are big factors in the pennant race and I watch every playoff game.

Estrada: "I Trusted Falkner"

CHICAGO, IL. October 2, 1914 - Late last night, Orphans skipper Victor Estrada answered the media's most asked question. Why did he leave John Falkner, a pitcher, in to hit in the 9th?

"I trusted Falkner," said the red-faced Estrada. "I don't know why I'm even answering your questions. I'm the manager. I have to live with my decision."

Down 6-2 in the 7th, the Orphans fought their way back to within one. In the bottom of the 9th, Chad Abernathy and Eric Matney got on base with a single and base-on-balls, respectively. The 8th hitter, Don Carey, hit a dribbler down the third-base line and was thrown out, but the play allowed Abernathy and Matney to move into scoring position.

With two outs, everyone expected to see a pinch-hitter, but Falkner, who came in at the beginning of the 9th to replace Ernie Wright, walked to the plate with bat in hand.

"Falkner can handle a bat," Estrada added. "When he was with Philly in '12, he hit .381. Only 20, 21 at-bats. But, he had a couple doubles I remember."

That was 1912 though. In 14 at-bats this season, the 23-year-old Falkner hit just .071.

"The past is the past. I can't change my decision. I trusted him to do something with the bat. He made contact, but it went right towards center-field."

The Orphans and Whales are tied at one game a piece.

A pitching battle took place yesterday at O'Connor Park in Chicago. Playing for the go-ahead win in the series, the two pitchers were relentless.

For the Whales, it was Jim Kasper, who pitched a complete game shutout, giving up 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7 on 121 pitches. The Orphans sent Joe Vincent to the mound, who did his absolute best to counter but came up just short. Vincent pitched a complete game, giving up 6 hits, 1 unearned run, and 1 walk while sitting down 3.

Vincent's defense let him down in the top of the 7th, when leadoff man Spencer Cool reached on an error by Orphan's first baseman Gilbert Stiles. Two batters later, Quinton Benjamin drove in Cool to take the lead.

Gilbert Stiles led the way for his club yesterday as the Orphans tied the series at two with a 7-5 victory. 19,820 looked on as Stiles went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. The infielder, who played second and first yesterday, is hitting a whopping .786 in the series so far.

The Whales, on the other hand, are really struggling at the plate, with just two hitters with 10 or more at-bats hitting over .250. To make matters worse, the defense committed four errors yesterday. Just 4 of Eric Searle's 7 runs given up were earned.

Today is an off-day for the two Chicago clubs. Tomorrow, the series will resume at Weeghman Park.

Tom Pooler, the 19-year-old who pitched so masterfully in the Whales 1913 Presidents Cup Series victory and this regular season was roughed up today, giving up 10 hits, 8 earned runs, and walking 9 in just 6 innings of work.

It's a shame, considering the fact that the Whales offense finally woke up, scoring 7 runs after being somewhat non-existent in the first four contests.

Chad Abernathy was a key to the Orphans attack, despite having no hits! Abernathy went 0 for 4 in his official at-bats, but was walked and hit by a pitch. The left-fielder drove in 2 runs and scored 3 times.

Whales Win 16-Inning Affair

What an exciting finish between these two clubs yesterday evening. In the stunning 16-inning contest, 117 batters stepped to the plate, 36 men were left on base, 6 pitchers took the mound, and over 350 pitches were thrown.

The man of the match was Jim Kasper, who's arm looked like it must have been made of metal. He went 12 innings, giving up just 5 hits and 2 runs, with neither of them being earned.

One thing is for sure. It will be hard for future contests to live up to last night's match.

After giving up a run on a double and then a single in the top of the 16th, the Whales came to the plate for their final chance.

First, on a full count, Erik Langlois dribbled one down the first-base line and used his speed and hustle to beat the throw. Spencer Cool came to the plate, and on another full-count, he drew the walk.

With runners on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs, it was up to Harry Kempf. After fouling off two pitches, Kempf was in an 0-2 hole. The third pitch came in, and the crack of the bat was deafening. The ball shot off the bat directly down the right-field line. The umpire pointed to his right, signaling that the ball was indeed fair. Langlois crossed the plate easily, but Spencer Cool needed to turn on his jets.

The ball came in, but not before a sliding Cool cross the plate. Kempf did it, driving in the winning run on a game-winning triple.

Despite committing 3 errors, the Whales topped the Orphans 8-6 in their contest at Weeghman Park yesterday afternoon in large part to Ernie Wright's 6 walks.

Larry Bostick, the 28-year-old lefty, charged the Whales offense with a stellar 4-for-5 game, driving in 3 runs and scoring one himself. The right-fielder is now hitting .435 in this year's series.

The Whales will play one more at Weeghman Park, and a win would clinch the series victory for them.

The Chicago Whales are the first United Baseball Association club to take home a second Presidents Cup Trophy!

What an incredible way to end the season. Last night, a pitching battle between Jim Kasper of the Whales and Larry Cowell of the Orphans took place. Cowell lost the game, but must be commended. He pitched 10 and 2/3 innings, throwing 187 pitches while giving up just 2 runs.

The game-winning hit came in the bottom of the 11th. Lawrence Bostick started the inning off with a single, but was caught stealing during the next batter appearance. Langlois flied out, and it looked like the clubs were headed to a 12th frame.

But Dustin Dickerson, the club's 22-year-old right-fielder, came through with a single to keep the inning alive. Known for his speed, he used it, swiping a bag while pitcher Tom Diggins was at the plate. Diggins, who came to the plate just 22 times this season, made contact on a 1-2 curveball. It hit off the end of the bat, and floated over the first-baseman's head and in front of the right-fielder. Dickerson, who was off on contact, gritted his teeth as he rounder third base, but there wouldn't even be a throw.

Congratulations to the 1914 Presidents Cup Series Champions, the Chicago Whales!

James Gilmore Awards Presidents Cup to Weeghman

CHICAGO, IL. October 9, 1914 - "I am proud and privileged to be here in this city for the third season in a row," said a cheery Gilmore. First, the Chicago Orphans. Last season, the Whales. And now, the Whales can safely say that they are and forever will be the first United Baseball Association and Federal League club to not only win multiple Presidents Cup Series, but to win in back-to-back seasons."

After a brief ovation, Mr. Charles Weeghman, owner of the Whales club, took the stage.

"Thank you, thank you. Thank you. Please, thank you. We are champions once again!" The 40-year-old restaurant magnate held the trophy over his head, basking in it's glory. "I would like to thank you, the fans, for coming to as many games as you did. We had almost 185,000 more fans in attendance than the next-best team, the Orphans. We will continue to use the gate receipts to go out and find the best players and staff money can buy. Thank you."

The 1914 Chicago Whales
94 W - 60 L, Second PCS Win

The Chicago Whales were the first Federal League team and UBA team to win multiple Presidents Cup Series, and the first to win back-to-back Series.

The Whales had an interesting run to the 1914 Presidents Cup Series.

The Whales were owned by restaurateur Charles Weeghman and managed by Arnie Simpson.

Three Managers Fired

NEW YORK, NY. October 11, 1914 - Just days after the conclusion of the 1914 campaign, three managers have been relieved of their duties due to on-field performance:

*

A "difference of opinion" has cost Jonathan Webster his job as manager of the Baltimore Terrapins. Following a postgame meeting with front office officials and ownership, Webster left the ballpark without addressing reporters. It was then revealed by team owner Harry Goldman that Webster had been dismissed from the club. Few details are available on the firing at this time. "Basically, it just came down to a difference of philosophy between Jonathan and management," Goldman said.

When reached for comment at his Baltimore home, Webster refused to comment on the firing other than to say, "We just mutually parted ways. That's it." The club will begin a search for Webster's successor immediately. Several interviews have already been set up, but team officials declined to say who is on their list of possible replacements.

He was popular with players and fans, but that wasn't enough: Gus Trause has been relieved of his duties as the manager of the Brooklyn Tip-Tops. "He's a good guy, but sometimes that's not enough," said Tip-Tops owner Robert Ward in prepared remarks, adding "We needed to win a ballgame or two more often."

According to sources, the team plans on interviewing candidates over the next couple of days before naming Trause's replacement. Ward is reportedly extremely unhappy with the on-field success of his club in the league's first three seasons, and is considering selling the club.

The future of the Pittsburgh Rebels will not include Carl Jones. Much-criticized for his in-game managing by local writers of late, Jones has been fired as manager of the Rebels. The decision is believed to have been made primarily by team owner William Kerr, who was always quick to publicly criticize Jones's decisions on the field and in the clubhouse. When reached at his home in Pittsburgh, the owner said the decision was made "in the best interest of the team," but he refused to elaborate on the specific reasons which led to the firing. Jones told reporters he plans to explore his options for another job in baseball. "I'll miss Pittsburgh and I'll miss the Rebels, but I won't miss having everything I do second-guessed," he said.

CHICAGO, IL. October 23, 1914 - In the twilight of his career, Jim Kasper has no intention of going anywhere anytime soon. The 35-year-old Whales starter hoisted up the Federal League Pitcher of the Year Award early yesterday, silencing critics who thought it was time for the "old man" to retire.

Kasper crafted an ERA of 1.66 as he won 23 games, dropped 11, fanned 208 and gave up 75 walks in 342.1 innings of work.

March Arrives, Spring Camps Open

TAMPA, FL. March 1, 1915 - Previously held in Phoenix, the United and Federal League clubs are now holding their spring camps in the sunny Tampa Bay region in Florida. Gone are the mesas and sand in the distance, and in are palm trees, sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, and cool ocean breezes.

But baseball fans don't care about any of that. UBA fans are flocking to the region to get a glimpse of their favorite veterans and young players who they are seeing for the first time. The first exhibition games will begin in a few days.
